PBA board to discuss SBP's request to borrow 3 pro players

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Board is set to tackle in its annual planning session the request made by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to borrow three marquee players to reinforce the national team to the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

Outgoing commissioner Sonny Barrios admitted the country’s governing body for basketball already submitted to his office on Friday a formal request regarding the matter.

The league’s Board of Governors is holding its planning session in Hong Kong from September 1 to 3.

“There are a lot of questions that need to be asked," Barrios pointed out. “There are some governors who are not in favor of this, but there are some who are in favor."

In the letter signed no less by SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan, the cage body asked for the services of two-time MVP James Yap of Derby Ace, Asi Taulava of Coca-Cola and Talk ‘N Text’s Kelly Williams.

Taulava already reinforced the RP-Smart Gilas team in the recent Stankovic Cup, where the Nationals finished fourth and qualified for the 2011 FIBA-Asia Men’s basketball championship in Lebanon.

But Barrios said loaning three players with a lot of fan base for flag and country are again expected to create a gap in the league’s attendance based on the PBA’s past experiences.

The commissioner likewise noted the impact it would create on the campaign of the ball clubs likely to be affected.

Both the PBA and the BAP-SBP (predecessor of SBP) created a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the pro league to loan its best players in the formation of national teams competing in major international tournaments such as the Asian Games and FIBA-Asia meets.

But the MOA has since expired in 2009.

“That’s why the PBA went back to a three-conference because we no longer have an obligation (in the formation of the national team)," said Barrios.

The PBA’s last involvement in the formation of the national team came in 2009 during the FIBA-Asia qualifying meet for the 2010 World Championships. The squad, mentored by Yeng Guiao, made the quarterfinals but finished at eighth place. – JVP, GMANews.TV

That a player who wanted to play or who are currently playing Professional are oblige to play under his countries flag if his/her service are needed.

Or Pwde naman baguhin ang schedule ng PBA pag may mga international competitions such as FIBA and Asian Games. FIBA is a yearly compitition while Asian Games are every after 4 yrs. So pag darating ang FIBA and if Professional players are needed, PBA should adjust there schedules.. ung tinatawag na Offseason ng PBA pag buwan ng FIBA and Asian Games.

Same height at siyempre import na kasingaling nina ASI, James, at K Will.

  5. Anonymous // August 28, 2010 11:43 PM

what is more important mr. commissioner!? your league's attendance or our country's fight for the world championship?! kindly consider the bigger picture of this request; james yap, kelly and asi will surely boost our chances to qualify for the olympics!!! go PILIPINAS!!!!

Well i do hope this pushes through. Playing for the country is a much much different story compared to playing in a local ball club. I would also like to appeal to the PBA to consider this matter for the sake of many Basketball fanatics and i'm sure they are all waiting for this. Don't worry about the revenues because many of the fans vowed to patronize PBA again once you made the deal.

pwede naman mag 15-day break ang PBA in time for the asian games.. if they want, mag tune-up games ang mga pba teams tulad ng ginagawa nila pag off-seasoon to keep their players in shape..

  13. tomtotomtom // August 29, 2010 2:33 AM

if either of these 3 players were not allowed to play in ASIAN GAMES then just name those who doesnt want it.. so we will all know who is the GREEDIEST and personal interest first kind of person. These players (smart gilas team) are the one who goes into the battle and works hard in practice.. play there hearts out and willing to sacrifice for the country.. their victory is also our victory as a country. Lets bring back our glory days as an Asian Powerhouse in Basketball and maybe step into the world stage once again where we still has the best finish ever by an asian country in world basketball championship as 3rd placed overall back in 1954.

PBA and team owners and gOvernors commissioner should listen to us..your patrons.. we are your bosses. We already spoken.. please allow these players to play for the country. Without us there will be no PBA. you will not have your careers. GREED and PERSONAL INTEREST should not get in a way as for these times we all need to help one another for basketball in our country.

  16. Anonymous // August 29, 2010 4:04 AM

mali mali mali... anu kada may international game hiram hiram hiram. san na ung grass roots program. in reality kasi una palang mali na diskarte eh. why? the best players on the land is not representing the country. ngayon anu gagawin mang hihiram ng player. haist...well let me reiterate this.

    taulava
    slaughter
    marcus D. (import)
    japet aquilar
    kelly williams
    jay washington
    mac baracael
    james yap or baguio
    lasiter
    chris tiu
    barocca
    casio

then gumawa kau ng team b, para may transition ang program. you have seen how good we could be with one PBA player within the right system. MVP take aguilar, Baracael, casio, tiu, barocca, lasitter, slaughter and make them the core of meralco team. para they could enhance themselves locally then twing may international games pull them out together with the selected few to support them. then yung team b ng philippine team get some players for meralco kung ongoing yun season. i think the board of gov ng PBA wont have a problem with that, and should consider this kasi nga para sa bayan!

SONY BARRIOS HAS THE SAME MENTALITY WITH FORMER COMMISH JUN BERNARDINO, THEY DONT WANT THE PBA IN CASE MAKA PASOK SA WORLDS NA MAG LARO DAHIL CGURADO LALAMPASUHIN LANG NG OPPOSITION THEREAFTER WILL AFFECT THE PBA'S ATTENDANCE. IT SHOWS WHAT KIND OF A COUNTRY THE PHILIPPINES IS, LACKING THE ENTHUSIASM TO GO FORWARD. THE PBA PEOPLE WOULD LIKE THE AMATUERS INSTEAD TO FIGHT THE HEAVYWEIGHTS OF ASIA AND IF THEY LOOSE, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE THE QUESTION WHAT IF? WE SEND A PBA SELECTION? MAYBE THE RESULTS WILL BE DESIRABLE?? THEREFORE CONFIRMING THAT THE PBA STILL HAS THE BEST PLAYERS IN ASIA, WHICH A WHOPPING MAJORITY DOESNT AGREE BECAUSE AFTER FLOPPING AT MAJOR FIBA TOURNAMENTS, PBA PLAYERS ARE NOW LABELED "BEST BASKETBALL ENTERTAINERS OF ASIA" PLEASE PAKI POST PO THANKS

Ehadadi was a non factor in the game vs Brazil. He's sluggish and looks like he already got the NBA star mentality. Iran sorely missed the services of Bahrami in the loss 81-65 in the hands of Brazil minus Varejao.

PBA Profit>Countrys Honor and why am i not surprised. No i dont blame the PBA, coz its after all a profit driven corp. Just hope theyll be able to work out something in the end.

Pera at kita ang dahilan. Para sa bansa ito. Pag para sa bansa, lahat ay gagawin. Dati napadala na puro PBA players, anong nangyari? Sa Jordan nga di kayo makadikit. Umpisa pa lang, talo na. SMART Gilas players, you sacrificed lucrative income sa PBA to play for the Philippine flag. With or without the requested PBA players, do your best. Proud ako maging Pinoy because of you guys!

I think if we based on the situation in international competition like the FIBA champ i noticed that most of the line up they are using tall frontline compare to our men it is very far from reality! please dnt make our national team as experimental team only!set limit interms of height......atleast 3 ligitimate center...and for the Point guard atleast 6'0ft i will give some example...for nxt year fiba qualifying

Stop the crap of saying that these people are not for the Philippines welfare. Don't you think that the PBA havent given their commitment before? They did correct? You guys are like kids that whatever you want, you should get. If in case the PBA will not be able to lend this players, then we will need to deal with what we have. The PBA havent decided on the matter pero dami na agad naninira sa PBA. Just think about this, if you have a business, like lets say food business, and another entity will take away your 3 best ingredients and your food will not come out the same, then tell me if you will not think twice? Can you guys pay for the other players if let's say the attendance and the gate receipts of the PBA will go down, in turn, will bankcrupt the teams and all the players of that team will loose their jobs? I am for the Philippine team and I would love to get the services of the 3 players involved, but please, spare us with your nuisance comments about how bad the PBA is. That's all bullcrap.

NAGBIGAY NA PALA NG REQUEST, KYA HINDI NYO NA PWEDENG SABIHIN NA WALANG REQUEST AS YOUR PALUSOT NA AYAW MAGPAHIRAM NG PLAYERS.

KUNG AYAW NYO MAGPAHIRAM, PALAGAY KO PAREHO RIN ANG MANGYAYARI BKA MAS MAGIGING MALALA PA ANG EPEKTO SA INYONG GATE ATTENDANCE DAHIL MARAMI ANG MAGBOBOYCOT NG LIGA NINYO.

“There are a lot of questions that need to be asked," Barrios pointed out. “There are some governors who are not in favor of this, but there are some who are in favor."

We Pilipino people are hoping the PBA board will grant the Philippine basketball governing body SBP's request for loaning 3 PBA player for national cause. As Mr. Barrios reasons out the gate attendance will be drop, in fairness to the PBA the gate is now already dropped. Now its time to rebound this 3 player will carry the cross what Mr. Barrios reasons, THINK POSITIVE.

--- Good Luck.. KWill, King James, The Rock prove your worth.. that you belong Asias best and the WOrld's elite basketball player. Show to theme becuase they only focus to Chinese, Iranian and Lebanon. Grab that CHALLENGED as Mr. Caidic proved it at recent 2010 NBA Asia challenged being recognized by NBA greats.

  29. Anonymous // August 29, 2010 9:33 AM

  30. Anonymous // August 29, 2010 10:05 AM

pano akala ng mga taga GILAS kaya nila, SBP kayo din nagsabi noon na di nyo na kailangan ang players from PBA. ano ngaun? bakit humihiram kayo sa mga PROFESSIONALS? hahahaha you guys are in so much trouble finding the right guy. PBA players parin ang pinaka magaling compared to this amatuer guys.

  31. Anonymous // August 29, 2010 10:41 AM

To Mr. Barrios sana naman ipahiram niyo na sa Gilas yung tatlo....HUWAG PURO SHORT-TERM SANA PAG-IISIP NYO.PANG LONG-TERM DIN SANA...KNOWING THAT THE GILAS PLAYERS ARE THE FUTURE OF PBA, IF EVER THEY QUALIFY FOR THE OLYMPICS, I'M SURE, WE, THE FANS WOULD BE MORE ENCHANTED TO WATCH PBA GAMES....ATTENDANCE IN PBA GAMES WILL SHOOT UP......INVESTMENT ANG LENDING OF PLAYERS SA GILAS....KAYA SANA PUMAYAG NA KAYO AND SUPPORT GILAS UNCONDITIONALLY AND ALL THE WAY... WE BADLY NEED UNITY TO SUCCEED AS A NATIONA...

  32. Anonymous // August 29, 2010 10:50 AM

    Pilipinas kesa pera,
    Karangalan kesa kwarta.
    Magkaisa tayo.

SA Akin opinion, mas Maapektohan ang Attendance(go down) kon De Sila(PBA) magpahiram. Because if PBA will lend players to the national Team, it wiil boost support both to the teams who directly lend thier players, loyalty to the products they brougth out, and to the PBA.

The way i see it,Attendance problem is only an Alibi tainted with animosities.Opinion lang po

Merong d inilaro yun lebanon laban sa smart gilas sa stankovic cup.. Si Matt Freije 6'10'' player.. who is intimidated presence and love to shoot from the outside.. anyway marami din namang kulang sa gilas.. patas lng,hehe.. i think with this kind of development i think asia is not behind with it comes to basketball.. Jordan beat by australia by just only 1 and greece beat by china by 8.. Bahrami-less Iran crushed by brazil.. That's what im saying in my pass comment iran can be a force without haddadi but not without bahrami.. I admit im a pilipino but i idolize Bahrami because he is very smart he can shoot in the perimeter.. he can slasher.. he can defend.. an most of all he is a great passer.. making him play a point forward.. 6'7'' Bahrami.. Get well soon.. but beware to our smart gilas,hehe.. as soon as everybody cooperate.. this team will shock asia.. Go smart gilas! GOD bless philippines!

    p-noy VII

Think the other way around, loaning a marquee player by PBA may have good benefits for the PBA league since followers of Smart Gilas will be added to the followers of PBA. kaya payagan na nyo sila hindi ito pang-uuto. reality check lang yung mga pahihiram nyo na PBA players like ASi et al. kapag balik PBA na sila syempre ang mga fans susundan din sila sa PBA. di ba?

for me i understand that negosyo talaga ang gusto ng PBA kaya ito na create mainly for MONEY but of course the government can impose a law that would maybe reschedule their games pag may asian or fiba or olympic games and for those pba players na kinuha for RP team, i think our government has to invest enough money to cover the expenses the pba teams have thrown for those players or maybe the other way to make it even like tax exclusion(1 yr or 2 yrs or something like that) ang team ng pba player for RP team. Basta i know daming ma otak na pinoy to make this be working na win-win ang labas. If there's a will there will always be a way! Go Pilipinas!!!

In any institution you cannot just get what you want. In any endeavor one must weigh the consequence of their action. The Gilas officials had brialliant idea of putting group of young players to play as one cohesive unit. And this is evident now with the present gilas players. But after several tournaments we saw that they are not yet at far with the other Asian teams. They now need to be reinforce by some PBA players. The PBA or the SBP are not to blame on the present situation. Let us stop pointing fingers on who is for the country or who are not. The PBA and SBP will find a way to make our national team competitive in the future tournaments. Let us just wait, remember the goal is the London olympic. Marami pang pwedeng mangyari. Everybody relax and just pray for the best.
