Talk n Text walked out of Game Four in protest over a flagrant foul call in the opening quarter to lose by forfeiture, enabling bitter rival Barangay Ginebra to force a sudden death in their KFC PBA Philippine Cup best-of-five showdown at the Araneta Coliseum last night.

At press time, Talk n Text governor Ricky Vargas said they’ve yet to decide whether or not they would show up for the deciding Game Five tomorrow.

PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios said Talk n Text will be slapped a severe sanction for its action – the third walkout incident in the pro league history.

Rules are rules, and we have to apply it accordingly. Half a million pesos is a basic amount of fine for a walkout. And it’s up to the commissioner if he sees further compensation that needs to be imposed,” said Barrios.

The Tropang Texters, together with team owner Manny Pangilinan and Smart-PLDT executives, left the venue barely 11 minutes gone in the game with Ginebra on top at 27-20 after the referees called a flagrant foul penalty 2 on Ranidel de Ocampo for a hard foul on a driving Ronald Tubid.

The infraction merits automatic ejection and possible suspension in the next game.

TnT coach Chot Reyes said that the call was the last straw in what they claimed as a spate of biased officiating in the series, prompting them to walk out of the contest.

Reyes said he has tapes and the statistics to back up their action. He cited in particular the fouls called on the team and the free throws awarded to the Kings from the series opener.

All we want is a fair chance, allow us to defend. Maybe perfect officiating is not possible pero huwag naman sanang garapal (but not this obvious),” said Reyes.

How far can you push a team like Talk n Text or a company like ours to accept what’s fair? May hangganan yon (There’s limit to it). We did what we had to do because we can’t accept the insult anymore. The stats will bear us out. The facts will speak for themselves,” said Vargas.

Ginebra coach Jong Uichico, however, believed Talk n Text is just trying to play mind games on the referees.

Maybe they’re not happy with the calls and they’re trying to play mental game on the refs and the commissioner, thinking they can get away with this and change the calls of the refs Sunday,” said Uichico.

Rules have to be applied. We don’t want this to happen because fans look forward to this game. These are good games to watch,” said San Miguel Corp. top official Henry Cojuangco.

It’s very unfortunate this thing happened. In the spirit of sportsmanship, they should have returned and played the game,” said Ginebra alternate governor Robert Non.

There are rules and that’s the reason there are refs to officiate the game. If there’s a flaw, there’s the technical committee to look at it. You can’t be a coach and a referee at the same time,” Non said.

Reyes cited the disparity in fouls called and vehemently questioned the flagrant infraction assessed De Ocampo on his defensive stance against Tubid.

The league commissioner, after reviewing the game tape, expressed belief the referees, in particular crew chief Throngy Aldaba, made the right call.

The Kings were ahead, 27-20, when the Texters walked out of the game.

Ginebra, under coach Sonny Jaworski, also staged a walkout in Game Six of their 1990 First Conference title showdown with Shell. It forfeited the game, lost the series and was subsequently fined P500,000.

In 2006, Red Bull attempted a walkout in a game versus San Miguel.

NOTES: With the game ending in forfeiture, several fans asked for a ticket fee refund. The league commissioner hinted Talk n Text could be held liable.

flagrant foul or not, fair officiating or not talk n text should have not walked out of the game, it leaves a bad bad impression on the team, they're a professional team and should have acted as professional, it just show how unprofessional they are....parang ngyon lng sila nglaro ng basketball....

  2. PBABoy // February 6, 2010 9:17 AM

    that is a right call!!

Classified as flagrant foul penalty 2...

    1. Physically contacting an official.
    2. Throwing the ball or an object and hitting an official, player or coach.
    • If ball or object does NOT hit the official, player or coach, a Technical Foul will be called instead and a free throw will be awarded to the opposing team of the guilty player.
    3. Elbow foul which makes contact above the shoulder level.
    4. Punching foul (closed fist).
    5. Punch that does not result on contact.

    It's rule no. 3!!!

  3. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 9:20 AM

technically it is a Flagrant Foul 2 by virtue of the rule saying that "Elbow foul which makes contact above the shoulder level" is a Flagrant Foul 2. Intentional or not, it doesn't matter...

It's like also in the shooters landing area, it's FF2 if the foot of the Defender landed on the landing area of the Shooter, it doesn't matter if it's intentional or not or just because of the momentum of the defensive player, the rule will apply it will be called FF2 also.

tnt did the right thing in my opinion, the comissioner failed to address the poor officiating...the comissioner all in all was the one to blame... the comissioner was more interested in the 500,000 fine. rather than resolving the issues..he screwed our National team by letting Yeng be the coach he is pathetic

TAMA LANG NA NAGWALKED OUT ANG TALK N TEXT PARA MAKITA NG PBA NA HINDI LANG GINEBRA ANG TEAMS SA PBA....

  10. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 10:50 AM

ANG PIKON AY LAGING TALO.I never expected it will happen again just like what happened in the Finals between GINEBRA and SHELL during the 90's.I was very disappointed with the gesture of Chot Reyes for expressing unnecessary words to turn down anybody. They should be appreciative of what happened in Zamboanga because in the event their win against SMB not upheld they will be relegated into a wild card phase not Sta Lucia.I think to avoid this thing to happen again in the future, the guilty party must be penalized up to a certain extent like say for example giving fine to as much as P100,000,000 and automatic suspension from the league for them to THINK TWICE.

  11. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 11:16 AM

Ginebra is the bloodline of the pba..without this team wla ng manunuod(totoo yan)...ilan taon n ang team na ito patuloy p rin ang supporta ng fans... part na ng history....khit cnu team ang iharap tlagang pang masa ang GINEBRA...dpat hindi ganun ang ginawa ni chot... inisip nya mabuti bgo cya ng decide to walk out...i respect both team...parehong talented ang players...but the fans love GINEBRA...

  12. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 11:19 AM

sad....nangyari ito with both talented team

  17. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 12:27 PM

  18. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 1:17 PM

I just need clarification on the 1990 walkout. Was it Ginebra or Shell that staged the walkout?

  19. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 1:21 PM

im not a TNT fan neithier a PBA fan...sorry to say but the league sucks...look where we are now in basketball standing...are we waitng na talunin nang thailand..such a dismay for a long running organization still left behind?...moderate ur greed people...that incident adds more dismay im not infavor any team because they all sucks!!!reality bites....

  20. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 1:22 PM

  22. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 1:38 PM

  23. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 1:59 PM

Lahat may mali sa laro kagabi...

    1. Talk n Text - they should not walked-out of the playing court. Fans and supporters were dismayed by they act.

    2. Refs - i watched the game twice sa CS Sports and sa BTV channel.

    3. Comm. Barrios - When the TNT walked-out of the court, it seems that Comm did not know what to do. Nakaupo lang. Dapat dun he acted on the situation right away. Si Willy Marcial pa yung natataranta.

  24. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 2:01 PM

Under the code of professionalism they should not have done that. TNT is an organization of professionals. what transpire is the result bad judgement from the part of the coach. Does the TNT knows that they have rules? me mga board para tingnan kung mag apela sila. Akala ko good coach? what a good example in the field of professionalism.wew.....Sorry could be accepted coach....

  25. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 2:23 PM

RANIDEL DE OCAMPO even before always involves himself in a siutation like this.Even in pre-season tournament when he still with Air 21,exhibition games against SMART GILAS etc.Definitely he had shown the tendency to hurt a player. On the other hand, TUBID doesn't have any impression of hurting any player. He is just playing his mental toughness which is truly part of the game.Referees are always on the look out.More than anybody else on the court, they know who are playing with respect to the rules. TNT is the CULPRIT HERE.THEY SHOULD HUMBLY MAKE A PUBLIC APOLOGY TO SAVE THEIR REPUTATION.MAHIRAP PAGMUKHAING TAMA ANG MALI.

  26. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 2:45 PM

I can't help but to shake my head to the one coach I truly admired in trying to destroy an institution which is part of his success as a coach.Without the PBA, there is no CHOT REYES.There is no such thing as GARAPALAN in officiating in the PBA.Referees commit mistake that can go both either way.I have seen much of this even in the NBA,FIBA(very confusing officiating) and any other basketball league around the World. That's what we called BREAKS OF THE BALL GAME.PEACE!

  27. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 3:02 PM

STATISTICS will not SPEAK for itself and will not RESOLVE any argument regarding which team is gaining or favoring as far as officiating is concern.PUREFOODS commits more fouls every game and takes less free throws than their opponents but still can manage to close out a game.WHY?Because they give more emphasis on PLAYING DEFENSE.Maybe TNT wants to play DEFENSE but not ready or aware of its consequences.

  28. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 3:05 PM

kasalanan talaga yan ng mga refs! masyado silang maeksena! they want to be a part of every picture! di kasi pinapakita na sinasanction yang mga yan e. nawawala na yung excitement ng laro dahil sila na ang nagdedecide ng games! this has long been a problem of the league! but i still love the pba.

May problema na talaga ang PBA as a basketball association sa Pinas. PBA officials from commish down to the lowest rank and file needs overhaul.

  30. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 3:18 PM

Bad Calls, Many free throws given, not fair etc.. TNT shouldn't walked out.."PBA- Proffesional Basketball Association" its their profession, even chot said its the end of the straw, its not justifiable, it's like an employee walking out sa office or prang awol..or a call center agent leaves the office cause of a bad call, w/c is abandonment of call dba..chot what d F are you thinking man..

  31. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 3:54 PM

well, it really is sad that history repeats itself...

    1. Ginebra Walk Out - 1990
    2. Red Bull Walk Out - 2006
    3. Talk and Text Walk Out - 2010

Can you blame the last 2 teams who followed suit? As the saying goes "Follow the Leader"!

  32. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 4:24 PM

If I remember right there was also a walkout staged by Shell when the ballons were released from the rafters while there were a few minutes still left in the final quarter.

    aldaba sucks!

  34. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 4:58 PM

not fair officiating i watched the game from game 1 to game four pabor ang mga refs sa ginebra.. lagi foul.. obvious naman para madaming kitain ang pba gusto nilang pumasok ang ginebra sa finals.. im not a tnt fan but sana maging fair yun hindi lang ginebra ang team sa pba.. and masasama aang ugali ng fan ng ginebra.. nambabato ng banda ng tnt..tama lang ginwa ng tnt.. PBA be fair!

  35. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 4:59 PM

what kind of oraganization is that... just like a team that comes from the street.. im a fan of TNT but now i dont think thier a good example to the public.... rule no. 3 said "elbow foul which makes contact above the shoulder level" intentionally or not.... is flagrant 2... i admire coach chot his a good coach...but IS HE READING THE RULES/or DOES HE UNDERSTAND IT...!!! i dont think so....even in NBA there are calls like that.. there are fouls that are not foul.. the TNT management is not good..they allow that they should fine 1M pesos... of ban to the league...for few games....so that they will learn how to read and understand the RULES...

  36. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 5:25 PM

Kung talagang officiating ang problema ng tnt FROM GAME 1 pa lang, bakit pa nila pinaabot ng game 4 bago sila magreklamo sa pba management or technical committee?? dahil ba nanalo lang sila ng first two games? at ngayong pakiramdam nila e kaya na silang talunin ng ginebra, bigla nilang gagawin ang mag-walk out sa 1ST QUARTER pa lang! Napakahaba pa ng game.. haaaay..

  37. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 5:31 PM

Kung talagang game 1 pa lang nakikita na ng tnt na unfair ang tawag, bakit pa nila pinaabot ng game 4?? pwede naman silang mag-appeal na sa pba management agad kung talagang unfair daw ang mga tawag. dahil ba nanalo sila sa first two games kaya ganon? at pakiramdam nila kaya na silang talunin ng tnt? tsk. just my thoughts..

  38. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 5:32 PM

FAIR or NOT FAIR TNT could've returned to play the game...they made their point,it's fair for the fans to see them play...

"Wala yata tiwala si CHOT sa Players nya!"

  39. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 6:11 PM

Any coach can not decide to walk out without a blessing from their management.I agree kay anonymous Feb 6, 2010 1:59 pm lahat sa tatlo ay may mali peru (IMHO) laking pagkakamali/responsibilidad ay kay kume SB and the refs.

  40. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 6:20 PM

  43. Anonymous // February 6, 2010 10:25 PM

walking out in fight is an act of cowardice and unsportsmanship. there is a proper table and place for complaints.

  45. eG !! // February 6, 2010 10:46 PM

    DAPAT MAY REFUND!!!!!!!!!!!! AMP YAAAAAAAANN!!!
