Iran bows to Slovenia; Australia down China in Continental Cup international tournament

LIZHOU, China - Guard Mahdi Kamrani was efficient as ever and center Asghar Kardoust displayed some delightful form early on, but those proved insufficient for FIBA Asia champions Iran in the opening game of the Continental Cup international tournament against Slovenia on Thursday.

Slovenia won over Iran NT, 107-74.

In another game, China too commanded the game, but allowed Australia to fight back in the fourth quarter and get away with a 64-63 win.

Kardoust scored the first five points of the game and Iran were off to a 14-4 lead early in the game against the Eurobasket 2009 semifinalists, but Slovenia hit slowly and steadily.

Sani Becirovic, son of Slovenia’s coach Memi Becirovic, made his father proud with a game-high 23-point haul.

Phoenix Sun guard Goran Dragic who made the Slovenian roster just in the nick of time for the competition added 15 points, and Primo Brezec had 13.

Iran, playing without Hamed Haddadi who is yet to join the team from the NBA Summer League, were hard-pressed against the sustained pressure from a much taller opposition and had to bow down.

Kamrani scored 22 points to keep Iran afloat.

China began with caution against Australia, and trailed 16-17 at the end of the first quarter. But a scoring advantage of 21-11 in the second quarter took China to a 37-28 lead going into the changing rooms.

That advantage proved a flash in the pan as Australia led by Patty Mills’ 13 points and Matt Nielsen’s dozen clawed their way back to cut the lead down to six points at the end of the third quarter (44-50) and went on to win 64-63.

With the score 62-63, and only seconds left in the game, Mills drove and set up David Andersen to complete a lay-up, which took Australia to victory.

China’s NBA star Yi Jianlian, playing for the National Team for the first time this year, led the game for scoring with 17 points.

The 23-year-old power forward who was traded by New Jersey Nets to Washington Wizards for the NBA 2010 season also collected 10 rebounds.

Seasoned campaigner Wang Zhizhi had 12 points and Liu Wei 11, but China’s poor free-throw conversion rate let them down.

China converted only 10 of their 23 attempts from the foul-line.

All the four teams are using the tournament to prepare for the 2010 FIBA World Championship to be played in Turkey from Aug 28-Sept 12.

Iran, who won the FIBA Asia Championship last year and Slovenia, who were pipped to the bronze medal by Greece in the Eurobasket 2009 are drawn together in Group ‘B’ of the Preliminary Round at Turkey.

China, who lost to Iran in the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship gold medal game, are drawn in Group C and FIBA Oceania champions Australia in Group A.

THESE GAME RESULTS SHOULD PROMPT AND MOTIVATE THE PBA OFFICIALS TO LEND THEIR PLAYERS NO IF'S AND BUT'S , BECAUSE WITH COACH T AT HELM WE CAN COMPETE WITH THIS TEAMS. THAT'A WHAT I STRONGLY BELIEVE!!!

    QATAR BASKETBALL

  17. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 1:07 AM

Gets???

  18. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 1:15 AM

lets change our national pastime where height doesnt matter at all!!!

  19. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 1:36 AM

AS A BASKETBALL LOVING NATION, IT JUST MAKES YOU SICK TO THINK THAT YOU ARE NOT SENDING YOUR BEST PLAYERS TO COMPETE.. TOO MUCH POLITICS.. I BELIEVE THAT THIS SHOULD BE THE LAST AND PROPER TIME FOR THE PBA TO TRY AND LEND THEIR PLAYERS PRIMARILY BECAUSE COACH TOROMAN IS A PROVEN WINNER, HIS RECORD AND SYSTEM SPEAKS FOR ITSELF AND SECOND WE CAN MATCH UP WITH THESE TEAMS (EXCEPT FOR THE CENTER SLOT)FOR WE HAVE THE MOST NUMBER OF NCAA CALIBER PLAYERS THAN ANYONE IN ASIA. IF THE RESULT WILL BE UN DESIRABLE THEN THATS THE TIME THE PBA SHOULD STOP LENDING IT'S PLAYERS!! IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO SAVE AN AGING AND BORING LEAUGE!! ANG DAMING ARTE!! KAYO KAYO NA LANG SA SAN MIGUEL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION NAGLOLOKOHAN, PATI MGA TAO NILOLOKO NYO SA GAME RESULTS..

fact is, gilas are they are now with its composition has, sorry to say , no chance ano man bilog ng bola. why? Una undersized tau, pangalawa we lack a consistent outside shooter, pangatlo the best players are not in the national team. Im not saying get them all pero atleast get 5 of top players for each position then yung iba developmental players.

Try to look at the positive side nungsumali tayo sa tune up games sa europe alam natin na kaya natin makipagsabayan. Kailangan lang consistent and intact ang team. Since yung mga kalaban ilang years nila binuo ang team samantalang tayo mag 2 years pa lang. hehe

  28. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 8:46 AM

kung may mas nasasaktan na inde tayo manalo nalo yun ay ang mga player mismo.. kaya wag natin sisihin mga player.. its not a joke sa pakiramdam kung natatlo sila sa ballgame..

  33. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 9:37 AM

Southeast asian tayo. Lets admit it.

hehe DI SIGURU TAYO MATATALO NG INDONESIA O THAILAND SA BASKETBALL...KAHIT COLLEGE TEAM NATIN ILABAN SA KANILA TAMBAK SILA..E PBA PAKAYA..KYA NGA SA TIN SILA KUMUKUHA NG IMPORT..

  39. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 5:43 PM

pacquiao is not a miracle. in fact there are a lot of athletically gifted people in the philippines. but these dont come out.'cos most of them are poor and cannot afford college. most of the players in filipino basketball will be taken out from college. i know a guy in the bario who is 210 cm who can dunk like kevin garnett in tsinelas and can run 100m dash in under 6 sec.. cannot get enough exposure because of this background. he has no schooling.

  40. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 8:42 PM

asia is only alloted 1 spot for the olympics... remember in 2008 china was the host nation thats why asia got 2 slots in the olympics.. In 2012 london games only 1 asian team will make the olympic basketball tournament....

Puro nalang ba Pacquaio! Pacquiao!

Search for tall and have potential persons.

Tsktsk me 7"4 pala tayo na collegiate player noong 90's ni wala man lang nagtyaga to train man lang.Kaya hinayaan nalang. Yan sakit satin kahit sa paghahanap ng trabaho gusto agad experto at experienced.TAMAD ANG IBA NA MAG TRAIN NG TAO! Walang BOBO SA MUNDO KUNG PAGSUSUMIKAPIN NA I TRAINING..
