Led by as much as 24, San Miguel Beermen (4-3) survived a late run by Barangay Ginebra (4-3) in the 2023-24 PBA Commissioner's Cup on Friday, December 15 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen led 56-36 at halftime and maintained it through the end of the third quarter, 73-52. Early in the fourth quarter, Ginebra used a 20-2 run to cut the deficit to 79-75 with 5:22 remaining. But the Beermen, led by Jericho Cruz and Chris Ross, made a 13-0 run, extending their lead to 92-75 in under two minutes. The Beermen won 95-82, ending their two-game skid, while Ginebra suffered their back-to-back loss.
Veteran Chris Ross led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, along with 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals in 34 minutes of play. Don Trollano had a solid SMB debut with 16 points (3/4 2pts, 3/6 3pts, 1/1ft), to go with 6 rebounds, 1 steal and a block in 32 minutes while Jericho Cruz added 16 points (3/7 3pts), 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
