Finishing fourth in the recent Jones Cup was nothing for the Philippine national basketball team to crow about even if it was an improvement from sixth place with a PBA selection last year.
But there is some consolation in the way coach Rajko Toroman’s Smart Gilas squad proudly wore the country’s colors. The team never gave up and competed feverishly in each game. That’s a positive sign. In fact, Gilas could’ve won at least two more if not for its lack of depth – a problem Toroman is now addressing by inviting a handful of PBA cagers to reinforce the lineup for the Asian Games in Guangzhou this November.
Last year, coach Yeng Guiao piloted the Philippines to sixth place with a 2-6 record in the annual Taipei joust. His All-Star roster listed Willie Miller, Jay-Jay Helterbrand, Kerby Raymundo, Gabe Norwood, Arwind Santos and Japeth Aguilar, among others. The team beat Kazakhstan and Chinese-Taipei B but lost to Jordan by 31, Iran by 25, Lebanon by 12, Chinese-Taipei A by nine, Korea by three and Japan by two.
This year, Gilas defeated Chinese-Taipei A and B and the Crocs of Australia but lost to Iran by 13, Japan by 10 and Lebanon by 11. Playing six games in seven days was a huge challenge for Gilas. Only import Marcus Douthit, Marcio Lassiter, Chris Lutz, Jayvee Casio and Mark Barroca saw action the entire stretch. Toroman paced his troops by resting some players alternatively in games where he could afford a limited rotation. Chris Tiu and Mac Baracael, for instance, sat out the Australia contest and Greg Slaughter, the overtime win over Chinese-Taipei A.
Gilas played Japan less than 24 hours after the draining victory over Chinese Taipei A in extension and although coach Tom Wisman’s team had no import, his cagers were a lot fresher, particularly Tomeo Amino and former Phoenix Sun guard Yuta Tabuse who combined for 23 points. Then, in the final game against Lebanon, Gilas ran out of steam down the stretch and frittered away a 15-point lead in the third period. Even if Lebanon didn’t show up with Fadi El-Khatib, 6-5 Elie Estephane of Alabama Southern Community College and former NBA center Jackson Vroman did enough damage to clip Gilas.
No doubt, there’s a lot of pressure on Gilas to win. The ultimate goal is to represent Asia in the 2012 London Olympics and that means capturing the FIBA-Asia championship – second place won’t do – in Beirut next year. But to threaten for the FIBA-Asia title, Gilas must make waves in the Asian Games as a prelude.
* * *
Right now, 17 players are in the Gilas pool. The cast includes Douthit, a 6-10 American whose naturalization papers are being hastily processed to obtain eligibility for Guangzhou. The timing of Douthit’s naturalization depends on Congress which has the authority to make it legal – that means his status is not within Gilas’ control.
The pool will be reduced to 14 with the impending release of Rabeh Al-Hussaini, R. J. Jazul and Rey Guevara who are expected to apply for the coming PBA draft. Al-Hussaini couldn’t adjust to his role with Gilas and may be better off playing in the pros.
A rumor that Barroca may leave Gilas and join the PBA draft was debunked. The former FEU guard is under contract with Gilas and unless he’s released, there’s no way the draft is an option. Besides, a source said Barroca is comfortable in his new role as playmaker, not necessarily a scorer, for Toroman and relishes the experience of suiting up for the country.
If Toroman plans to bring in PBA reinforcements, he’s got to figure out whom to tap as soon as possible. Any PBA player lent to Gilas must be cleared by the PBA Board of Governors.
* * *
Meanwhile, the Asian Games organizing committee has set a deadline of July 30 – this Friday – for the country’s athletes by name. The early submission will allow the organizing committee to issue accreditation papers that may be used as visas. FIBA-Asia, which will supervise the basketball competitions in Guangzhou, requires the submission of rosters 60 days before the start of the Asian Games.
Douthit’s name is expected to be included in the 12-man lineup to beat the organizing committee’s deadline but if his naturalization papers are not processed in time, he’ll be scratched out eventually. Players may be substituted up to the day before the start of hostilities during the team managers’ meeting but latecomers are required to secure visas and accreditation in that order.
Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes, Sol Mercado, Sonny Thoss and Asi Taulava are the PBA players often mentioned as possible recruits for Gilas. It’s not certain if the mother clubs of Mercado, Thoss and Taulava will allow their participation even if the PBA Board clears the request. Williams and Reyes shouldn’t find it difficult to get permission from Talk ‘N’ Text owner Manny Pangilinan who is also SBP president and Gilas’ primary patron. But Reyes may not be available for Guangzhou as his wife is scheduled to give birth in November.
Not only must Toroman face up to the pressure of delivering the goods but he also has to wrestle with problems like Aguilar’s slow development, readjusting plays to improve chemistry and dealing with internal political issues. But if there’s anyone who can bring Gilas all the way home, it’s Toroman. He’s the man with the golden touch that took Iran to the Beijing Olympics and the vision to restore Philippine supremacy in Asian basketball.

pba should be supportive just for important tournaments like asian games and fiba asia olympic qualifier because they represent the whole basketball loving country of ours.....its a shame pba has size, heft, experience and skills to beat any team in asia only have they used similar to toroman's system before they could have done well
But if there’s anyone who can bring Gilas all the way home, it’s Toroman.
REALLY???
Malabo pa rin so far it's all about plan just the same. Action remains to be seen.
To SBP: Make your request official with the PBA board so that it will be known if the plan is possible or not.
Go Coach T.
Sana may incentive yong PBA team na nag loan ng player/s for the national cause by way of DRAFT picks to be raffled off by the donor teams.
hindi para sa atin ang larong basketball.even in asia, the dream of regaining our past glory is now a gargantuan task because of the emergence and improvement of the arab countries.mas matatangkad ang lahi ng mga ito at malayong mas mayaman ang mga ito para suportahan ang programa nila sa basketball.
pinoy as a basketball power in asia is already a myth in the past.we must divert our attention to other sports that we can have a strong chance of winning that elusive gold medal in the olympics.
correct ka dyan mr. henson. pba should lend any player that toroman requests.instead of being apprehensive that lending pba players will result in diminishing gate receipts, the pba should realize that it is the other way around. fielding a lousy national team will ultimately put the blame on the pba because it will be seen as a league that prevents players from playing for flag and country. on the other hand a national team that we could all be proud of will surely put the pba in a good light. It will all the more create interest in Philippine Basketball in general with the PBA being the number one beneficiary, financially speaking.
Well said "The Dean" Quinito Henson. Siguro dapat ikaw na kumausap sa board of governors s PBA para pahiram nila ilang players, malamang makinig sila sayo. nway, with or without the help of PBA. tuloy p din ang laban, i know gaano kalaki pressure s inyo n manalo.. kyo b naman mag represent ng isang bansa n lokong-loko s basketball, eh talagang mahihirapan ka. parang brazil yan n lagi sunusubaybayan ang football games nila.
To Gilas players.
Wag mawalan ng pag asa, wag rin kayo ma-intimidate s mga PBA players, remember, skills can win a game but determination and a fighting heart can lead to championship. Un ang lamang nyo sa dating Team Pilipinas.. determination and a fighting Heart.
Secure one slot for RayRay Parks while he's young and willing to don the national colors. Release Barocca if he wants to join the PBA draft.
well said mr quinito!even seldom writing an article about gilas.it shows that you follow gilas too.hope you do it more now.and make some waves and noise for the pba family to help and cooperate and join forces.MABUHAY PILIPINAS NATING SINILANGAN!!!!
thnks coach toroman khit ur not a filipino ur willing to help unlike pba sobra madamot sana ma karma kayo sa mga pinaggagawa ninyo!
kailan ba matatapos itong usapin na ito???? palagi na lng ba natin pag uusapan ang PBA players additional? wala naman results.. puro plano. dapat gawin na. kunin na ang mga player na gusto kunin. pero i notice it's all base from intervies and opinions. wala naman hakbang na nagagawa.
politics and business in philippine basketball. yan ang sagabal.
in my honest opinion???? i prefer recruiting amateur players from college with the needed heights and train them. they might not be good now but after 2 yrs or more the will be good. d ba un naman ang objective nyo. a long term plan.
Its ok to have some reinforcement from PBA (TNT) players sana noon pa to be more competitive. Anong status ni Stanley Pringle kaya? Gilas needs tall point guard.
coach toroman must submit a pool of players to the PBA and so as to ensure availability of talent for the Smart Gilas National team. this will also allow the PBA teams to prepare for the eventual absence of thier players. the PBA board of governors must also realized that the players of Smart Gilas will eventually graduate to the PBA. i hope they see that what the players are doing is honing thier skills in preparation to their PBA stint. I also hope that the UAAP and NCAA help in searching for possible future naturalized players by offering scholarships to foreign players 7 foot and above. a successful stint in the UAAP and NCAA may lead to the naturalization problems that smart gilas encountered. I hope the right people will read my comments.
coach T. is a brilliant man of basketball he knows best

As what the song says: "I did my best but my best wasn't good enough...."
Its too late in the ballgame to switch, fire or allow any major hiccup to disrupt the development of these young guns.
And coach Toroman better be able to realize where he has come up short and hopefully the players mature enough in time to challenge for the big prize.
sol mercado??? seryoso ba yan??? he's a choker!
therefore, the only way to make it possible is to give full support to toromoan
NAAWA AKO KAY COACH TOROMAN ANG HIRAP NIYA MATAMO ANG MGA CHOICE NIYANG PLAYERS PARA SA NATIONAL TEAM.
PILIPINO NA NGA KAYO (PBA MANAGEMENT AND PLAYERS)BAKIT KAILANGAN PA NINYO PAHIRAPAN ANG ATING NATIONAL TEAM.
SAYANG NASA ATIN NA ANG MAHUSAY NA COACH PERO WALA NAMAN DEDICATION YUNG MGA DAPAT KAILANGAN PARA MAGSILBI SA ATING BANSA.
PILIPINAS KAILAN KA AANGAT AT RESPETOHIN NG BUONG MUNDO?
17 players are in the Gilas pool. almost half are always bech warmer..so what's the use for them when u don't use them?
wow...I love this article of Sir Quinito Henson...I think the players that we need for Gilas are:
ASI TAULAVA(6'9" 275 lbs)- back-up for Slaughter and Douthit...With extensive experience in international games.
JAY WASHINGTON(6'8" 235 lbs)- He has the potential for his size and versatility.I wonder how come the previous nationals teams did not include him.He can make 3's, perimeter shots, can rebound and play defense. He can even finish a fastbreak well...No question, he is a better option than Sonny Thoss who is a Center at 6'7"(very undersized).Thoss is not also a good perimeter shooter. His offensive threat is limited inside the paint. He can hardly defend the 7 footers of other asian teams like Haddadi.
SOL MERCADO (6'1" 180 lbs)- He would be a big help to Casio and Barroca for the point guard spot.He is a big pointguard in the Asian level. And we all know his size, versatility and aggresiveness, I think we should include him in Gilas. He is very good in attacking and penetrating the zone defense of the rival team which could eventually create offensive situations for the team.
Kelly Williams (6'7" 230 lbs.)
A definite shoo-in for Gilas. He had already proven his worth in the NT.He already had the experience to play in FIBA.
Optional:
Gabe Norwood (6'6" 190 lbs)
A very versatile player who can play the PG,SG,SF positions. With extensive FIBA experience.
dpat pti coach torotot plitan n rin..
iba tlga pg pusong pinoy...pra kasing hndi team PILIPINAS nah...puro fil am n nga ung players pti b nman b coach foregner p rin??hays...
wag na mag palusot may pa "less than 24hrs pa lumaban ulit"... talaga mahina pa kelangan ng bigmen na may silbi... kulang kulang nga yung mga tumalo sa inyo wala mga star player nila.. and si CHRIS TIU kelangan i give up yung spot niya... kapag malas ang shooting wala na silbi, natataranta kapag na trap na.. maliit siya and mabagal,,,

do you know you got some foreign blood in your veins? no offense but filipinos are made up of different bloods.. there is no such thing as pure filipino blood in DNA...
Anonymous // July 28, 2010 8:19 PM
there is no pure filipino's in the philippine team.. thats right... the same goes back then when we dominate the asian/word basketball.. what do you think about Loyzaga(spanish) , Jaworski( polish)
Tiu, Ababou is not pure filipino either but filipino blood flows in their veins.
Is Gilas on track at this point in time?
It does not make sense to rally support for a program that does not seem to be working.
The only logical step lies only in the hands of the movers within the team to put thier heads together and come up with a quick fix.
We can all contribute to the cause by keeping quiet and just hope for the best.
With the uncertainty of the participation of PBA players in the SmartGilas NT, a lot of questions are playing inside the head of the avid, basketball-crazy Pinoy: Is the PBA turning our present generation of basketball players into financial whizkids, pera-pera na lang devoid of patriotic fervor, playing among themselves in charade conferences?
With their talents and abilities in the game does any of these players harbor the dream of helping Pilipinas make an impact in the world stage? Excellence in the game cannot be measured by playing only among themselves.
Can this batch of FilAms w/c is infesting the PBA can help regain the lost glory or are their patriotism highly suspect?
The Phil. basketball glory of 1954 where we placed 4th in the World Championship is but just a distant, distant memory.
So, we die-hard, basketball-crazy Pinoys have to support what we have, come hell or high water.
SmartGilas dont loss faith!!
We are w/ you all the way!
Mabuhay!!!
CriztM.
Kahit walang PBA go! go!
Yan hirap sa atin may mga taong gagawa para bayan tulad ni Coach Toroman who is not Filipino is sacrifing ang fighting for the Filpino's pride.
Please post this:
If you sacrifice for the country you will become a hero, at kilalanin ka sa boung mundo, kung kilala ka na sa buong mundo pera dadaluy sayo heeheh.. ayos ba mga pre.. tumpak ang meaning noh hehehe.. if you become a hero you will remember forever... If you remember forever nasa libro at sa encyclopia na pangalan nyo. Intsik, Arabo.. bilib sayo.. at magiging fans nyo..Tumpak... heheh.. Yahooo.. temporary signing off.. more to come..

look at the stats....OUCH!ANG GALING NYO!
Patay kung patay mga bro!
Laban Smart Gilas!
To all PBA players who would refuse to play for Smart Gilas,YOU WILL SURELY REGRET IT!In case you don't know, the smart gilas will be a guest team in the ABA sometime next year as a preparation for the fiba qualifiers.THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO BE SCOUTED BY NBA SCOUTS!That is if you guys have a dream or maybe you are already satisfied by just playing among yourselves in the PBA where you "unconsciously" don't improve.Playing in fiba sanctioned events also gives you the chance to be scouted.Haha.What more if you qualify for the Olympics?May bonus pa,HNDI KYO MKKLIMUTAN NG MGA PINOY bsketbol fans dhil binalik nyo pinas s olympics after mor dan 30 years!
instead of Sol Mercado..Pick Gabe Norwood coz Norwood's position is really a Point Guard in the NCAA in the U.S. he has more height than Sol Mercado. a 6'6 PG is better than a 6'1. defense and offense wise.
nstead of Sol Mercado..Pick Gabe Norwood coz Norwood's position is really a Point Guard in the NCAA in the U.S. he has more height than Sol Mercado. a 6'6 PG is better than a 6'1. defense and offense wise.
Instead of Sonny Thoss who is slow on fastbreak which is in contrast with Smart Gilas Plays why not Pick JR Reyes instead of Sonny Thoss? JR Reyes can run faster than Sonny Thoss. JR Reyes is perfect with smart gilas along with Kelly William and Gabe Norwood Plus Gary David.. Choose the right player Please!!
correct me if im wrong mr.henson smart gilas is weak..
b4 the last jones cup nung powerade pa nakalaban nila ang iran nandun pa si hadadi then sa japan nandun naman ang takeuchi twins sa taiwan nandun pa yung 3 bigman nila and yung superstar nilang si tien lei ata yun sa lebanon nglalaro pa nun si khatib plus matt freije and shamala sa jordan complete line pa sila nun..
now smart gilas recent jones cup and mvp cup
natalo tayo sa iran w/o hadadi and yung ibang bigman pa nila..japan talo din tayo wala pa yung twins dun..sa lebanon wala pa si khatib and freije and shamala..sa jordan naman wala yung 3 bigman nila nung nglaro sila sa mvp cup..take note gilas with import pa tayo ah......
kaya i think weak ang gilas eh they need some big players to boost up.they need sol,r.reyes, baguio, yap, norwood, jdv, jwash, kwill, thoss and asi..retain baracael, lasssiter, greg plus douthit
a mix of slasher/shooter/defender
LeBroshade
One thing I can't understand, Middle east teams and east Asian team most of there players are professionals and still there Pro league allow these players(Fade El Khatib, Hamed Haddadi, Yi jian Lian, Mhady Kamrany, Rony Fahed, Jackson Vroman) to play for there National teams. And in our country they, "the PBA" won't allow the pro players to play for our National team. Won't even allow the SBP to borrow 2 0r 3 players. Show me the Logic?
PINAKA D BEST GAWIN.. LET US JUST UTILIZE THE ONES WE HAVE. ACTUALLY IT IS NOT SO BAD. JUST GIVE MORE TRAINING FOR AGUILAR AND SLAUGHTER. IBUKOD SILA SA SPECAIL TRAINING KUMUHA NG TUTORIAL INSTRUCTOR FOR A BIGMAN'S MOVE. AT SI BALLESTEROS HE IS STRONG AND ATHLETIC HE JUST NEED MORE PLAYING TIME. HE NEEDS TO IMPROVE ON PERIMETER AND LOW POST MOVES HE CAN PLAY POWER FORWARD WITH HIS HEIGHT. CASIO IS GOOD SA PG SI BAROCCA LNG MEJO DOUBTFUL AKO HE CAN BE REPLACED.SI ABABOU??? HE IS A SHOOTER HE JUST NEED MORE PLATYING TIME AND MORE DRIBBLING SKILLS AND MORE QUICKNESS. THESE GUYS STILL YOUNG AND CAN IMPROVE ON THE ROLE THEY MUST DO.
instead of asi why not samigue eman? bata pa sya kasi pag si asi medyo may edad na hindi na tatagal yan lalo na pag pinagpatuloy ang program pero pag si eman hanggang 2016 or so kaya pa nyan diba?
WTF pag nagkataon kulang ang center natin ow my gas sana makuha ung lima Kelly Williams, Ryan Reyes or DILLINGER, Sol Mercado, Sonny Thoss and Asi Taulava...

Defense is mandatory in international play. Adjustment to the system, willingness to submit to the team concept and never to individual play.
Bad habits will eventually manifests itself if faced with an equally talented opponent, that is why fundamentals and trust to your teammates is Toroman's cup of tea. Of course talent is essential, but always based on the team concept, otherwise the progam will fail.

TAMA YAN! NDI YAN NAIISIP NG MGA PLAYER SA PBA! SWAPANG KSI UN MGA YUN!
Holy crap the deadline list of possible players for the Asian games is this Friday July 30. With that in mind here is the list I recommend the SBP submit to the games committee. The final 12 to be chosen from this list of 20 players , will be submitted the day before the Asian games this Nov. (just 3 + months away)
1 Casio, Borroca , Ryan Reyes , Pringles
2 Tiu, Lutz, Ababou, Mercado
3 Baracel, Lassiter , dillinger
4 Aguilar , Williams, Ramos, Hussini
5 Doulthit , slaughers , Ballesteros, Asi, Thoss
Ok I will make it real simple for everyone to understand:
Willimas in: Guaranteed
Need for center : Doulthit ( if papers approved) or Asi or Thoss
Need for big PG: Ryan Reyes or Mercado or Pringles
Any questions ? tapos na ang usapan !
There is no panicking here, all part of the plan to make the team ready : simple di ba !

why get washington and kelly willimas to ave strong inside play and jr reyes those players have ability to attcak inside williams 6'7 washington 6'8 jr reyes 6'8 and include norwood 6'5 and fajardo 6'10 and emaN FOR DEFENSE PORPOSE 6'10
puro kayo jay R reyes at washington, sentro nga kailangan natin!...mga utak lamok talaga...anu gagawin nitong dalawa mascot.. washington na mainitin ang ulo at 3 points lang alam, kailangan natin rebounder!..
jay washington?napapanood mu ba laro nya puro turnover every game more than 3 turn overs nasagot n b tanong mu?
did u know that coach toroman always watch pba games and even observe those players.so he already know what he needs to upgrade his lineups.smart gilas dont need a scorer in 3 or 4 position they need someone who can rebound and defend as a monster got guys?so nasAgot na mga tanong nyo bkit c jay wash hontiveros alapag jr reyes etc. hindi nasama sa wishlist nya o nabangit man lng nya.
wow...I love this article of Sir Quinito Henson...I think the players that we need for Gilas are:
With extensive FIBA experience.
hi guys..
latest update..
SMART GILAS PILIPINAS withdraw from FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup 2010...
DAPAT MAGKASUNDO SILA MAGPAPAHIRAM ANG PBA NG PLAYERS SA SMART GILAS PERO NEXT YEAR PBA NAMAN ANG BUBUO NA NATIONAL TEAM AT SILA NAMAN ANG HIHIRAM SA SMART GILAS,..DOUGHIT,AGUILAR,LASITTER,SLAUGHTER..etc..
Someone should show Barroca, Casio, Tiu, Jazul, Lassiter, Lutz, Ababou and Baracael na hindi sila dapat matakot mag-penetrate and slash thru the defenses... and Sol Mercado is the one who will show the way. :)

This smart gilas team is very far for qualifying in olympic. This team lacks flexibility. We cant match up team with size and team with quickness. I think william and reyes is a good choice. But we need a slasher who attack the basket, not just relying on our outside shooting. I think norwood is highly nominated to make it to the team. Because he can play multiple position such as point guard, and a good defender too.
best sg that should be reinserted in gilas if they need to upgrade:
1. james yap: 6'3 king james has so many moves and great perimeter shooting and is still young.
2. dillinger: 6'5 is his actual height when entered pba including his resume of good perimeter shooting percentage and a hard nose defender. called the daredevil bcoz he doesnt fear slashing to the basket against tall known defenders. already known by international scout that he may spell danger to their team bcoz of hi caliber. i will feel sorry to our national team if he cant be included.
3. ray parks: not yet in best shape to be in gilas but at his aged he is far more better than those alrady included. toroman could reinsrt him now to gain experience and later be a major factor in international competition.
4. arwind santos: tall lanky 6'4 g/f who is tough on defense. called the spiderman for his long stretch arms can help at forward spot for extra intimidation but we have seen him having hard time against wide banging bodies. i think he should reassert himself in shooting guard bcoz of his good spot up fade away jumper. need to be quick on his feet though bcoz at sg he needs to keep up with them. not known to be a slasher but he might be a good dondon hontiveros type of player minus the slashing ability.
-----------------------------------------------
we have so many guard that might be far better than these 4 but these 4 are young tall and capable players who could develop with the young gilas team.

best sf and pf or even center that should be reinserted in gilas if they need to upgrade:
1. kwill: 6'6 he is the solid material we could place in sf to pf spot. all around player! at sta lucia he is good at sf spot bcoz he is not known for his post up move and he is not that wide to bang up but developed a lot of moves to slash and has good perimeter shooting. if the opposing team using a quick lineup then he could slide down to pf.
2.jwash: 6'8 everyone agrees he should be included bcoz of his ht athletic and perimeter shooting abilities. have put some bulk to his frame and may be the pf that toroman can put against wide banging pf. can slide down to sf or even center and is best used to stretch the defense of opponent bcoz of his 3ptshooting.
3. junmar fajardo: 6'9 quick for his size and still young that can develop with the team. has good potnetial.
4. christian stanhardinger: 6'8 still in college known for his rebounding and toughness but we might as well get thoss instead of him bcoz he already played for germany but a good addition at pf though if we could acquire him.
5. gian chu: 6'9 maybe a lot more quicker now than when he was still with ateneo. improve vastly in skils but prioritize studies for now.
6. sonny thoss: maybe hard to acquire but he is a solid pf no doubt about it.
7.joe devance: 6'7 great perimeter shooting and wide body with quickness. he can suit up well with gilas for these assets even though his ost up moves still need to improve.
8.azi taulava. 6'9 the only center that could be a major factor right now on that spot bcoz of his size and vast experience. others are just multi position player that could fill up the center spot when needed but this guy is the only center you might think of the best center to put on the gilas. 2 more yrs left if he joined gilas. if they can not get him as center then slaughters is enough

cousins is part filipino but theres no chance he and robinson can be in the lineup except if we can qualify to olympics.

Dear Filipino Basketball Fans,
We are crazy about basketball in the Philippines and it is very difficult to see our teams lose in international competitions, especially when at one time, we had our glory years. Time and again, we always come up with all kinds of excuses for these failures – inept officiating, players sent were not the best, not enough time to prepare, questionable or ineligible imports of opposing teams, use of a Filipino coach, use of a non-Filipino coach, a player playing a different position, players not giving their 100% to protect themselves from injury, non-support from the government and the private sector, unfamiliarity with FIBA rules – the list goes on and on. Is it possible that there are other factors that led to the decline of Philippine basketball? The answer is yes, and it is painfully true. Let’s face it, compared with basketball-fielding countries, we are short, and that is a fact. Our tallest players don’t move as quick as other foreign basketball players. We are not naturally athletic especially in basketball – it is in the genes. In the mid-70s, there was a team of NBA players who came on a goodwill visit to the Philippines . Asked by a reporter how they think of their Filipino counterparts, probably to elicit praise for them, an American player said that “A good tall team will always beat a good small team”. Yes, we did win some Asian championships in the 50s, 60s and early 70s but it is a myth that we were the dominant team. Our last Asian Games gold medal was won in 1954! Of course, we placed 3rd in the 1954 World Championship in Brazil . Presently we can only dominate our Southeast Asian neighbors. We have been left behind by the rest of the world in basketball talent.
What is my point here? Filipino basketball fans should not be delusional in expecting to win in international tournaments outside of Southeast Asia . They should just enjoy the game, watch if they can pick up ideas on how to improve the state of Philippine basketball. Don’t be dreaming about qualifying for the Olympics or World Basketball, it’s pure fantasy. Strive to stay as the best in Southeast Asia, and aim to improve its ranking in Asia . Improve fundamental skills in the grassroots level where shooting is emphasized, and playing defense and ball handling are not as important. I’m sure that a lot of people will criticize these observations as ‘crab mentality’’. If that is the case, so be it.

"BOY HINDI MASAMANG MANGARAP and mahirap kapag SUMUKO KA NALANG... "
You can dream forever but you will be disappointed. You don't have to give up, but it is an exercise in futility. Maybe in a hundred years, Filipinos will grow to be 7-footers! You won't be around to cheer for your team.
