World no.37 Gilas Pilipinas Men (1-1) lost to the world no. 23 Georgia men's national basketball team (1-1), 94-96 in the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) on Thursday, July 4 at the Arena Riga in Latvia. [HIGHLIGHTS]
Gilas Pilipinas' 20-point comeback fell short against Georgia, 94-96. Despite the defeat, the Philippines still advanced to the OQT semifinals as the second seed in Group A with a 1-1 record. Entering the game, Georgia needed to beat Gilas by 19 points or more to advance to the next round.
The Philippines will play against world No. 12 Brazil in the semifinals on Saturday at 8:30 PM (PHL time), while Latvia will face Cameroon in the other semifinal pairing.
The crossover semifinals are scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 6th.
"We had our tickets to leave tomorrow, I guess we're gonna have to move it back a little bit. That's how surprised we are. It's the first time I feel good about losing. It could have been an easy panic time when we were down 20, but they really showed their resilience. Kai Sotto is in the hospital checking his rib." Coach Tim Cone said during the post-game press conference.
