The Tim Cone-mentored Gilas Pilipinas has just concluded their closed-door training camp at the Inspire Sports Academy in Laguna as they prepare for the 2024 FIBA Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in Latvia, taking place from July 2-7.
This is Gilas' sole tune-up game on home turf before the team departs for Europe on Tuesday. In Europe, the 11-man Gilas team will face Turkey on June 27 and Poland on the 29th in a pair of exhibition matches. Gilas will kick off their 2024 FIBA OQT campaign against world #6 Latvia on July 3 at 11:55PM (PHL time) and world #23 Georgia on July 4 at 8:30PM (PHL time) at Arena Riga, Latvia.
Gilas Pilipinas consists of Justin Brownlee, June Mar Fajardo, Calvin Oftana, Chris Newsome, CJ Perez, Dwight Ramos, Carl Tamayo, Kai Sotto, Kevin Quiambao, Japeth Aguilar, and Mason Amos. Gilas will miss the services of the three injured players: Scottie Thompson, AJ Edu, and Jamie Malonzo. The assistant coaches of Gilas are Jong Uichico and Sean Chambers, while Richard del Rosario is the team manager.
While the Mustangs, currently competing in the Asian Tournament, are coached by former Rain or Shine coach Chris Gavina. The team is led by ex-PBA players Alex Cabagnot and Rashawn McCarthy, and includes former Alab Pilipinas import, 7-foot-6 Sam Deguara and Geo Chiu. The Mustangs previously acquired the rights to former NBA stars Dwight Howard, DeMarcus Cousins, and Quinn Cook. However, these three players will not be participating in games for the Mustangs until the end of this month as per PBA.ph.
