After suffering a 60-73 loss against Chinese Taipei Team B and securing their first win of the tournament against Malaysia with a score of 74-63, the world No. 40 & Asia's No. 7 Philippines will try to achieve back-to-back wins against undefeated Japan, who overwhelmed Taipei A 97-46 and Taipei B 94-42. However, Japan’s Universiade team escaped a late rally by the Philippines (1-2) to win 85-83.
Five Japanese players finished in double figures, with Sato Takako leading the way with 13 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal. Fujisawa Yuka had 13 points on 3-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc, while Yamamoto Haruka added 11 points and 4 rebounds.
Gilas Women star Afril Bernardino led the Philippines in a losing effort with a double-double of 21 points (7/11 2pts, 7/8 FT), 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 6 steals, and 3 blocks in 25 minutes of play. Jack Animam had her own double-double of 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Khate Castillo displayed great shooting, making 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, to finish with 12 points, while Naomi Panganiban had a solid performance with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist. Janine Pontejos contributed 9 points (3-of-8 from three-point range), 4 assists, and a steal."
Gilas Women will try to get back in the win column against Thailand on July 9 (Update: Gilas def. Thailand, 68-58) and Taipei A on July 10 at 7:00pm.
