World no. 26 and Asia's no. 2 Gilas Pilipinas Youth secured a hard-fought victory to beat Asia's no. 5 and world no. 31 Japan, 64-59 in the quarterfinal of the 2023 FIBA U16 Asian Championship on early Saturday morning, September 23 (PHL time) at the Al-Gharafa Sports Club Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha, Qatar. The Josh Reyes-mentored Gilas Pilipinas Youth U16 advances to the semifinals and will play the undefeated Australia on early Sunday morning at 12:30am, September 24 (PHL time) [LIVE].
The four semifinalists at the 2023 FIBA U16 Asian Championship — Philippines, Australia, China, and New Zealand — have secured spots in the 2024 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup, scheduled to take place in Turkey from June 29 to July 7, 2024.
