Smart Gilas win over Al Gezira-Egypt, 82-78, Enters Semis of Dubai basketball meet

DUBAI — Smart Gilas Pilipinas crashed into the semifinals of the 21st Dubai International Tournament after fending off Egypt's Al Gezira, 82-78, Wednesday night (early Thursday in Manila) before a horde of overseas Filipino workers at the Al Ahli Club here.

Skipper Chris Tiu converted five freethrows in the dying seconds as the RP dribblers advanced to the Final Four match against Al-Riyadi of Lebanon – a team bannered by ex-Gilas reinforcement CJ Giles and former PBA import Nate Johnson - Friday night.

Tiu's end-game courage sustained a game-long brilliance by Marnel Baracael, who pumped in 24 points, including the go-ahead basket with under two minutes to play.

Baracael's floater broke the final deadlock and gave Gilas a 77-75 edge.

The Nationals then stifled the Egyptians in the next two possessions before Tiu started hitting his freebies.

Tiu nailed the last two freethrows with just a fraction of a second left after a flagrant foul that assured victory for the Filipinos.

"We played with a big heart. But still, we're not satisfied. We want to go to the Finals,'' said RP coach Rajko Toroman.

Toroman shifted to the zone after Gilas fell behind by 15 in the closing minutes of the second.

It proved favorable and allowed Gilas to take the driver's seat midway in the third, 53-48, after shooting excellently from long range.

Jason Ballesteros again filled in the need for an able slotman after Jamal Sampson spent the entire second half on the bench while Marco Lassiter impressed Toroman with his hustle and steals.

Mark Barroca and JV Casio were also instrumental during their fightback from a 24-39 deficit with Casio nailing two threes during a 12-0 third-quarter run.

"We're up at the start. But we're down by 15 in the second quarter and went up again for the win,'' said Toroman. "These things show the character of this team.''

The Egyptians wiped out the Filipinos’ 14-6 lead by firing 15 consecutive points through Jarred Merill and Shref Guneidi.

Gilas then tightened the noose in the zone while shooting torridly from all angles to overhaul the Egyptian advantage.

After Casio's triple forced a deadlock at 48, Baracael and Lassiter scored five more points, allowing Gilas to take control entering the fourth. - with reports from Albert Alba, GMANews.TV

sampson could do what giles could. nasa assignment lang ng coach on what particular job would he fit for the team to win! mahirap atang gawin na nasa defensive rebound ka e kaw ang iintayin para sa offensive shot hehehe. manyayari yan kung di nakakashoot mga tira ng kakampi nya. Go Philippine Team!

    Congats nanaman sa Gilas Team:

this is really a strong tourment for gilas to hone their skills ....after you beat egypt, maybe libya, uganda yung next team...hehehe or you can add seira leonne...really this is a strong tournament according to some idiots and pretenders....

iam a fan of this gilas team pero nakakasawa na tingnan...e alam naman natin talaga na hangang dun lng talaga kaya ng mga bata na to.. e kitang kita naman talaga wala talagang talent team na to unless mg palit ng players...we just keep on suporting them even we knew already na wala talangang patotongohan to sa big tournaments...we portrayed to be hypocrites for them but for me i cant live to be a hypocrite for long....PLAN B na tayo para hindi sayang yung pera....

- Juan of Manila

    ===========================================

Talaga? Hehe.

Congrats Gilas! Keep up the good work! :)

  33. Yeng // January 21, 2010 10:24 AM

toroman is the best coach right after ron jacobs ....

gilas plays very good under pressure ... team work is highly vissible ....

i single out baracael his the scoring machine the gilas needs .... tiu with his hustle plays and smart defene and casio for his slow motion offense ...

to sum it all they play like one cohesive unit ... that's were our other national team needs ..... this gilas team is the best team formed by far right after the ron jacobs era ...

    finals here we come .....

mula paa,ulo , likod..halos lahat injury sa kanya

Nextgame, dapat ang gilas focus parin sa system....di dapat nila bigyan ng to much focus si giles or else they will loss their chemistry. Coach Toroman......unleashe your secret gameplan.

  44. Anonymous // January 21, 2010 11:04 AM

PBA Are mercenaries that play for money not for the philippine squad... to be included in the national team is a bonus to them...
    nothing big...
    sayang yung talent nang pba...
pero khit college boys yung gilas...
they can kick ass in international competition..
while pba are mercenary pros thats being kick internationally .. because pro basketball depends on individual skills not on team work...
unlike in gilas... their is no consistent scorer... somebody could drop 20 points a game then another game he drops 4 points .. but somebody step up again to score 20 points..
    while pba backed teams
depends on shower points of yap,dillinger,norwood..and later of skyrus

    MAXIMIZE Our Potential:

we cannot maximize our potential if we just use a good system without the good/best players....we know we have a lot of good and talented players in our country and why not use them?,,,,if you cannot get the services of our good players which is from the PBA then you should make a solution to solve that problem....we should not just give up to that problem....getting our second best players is not the solution to that problem...collegiate stars, i dont even think f they are our second best players...granting they really are....sayang ang systema ni toroman,,,,sayang yung opportunity to have 1 import....sayang....Maximize Our Potential.

  47. Anonymous // January 21, 2010 11:22 AM

Individual talent is already a given in every national team, may it be Gilas or Powerade. What spells the difference is their passing ability and familiarity with each other. this provides them an edge over a team who's only able to practice for around 3months and doing so while still practicing for their mother team. you can not expect such a team to have this much chemistry which translates to fluidity of offense. Another key factor is the focus of the players. PBA players have their PBA careers and contract to uphold. they need to stay in shape so that when they get back to their team, they won't be damaged goods. with this pulling them back, you can not expect them to go all out and rough it out with the other national teams since this is only 'service' for them, something they do at the side. as for the Gilas team, this is their life. no other baggages except for this. no other system to remember to mix up what's currently being taught. their focus is the current system, not another system with another team they are also practicing with. This are the reason why I believe that this move to create a national team is very wise one. too bad there are still a lot of us who act like crabs. Funny how those who are abroad seems to be more supportive than the ones here in the Philippines... hay, Pinoy nga naman... -AOB

    CONGRATS!!

  52. skyfriend // January 21, 2010 11:48 AM

wow, i've seen the game from the start to finish, egypt led by 14 points but Pilipinas erase it with precise shooting, galing talaga, quickness won the game, mas ok si sampson kay giles kasi mas malapad at disiplinado althogh hindi sa ofensive player but he can score if needed besides we have a lot shooters... guys its not fair to compare powerade and gilas, as long as good for philippines...go go go go go....

All american starting five nila. I am hoping for a Gilas win of course. But if they do not make it, ok na rin ang pinakita nila. Referees should be selected from Serbia, Korea, China, Jordan, Lebanon, Japan, wak lang PBA referees di mananalo PBA kung sila'y paglalabanin..

actually playing time ni sampson limited masyado dahil may injury, 2nd quarter lng sya pinasok d pa natapos, around 7-8 mins lang cguro. lahat gumawa puro locals, sentro lng nila c balesteros lumalaban sa malalaki. magaling talaga systema ni toroman, malalaki talga kalaban may import pa, d makayanan nag one-on-one , nag zone defense ngaun nag gilas, khit malalaki d makapasok. sa 4th quarter halos 3 guards na ginamit ni toroman. makikita mo talga ang puso ng gilas maglaro. kaya go gilas

Coach Toroman system work for the team & the players heart & pride for the glory of our nation .

Yeng Guiao should learned this attitude to Coach Toroman & not his pride . I remember when Coach Toroman gave his hand to powerade to scout a game , " YENG GUIAO " declined Toroman's offer & say's it is Coach Duremdes doing that assigngment for the powerade . Look what happened to powerade .

Toroman's system is working in it's early stages, what more kung nandyan na si Lutz and possibly Kelly Williams at Norwood.

Very good analysis again by Bonel Cabatu and September. This guys should be utilized by the coaching staff of PBA.

Gilas will find it very difficult to use these PBA players since they will need to unlearn a lot of bad habits they picked up from their PBA teams even before they are trained to play good basketball.

So for them to get into the system of Gilas, Toroman will have to spend years before they become productive with the team.

CONGRATS SMART GILAS! DEFINETELY a stint in d semis is already a big achievment considering d kind of oposition d gilas team is facing in dubai. dos are d top pro teams in d midle east led by top nat'l team cagers plus bolstered by 3 american imports each. our team faces al-riyadi lebanon in d semis, looking at al-riyadi's line-up, parang nakakatakot! imagine 3 legitimate american imports plus naturalized player and former NBA vet na c JACKSON VROMAN. & another former NBA na c Matt fregie. BUT LABAN LANG TAYO! LETS MAKE DOS LEBANESE MAKE A RUN 4 DEYR MONEY! GO GILAS! KAYO ANG TUNAY NA ASTIG!

I'm so very proud of what GILAS did last night. I cant imagine how they manage the game in a tall, smart & talented opponent (Egypt)in which they are down by 15 points at end of 2nd quarter. And the best thing of that is they limited the playing time of Sampson in which our local step up well with their team work and good coordination. Keep it up guys...I know this is just the start of your task to represent the Philippines.

MAXIMIZE OUR POTENTIAL - BONEL CABATU

Ok sana, but if you are talking of a system, then it will be so much harder for PBA talents to learn, even if according to you they have better potential.

They have to unlearn the old system before they can learn a new one. Plus all the bad habits, are very difficult to undo. Your idols works for a system such as the PBA, and clearly it does not work on international Basketball.

Lets give Toroman the choice, he will surely pick someone whom he thinks has the best chance of adapting to his system, and lets hope PBA will support him.

Toroman is doing a good job with Smart Gilas.

It's a matter of priority. PBA players must prioritize their PBA contracts hence, iwas playing too hard dahil baka ma-injure. Yung mg Gilas players naman, may kontrata sa Gilas, so todo banat kasi, if they don't, they lose their Gilas contracts.

Kaya ako? Gilas players na. They give 100% kasi.

    MAXIMIZE Our Potential:

....getting our second best players is not the solution to that problem...collegiate stars, i dont even think f they are our second best players...granting they really are....sayang ang systema ni toroman,,,,sayang yung opportunity to have 1 import....sayang....Maximize Our Potential.

you should take note that most pba superstars right now were former collegiate stars.. so give them time to grow... at least theyre growing up in a system that would realy enhance their full potentials in international basketball and not in money ball...
