DUBAI—Smart Gilas Pilipinas put up a gallant front in the absence of naturalization candidate Jamal Sampson but just couldn’t find a way to match up with Al Jalaa of Syria’s size and a setback early Friday at the start of the import-laced Dubai Invitational here.
Egged wildly by a thousand-strong Filipino crowd at the Al-Ahli Sports Complex, JV Casio, only on his second real basketball game since being sidelined by a contusion he sustained in an exhibition game with Alaska, carried most of the fight for the country as he unleashed a 23-point outburst.
But the absence of Sampson, a 6’11” former NBA veteran who is being eyed by RP for naturalization hoping to give it inside muscle, proved too much for the Filipinos, who were just no match against the taller, bigger Syrians, who played with three American reinforcements.
Filipino-American Marcio Lassiter, Mac Baracael, Japeth Aguilar and Jason Ballesteros tried to plug the gaping hole by chipping in 11, 11, 10 and 10 points, respectively, and providing the needed rebounds and interior defense but Sampson was just too big a void to fill into.
Curiously, Sampson complained of pain on his knees and decided only not to play during the pre-game warm up.
“It’s always very difficult for us to play this game because all these teams, they have three Americans,” said RP’s Serbian coach Rajko Toroman. “We played without Sampson and it shocked us in the beginning.
“This competition, if we play without a big guy, we will not do too much,” he added.
Truly, Smart Gilas was jarred by the game time decision by Sampson not to play and started out sluggish and fell to a 0-13 deficit at the start of the game.
“He said had some sort of knee injury but I was thinking he’ll solve his problem. It shocked us that’s why we started 0-13 and after that it was very difficult to return to the game,” said Toroman.
Bernie Atienza, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas deputy executive director, said they would send Sampson to the doctors for re-evaluation, hoping he could suit up against Champville of Lebanon Saturday (1 a.m. RP time).
“Officially, we’ll have to verify tomorrow (Saturday). We’re still hoping he (Sampson) could play tomorrow and the rest of the games here,” said Atienza, who is the highest SBP official here since executive director Noli Eala was expected to arrive only Friday afternoon.
Smart Gilas captain Chris Tiu said he was disappointed with the development.
“Of course it was disappointing because we were hoping the team will be complete. Beforehand in games against Qatar and practice games here, we knew who would play,” said Tiu.
“This is really our problem, rebounding and our interior defense and then we’ll just know that he (Sampson) will not play. It wouldn’t have been better if he said it earlier and not decide during the warm up.
“It was really disappointing but on the positive side, everyone really fought hard. Balle (Ballesteros) was undersized but he really fought hard as well as the whole team to show that we have hard and we will fight whatever the odds are,” he added.
The Filipinos, however, didn’t give up easily as Aguilar went into a dunking spree and jammed in baskets four times to help them get back into the game.
And after skipper Chris Tiu and Baracael drained a pair of booming triples, RP finally equalized, 29-all midway in the second quarter.
But it turned out the Filipinos’ last hurrah as the Syrians closed the quarter with a 14-5 exchange to go into the break with a 43-34 lead.
And then the Syrians went into attack mode in the third canto as they pounded it inside to lead by as much as 26 points twice, the last at 74-48 to end the period.
RP, behind Casio and Ballesteros, tried to mount one final fight back but the hole was just too big for the Filipinos to get out from.

its ok mga pre..they came there to learn and to test where they are right now.. Sampson might not be playing to avoid scouting reports from other team or he was given time to play he will be advised to play as a Role Player(rebounder and defender) rather than scoring for him not to attract scouters from other team to create tactical actions for him in the future games..
Dont worry.. Manalo or Matalo cla jan sa Tournament.. Atleast may matutunan cla.. Pra sakin this will help them to get use how to handle bigger opponent kasi sa pinas malilit kasi ang mga player d2 though we got the talent individually, team play do works well..

sitting jamal sampson is a good idea because guys lik ballesteros and slaughter were given the chance to test their skills against bigger players..
i think the syrian team was just too big (although it can be countered with the quickness of gilas) and too quick particularly with their passing. you will really be amazed with their kind of team basketball..of course along with their "imports". it seemed to me that the gilas players were just a bit dizzy and confused with the syrian ball movement. as a personal layman's analysis,,,why not incorporate in their (gilas) training some kind of a HANDS TO EYES AND FEET COORDINATION using the sport of boxing or any other martial arts because these sports use a lot of this discipline...and there are so many good boxing trainers here in the philippines...maybe this will help...
...but still gilas showed their hearts...keep improving...go go go!!!

Si Slowter dapat iimprove ang offensive rebounding. Kapansin-pansin na twing tumira sa labas ang gilas tumatakbo na kaagad cya sa kabilang court. Siguro yun ang instruction sa kanya, pero palagay ko lang mas maganda kung subukan man lang nyang labanan yun mga higante sa rebound bago siya tumakbo sa depensa. Di ba?

Please use ur money wisely...walang silbi tong team nato,,,sayang tong idea na to to make our national team thru the gilas experiment....it is a brilliant idea pero sasayangin lng ng mga incompetent players na nakakawala ng gana kasi laging talo.....we cannot practice and teach tallent....This team has no tallent (except mark barroca)....without an import, this team is weaker than a team compose of players like magtulis, mente, hizon and the rest of ilo-ilo volts players that was sent to taipe few years back...hehehehe
PBA connection:
even though the past PBA selections had been unsuccesful, we cannot deny that the best tallent in this country are coming from that league....Gilas (SBP) and PBA please cooperate...Gilas cannot do that without PBA and PBA cannot do that without Gilas SBP...Please cooperate...

"developmental" team nga eh. dumadaan sa mga pagsubok, at sa bandang una, talagang matatalo, madalas. masakit. pero natututo. kung palagay nyo eh after one year na training dapat nagpapanalo na Gilas palagi, anu palagay nyo naman sa ibang teams? di na sila nag-iimprove? ngaun lang natin nasusubukan ang ganitong sistema ng national team. kaya nga may mga taong mahal ang basketbol na nagtayo ng ganitong sistema, eh para sa kinabukasan mas malakas at mas maganda na national team - training and performance. hinala ko, pag na-short ang SBP sa FIBA Asia at 2012 Olumpic goals nila, umaalingawngaw na ingay ng mga talangkang pinoy, baka isigaw nila na buwagin na ang SBP, walang kwenta... lahat ibabagsak nila. hindi po natatapos ang buhay at ang basketbol sa mga events na ito, marami pa susunod at mas marami pa makikinabang kung magtuloy-tuloy ang baskeball program na ito. Kailangan nila ang suporta natin. OK din naman criticisms, pero save nyo pagkatapos ng liga nila sa Dubai. tapos isulat nyo sa SBP, or kung sino man sa national team, para nagiging constructive criticisms nyo. malamang tama kayo, pero sa forum lang kayo madaldal. di naman pinagbabawalan mag-comment dito, nandiyan na yan at wala talaga magagawa para pigilan yan, yan na yung spirit of pinoy basketball fans. pero sana, sumuporta at tumulong tayo sa pagbuhat ng moral ng kapwa natin. negative criticisms, ibigay nyo diretso sa taong tinutukoy nyo para alam nya at aware sya, sa gayon may gawin sa para dun. palagay nyo ba babasahin pa nila lahat ng threads dito? busy sila at iisawan pa nila siguro mga comments sections kasi baka ma-demoralize pa sila. U guys who keep on insisting on sending PBA players in an international tournament you better shut up your mouth and support the Smart Gilas instead. Don't you realized that they were representing our country for 20 years at ano naman kaya ang kanila accomplishments in 20 years? Diba ala rin! Habang tumatagal paurong tayo, only in 1990 na maganda ang showing natin sa Asian games under Jawo but after that anong ipinakita ng mga magagaling nating PBA players? Bokya rin naman diba?
Let's be realistic ala talagang mangyayari sa atin if ala tayong pagkakaisa. If sinasabi niyo ala pag-asa ang gilas mas bulok naman ang mga taga PBA pagdating ng international games.

As much as the SBP wants to get Dillinger, Williams and Norwood, the question is kaya ba ng PBA ipahiram? Kaya stop wishing na makukuha sila at mas lalong mauubusan tau ng oras kung hihintayin pa natin sila. Ituloy lng ang exposure ng mga bata...maaring totoy pa sila ngayon pero after 2 years magugulang na din yang mga yan...Tingnan nyo nalng c Ballesteros at Barracael ngayon...talagang hindi na natatakot makipagbanggaan sa mga 7 footer na mga import ng Syria...ang laki ng puso.

A lot of chatters here aren't aware that the Smart Gilas Basketball Program really wanted to recruit PBA players but were turned-down by PBA,as a result, SBP opted to enlist amateur players,if you keep on insisting that we have a "weak" national team(i disagree) then blame PBA lol.

1st of all i'm still proud even if gilas unable to win their baptismal game in this tournament...they fought with heart & skill + team work...unfortunately, their opponent played basketball same way they do but d difference is that syrian team had d advantage in height...
now it is clear that heart & skill alone cannot win games all d time...our nt already lack d 4&5 position & if jamal fouls out or get injured like what happened,it add more to d problem...
i hope coach toroman will do some adjustments & sbp, if posible beef up their line up...

Hindi yan papayagan dahil image ng PBA ang masisira. Takot ang PBA sa GILAS. Pera pera ksi yan. Gustuhin man ni Williams o ni Taulava, hindi yan makakapalag kapag PBA na ang nagsabi na hindi pede.
Mag concentrate na lang tayong lahat kung paano ma iimprove ang GILAS. Tama yung iba, kailangan talaga natin ng isa pang backup import na center. Mukhang may problema talaga ito si Sampson.
