Smart Gilas: The fundamental truths

3/09/2010 | , | 17 comments »

source: Rick Olivares | businessmirror.com.ph

When Smart Gilas Pilipinas arrived in the Nikola Tesla International Airport in Belgrade, Serbia, in March of 2009, they went there to learn firsthand the kind of motion offense that Rajko Toroman was preaching to them.

It was one thing to be taught the system but it was altogether a different experience to see it executed by the masters of Euroball.

By the end of the trip, two incidents would impact the team in its formation and in the future.

The first came almost immediately—at immigration.

The duty officer inquired about their business in Serbia. For the players, it was obvious they were in the business of basketball. With the coaching staff, after Toroman, he seemed incredulous about the veracity of assistants Allan Gregorio, Jude Roque and Djalma Arnedo. “You’re basketball coaches?” he asked in a disbelieving tone. The officer wasn’t being punked, Toroman assured, and the officer stamped their travel papers with a wry smile and a shake of the head.

It was a funny moment and the incident became a staple of in-house jokes. But it gnawed at Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Noli Eala.

During the formation of Gilas, some of those who first came on board initially offered their services for free. The lure of the national team is universal but what also made the venture particularly very attractive was the fact that business tycoon and SBP president Manuel V. Pangilinan was backing it.

Toroman wasn’t keen on having too many assistants, after all, he got along fine by his lonesome when he coached Iran. But the Islamic Republic and the Philippine Republic are both, literally and figuratively, oceans apart.

In Iran, his players were obligated to follow his orders, after all, they were military conscripts as well. Toroman could amazingly recite the statistics of Mark Caguioa and Asi Taulava among others and offer a detailed scouting report on the RP-San Miguel team he faced in Tokushima in 2007. But that was it. He didn’t know anything more. Gregorio and the others were to be the liaison not just to local players but his guides to Philippine culture.

In a team, there can only be one voice. It is no different from others. When Joel Banal was coaching the Ateneo Blue Eagles, he had one rule—it was his voice, only his, that will be heard in the huddle. The same applied to Gilas—you can’t have too many cooks in the kitchen. The assistants, maybe not even the most accomplished in the land, were there to complement Toroman who knew the international game inside and out.

Gilas’s initial foray into international competition in Guangxi was successful although the level of competition wasn’t very good. In Belgrade, they got a close-up look at perhaps the best place for basketball outside continental USA. More than a drubbing, the team was given a clinic on the finer points of the play that Toroman espoused: continuous motion, ball movement, flawless execution and a no-star system.

Assistant coach Jude Roque, after a while, stopped watching his own team to marvel at the Serbs’ skill. “You could see even the stars of the other teams doing the dirty work such as setting screens, inbounding the ball, playing help defense. It was impressive. Iba talaga sa larong local.”

After the initial drubbing by Metalac Valjevo, Gilas began to play better. But the second realization was painfully obvious—they needed someone to rebound for them. Jason Ballesteros, Aldrech Ramos and Greg Slaughter were game but wanting in height, heft and speed. What they needed was someone to turn the shaded lane into a no-fly zone, hence the importance of selecting an import to be naturalized as it was allowed by Fiba.

When the team returned home, SBP and Gilas officials first took a look at Chris Taft. The six-foot-10 Taft, a former Pittsburgh Panther, never suited up for the team. Team officials were concerned with his back that eventually forced him out of the National Basketball Association (NBA) after playing for the Golden State Warriors.

The team then flew to Las Vegas to train at the Joe Abunassar Impact Camp. The trip was threefold in its objectives—to learn once more from a respected training camp, to bond and to get a firsthand look at about a dozen Fil-foreigners who were invited to try out. It was here where they first met up with Marshall University’s Chris Lutz, a six-foot-three guard, McGill University’s Sean Anthony, a six-foot-four shooting guard, and former Los Angeles Lakers draftee Chester Jarrel Giles, a six-foot-10 jumping jack with an incredible wingspan.

Giles, despite having a swirl of controversy surrounding him during his college days, was impressive. Eala conducted a background check and got positive reviews. “He’s a good kid who got a bad rap,” was the general consensus.

The Seattle native quickly bonded with the nationals. Although team officials noted his propensity for the party life, they quickly dismissed it as a potential problem. “We were in Las Vegas. That’s a party place,” added Roque. “So what’s a guy to do?”

Giles also seemed eager to cast his lot in the Philippines even if he was still hoping to make an NBA roster. “I won’t lie,” he related during the Fiba Champions Challenge Cup in Jakarta where Gilas competed in May of 2009. “The dream is the NBA. But that’s the dream of so many others. Who knows, if I do good in the Philippines, I just might get my shot at the NBA.”

The team pronounced themselves happy with Giles.

Nine months later, the team’s main problems that threatened to tear them asunder were all import related.

Big man’s return

3/08/2010 | , , | 30 comments »

source: Rommel C. Manlosa | sunstar.com.ph

Seven-foot giant Gregg Slaughter is mulling his options and eyes a return to the University of the Visayas Green Lancers for a final performance for the next Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) season.

Slaughter has now devoted his full time for the Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team and didn’t join the UV Lancers in the Partners Cup. He only got to return to Cebu during a two-game friendly series against the the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños last Wednesday and Thursday.

I am thinking about it. But I don’t know. It’s all up to me,” said Slaughter, who added that he wants to help UV win an unprecedented 10th straight Cesafi crown.

The Gilas management and the Samahang Baskitbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) will leave the decision to return to UV to Slaughter alone.

“Gilas doesn’t want to get involved in that decision. They told me it’s all up to me to decide on that matter. I’d love to return, honestly. I just can’t decide yet,” said Slaughter.

Slaughter and Gilas will have a busy schedule as they prepare for the Asian Games this November.

On March 12, Gilas will leave for Australia to play a series of games against teams from the National Basketball League in Sydney, Canberra and Perth. They will then leave for Serbia on March 26, and will be in Las Vegas on April 22 to April 30.

Aside from that, the team is also set to play in the Fiba-Asia tournament in May, the Jones Cup in July and other various pocket tournaments to help prepare for the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China in November.

Slaughter got Gilas’ nod when he helped the Lancers win the past three titles of the Cesafi and his return could make a 10th title an easy quest for UV.

“There is no pressure from either side for me to decide. I love to return (to UV) but I also want to play for the country. If I can find the best way to manage my schedules, then I can decide on that matter,” said Slaughter.

Smart Gilas Pilipinas Year One: The Thousand Mile Journey

3/08/2010 | , | 16 comments »

by Rick Olivares | bleachersbrew.blogspot.com

Inside the dugout of the Smart Gilas Men’s National Basketball Team at the Al Ahli Club in Dubai, the atmosphere was festive as the team celebrated their third place finish in the 21st Dubai International Tournament.

The Nationals beat the import-laden Al Jalaa Syria 107-98 to repay them for their opening day loss that touched off an incredible comeback that saw them come within four points of making the finals.

Head Coach Rajko Toroman was being interviewed outside the dugout when Demetric Shaw, one of Al Jalaa’s American imports, came over. Seconds later, Toroman ushered Shaw inside and the room quickly fell silent.

We were stunned. We didn’t know why Shaw was inside. I thought maybe he was looking for a fight.” wondered team captain Chris Tiu. In the battle for third place, the Filipinos frustrated Shaw with their tough play.

“Tell them what you told me,” said a beaming Toroman.

Shaw, the muscular 6’3” guard out of Kent State University who once scored a FIBA record of 74 points for Halcones in the Mexican League said, “From the beginning of the tournament, you are the only team that played with great pride for your country, incredible passion as a team, and the determination to be better. It was an honor to play against you.”

The room exploded with thunderous applause.

It was the easiest comment to make.” explained Shaw a few weeks after the tournament. “When I played against them, I felt proud of how they honored themselves and their country with a never-say-die attitude. Mahram was a team of superstars but it was great to see an undersized Philippine team fight with everything they had. And I thank them for reminding me why I started playing in the first place.”

Toroman’s face lit up with elation. After months of hardship, struggle, controversy, and infighting, the third place finish was a clear vindication of the path he and his boys had taken.

It had been 13 months since Gilas’ initial foray into international competition. Year One began with a win and now they closed it out in familiar fashion.

It was the only time in their two weeks abroad that Toroman managed a smile. He exhaled and rejoined the party inside the locker room....

Son of ex-PBA star in US hoop spotlight

3/07/2010 | , , , | 18 comments »

source: Jun Medina | manilatimes.net

The teen-aged Filipino son of legendary Philippine Basketball Association import Bobby Ray Parks is following into the footsteps of his illustrious father in the highly competitive American high school hoop scene.

Bobby Ray Jr., who is nicknamed Ray-Ray, currently plays as starting shooting guard for Melrose Academy Golden Wildcats in Tennessee, is ranked 12th in the United States and second in the state, according Maxpreps.com.

The older Parks is remembered by Filipino basketball fans of all ages for his slashing and high-leaping plays in 12 seasons with the PBA during which he won five league titles. Nicknamed “The Michael Jordan of the Philippines,” Parks made his PBA debut for San Miguel Beer in 1987 then saw action for Formula Shell up to 1998, finishing his 12-year career with nearly 9,000 points, over 3,000 rebounds and more than 1,000 assists in 220 games.

In 1989, Bobby Ray Sr. averaged a whopping 52.6 points in 23 games with a high of 72 points. Parks won a PBA record of seven “Best Import” awards and was inducted into the Philippine Basketball Hall of Fame last year.

A chip off the old hoop block, the younger Parks moved to the United States in 2006 in order to live with his father and stepmother Jasmine, also a Filipina. His mother, Marifer Celine Barbosa, is divorced from Bobby and now resides in Los Angeles.

Ray-Ray Parks, 17, is already a 6’4 left-handed finesse player at 195 pounds. He is averaging 10.4 points, 2.2 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.7 steals for a team looking to capture a state title.

He speaks fluent Tagalog and is carefully weighing the pros and cons of returning to Manila after he finishes high school, or to continue honing his skills in the highly competitive US college circuit.

Ray-Ray continues to keep in touch with his friends in the Philippines and dreams of one day suiting up for the Philippine national team.

For now, Ray-Ray is beginning to shine in local teams at his father’s home state.

Melrose recently captured the Tennessee State AAA District 16 title, and then went on to win their Region 8 AAA playoff game, which set up this weekend’s Region 8 semi-final game against Memphis Southwind.

Last season, Parks Jr. played at Saint George’s Independent School in Collierville, Tennessee, but transferred Melrose in search for better competition than what he faced while starring at the small private school.

When 6’5 Bobby Ray Sr. was enshrined into the Hall of Fame almost six months ago, his son joined him and was able to train with the Philippine national junior team, much to the chagrin of national team Executive Director Noli Eala.

Ray-Ray has the perfect basketball body—long-limbed, slim, just like his father . . . The kid is special,” said Eala in an article written by Luke Winn for the Sports Illustrated Magazine website. “Bobby is open for Ray-Ray to play college in Manila and his godfather Norman [Black, now a head coach there], I’m sure, is talking to Ray-Ray about the possibility.”

Wearing the same No. 22 jersey that his father wore at Memphis State University (now Memphis University) from 1980 to 1984, Ray has benefited from his experiences in the US, improving his game to the point where he now receives player evaluations from men’s basketball recruiting sites.

He [Parks] has size, strength, and a terrific stroke from deep to go along with very good basketball blood lines,” one scout said on espn.com. “This lefty has range out to 24’ with a good release.”

Ray-Ray, 17 and still growing, is already churning good numbers—a field goal percentage of 54 percent from inside the 3-point line and 39 percent past the line. If his development as a hoop star continues, he may one day make a big difference for the RP national team in its quest to regain its glory days of yesteryears.

TNT’s Vargas blasts recycled referees, ‘judgment calls’

3/07/2010 | , | 14 comments »

source: Musong R. Castillo | sports.inquirer.net

Saying that the Philippine Basketball Association has a “responsibility to the fans more than entertaining (them),” the Talk ‘N Text squad Saturday justified its recent walkout while blasting the league for its stagnant state in officiating.

There is always a price to pay for what is right. I am sure Alaska and the PBA have benefited from it, too,” said TNT board representative Ricky Vargas in a statement sent to the Inquirer through text.

“We hope that this sacrifice does not go in vain,” he said, referring to the Tropang Texters’ walkout in Game 4 of its quarterfinal series with Barangay Ginebra in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.
The walkout with still a minute left in the first quarter drew a fine of more than P1.2 million.

Even a death penalty is not a deterrent for those who stand on strong principle and values of integrity and fair play.”

Vargas’ statement was in reaction to an Inquirer report that quoted Alaska owner Wilfred Steven Uytengsu as saying that an upgraded P10 million fine on teams that walk out in future games “is a bargain if you can endure the embarrassment.”

In a separate phone interview Friday night, Vargas had asked what the league has done to improve officiating, which he described “as the symptom of a problem that has been there for the longest time.”

Usually soft-spoken, Vargas said that the league has spent so much money on a lot of things but has held back in spending for a solid referees’ training program that could finally make the league global.

What we have (as technical officials) are recycled experts who hide behind the so-called judgment call,” he said. “Every time there is a blunder, they say it’s a judgment call.

“But what has the league done to improve the judgment of our referees?” Vargas asked.

Vargas even went as far as suggesting that the league drop its pool of referees and put the job up for bidding at the start of each season or conference, like what the UAAP and the NCAA have been doing.

“The public and the teams deserve to watch a game that is not only well-played, but more importantly, officiated well,” Vargas said.

Smart Gilas: No import for Aussie tour

3/07/2010 | , | 12 comments »

source: Joaquin Henson | philstar.com

It’s not likely that the Smart-Gilas national basketball squad will play in Australia with a naturalization candidate. That’s the word from team manager Frankie Lim who said the other day he’s still negotiating to sign up either Dwayne Jones or Brian Butch as Gilas’ “import.”

“I’m still trying to get hold of Jones’ agent,” said Lim. “Butch is our second option. He’s a four-guy who has a good touch from medium range.”

Gilas is set to leave March 12 to play at least five games against Australian selections in Sydney and Canberra. Then, the team will depart for Serbia on March 28 to play seven games.

Jones has played for Boston, Cleveland and Charlotte in the NBA. He teamed with current NBA guards Jameer Nelson and Delonte West to power St. Joseph’s University to a 30-2 record in 2004 and was the first player from Norman Black’s alma mater to register a triple double in nearly 20 years.

Butch, nicknamed the “Polar Bear,” is averaging 17.5 points, 10.6 rebounds and 33 minutes for the Bakersfield Jam in the NBA Developmental League this season. He was the MVP of the recent D-League All-Star Game, compiling 18 points and 13 rebounds in 21 minutes.

SBP executive director Noli Eala said Jones and Butch are coach Rajko Toroman’s personal picks.

As for Fil-Am guard Chris Lutz, Eala mentioned that the Marshall University deadshot will skip the Australia and Serbia tours to play out his varsity eligibility in the NCAA. “He is committed to join Gilas right after the playoffs,” continued Eala. “He will definitely play for Gilas during the coming US and Canada tours.”

Eala also said Bernie Atienza, Butch Antonio, Rico Meneses and Joey Bautista continue to be involved in Gilas’ affairs.

“They weren’t actually completely relieved of their duties with the national team,” explained Eala. “Bernie, as SBP deputy executive director, is chairman of the national team management group. Butch is coach Rajko’s choice as special assistant and handles all national teams so he clearly remains an integral part of Gilas.

Rico is chairman of the SBP marketing committee and still secures sponsorships for Gilas including, recently, deals with Unilab as official team sponsor, Omega Pain Killer as official liniment and GMA Pinoy TV as broadcast partner of the Mideast tour.

Joey is head of the SBP media group and handles digital information dissemination and documentation for Gilas. They’re all still very much involved with Gilas’ marketing, media and coordination with international federations. The only real change is for these guys to help Gilas outside of Smart’s payroll.

It’s part of what I agreed with SBP vice chairman Ricky Vargas as budget management. These Gilas volunteers are responsible for the chemistry, camaraderie and animo of the team. The players will attest to their contributions.”

M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños beat Smart Gilas Pilipinas in second exhibition game

3/05/2010 | , | 41 comments »

source: Rommel C. Manlosa | sunstar.com.ph

The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños displayed the poise of a veteran to avenge a frustrating defeat last Thursday with pulsating 79-76 victory over the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas National Men’s Team at the Cebu Coliseum friday night.

The win wrapped up a two-game exhibition series and the Niños will again host two matches against the Talk ‘N Tex Phone Pals on March 8 and 9 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Yesterday, the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala squad stamped its dominance over the youthful Gilas, 2-1 in their head-to-head match-up, though Smart Sports director Patrick Gregorio said Gilas could be back for more matches.

“Definitely we will be back. Gilas will travel to Australia, Serbia and Las Vegas in the coming days. But we will be back,” Gregorio told Sun.Star Cebu.

Despite the defeat, Gilas achieved what they came for--generate support and bring the national team closer to the fans outside of Manila.

The reason we came here is to bring the team closer to the people in the provinces and you can see how they turned up in this game in terms of support. Tinalikuran nila
yung M. Lhuillier and they rooted for Gilas,” added Gregorio.

The crowd booed the Niños and cheered every Gilas basket and defensive stop.

The Niños were shooting like crazy early as they sank four triples en route to a 22-10 lead after the first quarter.

Gilas was struggling all throughout the first half and allowed the Niños to erect their biggest lead, 46-26, early in the third period.

It was at this situation when the nationals changed gears, holding Cebu to just two points in the next 5:10 to make it within 48-45 with 4:17 to play in the third.

The Niños answered with a short 5-0 blitz but Gilas countered with a 9-0 rally to take the lead for the first time back since 8-7 in the first quarter.

The Niños held their slim lead all throughout the final period, thanks to the all out games of Stephen Padilla, Bruce Dacia and reinforcement Jason Dixon.

Dacia, who scored only four, last Thursday, finished with 19 points, while Padilla had 21 points including five triples.

M. Lhuillier hits back at Gilas
by Emmanuel B. Villaruel (The Freeman) | philstar.com

CEBU, Philippines - The M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños wasted away a 20-point lead in the third quarter, but toiled hard when it mattered most to scrape through a 79-76 victory and get even with the Smart Gilas Team Pilipinas in their two-day exhibition match before a sizeable crowd last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

After closing the first half with a buzzer-beating triple, streak-shooter Stephen Padilla opened the third period with another 3-point bomb to give the Niños of team owner Michel J. Lhuillier and coach Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba their largest lead at 46-26.

That huge advantage, however, suddenly disappeared as the Nationals of Serbian coach Rajko Toroman suddenly turned red-hot and whipped up a furious 28-7 rally to briefly snatch the driver’s seat, 54-53, their first since getting off to a 6-3 start.

After a 54-all standoff going into the final canto, the two protagonists figured in an intense hardcourt battle that left the large throng of spectators holding their breath until the final buzzer.

Smart Gilas could only tie the score at 65-all at the spirited M. Lhuillier stalwarts bravely guarded at lead five points edge, the last was at 76-71 with 36 seconds left to play.

At that point, the Niños nearly flirted with disaster after import Jason Dixon was whistled for a technical foul for throwing the ball at Barroca.

In that swing though, Gilas could only make two points on Barroca’s free throw as they commited a costly miscue in their possession.

Smart Gilas, showing the courage and fortitude that made them worthy to fight for the flag and country in major international competitions and hopefully in the 2012 London Olympics, threatened for the last time at 76-77 on Casio’s trey with only four second to go.

In the ensuing sequence, Dixon was quickly fouled by Greg Slaughter and the former NCAA star and one-time PBA import calmly deliver the goods to give M. Lhuillier a 79-76 cushion.

Still, Smart Gilas has a chance to square the count, but Casio, who found an open spot from the right wing, misfired his 3-point attempt, with Ariel Mepaña securing the ball as the final buzzer honked, leaving the entire M. Lhuillier bench and their legion of fans to burst into frenzied celebration.

Padilla exploded with 21 points, Bruce Dacia added 19 and Dixon finished with 15 points for the Niños, who will face next PBA’s Talk N’ Txt Phone Pals on March 8 to 9 at the Cebu Coliseum.

Afterwhich, the Niños will take on the Brgy. Ginebra Kings on March 12 at the USC-Main Gym.

The Scores:

M.Lhuillier-Cebu (79) - Padilla 21, Dacia 19, Dixon 15, Mepana 8, Santos 4, Saladaga 4, Basco 3, Ababon 2, Enriquez 2

RP Gilas (76) –Baracael 15, Barroca 13, Lassiter 10, Casio 9, Ababou 9, Ballesteros 7, Aguilar 7, Tiu 4

Quarters: 22-10, 43-26, 54-54, 79-76

2nd Smart Gilas prospect eyed

3/05/2010 | , | 20 comments »

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is eyeing another prospect in NBA’s developmental league veteran Brian Butch for naturalization in case talks with NBA journeyman Dwane Jones bogs down.

Smart Gilas manager Frankie Lim yesterday said they’re now in the process of pursuing the 6-11 Jones, who suited up for several teams in both the NBA and the NBDL before ending up with the Austin Toros this year.

Lim disclosed that they had been having a difficult time getting in touch with Jones’ agent since the former St. John standout is still playing with the Toros in the NDL, which is expected to conclude at the end of the month.

We’re having a hard time getting in touch with him (Jones) and we’re using all avenues to get him because he’s what coach Rajko (Toroman) wants,” said Lim. “Although we will not give up on him (Jones), we know Brian Butch could be a great fit to the team if in case we couldn’t get Jones,” he added.

Lim said Jones, an un-drafted rookie in 2005 who signed up with the Minnesota Timberwolves the same year before he was shipped to the Boston Celtics then moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers and finally to the Charlotte Bobcats two years ago, is expected to fill the Nationals’ need for inside presence.

Butch, a white 6-11 player who plays the No. 3 spot, doesn’t have the same power and athleticism of Jones but is more versatile since he does not only defend and rebound but also a reliable scorer who can hit it from behind the arc.

Smart Gilas Pilipinas defeats M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños in first exhibition game

GAME 2 Update:
Cebu Ninos beat Smart Gilas Pilipinas, 79-76

CEBU, Philippines - RP Smart Gilas bounced back with and 83-71 victory last night to beat M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños in the first game of their two-part exhibition at the Cebu Coliseum.

The win actually evens things up for both teams as the Cebuanos stopped the national squad in their first meeting last year.

Today’s game set at 5 p.m. will be some sort of a decider.

The RP Smart Gilas came in full force with stars Chris Tiu, Japeth Aguilar and Marcio Lassiter joining the squad for this Cebu stint.

The Niños, however, took command in the early going and were up by as much as 12 points before Gilas broke the ice.

The presence of import Jason Dixon added some muscle to coach Yayoy Alcoseba’s team at the start, but later in the game, this also appeared to have been to their disadvantage.

After a strong start, Dixon failed to deliver the points later in the game and veteran point guard Woodrow Enriquez also lost his cool when he was slapped a foul.

Game officials awarded Gilas two technical freethrows plus ball possession after Enriquez flared up, which helped turn the game around.

Dylan Ababou, Tiu, Mac Baracael and JV Casio stepped up and powered Gilas’ 13-0 run to help their team go up by 12, 61-49.

The Niños tried to get back the lead, but seemed to lack the firepower.

Gilas’ Japhet Aguilar made a back-to-back slam dunks and Cebuano Greg Slaughter also chipped in for the nationals to the delight of the spectators.

There were some calls that went in favor of the Niños, that RP coach Rajko Taroman threatened not to finish the game with six minutes and 28 seconds left.

The proverbial cooler heads prevailed and the game continued.

The scores:

RP GILAS (83 ) – Tiu16, Casio 14, Lassiter 14, Baracael 11, Ababou 10, Aguilar 10, Slaughter 6 Barroca 2

MLKP NIÑOS (71 ) – Dixon 19, Padilla 13, Santos 10, Poligrates 8, Mepaña 7, Dacia 4, Magsumbol 3, Basco 2, Enriquez 2. - (THE FREEMAN)

Smart Gilas just too good

Rommel C. Manlosa | sunstar.com.ph

THE Smart-Gilas Pilipinas team displayed a variety of offensive weapons and showed no mercy to the M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños, 83-71, in the first of their two-game exhibition matches at the Cebu Coliseum last night.

The victory evened the head-to-head match-up between the Nationals and the Niños, who hired American Jason Dixon for the exhibition matches, at one game each.

The Niños won their first encounter, 82-76, in February last year and the two will get to settle the score at 5 p.m. still at the Cebu Coliseum.

Gilas’ win also ended the Niños’ string of 26 victories dating back to the Liga Pilipinas regular season.

Coming in full force, Gilas showed the Cebuanos the brand of basketball they will display in the various international competitions, including the Asian Games this November, and they didn’t disappoint.

From the basic half-court execution and outside shooting, to the razzle-dazzle fast break plays, the Gilas brought put the Cebuano fans to the edge of their seats from the start to finish.

Japeth Aguilar provided the highlights of the games with two alley-oop dunks to make sure of another full house game today.

However, the game also had its drama.

With 6:28 left, Gilas coach Rajko Toroman motioned his players to proceed to the dugout after team captain Chris Tiu was called for an offensive foul.

However, he did not carry out the plan and instead pleaded his case to the referees for almost five minutes before deciding to continue with the game.

Following that incident, Aguilar brought the house down with back-to-back alley-hoop dunks that secured the game for the Gilas.

The Niños, however, did not give away the game in a silver platter and even managed to hold on to the lead until the 7:30 mark of the third.

CEBU, Philippines - Basketball loving Cebuanos will witness a highly entertaining hardcourt battle as the reigning Liga Pilipinas national champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños go up against the star-studded Smart Gilas Team Pilipinas in two-day exhibition match that will start today at the Cebu Coliseum.

Showtime is set at 5 pm.

The Smart Gilas of Serbian coach Rajko Toroman are tipped as the pre-game favorite as the Niños of team owner Michel J. Lhuillier and decorated coach Raul “Yayoy” D. Alcoseba have beffed up their roster with a 6-foot-9, 275-pound monster in Jason Dixon.

The 36-year-old Dixon, a former NCAA star who reinforced the Coca-Cola Tigers in the PBA two years ago, teamed up with Gabe Freeman in powering the Philippine Patriots to the first ever title of the ASEAN Basketball League.

Also, they have a reputation of giving PBA teams a run for their money and even beat them sometimes.

On hand to provide Dixon the needed support are the likes of Bruce Dacia, Stephen Padilla, Woodrow Enriquez and Marlon Basco.

The rest of the M. Lhuillier reliables are Mark Ababon, Ariel Mepaña, Ian Saladaga, Franklin Nailon, Mark Magsumbol, Abby Santos and Hafer Mondragon.

On the side of Smart Gilas, they will parade a young and talented crew composed of 6-foot-11 tower Greg Slaughter, Dylan Ababou, Japeth Aguilar, Jason Ballesteros, Mark Barocca, Joseph Evans Casio, Ricardo Cawaling, Rafael Joey Jazul, Magi King Sison, Marcio Lassiter and Chris Tiu.

Coca-Cola, Air21 see action in Dubai tourney

source: Angel Tesorero | gmanews.tv

The Coca Cola Tigers and the Air21 Express will battle it out with two of the top basketball teams in the UAE at the 2nd Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Basketball Tournament from March 4-6 at the Al Nasr Sports Club in Oud Metha, Dubai.

The tournament is an offshoot of the impressive performance of Smart Gilas Pilipinas team in the recent 21st Dubai International Basketball Championship, where the Philippine developmental team placed third against the behemoths of pan-Arabic basketball.

Speaking highly of Philippine basketball, Naji Aljabri, CEO of New Generation Sport Marketing Event and organizer of the tournament, said he wants to test the mettle of the UAE National Team and Al Nasr Club against the PBA teams.

Aljabri considers the PBA as one of the most organized and prestigious basketball leagues in the world next to the National Basketball Association and the Euro League.

“I want to bring the same professional experience and game intensity of the PBA to the UAE and also to provide entertainment to the Filipino expats who are known basketball fanatics," Aljabri said.

He said the two UAE teams are young but with huge potentials, strong and determined to become among the best teams in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa ) region and even worldwide.

The UAE National team is composed of all local players while Al Nasr Club is led by American import Vincent Jones, who at 6’11" is a dominant inside player, supported by Talal Salem, Talal, Musabah, Khalid Obaid, Ibrahim Obaid, Saleh Sultan and Salem Obaid.

Scheduled games are UAE National Team vs. Air21 (7 pm Dubai time; 11pm Manila time) followed by Al Nasr vs. Coca-Cola (9 pm Dubai time) on March 4 (Thursday); Al Nasr vs. UAE National Team (7 pm) and Air21 vs. Coca-Cola on March 5 (Friday); and UAE National Team vs. Coca Cola (7pm) and Al Nasr vs. Air21 (9 pm) on March 6 (Saturday).

The three-day tournament named after the deputy ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance of the UAE, will follow FIBA rules and a one-round elimination series format. Three foreign players can be included in the line-up but only two will be allowed to play at the same time. - GMANews.TV

PBA sets hefty P10M fine for future walkouts

3/03/2010 | , | 5 comments »

source: gmanews.tv

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has toughened its rules on erring teams, coaches and players, setting stiffer penalties for teams that would walk out of a game and rookie draftees who would turn their back on the league.

From P500,000, the PBA board decided to raise the fine for walkouts to a whopping P10 million in a bid to deter future incidents.

“Our main priority is the public, who came to watch and enjoy a good game," said PBA chairman Lito Alvarez. “They’re the life blood of the league."

Commissioner Sonny Barrios, who has witnessed three walkouts in the league, including the latest staged by Talk ‘N Text in its quarterfinal series with Ginebra in the ongoing Philippine Cup, believes a walkout is “unacceptable."

It’s a no-no and definitely, that’s not the kind of thing the fans want to see," said Barrios. “We won’t tolerate such action which is why we believe an action such as this one merits a hefty fine."

Under the amended rules, a team that would walk out of the game would be given 15 minutes to return to the court. The old rules only provided the concerned team with a seven-minute window to report back to action before forfeiting the game.

A team that would leave the court and never return would not only forfeit its match but would also be suspended in its next game.

A squad that would walk out but eventually get back to the court before the allotted time limit would be fined P2 million.

But it wouldn’t be the team alone that would feel the brunt of the new rule as the PBA would now hold concerned coaches responsible for his squad’s walkout.

A coach would face suspension in the team’s the next game once his wards walk out of a match. In the event that the coach walked out of a game but his team decides to continue playing, the mentor will be slapped a P300,000 fine and a one-game suspension.

Whipping erring players

The PBA has witnessed players getting involved in off court melee with fans and to prevent such incident, the pro league would impose a stiff penalty such as the one meted on Wynne Arboleda, who is still serving his suspension until the rest of the season.

Arboleda, the stocky point guard of Air21, punched and kicked Alain Katigbak during his team’s opening game against guest squad Smart-Gilas last October.

The player was suspended without pay, aside from facing possible civil charges from the fan.

Likewise, in the aftermath of an incident at the start of the season that saw controversial top overall pick Japeth Aguilar turning his back on Air21 (then known as Burger King), the PBA has passed a resolution banning future first-round draftees who would do the same.

The 6’9 Aguilar was offered a maximum salary by the Express at the start of the season and was even given a clause in his contract allowing him to play for the national developmental team Smart-Gilas.

After initially declining, the son of former Northern Consolidated and Ginebra player Peter Aguilar eventually agreed to sign up with Burger King. After one game, though, he was shipped to Barako Bull, then to Talk ‘N Text and finally to Gilas, the team he originally intended to play for. - GMANews.TV

Dwayne Jones has huge game as Toros topple Tulsa

3/03/2010 | , | 10 comments »

source: David Robb | statesman.com

Dwayne Jones could be forgiven for wondering what a guy's got to do to get scooped up by an NBA team. The Toros center leads the D-League in rebounds (15.7 per game) and double-doubles while averaging 17.2 points.

With a 26-point, 14-rebound effort in a 95-87 victory over Tulsa on Tuesday at the Austin Convention Center, Jones took another step toward shattering the league's single-season rebounding record.

Of course, Jones wouldn't mind being denied that feat by an NBA call-up. He thought his big break had come last Wednesday when the Dallas Mavericks invited him to a workout. But the Mavs passed on Jones.

After obliging Michael Finley's request to be released Monday, the San Antonio Spurs could look to their affiliate to fill the roster spot. If they do, Jones and teammates Curtis Jerrells and Alonzo Gee are likely call-up candidates.

Matched up with Tulsa center Byron Mullens, assigned by the Oklahoma City Thunder earlier Tuesday, Jones rattled off nine consecutive second-quarter points to help the Toros (23-12) take a 51-45 lead into the break. Jones had five steals and two blocks, and his 10 free throws were more than the nine the 66ers (19-16) had as a team.

Gee scored a game-high 28 points , and the Toros led from start to finish. (AMERICAN-STATESMAN CORRESPONDENT)
