FIBA U18 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers 2024. The Gilas Boys opened their campaign on a winning note against hosts Malaysia, 97-71, on the opening day of the 2024 FIBA U18 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. [VIDEO].
Andy Gemao led the Philippines in scoring with a game-high 17 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block in 18 minutes of play. Two Gilas boys finished with a double-double. Wilhelm Lawrence Cabonilas had 16 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks, while Marc Daniel Burgos added 10 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block.
Gilas had a slim lead of 2 points at the end of the opening frame and outscored Malaysia 28-7 in the second quarter to extend the lead to 51-28, and continued to control the game for the remainder of the match.
The Philippines shot 47% (33-of-70), including 4-of-20 from the three-point line, while the Malaysians shot 35% (29-of-82) and made 8-of-38 from beyond the arc. Gilas outrebounded the Malaysians 54-43, had more assists 20-17, more steals 12-8, and more blocks 6-1.
The Josh Reyes-mentored Gilas U18 will be back in action against Thailand (0-1) on Saturday, July 20, at 4:00pm [VIDEO] and Indonesia (1-0) on Sunday, July 21, at 4:00pm. Indonesia defeated Thailand, 70-56, in the opening game of the tournament.
Only two SEABA spots is at stake for the 2024 FIBA U18 Asia Cup, scheduled from September 2 to 9 in Amman, Jordan.
