World no.37 Gilas Pilipinas Men put up a gallant stand but suffered an 84-73 loss to the world no. 24 Turkey men's national basketball team in a tune-up game early Friday morning, June 28 (PHL time) at the Besiktas Akatlar Culture and Sports Complex in Istanbul, Turkey. [GAME HIGHLIGHTS]
Turkey used a strong second half to beat the Philippines in their three-point shooting game. Turkey shot 14-of-41 from beyond the arc and made 12-of-21 in the 2-point area while Gilas shot 5-of-17 threes and 26-of-44 in the 2-point field goal area.
Tarık Biberovic led the hosts with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Can Korkmaz had a solid game of 12 points and a perfect 9-of-9 from the freethrow line with 3 rebounds and an assist. Turkey is preparing for the next window of the 2025 FIBA Eurobasket qualifiers, while the Tim Cone-mentored Gilas is gearing up for their FIBA OQT campaign.
Justin Brownlee led Gilas in a losing effort with 21 points (9/15 2pts, 1/7 3pts), 5 rebounds, and 1 assist, while June Mar Fajardo posted a double-double with 17 points (7/13 fg, 3/4 ft), game-high 11 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block in 29 minutes of play. Kai Sotto, who fouled out with 2:35 left in the game, added 7 points (3/4 fg, 1/1 3pts), 3 rebounds, and 4 assists in 20 minutes, while Dwight Ramos had an all-around game with 4 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and a block.
