Toroman wants Williams to beef up Smart Gilas

National coach Rajko Toroman is keen on getting the services of Kelly Williams to reinforce Smart Gilas Team Pilipinas which is eyeing an Olympic berth in the 2011 Fiba-Asia Championship.

Brandishing a rare combination of speed, strength and leaping ability, Williams, a 6-foot-7 former PBA Most Valuable Player, is back in harness for the Realtors after a bout with a thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) last year. The Realtors were already eliminated in the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup.

Toroman said Williams’ energy and versatility could be a major boost to their campaign, especially in the upcoming Asian Games in Guangzhou and the Fiba-Asia Championship.

Apart from Williams, who was included on Toroman’s initial list of PBA standouts along with Arwind Santos, Jared Dillinger and Gabe Norwood, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is also looking at gunner Chris Lutz from Marshall University and an American reinforcement to complete the national roster.

Lutz is set to arrive next month after campaigning for the Thundering Herds in the Division I of the US NCAA while Smart Gilas team manager Frankie Lim is already in the United States to scout for a possible naturalization candidate. Gilas import, 6-foot-11 Jamal Sampson, was already released after posting a sour performance in the 21st Dubai International Tournament.

Maybe we will need one player in the PBA and it will be Kelly Williams. He’s high on my wish list, but we will see,” said Toroman, the brain behind Iran’s return to the Olympics. “Kelly will give us toughness in rebounding that we don’t have. And he will be good for us in the Fiba-Asia Championship.”

SBP executive director Noli Eala, however, said he doesn’t see any major obstacle on the possible hiring of Williams. The PBA, after all, is in good standing with the SBP and has always been supportive of the national team program.

He added that he will work on Williams’ transfer as soon as possible.

“If he (Williams) is on the wish list of coach Rajko, we’ll have to work on it. And this early, we’re already making an appeal to the PBA,” said Eala, who led the PBA as a commissioner for four years.

There’s no turf war here. This is the national team and we share that honor with the PBA, and the PBA is a big part of our program. We hope the PBA will consider our desire to have Kelly in Smart Gilas’ lineup.”

Hope Kelly Williams will report soon to the RP Smart Gilas, and hope so Sta. Lucia will make a great great sacrifice, sayang Santa pa naman ang name nila, so they must live by the spirit of Sta. Lucia by sacrifying her life for the sake of God! In the same manner Sta. Lucia Realty shall also make a sacrifice for the sake of country and flag. See you soon kelly.

I have played a lot of basketball teams it is always the rich who could afford the most talented players win. u want an example? San miguel, France, in asia lebanon. For smart and the national teams hope u guys are rich enaf. Players are materialistic now a days

  23. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 2:50 PM

saan man nanggaling yung mga players na yan, as long as nasa national team ng pilipinas sila dapat suportahan natin yun, ma PBA,PBL,Liga Pilipinas,or Gilas dapat buo ang suporta natin, atin yan e, wag na mag away iisa lang ang bandila natin at iisa lang ang goal natin e, go pilipinas!

  24. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 2:59 PM

cash strapped ang SlR ngayon, so they will definitely "benefit" from this situation.

  25. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 3:04 PM

oo nga kunin nyo c kelly!!!!

  26. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 4:51 PM

I'm sure PBA has a hand on this development. They want to be a part of Smart Gilas success. They are now making it appear that is it Gilas who is asking for help...kung baga..saving face for PBA

  27. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 4:53 PM

Dapat ipahiram na kaagad ng PBA si K Will before its too late.

The reason why he was chosen im sure is due to the fact that he has not absorbed much of the negative traits enhanced by the PBA system, and therefore he can still be trained to play good basketball.

  28. Niknok // February 1, 2010 4:57 PM

I have nothing against Smart Gilas when they were formed to represent the country. With the latest showing from their last international game, I am very impressed with their dedication and heart to win. They made me believed in their capacity to excel in basketball. It also showed that they are in the right track armed with the superb system by Coach Toroman. If I were to dream a line up, of course I would still choose the full line up to be filled w/ the PBA talents however that won’t happen with the kind of league that PBA have. They cannot lend players to undergo training for 3 years away from their mother ball clubs (reality check). So why don’t we try to support this alternative that SBP has introduced. Filipino din naman ang mga players. Magagaling din naman ang mga yan. Developmental programme is not a joke which means, this organization is damned serious with this objective. As a pinoy, there’s nothing I can do but to support this young team no matter what. After all, whether we like it or not, they will still banner our flag during the tournaments. Let us try to duplicate what our brothers and Sisters in Dubai have showed extending their undying support when the team placed third on that tournament. This is the only way we can take part of this dream. At the end of the day, win or loose we still have served our country by this simple way. - 3STARSANDTHESAND

Gilas is our national team di lang basta basta isang team sa kung anong liga... di ko maintindihan kung bakit inis na inis ibang pinoy sa kanila hayzzz...

    Good luck sa upcoming tournaments...

  32. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 7:35 PM

  33. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 7:50 PM

plz pwede si jumar fajardo kasi he is the best center of the cebu he is the best block ang scorer......gusto ko siya ang 1on1 ni haddadi, yao ming

  34. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 8:22 PM

Kelly is the best thing in pba today..other are dillinger and norwood.. but the Guard spot is overloaded with tiu, casio, barroca, baracael.
Kelly williams could be the answer in the PF spot.
Jafet aguilar must gain muscle like Carlos Boozer or Kenyon Martin to play good in international games..
maybe if Aguilar could have the talent of williams. he could a big thing but still he has none/but he has plenty of time to improve.
a good naturalize center is biggest missing piece in this team!

the person that could provide defense/rebounding could be anthony adrastus.. the only thing is he got worst attitude than CJ Giles.. but he rebound/defend.. another thing with this guy is.. he has no offense.. just purely defense... hope to scout him... if he can help why get him.. just as a reserve.. he can provide defense even with the height of 6'10 against 7.
He's the only player i know that battles Blake Griffin in a rebounding game.!

  36. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 9:34 PM

You can read what's in Toroman's mind. He knows no one in Gilas can be trained in time to defend and match up offensively Nikkah Barhami a prolific 6'7" forward ng IRAN. knowing his former player Nikkah, Toroman can devise a plan and K Will is the ideal match up to be developed to stop him.

Iran's 2 speedy 6'2" guards can be defended well by most of Gilas players, but tall players like Norwood and Dillinger can be prepared as surprise defenders in the semis and finals.

  37. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 9:38 PM

  38. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 9:46 PM

special na mga play patterns naman ang run ni Toroman para sa mga PBA players with Gilas kaya kahit ON and OFF yong tatlo, K Will, Norwood and Dillinger makaka blend din naman sila sa play ng Gilas. Yon nga lang ma miss nila part ng elimination round ng PBA all filipino tourney sa PBA this year which overlaps with the ASIAD.

  39. Anonymous // February 1, 2010 9:59 PM

Take a look at the PBA team's rooster. walang 6'7" forward na defender and offensive player kundi si K Will.

    PBA shoo-ins For SMART GILAS:

    JIMMY ALAPAG
    ASI TAULAVA
    MICK PENNISI
    KELLY WILLIAMS
    GABE NORWOOD
    JARED DILLINGER
    *JAMES YAP
    *ARWIND SANTOS

ALISIN NA YUNG MGA MALILIIT AT DI NAPAPASOK SA GILAS.

  41. Anonymous // February 2, 2010 11:12 AM

  42. cyril // February 2, 2010 1:19 PM
