Chris Tiu: My thoughts on Jones Cup 2010 in Taipei

7/30/2010 | , , | 48 comments »

by Chris Tiu | chris-tiu.blogspot.com

I just want to take this opportunity to thank all those who greeted me for my birthday either through this blog or through my twitter.

I was in Taipei over my birthday for the Jones Cup for almost two weeks and did not have internet access there. Actually, we did have internet, just felt that $10 USD per 24 hours of use was not worth it.

To those who are not updated, Smart Gilas-Team Pilipinas finished 4th place in the Jones Cup behind Iran, Lebanon & Japan. We placed higher than Chinese Taipei, Chinese Taipei team B and Australian Crocs team.

I felt we could have finished 2nd or 3rd but had a disastrous game against Japan, who played with former Phoenix Suns point guard Tabuse. They scouted us well and fatigue kicked in. We also weren't able to adjust to their defense and intensity right away. Although I am personally disappointed with our result, and i'm sure quite a number of Filipinos feel the same way, i felt we showed that we could compete against the powerhouses of Asia particularly Iran and Lebanon.

The Iranian national team played without Hedadi and Afagh but their superstar Samad Nikkah Bahrami took over w/ 27 pts, 8 rebs and 8 assts. The Lebanon national team was complete (plus naturalized Jackson Vroman) and had a very balanced lineup, except for Fadi El Khatib, who said himself that he will not play for the national team. We were up by as much as 15 points until their shooters started to get hot.

Overall, i believe the Jones Cup was a very fruitful experience for both coaches and players and it allowed us to gauge our level and the standards of the opposing teams. For now, we just have to continue to work extremely hard (and smart), gain more experience (through competitions) and plug the holes in the lineup that will best suit coach Rajko's system.

Thanks again to all those who've been supporting us, through both rainy days and sunny days! And please continue to pray for the team (the players, coaches, management, etc.) for strength, wisdom, courage, inspiration and a little luck! So that we may rightfully represent our beloved flag and make each Filipino proud to be Filipino through our performance on the court and even our behavior off the court. I know its a long shot, but someone's gotta believe.... and try!

Chris

P.S. Still no word if we're participating in the Stankovic Cup this August 7 in Beirut, Lebanon. Greg Slaughter and Rabeh Al Hussaini can't afford to miss class, while Chris Lutz and Marcus Douthit still don't have Filipino passports. Still weighing the sanctions if we back out. FYI, we are in the same bracket with Lebanon, Qatar, Jordan and Syria! Other bracket is Iran, Iraq, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan. How lucky can we get.

    goodluck RP TEAM!!

  3. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 10:47 AM

i believe this team has 19 players. i think they can still participate, height will be an issue though. Our big men cant play. we're down to only 2 bigmen, Ballesteros and Aguilar. In that case, its either tap somebody from the PBL such aS James Sena to fill in or just to back out. but ofcourse backing out is not an option. This is for flag and country..

  4. Paul // July 30, 2010 10:48 AM

@Chris Chiu: Kaw ang team captain.. you should encourage your teammates... give them "Hope" and "Will" to pursue kung ano sinimulan nyo... pati ung co-team captain mo.. gusto n rin umalis... di lang pwede kc may kontrata sa Gilas... Ano ba yan... Pull your team together!!!

  6. Vincent // July 30, 2010 10:50 AM

Why don't you go get the best pinoy players like James Yap and Arwind Santos..? I know it's not that easy, but as far as I'm concerned, these 2 can easily adapt to any playing style... (opinion ko lng po)

  7. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 11:36 AM

    Good luck.. enjoy lang!!

  8. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 11:40 AM

Chris tiu, alam mo badtrip ako sau kc ang sama ng laro mo s jones cup, ikaw ang nagpatalo s team, but infairness sau pinakita mo naman lumalaban ka and your trying to fill ur mistakes. Ayos yan ganyan attitude.
Actually may isang bagay n kayo natutunan s GILAS, and thats attitude.

  9. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 11:43 AM

yeah right just replace the other players who wont be able to join the team, this way we can gauge and see other prospects play in the current system of coach toroman like kelly williams, gabe norwood & sonny thoss,. sayang the opportunity to play and scout other teams if we will not play at the stankovic cup

  10. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 11:54 AM

fatigue?i understand po sir Tiu,basketball yan e,di naman sya chess.pero talagang maliit tayo,we have to have kelly and the other pros na gusto ni coach toroman para mapunuan ang kulang, kaya yan guys!we are supporting you all the way TEAM PINAS!belated happy birthday pala sayo sir Tiu.kaya natin ang IRAN,kaya natin sila lahat, kelangan lang ng support and will to win.wag bibitaw mga sir!GO PINAS!

  11. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 11:56 AM

Walang Players ba ??anung klaseng programa yan ???

Yang Stankovic Cup ang Pinaka the Best Competition na pwede nating Salihan this year bago Mag Asian Gmes bakit tayo nag babackout Bigla.

Yung mga people behind Smart Gilas should have brought in more bigger players from the very start.

    What happened???

  12. Jojo'ski // July 30, 2010 11:59 AM

in order to participate, maybe the smart gilas could perhaps borrow players from the MLhuiller lineup from Cebu or from other teams of Liga Pilipinas in case PBA won't provide players to plug in the absence of some SG players. This is to avoid sanctions from FIBA. Maybe reactivate some PBA players that are not playing in the PBA... like in the case of Crisano... What's your take on this brother?

  13. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 12:09 PM

  14. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 12:10 PM

    @PAUL and to the rest

    NOTE SA LAHAT:

May kanya kanya tayong buhay...

  15. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 12:23 PM

We have the best talents except for a fact that we don't have reliable centers.
    Power Forward: K. Williams,J.Washington,J.Aguilar.
    Small Forward: G. Norwood,A. Santos,J. Devance
    Shooting Guard:D. Hontiveros,J. Yap,S. Mercado
Point Guard :J. Alapag,W. Miller and more
Centers :Wala talaga ako maisip na pwede!
For me, we need to develop taller players like Greg Slaughter,Gian Chiu to be a reliable centers and at the same time develop more shooters in the mold of James and Don Don that can also play defense.

  16. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 12:54 PM

  17. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 12:57 PM

    @Vincent:

Because either one of them might be playing in the PBA finals next week. Nitwit.

  18. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 12:58 PM

@chris Tiu Bro im a big fan of smart gilas , Ive been watching your games live and Im proud of you guys ..And I believe that with the addition of Solomon Mercado,k-will and 2 big men from the PBA That should add toughness ,strength and experience to the team ...One point of criticism bro is that your game against japan is really bad game ..I just wanna remind you bro that your best asset in your game is you basketball IQ "your smarts" and you were definitely not using that in that game.. P.S. chris Tiu you have to use that basketball IQ of yours even if your small as long as your smart you can beat those other big guys in Asia

  19. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 12:59 PM

It's sad to see that we have a lot of good players that can't join the national team because PBA has its own business interests to protect. And now that the responsibility to represent the country was passed on to our youth, I hope that the PBA should continue to provide honest to goodness support to Smart Gilas. The talents are really in the PBA. It's only the system that prevents these talents from shining in international competitions.

@Chris Tiu, it's not your fault if you can't beat the stronger Asian teams. The PBA knows it could do better if it truly wants to help out.

  20. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 1:17 PM

1.malapit na off season ng PBA dapat i-allow na ng ipahiram yung mga players na nsa wishlist ng gilas-nt at kahit yung 2 player muna ng eliminated teamsng coke at ros like mercado and taulava
2.The PBA must accept the reality na they are old and tired league walang ng spark kahit si mark cagioa.
3.dapat change their format and establish a better mktng strategy to attract new basketball fans. The only way to do that is to allow their players to play outside the country.
4.PBA must hirea new mktg and business specialist hindi gaya ng senior citizens like barrios and prado na pang old school ang diskarte, ang kailangan yung mga young executive na magaling mag-brainstorm and open minded about lending its players to the national team.

  21. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 2:33 PM

Good Training yon sa mga available ngayon, kasi maraming wala ngayon. more playing time sa mga bangko pagkakataon makita nila ang galing nila.

  22. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 3:16 PM

arwind Santos' national stint was a disastrous one. His showtime style didnt fit well in the international game.

  23. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 4:00 PM

Maaaring "this is our moment's"..

ALWAYS PUT IN YOUR HEART SIR CHRIS...AND PAKI SABI N RIN SA MGA TEAM MATES MO BEING THE TEAM CAPTAIN......

    "WHO DO YOU PLAY FOR"....

MABUHAY KA...LABAN LANG SMARTGILAS PARA SA PILIPINAS....

  24. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 4:12 PM

  25. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 4:22 PM

James Sena from Licealiz PBL team is only 6'6" playing center!

  26. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 4:29 PM

Slaughter can't miss his class -very reasonable. Likewise his team, Ateneo needs him badly in the UAAP.

  27. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 4:38 PM

If Smart Gilas did not participate in Stancovic Cup, malamang masuspend na naman tayo ng FIBA. Syria plans to back out pero hindi nila tinuloy dahil masuspend sila ng FIBA pag nag back out sila, malamang tayo din masuspend pag hindi naglaro ang Gilas. (BAP days)

Chris the best thing is to join the Stankovic Cup to avoid the sanction from Fiba for withdrawing in the said tournament. Everyone now knows and understand the team's situation and sure does not expect much from SG NT to win the championship. I think it is prudent if SBP formally makes the request to loan Asi, Mercado, and Gabe Norwood from the PBA just for the Stankovic Cup.

  29. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 4:55 PM

Joining Stankovic not to win but to scout the opposing teams. Kasama din dapat si Douthit to scout.

There is still enough time to get Lutz's passport. I remember when Gabe Norwood 1st joined the national team he got his Phil passport on the day of departure to Japan.

join Stankovic to avoid the sanction. How can SBP earn the respect of FIBA to host future FIBA asia when on the last minute it is withdrawing, nakakahiya.

  30. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 5:00 PM

Try to get PBA players and Coach Toroman should consult the ex National team coaches and lay out his plans , his needs to fill up the gaps in our National team. In the case that other Smart Gilas players can not play for the Stankovic cup get PBA players from the team who were eliminated in the PBA conference to fill up the vacant slot of Smart Gilas. For the Asian Games get PBA players now as soon as possible to jell with the Smart Gilas Team and to familiarize the system of Toroman. I hope and pray that PBA can loan their players for our National Team.

  31. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 5:06 PM

Chris, there is nothing special about Tabuse even if he played with the Phoenix Suns! There are lots of Filipino PGs that can match his speed and talent or even play better than him. More or less you've seen and played with him. I guess it's just a matter of adjustments in defense that is needed to stop him. Are you guys watching the tapes or stored video of SG vs Japan's game?

  34. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 7:12 PM

Ok naman pala si James Sena 6'6" drafted by San Miguel kasabay nina Japeeth but never signed.

Playing and losing against highly ranked teams will make our team better. One of these years, Philippines will be basketball champions in Asia again.

  36. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 7:42 PM

Those of you who are suggesting we give back the rights to form the national team back to PBA. If we did that what will happen? well for starters we won't have an assembled national team at all, as you all know the PBA will only form the team 2 months prior to FIBA Asia. So the earliest we would have a team is July next year just like we did in 2009. Was the team formed and practicing in 2008 , nope ! The probelm is not the program which is good, but simply reinforcing team as they planned all along . You think Toroman would'nt have wanted Williams , Norwood and company earlier as in last year when they formed , Of course he did, problem was the PBA din't make them avaialble, so whose fault is that.

  37. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 8:37 PM

enough of those problems , why not just go there and play with what players Gilas have, its a learning expierience for every one, besides even if u have Kelly Williams it won't matter a bit maybe just a little

  38. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 8:37 PM

@vincent: yap and arwind santos the best pinoy bball players??u gotta be kiddin me.

have u watched the powerade national team compete last year?james yap was not consistent.arwind was insignificant.

the team were nervous ppl.couldn't get their acts together.

so you're a too die-hard pba fan, huh?

  40. Anonymous // July 30, 2010 10:28 PM

Smart Gilas team I think is 'maturing' right now... If the team gives up now, everything will be lost! Overcoming failures and fixing problems are the traits to be matured! Now, coach Toroman has spoken! He wants to upgrade his SG team, not because it was a failure but rather an eye opener for coach T that it takes time for his young players to fully matured! Remember, he's only asking those players from pba only in Asian games and his reasons on doing it? we're all guessing... Maybe this is one way of telling his SG young players... that's the way I want you to do! Go and let yourselves ready in the London Olympics qualifying tournament! In times like this we should unite as basketball loving people, pba should just try to cooperate unconditionally to test the system of coach T. until he wants it. Just a complete trust on the system and to coach Toroman, in that way Filipinos will realized that pba was doing it's share to make Philippine NT achieve its goal to be the best in Asia again!
    Go, Go, Go Gilas!!! MABUHAY!!!!
