Pacquiao, Kobe meet during Nike pictorial

An estimated 500 billboards featuring Manny Pacquiao will be placed in Nike stores across America soon.

Pacquiao was among a bevy of sports stars who underwent a pictorial at the Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles as part of their contractual obligations with the leading sports apparel manufacturer (NIKE).

Others who struck a pose were basketball icon Kobe Bryant and tennis diva Maria Sharapova.

A Team Pacquiao member said all the Nike talents had their pictorials separately but at around 5:30 p.m., as Pacquiao was wrapping up his session, Bryant arrived and the two exchanged pleasantries.

Pacquiao arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday night and after his Wednesday afternoon shoot, the pound-for-pound king went to the airport to take the Philippine-bound Philippine Airlines jet that touches down in Manila at 6 a.m. today.

Pacquiao, who fights next on Nov. 14 possibly against Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico, had to return to the Philippines so he could fulfil all his showbiz commitments.

Philippine sports finally enter the digital era as ABS-CBN begins its high-definition (HD) test broadcast of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines’ (UAAP) basketball games this Saturday and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on Monday on Balls HD (SkyCable Channel 166).

According to ABS-CBN Sports Head Peter Musngi, it will only be a matter of time before ABS-CBN starts airing boxing, billiards, and even non-basketball games of UAAP and the NCAA on HD.

RP Team Final 12: A tough call for Guiao

7/10/2009 | , , | 3 comments »

source: abs-cbnnews.com

RP Team coach Yeng Guiao is having a hard time deciding who will make up the final list of the Powerade-Team Pilipinas, who will be competing FIBA-Asia World Championship qualifier in Tianjin, China in August.

Guiao will have to decide before the July 22 deadline of FIBA Asia which of the 14 RP squad members will make the cut.

That will be the most difficult decision probably coming in the next three weeks,” said Guiao in a report by PBA.ph.

“All of these guys have invested so much in the team, and all of them have been performing well without any exception since the SEABA,” he added.

The RP Team coach said injuries and illness will play a big part in determining the members of the Final 12.

We will still rely on our first criteria – the least healthy guys are going to be the prime candidates for the cutoff,” he said.

With Kelly Williams still recuperating from a blood disorder, the arrival of Japeth Aguilar from the US has brought back to 14 the number of candidates.

It is widely believed that the 6’9” son of former Northern Consolidated center Peter Aguilar will make it into the final line up.

Some others are also highly considered.

I would hate to cut somebody like Ryan Reyes,” Guiao said. “I’m very hopeful that he can be healthy at least for Tianjin.

Reyes joined Jayjay Helterbrand and Sonny Thoss on the injury list after pulling a hamstring against Malaysia in the 8th SEABA Men’s Championship in Medan, Indonesia last April.

Helterbrand and Thoss have since recovered from injuries, leaving Reyes’ condition in doubt.

Darchinyan wants to 'break' Donaire

7/10/2009 | | 0 comments »

source: abs-cbnnews.com

Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan vowed to “break” Filipino champ Nonito Donaire should they face again sometime in the future to avenge his loss during their first meeting.

Darchinyan, who currently holds the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC) and International Boxing federation (IBF) super flyweight titles, maintained his hateful stance against Donaire.

If I meet him [again], I'm gonna break him,” he told sports writer Dennis Principe over Sports Chat radio show in dzSR.

The Australian-based Armenian said he has fought better fighters than Donaire, who knocked him out in five rounds in July 2007.

I fought better guys than him. I went to the Philippines and fought Z-Gorres… then I took three world champions, I knocked out all of them,” said Darchinyan.

Darchinyan said his loss to Donaire is nothing but a fluke.

He beat me by my mistake… that happens in boxing,” he said.

Donaire is currently campaigning in the super flyweight division and even eyeing a rematch with Darchinyan after three successful IBF/International Boxing Organization title defenses in flyweight.

He is scheduled to fight Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion on August 15.

“He can come back and face my oppositions,” said Darchinyan. “I mentioned Z-Gorres, [Dimitri] Kirilov, [Jorge] Arce and [Cristian] Mijares. If he can beat one of them, I'm gonna fight [him].

Darchinyan himself is preparing for a clash with Joseph Agbeko on July 11.

The fight, however, will be for Agbeko’s IBF bantamweight title.

Guiao's Troubles Begin (Team Pilipinas)

7/10/2009 | , , | 4 comments »

source: insidesports.ph

Just when everything seemed to be going well and his players were beginning to jell and look good in limited practice sessions because of the on-going PBA Fiesta Conference Championship series, coach Yeng Guiao’s troubles appear to have begun.

When PBA MVP Jayjay Helterbrand was pulled out by Ginebra coach Jong Uichico with the crucial fourth game against San Miguel Beer on the line in the final four minutes because of a recurring hamstring injury, Uichico said he didn’t want to risk aggravating the soreness and stiffness in his back thigh muscle.

Uichico said he is hoping that the break before Monday’s Game 5 would give Helterbrand time to recover while Ryan Reyes, the talented rookie from Sta Lucia Realty who also pulled a hamstring in the Philippines opening game in the SEABA Championships in Medan, Indonesia last April has shown up but not suited up at the team practices at The Arena.

Uichico who is also concerned about the Powerade national team aside from his Barangay Ginebra squad said he would evaluate Helterbrand on a day-to-day basis and will not hesitate to sideline the prolific point guard if playing him would aggravate his injury and hurt both Barangay Ginebra and the national team.

Guiao isn’t too worried about the Jones Cup which begins in Taipei on July 18 and has hinted at not playing Reyes and possibly even Helterbrand and allowing Willie Miller and Gabe Norwood to play the point.

He is far more concerned about the 25th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship in Tianjin , China – the regional qualifier for the 16th World Championship in Istanbul , Turkey next year where he would need Reyes and Helterbrand, the latest casualty.

Guiao said “Mas mahirap kasi pag sa Jones Cup pa siya ma-injure uli. would hate to cut him because of that.

One other problem is Jarred Dillinger of Talk N’ Text who hasn’t shown up for practice since the team’s return from Las Vegas . Talk N’ Text governor Ricky Vargas and coach Chot Reyes told us they have had no contact with Dillinger and don’t know where he is.

Helterbrand joined the SEABA tourney but didn’t suit up, along with Alaska’s Sonny Thoss (strained knee) and eventually Reyes, suffered the injury during Ginebra practice before the RP left for Medan. Now he and Reyes seem to be in the same boat effectively compounding Guiao’s problems.

The Philippines opens its campaign in the 9-team, single round-robin tournament – held in honor of the founding secretary-general of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) – against Jordan on July 18 at the Hsinchuang Gymnasium.

Up next is Chinese-Taipei A on the 19th, Kazakhstan on the 20th, Japan (21st), Lebanon (22nd), South Korea (23rd), Chinese-Taipei B (25th), and Iran (26th).

All games will be aired live on ESPN.

Guiao had hoped to use the first few games in Taipei as a final tryout before he prunes down the 14-man RP roster to a final 12 with July 22 set as the deadline for the submission of lineups to the World qualifier in Tianjin .

Team Pilipinas hobbled by playmakers’ injuries

7/10/2009 | , , | 3 comments »

source: gmanews.tv

The Powerade Team Pilipinas may be hobbling at the backcourt when it gets its campaign going in next week’s William Jones Cup tournament.

JayJay Helterbrand and Ryan Reyes are both nursing hamstring injuries, a development that is giving coach Yeng Guiao some fits with just about a week before they depart for Taipei for the annual cage meet.

The nagging injury haunted back Helterbrand Wednesday night during Game 4 of the Motolite-Fiesta Cup Finals between Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel.

Helterbrand saw limited action in the final quarter against the Beermen and was clearly favoring the back of his left thigh when he was pulled out with four minutes remaining.

Ginebra coach Jong Uichico later confirmed that Helterbrand had felt soreness and stiffness on his back thigh muscle.

Parang naninigas daw," said Uichico of Helterbrand, who nonetheless led Ginebra with 22 points, four rebounds and six assists in 40 minutes.

Prior to the game, Helterbrand was named the season’s Most Valuable Player during the hour-long Leo Awards rite.

Reyes, the Sta. Lucia Realty sophomore, similarly pulled a hamstring in a game against Malaysia at the start of the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) Men’s Championship in Medan, Indonesia last April and has not joined RP team practice since.

In an apparent effort to go around the dilemma, Guiao has hinted Reyes might skip the Taipei tournament to give his injury more time to heal in preparation for the 25th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship in Tianjin, China in August – the regional qualifier for the 16th World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey next year.

Mas mahirap kasi pag sa Jones Cup pa siya (Reyes) ma-injure uli," Guiao said. “I would hate to cut him (from the final lineup) because of that."

Helterbrand, who joined the SEABA tourney but didn’t suit up, along with Alaska’s Sonny Thoss (strained knee) and eventually Reyes, suffered the injury during Ginebra practice before the RP team left for Medan.

With Helterbrand hobbled by what appears to be a recurring hamstring injury, Guiao might again be forced to hand playmaking responsibilities in the Jones Cup to Willie Miller and Gabe Norwood.

Miller and Norwood are more comfortable at the off-guard spot but when called upon to play No. 1 in lieu of their ailing teammates, both did a remarkable job in the SEABA campaign.

Lack of venue forces PBA to set Game 5 on Monday

7/10/2009 | | 0 comments »

source: gmanews.tv

It’s a rarity for the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) to hold a Monday game.

More so, in a championship match.

But the unavailability of the Araneta Coliseum and the poor ventilation at the alternative site, the Astrodome, have forced the league to schedule Game 5 of the Motolite-PBA Fiesta Cup Finals between Barangay Ginebra and San Miguel on a non-regular playing day.

Holding Monday games is not something new for the league, though. Just last April 20, it scheduled a twinbill at the Astrodome to kick off the 2009 All-Star Week.

However, this is the first time that the pro league has scheduled a championship game on a Monday.

“There is always a first time for everything. But there will be no substitute to the welfare of our fans," PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios said.

Barrios revealed that the league considered holding the game at the Astrodome this Sunday, but during a routine check up, the maintenance staff of the arena discovered that four of the venue’s eight air conditioning blowers are down and repair couldn’t be completed in time for Game 5.

“There is a tremendous clamor for tickets for Game 5. And based on our assessment, the air conditioning system won’t hold up to the huge crowd that we are expecting," said Barrios.

“We always want our fans to watch the games as if they are in the comfort of their homes. Obviously, that’s not possible under the present situation at the Astrodome."

A wrestling extravaganza this Friday and the UAAP games on Saturday and Sunday have forced the league out of the Araneta Coliseum.

With no venue to play on, the PBA has to take a four-day break from the best-of-seven finals currently tied at 2-2 after the Beermen’s dramatic 106-104 win in Game 4 Wednesday night.

Barangay Ginebra is aiming to become the Fiesta Cup's first repeat champion since Red Bull in 2001.

Game 2: SMB def. Ginebra 95-78
Game 3: Ginebra def. SMB 116-103
Game 4: SMB def. Ginebra 106-104

Hurting Helterbrand unsure of Game 5 stint

7/10/2009 | | 0 comments »

source: Nelson Beltran | philstar.com

Jayjay Helterbrand left the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday with a sore left thigh, making him a doubtful starter in Game Five of the Barangay Ginebra-San Miguel showdown for the Motolite PBA Fiesta Cup championship Monday.

It appeared his hamstring injury has recurred. His status now is day-to-day, and we can only hope for the best,” Ginebra coach Jong Uichico told The STAR.

Good thing, there’s a long break. We take a rest today (Thursday) and hopefully it helps Jayjay heal his injury. As we resume practice, we have to ask him everyday how he feels,” Uichico added.

Helterbrand sat out the last three minutes of Game Four which San Miguel won, 106-104, on a crucial four-point binge by Gabe Freeman at endgame.

I opted not to use him anymore so as not to aggravate his injury. If he were able to finish the game, it could have gone the other way. Everybody knows how valuable Jayjay to us,” Uichico said.

Helterbrand, named earlier as the season’s Most Valuable Player, was going great guns when he felt soreness and tightness on his left thigh.

I didn’t take him out right away. Then we noticed he’s already tight. Since he could no longer move well, Danny Ildefonso got away with two baskets on pick-and-roll plays,” said Uichico.

Helterbrand has been hobbled by that injury for at least two years now.

It was the same injury causing him to sit out almost half of the 2006-07 season. And it was also for the same reason that he, as member of the Powerade Team Pilipinas, missed the recent SEABA championship in Medan, Indonesia.

A complete rest is all that is needed to heal a hamstring injury. But he can’t get a long rest with the long PBA season, then he still has his commitment with the RP team,” said Uichico.

National coach Yeng Guiao is also hoping for the best for Helterbrand since his other pointguard in Ryan Reyes is also nursing a hamstring injury.

The Nationals leave on July 16 for Taipei for the Jones Cup competition serving as the final basis for the selection of the Final 12 players for the FIBA-Asia championship in Tianjin, China in August.

If the Fiesta Cup championship reaches a deciding Game Seven, Helterbrand and San Miguel’s Mick Pennisi will follow the Nationals in Taipei on July 18.

The series is down to a best-of-three series affair with the two teams splitting the first four games.

Game Five is set Monday at the Araneta Coliseum with league officials opting to take a break Friday and Sunday due to unavailability of a suitable playing venue.

NBI hunts 3 'fake' billiards players

7/10/2009 | | 0 comments »

source: philstar.com

The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) effort to crack down on Filipinos posing as professional athletes to gain approval of their visas has gained ground as the Japanese Embassy denied the visa applications of three Filipino women claiming to be professional billiards players.

GAB chairman Eric Buhain said he had sought assistance from the National Bureau of Investigation to apprehend the suspects identified as Jennifer Alimes, Cheryl Intinado and Sisa Fiel Aparicio and for the immediate arrest of the syndicate responsible for falsifying the documents submitted to the Japanese Embassy.

Buhain also requested the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to blacklist the three suspects, while a request for a hold departure order has been forwarded to the Bureau of Immigration (BI).

This is the result of GAB’s strong link to other government agencies nationwide as well as with the different embassies and consulates in the country,” said Buhain, a former swimming champion and chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission.

The three women were set to participate in the 17th Central Ladies Open slated July 11-12 in Oakland Tsu, Izumo-Hongo-Cho, Tsu-Shi, Mie-ken, Japan.

In applying for a visa, they attached the invitation from the Japanese organizers and a request letter written in an old GAB letterhead dated June 1 and bearing the signature of Buhain.

The Japanese Embassy checked the authenticity of the GAB letter with Buhain who immediately asked embassy officials to hold the granting of visas after he found out that the three suspects are not listed in the data bank of professional billiards players duly licensed by GAB.

Something’s irregular with the date because I was in the US at the time, meaning they falsified my signature. Second their GAB license Nos. (904, 1003, 903) are fake because our license number is only up to 400,” said Buhain.

A check with the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMAP) for similar authentications also bore negative results.

BMAP director Perry Mariano told Buhain that the three suspects have no record or pending application with the association, saying the alleged “pro players” are total strangers to the billiards community.

source: gmanews.tv

Jordan takes the first crack against Powerade-Team Pilipinas right on opening day of the R. William Jones Cup tournament next week.

The Nationals are set to play the Jordanians on July 18 at the Hsinchuang gymanasium in the first of their seven game assignments in the nine-team, single round-robin meet.

Coached by the ever vocal Mario Palma, Jordan is bannered by US-based NCAA Division I player Jamal Abu-Shamala from the University of Minnesota, Enver Soubzookov, Sam Daghlas and naturalized American Rasheim Wright.

The Jordanians finished fifth in the last FIBA-Asia men’s basketball tournament in Tokushima, Japan and were the ones responsible for eliminating the Filipinos in the fight for a quarterfinals berth.

The PBA-backed nationals then tackle host Chinese-Taipei A the following day (July 19), then Kazakhstan (20th), Japan (21st), Lebanon (22nd), South Korea (23rd), Chinese-Taipei B (25th) and Iran (26th).

Coach Yeng Guiao is hoping to use the first few games in Taipei as a final tryout before he trims down the 14-man RP roster to the final 12-member lin-up for the 25th FIBA-Asia men’s basketball championship.

July 22 has been set as the deadline for the submission of lineups to the World qualifier in Tianjin, China.

All games will be aired live on ESPN.

The Philippines has won the Jones Cup thrice in the past. First in 1981 behind the Northern Cement Consolidated team, in 1985 courtesy of the San Miguel Beer-supported squad under legendary mentor Ron Jacobs and finally in 1998 with the Centennial RP team of coach Tim Cone.

Nike officials claim media rules prompted confiscation of video of college player's pickup-game slam over LeBron James

7/09/2009 | | 6 comments »

source: Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer Reporter cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- To read the Internet, it would seem winning the NBA Most Valuable Player Award has dramatically thinned LeBron James' skin. That and one of the world's largest corporations apparently has to flex its muscle to protect a 6-8, 260-pound man.

In the latest James' Web controversy on Wednesday, CBSSports.com reported that Monday night at Nike's LeBron James Skills Academy at the University of Akron, officials confiscated tapes from two videographers after James had been dunked on by a college player during a pickup game.

To make it worse, the report said, James instructed Nike bosses to take the tapes as if he were Don Barzini in the famous wedding scene from "The Godfather."

It's a funny story indeed and instantly spread virally across the web and soon went into the talk-show machine. The problem is, just like earlier this week when James made headlines for something he never said to Trevor Ariza in a phone conversation, it isn't the whole story.

According to Nike and James himself, nothing of the sort happened.

Oh, he certainly got dunked on. Xavier University's Jordan Crawford slammed it right over him and probably experienced quite a surge in Google hits because of it. James has been dunked on many times in his career and it has become the career highlight of several players.

Nike said taking the tapes had nothing to do with the dunk and more to do with a violation of the media procedures of the event. The James Skills Academy brings together the top high school and college players in the country and is open to the media. After those sessions, however, there are often pickup games that James and several of his Cavs teammates take part in. The media is permitted to watch but not permitted to do interviews or film.

"Nike has been operating basketball camps for the benefit of young athletes for decades and has longstanding policies in place regarding what events are open and closed to media coverage," Nike spokesman KeJuan Wilkins said.

"Unfortunately, for the first time in four years, two journalists did not respect our 'no videotaping' policy at an after-hours pick-up game Monday evening following the LeBron James Skills Academy."

According to Nike officials, both journalists understood the mistake and handed over their tapes without making a fuss. Neither cameraman was available for comment Wednesday night.

As for James, there was no shame. He takes pride in getting to know young up-and-coming players and taking them on the floor. James is not in top form. He took a month off following a five-hour surgery to remove a growth from his jaw last month and then spent three weeks taking care of business and getting some vacation time in Washington, New York, the South of France, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

It was the first significant break James has had from basketball since 2005, after playing for Team USA for each of the last three summers.

He only got back into the gym to do serious workouts on Monday, when the event took place. Often in the pickup game he didn't even run the full length of the floor because he didn't have his wind after taking the time off.

Not that he's taking anything away from Crawford, who apparently threw down an impressive jam.

"Jordan Crawford is a great player, LeBron has been dunked on before, it's no big deal," said a source close to James. "It was a pickup game and it happened in competition."

James doesn't mind getting shown up every now and then either, after all last year he lost two games of HORSE to a warehouse worker in California as part of a promotion for Cub Cadet.

Hour of Reckoning Nears For Guiao

7/09/2009 | , , | 11 comments »

source: PBA.ph

The dreaded sideline presence that is Yeng Guiao is counting the days with trepidation as the hour of reckoning approaches.

That will be the most difficult decision probably coming in the next three weeks,” said Guiao, head coach of Powerade Team Pilipinas, during practice Tuesday night at The Arena in San Juan.

With seven days to go before the national team leaves for the William Jones Cup tournament in Taipei, Guiao is not losing sleep over how to deal with South Korea and Japan, the Philippines’ companions, along with Sri Lanka, in Group A of the FIBA-Asia World Championship qualifier in Tianjin, China next month.

Updated Jones Cup 2009 Schedule [CLICK HERE]

Neither is he bristling over a statement made by an Iranian player discounting the RP team as a contender for a top three spot to the 16th World Championship in Istanbul, Turkey next year.

That’s a good thing, the Iranians being complacent and counting us out,” he said. “That will give us the incentive to prove them wrong.”

Guiao, instead, is fretting over how to go about choosing the final 12 players for Tianjin – from a roster of 14 – a judgment he has to hand down in the midst of the Taipei tournament.

All of these guys have invested so much in the team, and all of them had been performing well without any exception since the SEABA,” he said.

Injuries and illness, Guiao said, will play a big part in determining who eventually to take aside for a quiet talk.

We will still rely on our first criteria – the least healthy guys are going to be the prime candidates for the cutoff,” he said.

With forward Kelly Williams still recovering from a blood disorder, the arrival of 6-foot-9 Japeth Aguilar from the States two weeks ago has brought back to 14 the number of candidates.

And though Guiao has refused to guarantee the inclusion of any player to the official lineup, it is largely believed the shot-blocking son of former Northern Consolidated center Peter Aguilar is a shoo-in.

A couple others may also have a foot in the door.

I would hate to cut somebody like Ryan Reyes,” Guiao said. “But if he’s not healthy then, we have to make that decision. I’m very hopeful, however, that he can be healthy at least for Tianjin.

Reyes joined Jayjay Helterbrand and Sonny Thoss on the bench after pulling a hamstring against Malaysia in the 8th SEABA Men’s Championship in Medan, Indonesia last April.

Helterbrand (hamstring) and Thoss (strained knee) have since returned, leaving Reyes’ condition in doubt.

A big question looms in the horizon: What if all 14 players are healthy by July 22, the deadline for submission of entries to the 25th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship?

Then I will have a big headache,” Guiao said. “But I would rather have that problem, choosing from 14 healthy guys, than having somebody injured.

Mayweather-Marquez Will Be at 144

7/09/2009 | , | 3 comments »

source: Mark Vester | boxingscene.com

Despite all of the rumors that are flooding about overseas, the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Juan Manuel Marquez bout will take place at 144-pounds. There have been rumors flying all over the United States and Mexico that Mayweather's side changed the weight to 147-pounds.

Eric Gomez, vice-president of Golden Boy Promotions, says the contracts were signed for a weight range of 143 to 144-pounds and that's were the fight will take place when the boxers step in the ring on September 19 in Las Vegas.

"The fight was signed at 143 to 144-pounds, nothing more and nothing less. We heard the rumors but we didn't care [about them] until Juan Manuel contacted us and it definitely bothered us because we announced the fight and the only change that was made was the date," Gomez told The Record.

Gomez explained that just because the fight is being billed as a "welterweight fight" - does not mean the fight will take place at the welterweight limit.

"When a fight is agreed to take place between 141 to 147-pounds, it is called a welterweight fight because it breaks the category of junior welterweight [140]," Gomez said.

Tough Filipino featherweight Michael Farenas sees action on Top Rank Promotions “Latin Fury 10” in Mexico on July 25.

However, there’s no word as yet on who his opponent is on the fight card headined by promising Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Farenas who has a record 25-2-2 with 22 knockouts was picked up by Carl Penalosa at the Wild Card Gym on Tuesday and taken to San Diego where he will wind down his training at the Alliance Gym under Carl who is the brother of two-division world champions Gerry and Dodie Boy Penalosa.

Farenas is coming off a spectacular 1st round knockout of veteran Walter Estrada (35-9, 24 KO’s) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on May 1, 2009 and according to Penalosa is in good shape.

The hard-hitting protégé of Gerry Penalosa nailed Estrada with a vicious left hook that sent the Colombian crashing to the canvas with referee Tony Weeks not even bothering to count at 2:59 of the opening round.

Conditioning expert Alex Ariza who puts Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao into tremendous shape for his fights told us some weeks ago that Farenas was a good fighter and very strong.

Guiao on RP 5's Final 12: Health is main concern

7/08/2009 | , , | 9 comments »

source: gmanews.tv

Health issues could play a big part in coach Yeng Guiao’s final 12-man selection that will comprise Powerade-Team Pilipinas to the FIBA-Asia men’s basketball championship in Tianjin, China this August.

With just about everybody in his current 14-man pool playing according to their potentials – including new recruit Japeth Aguilar – Guiao is forced to use the well-being of the players as the key standard for their inclusion.

We will still rely on our first criteria – the least healthy guys are going to be the prime candidates for the cutoff," said Guiao.

The national mentor has to hand down his final lineup for the FIBA-Asia tournament at least two weeks from now.

By that time, Team Pilipinas would already be in the midst of its campaign in the William Jones Cup tournament in Taipei.

That will be the most difficult decision probably coming in the next three weeks," said Guiao.

All of these guys have invested so much in the team, and all of them had been performing well without any exception since the SEABA (tournament last April)."

With forward Kelly Williams still recovering from a blood disorder, the arrival of the 6-foot-9 Aguilar from the States two weeks ago has brought back to 14 the number of candidates.

And though Guiao has refused to guarantee the inclusion of any player to the official lineup, it is largely believed the shot-blocking son of former Northern Consolidated center Peter Aguilar is a shoo-in.

I would hate to cut somebody like Ryan Reyes," Guiao said. “But if he’s not healthy then we have to make that decision. I’m very hopeful, however, that he can be healthy at least for Tianjin."

Guaio admitted he’ll be in an even bigger bind if all 14 players will be healthy when the July 22 deadline comes.

Then I will have a big headache," Guiao said. “But I would rather have that problem, choosing from 14 healthy guys, than having somebody injured.

San Miguel Take Game 4 , Tie Series at 2-2

7/08/2009 | | 0 comments »

Gabe Freeman is not the Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference Best Import for nothing.

Freeman came up with the most crucial plays down the stretch as San Miguel Beer scored a 106-104 escape over Barangay Ginebra Wednesday to bring their championship series at the Araneta Coliseum to square one anew.

Freeman's basket off his own offensive rebound and pair of charities in the last 13.5 seconds gave the Beermen a 105-101 lead that would prove critical when one is playing a team like the Kings.

And Ginebra reprised its never-say-die attitude once more, with Noel draining a clutch triple off a timeout, putting the crowd favorites within one, still 10.7 ticks left.

Then all went for naught after Mike Cortez split his charities just one second later.

In the frenetic series of events that ensued, Ginebra coach Jong Uichico was not able to call his lone remaining timeout and Chico Lanete and Ronald Tubid, instead of going for a mere equalizer, each missed their respective three-point try.

The victory should be a sweet one for SMB coach Siot Tanquingcen, coming as it did on the heels of a 103-116 loss in Game 3. Yet he first opted to lash out at the game officials for what he termed as being drawn in by the predominantly pro-Ginebra crowd.

Not taking anything away from Ginebra because they played really hard and they shot very well. But we're not getting any breaks from the refs,” he said, partly referring to the 28 fouls called against them.

Konting kanti kami, foul agad ang tawag. Pag nakanti mo kahit balahibo lang nila, nasa foul line na sila,” he said. “Pero it's human nature. We just have to deal with it.”

Uichico said it all boiled down to SMB's 24 offensive rebounds which the Beermen translated to 23 points.

Just take two or four points off those we could have won it,” he said.

Freeman wound up with 23 points and 21 rebounds, with Dondon Hontiveros adding 19 points and Cortez and Danny Ildefonso combining for 33.

Newly-crowned season MVP Jayjay Helterbrand and Noel each had 22 points for Ginebra, although the former had to sit out the game's last three minutes when his injured hamstring acted up, prompting Uichico to rest the newly-crowned MVP.

Noel also had 18 rebounds and four assists, but missed three straight free throws in the last 16.2 seconds, following Freeman's putback.

The game had 18 deadlocks and 17 lead changes, the most in a PBA championship game since Talk 'N Text and Red Bull forged 13 and 23, respectively, in their 2002 Commissioner's Cup finale.

Despite Tanquingcen's post-game insinuations, SMB actually held sway for majority of the fourth quarter, building on what Hontiveros started in the period by posting the game's biggest difference at 99-92, off Cortez's triple, still 3:16 left.

But Ginebra tenaciously crept itself back into the game, led by Eric Menk, who spiked his 21-point output with five points in a 9-2 counter capped by Noel's free throws that tied it up at 101, 37.6 remaining.

At least we had a shot,” noted Uichico.

Earlier, Hontiveros made a mockery of newly-named All-Defensive Team member Ronald Tubid, hitting three straight triples to rally the Beermen from a 71-73 deficit and propping them to an 81-76 lead.

Sunday Salvacion's triple gave Ginebra a 61-56 lead inside the first five minutes of the third period, but the trend that begun in the first half continued as the two teams remained entangled in a tight embrace.

The return of Ildefonso and Marc Pingris, fined and suspended the last time out for trying to go after a Ginebra fan, was expectedly greeted with derision by the predominantly pro-Kings crowd who repeatedly jeered the two.

Still it was SMB which took the half, 47-46, mainly due to Cortez, who went 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and 3-for-4 inside it for 12 points in the second period.

Freeman was no slouch either as he already teetered on the brink of a double-double with nine points and 12 boards at the half.

Helterbrand and Noel prevented Ginebra from falling too far behind as the former scattered 12 of his 14 first half points in the second period with the latter notching 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Beermen actually led by as much as 22-16 early but no immediate breakaway was forthcoming as the two teams battrled through 10 deadlocks and eight lead changes in the first 24 minutes of play.

The scores:

San Miguel 106 - Freeman 23, Hontiveros 19, Cortez 18, Ildefonso 15, Villanueva 9, Washington 9, Pena 7, Pingris 6, Racela 0, Pennisi 0.

Ginebra 104 - Helterbrand 22, Noel 22, Menk 21, Tubid 10, Reavis 10, Baguio 9, Salvacion 5, Lanete 2, Mamaril 2, Wilson 1.

Quarters: 24-26, 47-46, 71-73, 106-104.
