Filipino hopeful Jeson Patrombon faces a livewire foe in seventh seed Duilio Beretta of Peru on Monday afternoon (Tuesday morning in Manila) in the US Open Juniors championship in New York.
Patrombon is no stranger to Beretta, who had dealt the Filipino a loss the first time they met in the second round of the French Open last May.
Still, coach Manny Tecson has faith in Patrombon’s chances.
“I am telling Jeson to set his mind for a long fight (game),” said Tecson in an email message.
It’s going to be a busy day for Patrombon, ranked No. 42, as he joins hands with Michael Zhu of the US against the tandem of Beretta and French Open partner Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador in doubles play.
The odds are against the 17-year-old Patrombon and Zhu, who will be teaming up for only the first time.
Beretta and Quiroz are seeded third and have been competing together the last five months.
