Smart Gilas-Team Pilipinas bows to Qatar NT (Stankovic Cup 2010)

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Qatar ascertained their dominance early in the game, and then cruised along, albeit at times in tumultuous waters, for a 66-61 win over Philippines in Group B on Tuesday.

The win put Qatar on top of the standings as the first team to win all their three outings so far in the competition. Philippines wound up their Group B engagements with a 2-2 record.

Targuy Ngombo, for the third game running returned a game-high with 29 points.

Ngombo, who had scored a tournament-high 39 points against Syria and a game-high 24 against Jordan, went for another impressive 60% field record (11/15 on the paint and 1/5 from the perimeter) and 67% (4/6) from the foul-line.

Ngombo also pulled down nine rebounds to add value to his presence.

Qatar pulled ahead with a 14-0 rally with Ngombo scoring nine points in that spree to close the first quarter 21-6.

There was very little to worry for Ali Fakhroo’s team after that.

Philippines clawed their way into the game and attempted a fight back, but that initial deficit proved too heavy to surmount.

Ali Ali scored a dozen points and collected as many boards for a double-double for Qatar.

Marcio Lassiter and Chris Tiu with 11 points each were the leading scorers for Philippines. FIBA Asia

The Scores:

Qatar 66 - Ngombo 29, Ali A 12, Daoud 8, Ndour 8, Saeed 7, Ndiaye 2, Salem 0, Ali M 0, Mohamed 0.

Philippines 61 - Lassiter 11, Tiu 11, Baracael 10, Casio 8, Ababou 6, Aguilar 6, Taulava 5, Barroca 4, Ballesteros 0.

Quarters: 21-6, 37-27, 52-43, 66-61

more to follow...

Chris Tiu: "We're now 3rd place in our bracket & will probably play Chinese Taipei or Iran on Friday for quarterfinals. Now we can rest a bit for two days. Kuya Asi has been fitting in perfectly. Banger, fighter & experienced. Just what we need.Dunked twice against Jordan, havent seen that in years."

This is when you need a middle defensive presence like Douthit and a KWIll or a JWash. that is the difference in the first half. They scored so much inside the paint. Our sagging defense also allowed them easy looks from the outside.

  7. Long Beach Jackrabbit // August 11, 2010 1:15 AM

Douthit where are you. Need you asap!!!!!!!

  18. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 2:07 AM

sayang, konti nalang. i do think malakas ang philippine team. the guards are ok na for this competition. they just need additional big men pa like taulava, and kelly williams siguro

  19. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 2:08 AM

Why is Qatar allowed to play several African players? This is not a Qatar national team, this is an African team.

  20. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 2:08 AM

Go Team Philippines Fight Fight Fight!!

  25. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 2:22 AM

    TALO TAYO!!!!!

ANG NAGPATALO SI COACH TOROMAN...but I don't know if that was a ploy of Toroman, he insisted in keeping Lassiter the whole 4th quarter instead of pairing Aguilar with Taulava,,,,,,CLEARLY THERE'S NO REBOUNDER EXCEPT FOR ASI IN THE FOURTH,,,,GUESS WHAT ASI JUST HAD 2 REBOUNDS THE WHOLE 4TH QUARTER BECAUSE HE WAS BEING BOXED OUT BY 2-3 TALL OPPONENTS,,,,,,, AND BESIDES I THOUGHT AGUILAR PLAYED WELL DEFENSIVELY AND HAS A LOT OF MONSTER REBOUNDS,,,,,WE CLEARLY COULD HAVE WON THAT GAME IF TOROMAN PAIRED AGUILAR WITH ASI.......MAYBE IT WAS A PLOY,,,,ONLY TOROMAN KNOWS,,,BUT WISE MEN ALWAYS SAY,,IT IS BETTER TO PASS THE EASIEST WAY COMPARED TO THE HARD WAY,,RIGHT...I MEAN WHY FACE THE A MORE FORMIDABLE TEAM IN THE QURTER FINALS INSTEAD OF FACING THE LESSER ONE...

WE WERE NOT OUTPLAYED, WE COULD HAVE WON EASILY,,,BUT THEN AGAIN IT WAS COACH TOROMAN'S CALL,,SAYANG PANALO SANA TAYO VS QATAR!!!!!!
SBP AND PBA, please do your share in allowing the following players:
    Hontiveros
    Yap
    Washington
    Mercado
    Norwood

Mabuhay tau lahat at mabuhay ang smart gilas at PBA.

Er, we've been playing QATAR for over a decade fellas and they have always had dark skinned players. And so are their citizens. (well, mixed actually.)

Remember Yaseem Mahmoud, the ABConfederation / FIBA Asia slam dunk champion in the late 90s and Osama Mubarak? Both are full blooded Qataris and they are black. That's really their color. Back then, we didn't notice because they hardly ever won against us.

Middle Eastern colors range from White (Lebanon) to midtone (Iraq and Iran) Dark (Qatar and Pakistani). Kuwaitis are also very dark in skin tone.

This game was lost in the FIRST QUARTER. Gilas actually played better ball than Qatar from 2nd to 4th but the first Q showed poor defense and disorganized offense.

This may have been the consequence of a shallow bench. Lack of rotation limited their options to adjust.

But the good thing is we showed na kaya natin. If there was a few more minutes, we would have likely won. We were the better team for three quarters but they had just enough of a lead to cushion them.

    KAYA NATIN MGA ITO!

  30. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 2:36 AM

Great Game! Di ako hater, pero sana maimprove pa shooting natin! Go Smart Gilas all the way

  31. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 2:36 AM

  32. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 2:44 AM

Give priority on 3 points shooting, Smart gilas players must be consistent on 3 points shooting in order to win games. The players must pratice to shoot 800 to 1000 balls on three points area alone. That's our hope outside shooting. We have the chance to reclaim the glory of basketball in asia. Add kelly Williams, Dondon or Yap and C. Baguio or Jared on the present line-up, I think Gilas is has big chance.

    Gob bless to all.

    ------------------

  49. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 4:33 AM

ipahiram nlng sana c yap...ganun din nman...wala nang b-meg magagamit pa sya sa shooting nag gilas...at d same time slasher...atleast may isang consistent shooter...bigyan lng xa ng play...ksi pag mag lowpost c asi mag dodouble team cla sa ilalim ksi malaki si asi, kaya ma-oopen ung mga shooters...

-words from Japanese NT hotshot Kawamura

  54. proud // August 11, 2010 5:06 AM

Go SG!! PS: wag niyo pag pilitin si james yap. Liability sa depensa wala siyang lateral.

I think it's time for the pba and sbp to sit together and talk for the philipine nt's preparation for the asian games and olympic qualifying for asia. They set aside their difference, kung ano man ang napagkasunduan nila noon ibasura na yun at mag-usap uli ang dalawang kampo for the betterment of our national team. They need a consistent point guard, a slasher and a big man that can give the team a shot in the post.

Ok lang yan. Losing like this is part of development. Its where we see our weakness and the things we need to improve. Pano ka mag improve if wala kang makitang kulang o mali. So cheers.. Now we see that we need a consistent outside shooter .. Then we will find one. The problem with the 4 and 5 position is almost solved with the inclusion of Asi and maybe KWill. Maybe we can ask a deadly outside shooter from PBA to beef up this line-up, like Yap/Hontiveros/Ritualo/David. Our guards are OK.

Imagine even qatar can beat us.

Kulang sa Mac Baracael/ Hire Ronald Tubid or Mark Cardona or Gary David or PJ Simon.

Ayos lang 5 points lang lamang considering na yung Qatar ang lalaki ng players nila and marami dito ay Africans.....The results, I believe would have been better if Douthit, Slaughter and Lutz played...Bugbog c Japeth and Asi eh...Nevertheless, Kudos to SBP, Gilas, to the PBA, to Asi and to all the Filipino people...This is what we need...UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT AND COOPERATION for us to succeed...Not crab mentality and jealousy...This is for the good of all of us..Mabuhay!

  83. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 10:35 AM

Go Gilas!!!! Good luck in the next game!!!

yep i remember osama mubarak was one of qatar's most profilic guards in the early 2000s. very athletic and exciting to watch, this high-leaping guard resembles iverson in his prime. and yes he is authentic qatari.

kulang sa defense ans smart gilas from point guard to smallguard positon dapt palitan na then ung small forward natin masyado maliit againts Qatar team san makita ni coach toroman replace casio and tui kulang sa movement at passing di maronung pumasa to handle the ball ababu and barroca kulang pa din sa passing at defense the opponent you need at least 5 rotation tall big man like jay washington at jummar fajardo sama nyo narin si kelly wiliams at norwood for outside shooting james yap at hontiveros ryan reyes can handle and good passing skills then reseved unit na matngkad jay-r reyes 6'8 din yun

We must now win our Quarterfinal match which would make Team Pilipinas a semifinalist and at the same time qualifying the Philippines already to the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship. With that, I'll say we had accomplished our mission there in Beirut even if we don't win the championship itself.

A loss means we need to fight it over with the other 3 losing quarterfinalists to get 5th place and the last qualifying slot for the 2011 FIBA-Asia Championship courtesy of this FIBA-aia Stankovic Cup.

Pwedeng by giving screen to shooters or by drawing double team and kick-out pass then shoot?

Wala namang award PINAKA MATAPAT NA TEAM eh? (Pls. Dont Get Me Wrong?

Let's sing! 'anong kailangan? Magtulungan' (pero malay natin may surpresa sila para satin? Sana nga po!)

4.Para sa SG naman.... Hmmmm... So far so good even though we all know that we need IMPROVEMENTS (you need to face it right?) and all you have to do is keep on fighting because you represent our tri-colored flag and always give the glory to OUR LORD!

Coach T... please give Japeth more playing time in QF, para makita naman namin yung sinasabi mong Project Player sya.. but it's fine with me if don't want Japeth to be scout..

The true worth of this team is yet to be seen. What they are showing us are just preveiw of what they are capable of doing. The time is now, SBP and PBA please for the sake of fulfilling our ultimate goal of competing in the olympics, work together as a team. Asi, Kelly,Mercado and the others that coach Toroman is asking must be allowed to play. Ever since, heart and passion is what we are using to challenge those so called "Powerhouse" but now i believed we got the right combination of height, talents, skills to go with our heart and passion. And with this even the mighty China will think twice to challenge us.

  104. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 4:21 PM

Just hope SG wins in the crucial quarter finals. If they win in the quarters a rematch with Qatar or Jordan is possible.

  105. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 4:52 PM

malay natin after mga exposure na ito biglang may lalapit na scout sa 1 or 2 sa mga players nating offering some possible slot in the NBA...pero mas importante parin ang goal natin for gold...

  106. Anonymous // August 11, 2010 5:09 PM

The Philippine Team always had a chance. We always had the talent even though we lacked height. But we lose because of lack in preparation hence you see very sloppy plays and undisciplined attitude in the court. The PBA has a killer line up of shooters from beyond the arc and have fast and agile guards. Now the team is getting more taller players. All they need is more preparation. Hopefully the training this time around is sufficient enough. SG can beat any team in Asia, they just need to be disciplined and they need to get used to the pressure of playing internationally. Hopefully SG puts in the right players in the final line up.

Okay lang kung me dugong Qatari yang mga afrikanong yan, tulad ng Gilas me mga fil foreign players which is allowed naman ng FIBA.Pero hindi eh, They are full blooded Africans mostly from Somalia na naturalized Qatari lang. Ibig sabihin they are breaking the rule of FIBA regarding naturalized players. Isa lang ang allowed ng Fiba, that's why we only have Marcus Douthit. Hindi naman sa takot tayo sa Qatar, we can beat them if our line up is complete and healthy. But i guess having a Qatari as Fiba Asia president does have perks and benefits....

yung black Arabs are basically from Africa. pero bihira yan sa mga lugar malapit sa Persian Gulf. and besides, mga Arabs na din ang nagpapatunay na hindi Afro-Arabs yung mga players ng Qatar ngayon. hindi lang sa basketball and football nila ginagawa yan. sa lahat ng sport disciplines, nag-iimport ang Qatar.

    sa quarter finals dapat talunin natin ang Chinese Taipei. kung manalo tayo sa taipei;

Sana madagdagan pa ang player from PBA to augment our NT. See the result... Only one naturalized player allowed for a team as per Fiba Rules. A complete and healthy Smart Gilas team can beat this African Qatar national team.

Ang contract ni Japeth ay with TNT after the trade made from Burger king (now Air21) so TNT has all the rights to choose where they would like Japeth to play. His pay checks comes from TNT even if he does not play in the PBA.

Similarly in case K Will and Ryan Reyes will be loaned to TNT they will have the same status enjoyed by japeth right now.

In case japeth wants to play in the PBA, he will have to ask permission from Gilas/TNT and he can only play with the TNT team.

A trade with TNT and another PBA ball club will allow him to play in another team.
