With Serbian coach Rajko Toroman now out of the equation, the next Smart Gilas Pilipinas head coach will come from the pool of high-profile local mentors.
Sources said Talk ‘N Text coach Chot Reyes has the inside track, but Smart Gilas operations manager Butch Antonio played it coy, saying the national team program would take off with a meeting of the minds among the four coaches in the select group.
Apart from Reyes, who recently steered the Tropang Texters to the PBA Philippine Cup crown, the other candidates are multititled PBA coaches Norman Black, Jong Uichico and Ryan Gregorio.
“We already told coach Rajko that he won’t be rehired as Smart Gilas head coach,” said Antonio.
Toroman, who steered the PH five to a fourth-place performance in the Fiba Asia Championship in Wuhan, China, last year, came to Manila last week to pick up the things he left behind in his apartment and went back to Belgade in a huff.
Antonio said there’s a need to sit down with the coaches during the ongoing 12-day PBA break before the league resumes with the import-flavored Commissioner’s Cup on Feb. 10.
“There’s no fixed date on the meeting but we have to schedule it at once,” said Antonio. “The agenda will be to establish the framework of the program from the candidates to training to tournament schedules.”
Antonio earlier hinted that the core of Smart Gilas would come from Sinag Pilipinas, a talented bunch composed mostly of collegiate players who captured the gold medal in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia.
Reyes, who has eight PBA titles in a tie for fourth with Uichico, has become a strong contender for the coaching portfolio after sitting as a Toroman assistant in the failed mission to nail an Olympic slot in London last year.

Again, sa kalakarang ng hiring ng coach sa Pinas pag foreigner or outsider mainit ang mga mata ng mga local coaches. I think the key paragraph sa article na to is yong last part ng last paragraph and I quote "Reyes, as a Toroman assistant in the failed mission to nail an Olympic slot in London last year." the key word is FAILED MISSION, kaya siguro di na kinuha si Rajko but if you will see it in the positve 4th place finish is better than 8th place.

Toroman selected douthit . many people questioned it because of the height and the look but remember what he brings to the game. Toroman pushed the gilas to their best. maski si japhet nagkasilbi hindi tulad ngaun.. prove na instant superstars ung core ng gilas.. mga walang utang na loob.. mas maganda ung basketball iq ni Ato agustin kesa kay chot.. :) international coach knows better than coaches that they can do the same. remember na sa katangahan ni coach kaya natalo ung team nila dati.. dahil sa isang technical foul nya..

If chot coaches gilas 2, he should resign as tnt coach. otherwise, divided attention na naman and cramming ang mangyayari. maawa naman kayo sa bansa natin. sayang lang pera ni mvp kung hindi seryosohin ang gilas 2 program.

not hiring toroman is a big mistake! maybe the fact that gilas recently had a decent placing got in to their heads and felt that we do not need help anymore. maybe politics got in the way. maybe it's a case of them being overly nationalistic to the point of hindering potential. no one really knows for sure but them. im not saying that our local coaches are not good enough, but i do believe that we still have a lot to learn from toroman. and chot reyes as head coach? i say we're doomed!
i agree na ang ipalit yung di tumitingin sa school or organization na kinabibilangan kung hindi ay kung ano ang kelangan ng national team. I think, the best option is Jong Uichico or Tim Cone. Chot Folds on big games, ang i am talking about international games. Iba sya magcoach pagnasa PBA sya pero sira ang diskarte nya pag international na. saka isa siya sa may kasalanan kung bakit tayo natalo nung panahon ni Cone. Siya ang assigned magscout sa Korea nung panahon ni Cone and di sya nagscout. Nung panahon ni Jong, alam ko (this needs to be verified) sya din ang naka-assign magscout sa Korea and hindi nya nascout ng mabuti yung pumatay sa atin sa dying seconds ng game. tapos nung turn nya, nagfold sya against Iran. that was a crucial game and as usual di sya nagscout ng maigi dun.
Chot folds at the wrong time, and each time he is given the chance but he continually fold. I believe mas may bayag si Cone or si Jong to continue what they did then.

Siguradong makakapasok na sana tayo sa World Championship next year kung Smart Gilas Gilas 1 ang ipapadala with the same coach on Toroman with the addition of 2 big men from the PBA. alam nyo kasi nung time ni coach chot en mga magagaling na PBA players yung team ng pinas, wala pa ring focus sa national team yun. almost 1 month lang yata preparation nila, masyado lang kumpyansa. ok naman style ni coach chot, kung mey DOUTHIT lang nung time niya eh baka 1st place pa yun. bulok yung style ni TOROMAN, si DOuthit lang nagpa galing sa team niya na puro GUARD.. tama lang na ndi na ibalik si toroman, paano natin malalaman ang buong kakayahan ng TEAM PINAS kung ndi tayo mag ttry ng iba. mas maganda talaga dito sa pinas.
Wag na tyo masyadong umasa sa PBA owners at PBA players. Kahit sino pa coach, kahit mangulelat pa, basta makita na buong puso naglalaro, susuportahan ko pa din ang national team. Ang PBA ginagamit lang ng mga negosyante to promote/advertise their product. Walang pakialam kung magimprove o bumaba ang quality ng basketball. Kung baga una muna ang kita bago ang passion sa sports. Pasalamat nlng tayo merong MVP na nagtataguyod ng sports sa Pilipinas.
1.. Easy lang kayo! di maiiwasan ang red tape and politics kahit saan organization..di pa naman tayo nakakasiguro na may ebidensiya na biktima nga ng politics si Toroman...
2.Ang problema sa inyo di pa nga nabubuo yung coaching staff at nakakapili ng mga bagong players talo na agad..hintayin nyo muna bumuo ng line-up hanggang judgement day ng Fiba World Qualifying kung talagang uubra ang mga local coaches natin sa Fiba...
3.Kung i compare natin ang mga local coaches natin sa mga foreign counterparts nila...malayo na ang narating ng mga foreign coaches and bibilang pa ng maraming cavan ng bigas bago mahabol nila Yeng at chot yung skills ng mga fiba coach..
4..Wag muna tayo umasa agad na mag qualify tayo sa World basketball and Olympics...tanggapin na natin ang katotohan we need to add more size,skills, focus and long term commitment para ma-achive yung slot sa fiba worlds and olympics.
5. Future Gilas will qualify in Olympics and Fiba World not in our time and sa current leadership ng sbp...malamang bibilang tayo ng taon at dekada para mangyari yun...habaan lang ang pasensiya...let us enjoy the basketball game.

A rag tag team of Petron nahirapan siyang manalo. Breaks lang ng game t naka chamba siya.
Alalahanin natin na walang best of 7 sa FIBA Asia.
Dahil sa spsp niya kay MVP siniraan niya si Toroman.
Si CHOT REYES ang pinaka WEAK na nag COACH ng NATIONAL TEAM natin. Tim Cone and Norman Black are better.

Ok naman si Coach Toroman. Ang problema nga lang di maibigay ang mga kailangan niyang mga player. Maganda na sana ang sistema tuloy tuloy lang. Para na naman tayong bumalik sa kinder.
haha kaya inalis si toroman kc gusto ni mvp ung mga players lng nea ang kunin sa national team (ateneo, san beda, tnt, meralco)..kapag si toroman ang coach gusto nea ng competitive na mga players..sabi ni toroman dati he will accept ung offer at contract pero titignan muna nea ang mga players na involve sa program.

this is such a sad and bad news. asking for Help from a non-Filipino is no shame. That's having pride for the wrong reasons. Toroman made the RP team known again after so long and he's willing to fight with us to reach that Olympic dream. What's so shameful bout that. I think this isn't bout Filipino pride but politics and greed for attention that they don't deserve. I hope they prove us wrong with this move for the RP Basketball because my prediction is were going down. AGAIN.

I agree with you! To those who are playing the "nationalism card" here, don't you realize that China has an American coach? Nakaaway nga ni Toroman yun last year!
Why did they employ an non-Chinese? Because they're looking ahead! They want to become world champions or Olympic champions one day and they know that a Chinese coach won't be able to take them there (well, not yet anyway), that's why they hired an American coach so that: 1) the Chinese team would realize their goals in the short term; and 2) in the long term, they will learn whatever they can from that American coach so that one day, a Chinese coach will once again hold the reigns of the Chinese team.
Yan ang gusto kong mangyari sa Philippine team kaya gusto ko si Toroman ang maging coach para mas mapabilis din yung pag-angat ng team standing natin. At higit sa lahat, matuto tayo ng international coaching tactics/techniques para isang araw, Pinoy na rin ulit ang maging coach ng PHL team!!!! Yan ang tamang nationalism!
