Gilas 5 ends Jones Cup bid with loss to Lebanon

Smart Gilas-Pilipinas squandered a 15-point third quarter lead to end its 32nd William Jones Cup bid with a 73-62 defeat to Lebanon on Tuesday at the Hsinchuang gymnasium in Hsincuang City, Taipei County.

Gilas enjoyed a 50-35 spread in the third quarter but failed to sustain its momentum against a barrage of three-pointers unleashed by the Lebanese.

Ghaleb Reda fired consecutive three-pointers to highlight the FIBA World Basketball Championship bound Lebanese squad’s 14-2 run that cut the deficit to three entering the pivotal fourth period.

Elie Estephan buried five three-pointers in the final quarter, the last of which gave Lebanon a 66-60 edge with three minutes and 20 seconds left in the game.

"Their three-point shots killed us," said Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman. "We played a good game in the first three quarters, but in the end, we didn’t control the rebounds. We couldn’t manage the rebounds. We had lots of opportunities to execute."

The Lebanese posted a 44-27 edge in rebounds.

The RP Team hopefuls finished fourth with an even 3-3 card since Japan is assured of the third spot regardless of the outcome of its game against the Taipei University All-Star due to the win-over-the-other rule. Japan defeated the Philippines, 84-74, on Monday.

Placing fourth improved the Philippines’ sixth place finish achieved by Powerade-Team Pilipinas in this same tournament last year.

The Toroman-mentored Gilas crew posted wins against Taipei University All-Star (83-52), Australian Townville Crocs (90-64) and Chinese Taipei (96-93, overtime).

Their losses came at the expense of defending champion Iran (68-61), Japan and Lebanon.

"We know that we are weak at positions four and five and we want to fix the problem," Toroman said, insisting that adding Talk ‘N Text forward Kelly Williams to Gilas’ lineup would definitely boost the team’s frontline.

Mac Baracael led the Nationals with 20 points, including the three-pointer in the third period that gave them Gilas the 15-point edge.

Chris Tiu added 13, while American import Marcus Douthit struggled against the tall Lebanese frontline and was held to only six points and 13 rebounds.

Estephan finished with 17 points, while one-time NBA player Jackson Vroman contributed 16 for the Lebanon (5-1), which placed second behind Iran (6-0). – JVP, GMANews.TV

Scores:

Lebanon 73 – Estephan 17, Vroman 16, Reda 11, Nour 10, Pharis 7, Mahmoud 4, Fahed 3, Kanaan 3, Rustom 2, Samaha 0, Akl 0, Fakhreddine 0.

Smart-Gilas 62 – Baracael 20, Tiu 13, Casio 9, Lassiter 7, Douthit 6, Lutz 3, Aguilar 2, Slaughter 2, Barroca 0.

Quarter scores: 18-19, 25-37, 49-52, 73-62.

Kulang sa depth yung line-up. I believe that the best players are still in the PBA. Just like the past, although getting players for naturalization is not a bad "idea", pero mas maayong panoorin kung puro locals ang mga naglalaro.

if ryan reyes will not be available i suggest that we include sol mercado. however if stanley prngle is availble just like sir noli eala have told me that they were able to talk to stanley pringle and hopefully he will join next tournament.

  7. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 10:30 AM

Sol Mercado will be able to contain his counter part in other countries because he has big frame and has the speed plus with good perimeter shooting percentage and beyond the arc.

i think we should give last chance to lutz in the next tournament. norwood, mercado, williams, dillinger will be enough addition. i believe ballesteros and hussaini will be kept to have an impression that the team is small. it is a ploy so that the scouts will not focus on them.

I think we need Kelly Williams, another dominating and intimidating bigman(To help Douthit and Slaughter) and another point guard probably Jimmy Alapag or Chris Banchero.I think eto mga pwedeng idagdag sa Gilas na magpapalakas sa Gilas NT natin:

1.Another dominating Center/Power Forward- Slaughter and Douthit need help.We should be ready for the worse. What if our main bigmen got injured? We should have another bigman who could get the rebounds and can block shots. And someone who can score inside and who could score with a soft touch from the perimeter.
    -
2.Kelly Williams(6'7") with FIBA experience, aggressive in defense and offense..Versatile type of player. Can play SF and PF position

3.Gabe Norwood(6'6")-with FIBA experience, can play PG, SG, and SF... Another versatile type of player and with tremendous athleticism that could probably help us in getting more rebounds. Can play good defense.Would be a great help to complement the hardwork of Mac Baracael.

4.Jimmy Alapag(5'9")- experienced PG especially in international games. Showed his worth during the FIBA Asia 2007.I think he could counter the speed of Yuta Tabuse of Japan.Casio and Barroca are young, great pointguards but I think they also need someone in the team who is matured and experienced in international games. With his speed, Alapag can penetrate defenses and eventually make offensive situations for our team.

    5. CHRIS Banchero(6'1"/ 6'2")- reminds me of a young Jimmy Alapag but he is younger, stronger and taller..I saw him play in the US and if we could really have him on our team, that would really be an advantage for us..I hope we could get him soon.Pls SBP, do whatever it takes to get him for our team

PROS THAT SHOULD BE ADDED TO NT!
    kelly williams
    ranidel de ocampo
    gabe norwood

  16. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 11:59 AM

4 and 5 na yan. we are ok sa guards. si Baracael and Lassiter can play no. 2 and 3 spot. si Barocca ma error walang good decision making. si Casio pede depende sa kalaban. need isa point gurad na mas powerful at mas malaki pero mautak. maybe Sol Mercado. im not just sure sa playmaking ability pero he is a slasher pag kinakailangan.

  17. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 12:02 PM

a good power forward is needed. ok na tayo sa mga shooters. we need Ranidel de ocampo bata pa yan pede mag adjust sa system ni Coach.

    mac baraccael
    jv casio / jared dillinger

  22. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 1:10 PM

Kelly Williams is a welcome addition at the 4 position but let us also consider JARED DILLINGER as the other helpful addition at the 3 or 4 position. For now, JARED DILLINGER is the other player that could be easily recruited since he is from the Talk and Text squad and he could also be paired up with BARACAEL to boost the SMART GILAS offense and defense.

Since GABE NORWOOD(many fans like this guy to be on the team) is hard to get because he is from a different team, let us pressure the people in charge of the Smart Gilas Team and the PBa to let JARED DILLINGER be included in the GILAS line-up. KELLY WILLIAMS is a given but with DILLINGER as another reinforcement for the team it will be really be a big BOOST for everything for the team.

In conclusion, let KELLY play soon as well as JARED. Both of this kids have heart and skills along with their athleticism and hustle plays.

"Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday." ~ Wilma Rudolph

5.Maganda ang fundamentals ng gilas nt under the mentorship of coach toroman kaya cya ang naging personal handpick ni mvp because they have the same vision.Natuto ang mga batang player na always keep their feet in the ground pagnanaka-experience ng pagkatalo, magandang philosophy, work etiquette, and core values.

  24. Rosvin of Tanay // July 21, 2010 1:19 PM

GOOD LUCK GILAS on your next tournament, Coach Toroman admitted that our team is weak for positions #4 & #5, so its up for the management for Gilas to take the necessary adjustment before the next tournament if not on the ASIAN GAMES. If the coaching staff beleives that some members of the current line-up is not yet ready for ASIAN WARS ON THE COURT, why not replace them with the appropriate one who can help achieve the MISSION.. MY OPINION ONLY!!!!!!

  25. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 1:20 PM

At least nakakuha award si Marcus Douthit with a deserving best center award. Good job Marcus and to Smart Gilas boys...We will support you win or loss...We are proud of your hardworks, keep on improving.

    la ksi depensa.......
si baracael mka-score lang ng 2pts.....
    ttra na ng ttra.........
    defence wins ballgame....

  27. teenage igorot // July 21, 2010 1:27 PM

definitely, toroman was right that we are weak at the pf and center position but we also need taller and mobile guards to match our rivals.maybe we shld slide baracael to play the 2 position and hopefully norwood as pg.kelly and gabe will be a great addition to the team.right now, japeth and greg are both not yet ready to man their positions as they need to be toughen-up more physically but these guys have a lot of room for improvement.so the PBA,pls.help our national team!!!go gilas!!!

  28. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 1:32 PM

Offensively Tiu and Barocca are good but mismatches defensively Gilas is weak. These two guards I think should give way to big guards as a very simple solution to improve Gilas line up.

  29. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 1:43 PM

1.after Stankovic cup and the entry of meralco franchise to the pro-league.The PBA corp.have no choice but to lend k-will to the gilas-nt for Asian games.
2.The PBL has already fold-up na source ng future PBA superstars sana.binitawan pa ng media partner na abs-cbn for promotion sana ng liga eh due to low viewership, weak ang tv ratings, dwindling gate attendance, sponsorships and competition against collegiate leagues like uaap/ncaa.
Pero hindi mangyayari yan the PBA won't allow it dahil takot nila mawalan ng sponsorship from smart and PLDT group.
5.isa lang sure dyan k-will will suit-up for rp gilas for asian-games and fiba-asia olympic qualifying 2011.dapat ma-secure lng ang health condition nya.

  30. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 2:21 PM

K Wils alone may not enough what if he got injured hope will not happen. Maybe another one P.G. above 6' and one Center in case Douthit papers for naturalization is delayed.Go Gilas!!!

  31. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 2:49 PM

  32. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 2:51 PM

we need streak shooters like Chris Tiu. we can have bigger and more physical point guards. I still like Casio because mautak at may shooting. but depende sa situation so pag kelanagan na ang physical na laro. wala tayo ganyan. kelangan ang barumbado mag laro like Sol Mercado. you see there is a psychological ingredient sa Asian competition... mga arab countries they play rugged and physical at doon tayo talo lalo na pag napipikon na ang pinoy. we r sentimental and emotional pple. kita mo sa laro against lebanon. strategy na nila ang i physical tayo then tapos sira na ang laro natin. nung laro din sa Taiwan. physical at rugged. muntik tayo natalo. we need guys that are rugged players sa point guard at isang power forward na rugged. Si Ranidel pede.

ATTENTION MVP, SBP AND PBA :

ANO UUPO NA LANG BA TAYO HINDA NA GAGAWA NG PARAAN PARA MAISAMA NA SILA K WILLIAMS, GABE NORWOOD AT DELLIGER SA SMART GILAS TEAM.

TULONGAN NYO NAMAN SI COACH TOROMAN SA KANYANG TEAM PARA NAMAN SA ATING BANSA ITO!

KELAN NATIN MAIBALIK ANG GLORY DAYS NG PHILIPPINES? PALAGAY KO MALABO NA.

KAYO MVP, SBP AT PBA ANG AMING PAG-ASA AT ATING MAHAL NA BAYAN!

  34. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 3:08 PM

sayang si giles he could be a strong and athletic in center position... add reyes and alapag for point. norwood, williams and ranidel could be good for 4-5 position..

  35. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 3:11 PM

Gilas lack of chemistry and killer instinct..

  36. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 3:31 PM

We need a taller point guard and a better shooting guard. Casio, Baroca & Tiu must be
replaced by PBA players like J. Yap, Norwood and Jimmy Alapag.

  37. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 3:48 PM

I believe Toroman will not yet push the panic button because he knew that his ultimate goal is the Fiba Asia Olympic slot, I believe this problem can be fixed sooner on which spot we are weaker, please just be patient, what we must do right now is to trust the wisdom of Coach Toroman and the entire management of Smart Gilas,if we thought like these for the betterment of Smart Gilas team how much more the entire gilas who are in the recieving end.

I believe Toroman is making a gauge on his opponents come the real tournament.

    Just be patient!!!

  38. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 3:49 PM

Barocca and Tiu were never been natural point guards, both played off guards in the UAAP. Ok na sila sa Gilas PG pos offensively because of their seniority in learning Toroman's system.

The sad part of it even if both improve tremendously, they are still the weak part of SG because of their size. Defensively, as manifested in the Lebanon- Gilas game, the opposing big guards outplayed them.

The problem of gilas is very simple and by fielding big PGs Gilas would solve the mismatches.

Remember PGs are the court generals and/or playmakers of the the team. Therefore all the basic qualities of the PGs should be in place.

Tiu and Barocca should stay with Gilas and would be of great help transferring the system's knowledge in the training of the big PGs.

I supposed most of the critics who viewed and commented shared the same observations. We do hope the coaching staffs know better.

  39. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 4:08 PM

  41. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 4:35 PM

3-5 n pba player ok n u! ung idag2 ntin sa gilas ok n ok un.

  42. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 4:57 PM

  43. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 5:19 PM

Tiu and Barocca are the solution to Gilas problem by just being in the reserves. They can help train the big PGs to learn the offensive patterns by actual drill and demo.

  45. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 5:29 PM

Ranidel, Alapag, and Dillinger (TNT)should secretly be encouraged to train and familiarize with the Gilas system by giving them incentives and perks. Then by just asking the permission of the PBA they'll be ready reinforcement when the need arises.

  46. Anonymous // July 21, 2010 5:35 PM

    ito ang dream lineup:
    C=Douthit 6'11"
C= Slaughter 7'0"( More muscles and quickness)
    C= Taulava (reserve center) 6'9"
F= Aguilar 6'9" (need more muscles)
    SF= Williams 6'7" ( all around )
F= Ballesteros 6'8" (needs to improve on perimeter shooting)
    F= R. de Ocampo 6'7" ( low post move)
    SG= Baracael 6'5" (pure shooting)
PG= Lassiter 6'3" (to train now)
    PG= Norwood 6'6"
    SG= Dillinger 6'5"
SG= Ababou 6'5" (need to practice more shooting sya kukuha sa spot ni Tiu)

    reserve:

    SG=Lutz 6'4"
    PG=Mercado 6'2"

  47. lklm // July 21, 2010 5:38 PM

    Here's why:

    Mainstays:
Aguilar, Japeth (F, 6’10, 230) – he needs to man up and use his full potential. For his sheer size, talent and athleticism, he gets a nod in coach T’s final 12.

Ballesteros, Jason (F/C, 6’8, 215) - he was a revelation in the Gilas’ stint in Dubai last January where he played beyond everybody’s expectations, and showed signs of improved defense in the latest Jones Cup.

Baracael, Mac (F/G, 6’5, 184) – it’s unfair for Baracael to play the 4 position considering his size. He is an underrated shooter. The 2 or 3 spot best suites him.

Casio, J. V. (G, 6’’0, 175) – he is by far the most consistent and clutch playmaker for Gilas. He should keep that role, either as a starter or a back-up.

Douthit, Marcus (F/C, 6’11, 233) – he is the ONE for Gilas. Though it would have been best if he was 3 years younger and 2 inches taller.

Lassiter, Marcio (G, 6’3, 190) – we now have a stopper for Rasheim Wright. Hopefully he could be our Raja Bell or Bruce Bowen for the top 2 guards of the other teams.

Slaughter, Greg (C, 7’0, 250) – though not dominant as we wish him to be, his length is what we need. He just needs more seasoning and hopefully, he could develop his strength and athleticism just a little more.

    Add-ons:
Dillinger, Jared (G/F, 6’5, 220) – he can play the 1, 2, and 3 spot. He can slash, which we lacked in the recent Jones Cup, he is a perimeter defender, and he has played in past national team.

Eman, Samigue (C, 6’9, 239) – if we can develop Slaughter, why can’t we develop Eman? He’s not getting any playing time from Alaska anyways.

Norwood, Gabe (G/F, 6’6, 210) – much like Dillinger but more athletic in more ways than one.

Reyes, Ryan (G, 6’2, 190) – to this day, I believe Reyes is the best defensive point guard in the land. Quick hands that translate to steals, ideal size for a playmaker, and a slasher. Far better than Barroca, definitely.

Williams, Kelly (F, 6’7, 220) – he is in coach T’s wishlist, he is a PBA MVP, and a former national team player.

    Reserves:
Reyes, Jay-R (C, 6’8, 225) – he can shoot the 3,and he’s pretty mobile compared to most big men.

Lutz, Chris (G, 6’4, 190) – he is a shooter but so far, he has not shown consistency. But it’s too early to tell as he has played in 2 tournaments so far for Gilas.

Washington, Jay (F, 6’8, 220) – we need big men who could shoot the 3 just like Jackson Vroman, Zaid Abbas or Samad Nikkah Bahrami.

    just my two cents

suggest ko lang kailangan talaga ng defensive mind player ng Gilas yung kayang makipag sabayan sa malalaki ng ibang country....marami na silang scorer why not like phil jackson style of basketball put a defensive player.... If the smart gilas teams will not change the style of basketball same result like jones cup... But still belive in smart gilas team

    here's why:

Lutz, Chris G, 6’4, 190) – he is a shooter but so far, he has not shown consistency.

  51. lklm // July 21, 2010 6:15 PM

    and lastly...

6’0 guard Chris Tiu of Ateneo, 5’10 guard Andy Barroca of FEU, 5’11 guard RJ Jazul of Letran, 6’3 guard Rey Guevarra of Letran, 6’2” guard Chris Banchero of Seattle Pacific University, 6’4 forward Dylan Ababou of UST, 6’5 forward JR Cawaling of FEU, 6’7 forward Aldrech Ramos of FEU, 6'6 forward Sean Anthony of McGill, 6’8 center Magi Sison of UP, , 6’8 center Rabeh Al-Hussaini of Ateneo, 6'11" center Gian Chiu of Oberlin, 6’9” center Junmar Fajardo of University of the Visayas should make up Pool B of Smart Gilas. Coach Rajko would then have the luxury of picking a player from Pool B should any player from Pool A get injured or released again to their PBA mother clubs.

Again, just my two cents. All these players are good in their own way, don't get me wrong. But if we should consider what we saw in the recent Dubai Invitational, the Champions Cup, and the recently concluded Jones Cup, we really need size and length. With the lineup mentioned above, 6'6 average height for Gilas is fair enough. If only all basketball shareholders, including PBA ball clubs and its management, could join in this effort, setting aside egos and self-interest, we should stack our lineup now. Try them in the Stankovic Cup, and other planned tournaments prior to the Asian Games and FIBA-Asia championship. Thanks teampilipinas.info for the space. just my two cents, y'all..

I agree with your line up except for samigue eman. I wud prefer asi taulava or mick penissi for the reason that they have the experience, veteran leadership, and of course they are used to play the fiba rules.... and familiar with the players of other countries

I agree to those who commented that tiu and barroca should give way to other big PGs, if they really want to help the team. Me, too also noticed these mismatches. it's true that they are good players but the other teams have also good players that are taller and faster than them. They have shown their skills, they played long all throughout the tournament but still it is not enough. PGs are the coaches inside the court if they cannot rotate the ball and decide well because they are being harrassed by taller PGs how they can create a good result? In my opinion, leave casio on the line up and get an experienced, good and taller PG.

Well said. Gilas can now slide other players in their respective positions. Lutz and Ababbou will now be a SG rather than PF, Lassiter can be a PG or SG. Baracael with K will IN can now be a SF.

I know Ballesteros, Aguilar and K Will are meant to be PF. Centers would be Douthit, Slaughter and Al Hussaini. Hopefully Norwood or another big PG will be taken to complete the line up with Casio as the mainstay PG.

  60. Anonymous // July 22, 2010 3:58 AM

TAKE NOTE SA MGA WALANG ALAM... KAPAG ANG HEIGHT MO SA PBA 6'6 TAPOS FORWARD OR CENTRO ANG POSITION, PUNGGOK KA LANG YAN SA INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION... KASE BAKA PG OR SHOOTING GUARD LANG NILA ANG 6'6... ANG AVERAGE HEIGHT DUN NG FORWARD OR CENTER 6'9 PATAAS NA MABIBILIS..

  61. Anonymous // July 22, 2010 2:56 PM
