2nd Smart Gilas prospect eyed

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is eyeing another prospect in NBA’s developmental league veteran Brian Butch for naturalization in case talks with NBA journeyman Dwane Jones bogs down.

Smart Gilas manager Frankie Lim yesterday said they’re now in the process of pursuing the 6-11 Jones, who suited up for several teams in both the NBA and the NBDL before ending up with the Austin Toros this year.

Lim disclosed that they had been having a difficult time getting in touch with Jones’ agent since the former St. John standout is still playing with the Toros in the NDL, which is expected to conclude at the end of the month.

“We’re having a hard time getting in touch with him (Jones) and we’re using all avenues to get him because he’s what coach Rajko (Toroman) wants,” said Lim. “Although we will not give up on him (Jones), we know Brian Butch could be a great fit to the team if in case we couldn’t get Jones,” he added.

Lim said Jones, an un-drafted rookie in 2005 who signed up with the Minnesota Timberwolves the same year before he was shipped to the Boston Celtics then moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers and finally to the Charlotte Bobcats two years ago, is expected to fill the Nationals’ need for inside presence.

Butch, a white 6-11 player who plays the No. 3 spot, doesn’t have the same power and athleticism of Jones but is more versatile since he does not only defend and rebound but also a reliable scorer who can hit it from behind the arc.

If they have K Will and Japeth, I think Butch would fit the bill. Hard to get tong si Jones problema na naman yan.

I won't mind if we eventually end up with Brian Butch. He is big, not necessarily athletic, but eats up space in the paint and has a decent and consistent jump shot that is rare for big men. Gilas can be a great team with either Jones or Butch as our naturalized player . .

the kind of big man we need is in the mold of a luis scola or fabricio oberto. they have to be very good on ball defenders, rebounders and at least a decent outside shot.

either one of them is fine, i dont understand why people are saying that he cant dominate the paint? hes averaging double double with no.3 spot. so what more if hes playing pf or center. hes good enough for gilas he got a good touch from outside and hes all star mvp so he must be really good but when im watching him hes so thin but oh well i guess we cant judge the book by its coverr!

DON ADOLFO-you may have a point there but after assessing the team's progress in training and saw how Butch plays, Toroman is in the best position to know whom to select and not anybody else.
If Jones will not be available, why insist? That's why Butch is the second choice, also like what Eala was telling before, reliable-one who can rebound, defend and score.
How can you guarantee that Butch is a quitter? Jones had a history of leaving his team Serbian Red Star in a final stretch of a Belgrade tournament before. Mukhang ito ang quitter at may attitude problem rin ito!

FYI, I am not in favor either with Jones on the following factors.

1) expensive
2) waste of time (as to reliability and feasibility on construction of contract offer for him, with regards to terms and condition which the gilas could not afford)
3) attitude (we all know as a gilas fans about the ealier articles).

I deeply recognize the shooting and style of our current team right now. But in my opinion Butch is not the right person that can fight through rebounds and hassle for the put backs. Believe me he is not our guy..

sana suporatahan na lang ng government at ng ibang big companies yung smart-gilas para kahit 3 import makakuha sila... walang imposible dun basta makisama lang sana yung iba pang kumpanya mayayaman naman na sila eh... para sa bansa naman yung maitutulong nila...

bkit kukuha pa ng im ort kumuha nalang na matatangkad dito sa pilpinas and training sila at matoto pa and nag pure dugo pinoy talaga we have 6'10 6'9 6'11 6'8 na pure pinoy at muk di naman lampa example sina fajardo eman jr reyes at me iba pa chui and yuung iba di pa kilala if you know yung kukunin nila ay natrai lang naman sa nga respected an bansa nila magagaling lang talaga nag nag trinor nila to paly basketball at my time pa to train them may 1 year pa kunin nyo lahat na nag tall player dito sa pilipinas at dito lang mag train sa pinas para tipid
