World No. 34 and Asia's No. 7, Gilas Pilipinas Men, secured a come-from-behind win in their first game in the four-nation Doha International Cup 2025 against the host, Asia's No. 20, Qatar, 74-71, early Saturday morning, February 15, 2025 (PHL time), at the sold-out, 5,000-seater Qatar University Sports Arena in Doha.
Gilas trailed 18-20 after the opening quarter and remained behind by two at halftime, 38-40. Qatar then took control in the third, outscoring Gilas to build a nine-point lead, 60-51, heading into the final frame.
With their backs against the wall and the support of Filipino fans in the crowd, Gilas unleashed a fierce 23-11 run in the fourth quarter, stepping up their defense and making key plays in the final moments. Their composure under pressure proved crucial as they erased the deficit and completed the comeback victory.
The Gilas Pilipinas, mentored by Tim Cone, includes Justin Brownlee, June Mar Fajardo, Jamie Malonzo, Scottie Thompson, AJ Edu, Calvin Oftana, CJ Perez, Dwight Ramos, Chris Newsome, Carl Tamayo, Kevin Quiambao, Mason Amos, and Troy Rosario, with Jong Uichico, Richard Del Rosario, Sean Chambers, and Josh Reyes serving as assistant coaches.
