In a much-awaited rematch, Filipino Rodel Mayol defends his World Boxing Council (WBC) light-flyweight title this Sunday against Omar Niño Romero of Mexico in Queretaro, Mexico.

Last February in Romero’s backyard in Guadalajara, the referee ruled the fight a draw after Romero hit Mayol with a vicious low blow while action was on hold. The ring physician said Mayol was unfit to continue.

“I am very sure this time that I’ll beat him,” said Mayol after weighing in at the limit of 108 lbs on Saturday in the company of trainer Jesse Arevalo, a Wild Card mainstay, Los Angeles-based Filipino-American orthodontist and cutman Dr. Ed Dela Vega and Mike Koncz, the Canadian adviser of Manny Pacquiao.

“Mayol will return to the Philippines with empty hands,” said Romero.

The WBC has appointed Hector Afu of Panama as referee, while the three judges are Samuel Conde of Puerto Rico, Daniel Mendoza of the US, and Harold Laurens of Netherlands Antilles.
