Sta. Lucia Realty team PBA governor Buddy Encarnado said Monday he sympathizes with the plight of the Smart-Gilas national team but he questioned the way how the top executives of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) conveyed their message to the team regarding plans to recruit one of Sta. Lucia’s top players.
SBP executive director Noli Eala told reporters the other day that he and Gilas coach Rajko Toroman would like to have Realtor Kelly Williams to shore up the team when Gilas begins its international campaign this year.
According to Encarnado, while he understands the predicament of Gilas, he said that by coming out in public without formal discussion with them puts direct pressure on the team.
He said there are many things to consider before a deal can be made to allow the 6-foot-7 Williams to play for the national team.
“I will discuss this first with management and to Kelly. I want to know their (Gilas) schedule,” Encarnado said. “From there we can probably see kung pwede. We have to balance siyempre yung team and yung pagiging patriotic natin.”
While he is open to discussion he said that by going to the press, the team and management feel some pressure.
“I’ve never talked to him (Eala) or coach Toroman,” Encarnado told the Bulletin in a phone interview.
“They’re putting pressure on us. All off a sudden, here they are coming out in public. Ayoko man tingnan ng ganun, pero may pressure na agad e.”
“I don’t think they want to pressure us, but the method... they’re feeling the waters. They should sit down with us first. Hindi ganito,” he added.
As much as SLR wants to help the national team, there are things that should be considered, like the calendar of events the RP team will be competing should not be in conflict with that of the PBA schedule and the kind of tournaments Gilas will be joining.
Eala reportedly wants Williams for this year’s Asian Games and the FIBA-Asia Championship next year, the qualifying event for the 2012 London Olympics.
Encarnado also said that there is an existing agreement between the PBA and the SBP that the SBP will not get any player from the pro league for the national team.

See, PBA people were crab mentality. PBA is there for money making and ads. They don't care for this country. I don't think SBp puts pressure on them, they were just sharing there idea in the public. Still at the end, they will communicate with Sta. Lucia. It is clear that Buddy Encarnado doesn't want to lend Williams to the National Team.

Dapat isasagot ni Mr. Encarnado, its an honor that one of our players is chosen to don the national color, well I would like to recommend to SBP to make a formal request etc etc. Napaka negative naman nang statement ng mga taong ito, akala mo anong pinag awayan na titulo sa PBA, pang barangay lang naman na titulo yan sa tingin namin.

Diyan na lang sa Pinas ang mahina info campaign about the national team issues. PBA mentality will only change pagka manipis na viewerships.

SMART Gilas was asked by the press who they want from the PBA, and an answer was given. SLR should not feel pressured by the answer because the question from the press was reasonable. Besides the decision to lend Williams is still the decision of SLR.

National team is never a priority for Encarnado thats why that was his immediate reaction. In fact talagang walang team sa PBA ang magpapahiram ng players. Kaya guys forget it.

ive been silent and observing for awhile here pero sa reaction ni encarnado im compelled to share my views.alam nyo before palagi ako nakaantabay sa pba.ph..ngayon nasa teampilipinas.info na ako lagi.bakit PBA becomes so boring now a days.seeing thesame team going to finals..the same intensity of action..makes it predictable and i loss my taste watching the game.but here comes Gilas.infact me too stayed late night just to open my laptop and keep myself updated about our national team.its an honor and our pride to have this gilas.seeing them winning games makes our world go round especially for us OFW's.the msg of SBP is just feelers.but encarnado reacts as if they are pressured because in the first place they really dont want to lend williams.they are keen to have all the reasons in the world not to lend him.but since SBP send the feelers through media..everybody knows already who they want and if sta lucia wont lend kelly all people will hate them..thats the pressure there.if they really keen on lending kelly then there's no pressure after all.di ba pips?

Pag pinahiram nyo si Williams, dadami ang fans at supporters ng SLR. Pero pag hindi nyo pinahiram si Williams, maraming mananalangin na hindi kayo mag cahampion sa mga liga dyan sa PBA at sana parati talo ang team nyo.
Cgurado mababawasan pa fans at supporters nyo. Ang magiging tingin kc ng karamihan sa SLR management ay unpatriotic, pang personal na interest ang priority at swapang.

kung sa boxing may freddie roach, sa basketball may toroman. i hope pba should trust him the way manny trusts roach. toroman believes that the national team needs the 3 pba players for the success of our national team. sana maintindihan nang pba yong idea na yon. wag na nilang sabihin na hindi kailangan yong pba players, kasi nga SINABI NANG KAILANGAN. Kasi sina alvarez may sama lang nang loob yan sa smart gilas. kaya kung ako sa kanya tumahimik na lang sya. NAGMUMUKHANG MADAMOT LANG ANG PBA. Sa isang banda sila din ang mawawalan nang fans. Dadami ang fans nang smart gilas. Filipinos love underdogs, ung inaapi. Wrong political move on the part of PBA. later on, fans will turn away from pba (well nangyayari na).
comon pba. pagkakataon nyo na na makabawi sa ibang asian teams na nilampaso kayo in many competitions. aminin nyo na toroman is a lot better than many of your coaches. may alam talaga!!!

Interesante ang pananaw ng ating katoto tungkol sa patriotism..so para sa iyo as long as we are represented e ok lang sayo yun kahit bokya at mukhang katawa tawa at whipping boys tayo ng Asya..nagampanan na ng mga players ang tungkulin nila para sa Bayan e..therefore patriotic na sila…tsk tsk tsk tsk..
Ang ganitong attitude ng iilan kaya walang nararating ang ating bansa, Kung ganito ang paraan mo ng pagtanaw ng patriotism pare at sa tingin mo sa amin ay mga kawawa..pwes kawawa na kami..pero sa tulad ko na nagtatrabaho sa ibang bansa lubos kong ginagamit ang aking kakayahan upang ipakita sa ibang lahi..lalo sa mga kanluranin na kaya ng Pinoy na makipagsabayan sa kanila..ayaw ko na minamaliit at binababa ang tingin sa ating mga Pilipino dahil naniniwala ako na magagaling at WORLD CLASS tayo..hindi lang naman ako ang may paniwala ng ganito..madami kaming mga nangingibang bayan na dala ang bigat ng responsibilidad na ipakita sa ibang lahi ang kakayanan natin…upang tayo ay RESPETUHIN…upang tayo ay HANGAAN.
Masisisi mo ba kami kung aming hingin sa mga kinauukulan na ibigay din nila ang lahat para sa ating bayan? Lahat tayo ay binigyan ng maykapal ng kakahayan para ating gamitin para sa ikabubuti at ikararangal ng bansa. Binigyan niya ang mga PBA players ng kakayahan maglaro ng basketball para gamitin pero bakit kanila itong pinagdadamot?
Gusto ko ibahagi sa iyo ang isang experience ko dito. Nung makathird place ang Gilas dito sa Middle East nilapitan ako ng isang Jordanian at tinanung ako kung Pilipino ako sabi ko oo, sinabi niya na “your team was very good they beat us”, inispecial mention pa si Casio pare alam mo ba pakiramdam ng purihin sila ng ibang lahi kaibigan, para nading pinuri ka nila? Palagay ko ay hindi alam ang pakiramdam ng ganun kasi kaiba ang pananaw mo sa patriotism e.

TNT & ROS are willing to release Norwood and Dillinger because they don't need them as much as SLR needs Williams.
Todd Rundren...SLR has won its only All Filipino championship with Williams in fact. SMC TNT BGK all spend money to get the "best" players. I wonder why Toroman isn't wishing for any of those players. Williams turned down SMC when they tried to make arrangements before he was drafted.
Its obviously not about the money with Williams. Maybe for SLR but not for Williams. Kelly obviously proudly wears the RP colors as he has shown the past tournaments.
People, if you are a fan of the PBA, support them. If you're a fan of flag and country, support that. But don't put the other down. That mentality does not help the country as a whole and as a people.
Asa pa tayo magpahiram yan! Eh sa Power-rade ni Guiao hindi nga pinahariram si Williams at Reyes.
