Smart Gilas sees action in US farm league

Smart Gilas Team manager Frankie Lim yesterday confirmed his squad is among the official entries in the 2011 season of the American Basketball Association (ABA) — the second biggest professional league in North America next to the NBA with 50 teams.

And to get a good feel of the game, the Nationals will be leaving today for the United States to test three ABA squads — the San Diego Surf tomorrow, Los Angeles Slam on Monday and Riverside Rainmakers on Tuesday.

Gilas will be the second foreign team to play in the ABA next to Beijing Aoshen of China led by former Los Angeles Laker Sun Yue.

The squad will be adopted by Daly City, a bustling city in San Francisco with a good-size Filipino community.

Gilas mentor Rajko Toroman will pin his hopes on skipper Chris Tiu, Mark Barocca, JR Cawaling, Aldrech Ramos, JV Casio, Dylan Ababou, RJ Jazul, Rey Guevarra, Marcio Lassiter, Mac Baracael together with the vastly-improved big men led by Greg Slaughter, Jason Ballesteros, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Japeth Aguilar.

We are delighted to have Smart Gilas in the ABA,” ABA chairman Joe Newman said. “It’s an initiative of our ABA Global platform where teams from all over the world will now get a chance to compete pro basketball in the United States every year.”

    @ all....

Mark my words, this ABA stint by Gilas is hitting three birds with one stone...

1st bird....Will help strengthen and prepare Gilas for international games

2nd bird....Will help in the possible recruitment of a big man for Gilas international tourneys

3rd bird....very good exposure for Filipino bball players. This could translate to a Filipino being able to play professional in America...NBA is a long long stretch...but maybe ABA and even NBDL can see some potential in Filipinos....I guess some PBA players that is in Gilas' wish list and has dreams to play pro in the US will hope and pray that their mother clubs will lend them to Gilas...

Joining ABA farm league will only push Gilas' bball program forward....

After the ABA tournament just believe me, lot of offers for filipino basketball players will come to play in an NBA team/s. Just imagine just one filipino player will play in an NBA team, just the support of filipino fans will fill an entire stadium.
