Smart Gilas Pilipinas, a team which held its own against the powerhouse squads in the Asian region, doesn’t need reinforcement from the Philippine Basketball Association, according to top executives of the pro league.
PBA chairman Lito Alvarez assessed that the RP development team is just “one dominant big man away" from fulfilling its goal of making the London Olympics.
“What they need is just an American big man who can patrol the shaded lane and they’re ready to go," Alvarez told GMANews.TV. “Hindi na nila kakailanganin ang PBA players because the system is already in place."
Smart Gilas is currently shopping around for an American center to naturalize after parting ways with first prospects CJ Giles and Jamaal Sampson.
PBA Commissioner Sonny Barrios practically shared the same view as Alvarez, adding the possibility of disrupting the Gilas players’ chemistry with the infusion of a pro cager.
“Baka naman kasi kapag kumuha pa sila sa amin, eh imbes na makabuti, mapasama pa," said Barrios. “Kasi nga naman, their players have already sacrificed a lot tapos kung kukuha pa sila sa amin, baka sumama pa loob nila, notwithstanding the fact na baka makaapekto sa team chemistry nila."
Prior to the team's campaign in the Middle East, Smart-Gilas coach Rajko Toroman expressed his intentions to tap the likes of Kelly Williams of Sta. Lucia, Jared Dillinger of Talk 'N Text and Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine as possible reinforcement for his young troop.
But Barrios thinks that Smart-Gilas’ strong third-place finish in the Dubai International basketball tournament could be the determining factor as to how the team’s program will go.
“It might also leave a bad impression to their players na nagsasakripisyo na nang matagal if ever they will include PBA players. Maybe yung request nila asking the PBA to beef up their squad was a few months ago, noong hindi pa sila sumasabak sa tournament sa Middle East. I think yung line of thinking nila is iba na at this time," Barrios said.
For Alvarez, he doesn’t believe that Smart Gilas is seriously asking for reinforcement, especially when the pro league has yet to receive a formal request from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. The PBA is a stakeholder in the SBP.
“I’d like to believe na publicity lang yun because the SBP has not furnished us a request. If ever they’re serious about it, then they should formalize their request," Alvarez said. - GMANews.TV

Mr. Alvarez, Mr. PBA Commissioner.. These are the kind of statements that will really give the PBA a big blow. You don't know how a lot of people adore the Patriotism of Smart Gilas and the way they play. I sincerely hope that the PBA closes down. The players have nowhere to go if they stick to the PBA. Filipino players should aim for bigger leagues like the Euroleague. The players can start in the ABL or in China where top ex-NBA players like Stephon Marbury, Rodney White, Maurice Taylor are strutting their wares.
SBP just want to make sure that we will send the best team possible for future international competitions that's why they explore many options and one option is to sign Pros from PBA. We know that we need big man for Naturalization that's why Frankie Lim is in US right now. Coach Toroman might be thinking of considering Kelly Williams, Gabe Norwood and Jarid Dillinger for defensive purposes in perimeter and these Guys are more athletic.
It's quite disappointing that we never been successful in international competitions so far because of these scenarios. As we all know Coach Toroman was successful in Iran because he never had problems like this, whoever player he want to include in Iran Nat'l Team he easily got. Come on guys let's unite for sake of Basketball. It's really shameful that we never been at least in semis in FIBA tournament for a long long time despite we are playing a lot of basketball. For instance here in Saudi Arabia, those who are playing basketball are almost all OFWs and we seldom see Jordanians, Lebanese and Iranians playing and yet they are on top in FIBA Asia and in fact, they will be playing this year in Turkey for World Championship. OMG!

TApos sa huling statement about publicity....where did this come from? The Gilas program is never a publicity stunt....they play with their heart and soul every single game...
If there is someone to be accused of doing publicity stunts, it is the PBA who might be guilty of this in the past, accepting the role of bringing RP basketball back to intl repsectability by forming the national teams but whose commitment is half baked at best...many people wondered aloud that the PBA backed the RP team before because they wanted to be more popular to the Filipinos, thus bringing them good business...

i am a basketball fanatic...i used to watch pba since 70's..nakita ko kung gaano naging succesful ang bayan ng mga superstar...pero tuwing magpapadala ng all-pro squad sa asean games simula 1990...kasunod noon ay pagkadismaya ng mga fans sa resulta ng kampanya at pagbaba ng popularidad ng liga...sa aminin at hindi...magmula ng buuin ang pba...iyon ang naging simula ng pagbagsak ng pilipinas sa larangan ng basketball sa international competition...masakit tanggapin pero iyon ang katotohanan...matatalinong tao ang bumubuo ng pba gaya ng mga taong namumuno sa bansa natin pero ano ang nanyayari? naghihintay ang sambayanang basketbolista...pba..gumising naman kayo sa pagkakahimbing...simple lang ang hinihiling ng pambansang koponan at ng sambayanan...kung hindi ngayon kailan ninyo ibabangon ang karangalan ng inyong institusyon?

The final decision to play for a National Team is on the player himself. PBA will have no option if Kelly will do a Japeth, were he will publicly say his preference to play is for the NT rather than the PBA.
If Kelly is still interested in his future from playing basketball then he is better off joining the NT than waste his time and talent in the PBA.

Fan ako pgdating s basketbol, mtagal n kong disapointed of losing teams, (UE 14-0 loses to lasalle, FEU to UE, RP Team loses a lot) and Im hoping to the Gilas team. On my opinion, d kelangan ng gilas PBA players. PBA players takot mainjury kaya d binibigay 100%, Gilas players khit may injury laro pa rin with level of playing for country i give 200% not considering lack of height.. Wag na tayong tatanggap ng PBA players, just stick to the line-up, khit wlang MAlaking Mamang Kano.

pba lacks of exciting games,quality players,world class plays and poor pa sa marketing strategy to lure basketball and non pba fans.
how can we support sariling atin and patronize local products sa pba..kung hindi natin nasusubukang pang-export quality ang product..ang problema goods are poorly sold locally dahil sa substandard and hindi pumasa internationally like powerade..nasira lng ang endorsement sa energy drink because of dismal showing last fiba asia.
