Hidilyn Diaz, who won silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics, became the Philippines first ever Olympic gold medalist on Monday, July 26, winning the women's 55kg category for weightlifting at Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Diaz recorded a 97kg in the snatch and 127kg – an Olympic record — in the clean and jerk for a total of 224kg (Olympic record) to beat world record holder Liao Qiuyun (223kg total) of China who settled for silver, while Kazakhstan's Zulfiya Chinshanlo took home the bronze medal with 213kg.
