After checking out the field in the Middle East, the Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team now wants to size up Asian powerhouses China and Korea.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala said Smart Gilas should now test its mettle against the Chinese and the Koreans to get a clear picture of the opposition in the Asian Games in November.
“At this point, it’s time for us to play against China and Korea, and probably Kazakhstan, because its important for our boys to take a mental note of these teams,” said Eala.
Smart Gilas held its own against the tough Middle East competition when it faced Lebanon, Jordan and Iran in the Fiba Champions Cup in Jakarta last year and the 21st Dubai International Tournament last month.
Teams in the Dubai tournament, where Smart Gilas copped the bronze medal at the expense of Syria’s Al Jalaa, were represented by national players with three imports.
“These teams are getting older and weaker going into the Fiba (Asia) Championships while we are getting stronger and stronger every day,” said Gilas coach Rajko Toroman.
Smart Gilas is preparing for the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China on Nov. 12 to 27 and the 2011 Fiba Asia Championship, which offers a single ticket to the 2012 London Olympics.
But Toroman said it’s not easy to arrange a date with the Chinese national squad even in an exhibition game.
“Based on my experience, the only time you get to play China is during the Fiba (Asia) Championships,” said Toroman, who steered Iran to the 2007 Fiba Asia crown on the way to its first Olympic stint in Beijing in 2008.
As for the core of the Korean and Kazakhstan national teams, Toroman said these countries usually join the annual Jones Cup in Taipei where Smart Gilas is also set to compete.

I tink china is beatable w/o Yao Ming. china's frontline is lead by Yi Jian Lian & d aging but stil very reliable Wang Zhizhi. China was humbled by Iran last year in its homeland, & it barely survived Lebanon & Jordan. i tink Iran wil continue 2 improve coz d core of d team are young players. Jordan wil stil be a potent weapon, while lebanon is very strong on paper & i expect d team 2 further improve. Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Qatar & Kazakstan are good teams too, although i tink some of d key players of Japan & Qatar are not geting any younger, someting Gilas wud hav some advantage

If ever Norwood, K Will, Dillinger, Chris Lutz will make it, huwag muna silang palarauin sa games between these best Asian teams to avoid being scouted. Yong original line up muna + the naturalized 6'11" center. Kahit bangko muna ang 4 na stars, in so doing tayo ang makaka gauge at makaka scout ng lakas ng kalaban.

Sure win ba ka mo?
Eh nuong mga naka raang ASIAN competitions, saan ba pinulot ang PBA backed national team?
In the last 5 editions ( '94, '98, '02, 07 and '09) of all pro national team, isang beses lang nagka medalya at bronze pa.
Mas magaling nga no doubt , eh hindi naman nila kaya maipanalo ang laro. Aanhin mo naman ang magaling pero pagdating sa labanan kakain lang ng alikabok? Duon ka na sa less talented pero effective naman pagdating sa FIBA-events. Kumbaga sa baril, mataas nga ang kalibre ng mga PBA players, eh hindi naman makaka tama at hindi kayang makipag sabayan sa putokan.
So, I think the addition of Williams is enough plus one reliable 7 footer na import. With that line up, the team will be competitive already.

as i read your comments, itong si mr. 2:11 pm hindi nakakaintindi ng basketball...tama si mindmaster 221, wala sa kalibre ng baril yan, depende yan kung paano bumaril at dumiskarte... as you see the european teams, hindi sila yung kung turira ay may porma, very basic sila pero effective di ba? yan ang smart-gilas ngayon...di tulad ng PBA puro porma. wala naman binatbat sa jones cup, asian games at kahit saan...baka kahit ilaban sila sa UAAP or NCAA, baka mahirapan pa sila...that's my point..ok

Bago ka mag comment eh gamitin mo naman kukote mo ha,sure win ba kamo?! Ilan taon na nagpapadala ng pro sa international games eh saan sila pinupulot? Sa kangkungan, isang beses lang ata nagka medal. Yan ang hirap sa iba sa atin eh, ang tinitingnan lang yung porma sa laro. Crossover dito crossover doon, puro dribble at pa pogi lang yung ibang pros. Pero pag sinabak na sa International, isang malaking kamote na. Success in international basketball does not depend on pure talent alone, look what happened to the U.S. national team a few years ago. They were beaten by Euro teams which are obviously less talented than the US cagers. Pero andun yung system na effective, knowledge of the game, teamwork , basic fundamentals. Walang flashy style ala NBA,pero effective pa rin. Yan ang ini implement sa Smart Gilas ngayon. Kaya iho, baguhin mo na pananaw mo sa international brand of basketball. Basics muna bago porma hane.
