Coach Rajko Toroman Interview: (after the game)
Gilas is the youngest team here in the league & these are composed of collegiate players and no one expects us to be here on this level. We didn’t play with an import.. Baracael, he was one of our best player, he didn’t have enough exposure in the Philippines as much as he did in here....

...We want to be the number one in Asia then Number one in FIBA!”

Finals Result:
Mahram-Iran def. Al Riyadi of Lebanon, 85-67

Nice win.

  46. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 10:53 PM

astig..i've never been so excited sa pag antabay sa RP Team for a very long time...3rd Place, Fighting All Filipino againts bigger and heftier Arab Teams, with at least 3 imports is a BIG statement.

Now surely Mid East teams will be taking notice, were young, were hungry and well kick some asses!

Bilib din ako dahil di nawala sa focus ang mga bata kahit battle for third ang game...DI GAYA NUNG IBANG TEAM DIYAN NALAGLAG LANG E NAWALA NA GANA AT NAKUNTENTO SA 8 PLACE...makikita mo kung sino me puso at gustong lumaban sa bayan..

3rd Place by a young All Filipino amateur team is a slap in the face for the "professional players" wont you think...

    ..BEAT THAT PBA!....

  47. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 10:53 PM

    ------------

Don't insist in foreigner's to carry the team! Big guys? Fajardo,Chiu and Eman. They're still young and can be trained! Put the money on them not to imports w/o Filipino heart especially during playing.

a few months and 1 year to go pa..gilas will be quicker and better than south korea..maybe ang china mag struggle at sasakit ang ulo sa gilas..same thing din sa iran, jordan and lebanon..excellent program and best fundamental skills ng gilas team..someday this team can beat any pro ball club in the world.

  71. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 11:36 PM

TAMA ceasefire na muna comparing PBA and GILAS will not do any good, past is past.

  72. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 11:40 PM

CONGRATS sa lahat ng PINOYS!! Job well done Gilas, you deserve it guys. Great coaching Mr.Toroman. Even though Syria had 3 American imports and Gilas w/out Sampson we won by 9points. Ang galing talaga nila...Olympics here comes GILAS!

  92. Anonymous // January 24, 2010 1:43 AM

Congratulations to Smart Gilas, SBP, MVP, Noli, and Toroman.

mahina naman talaga ang Lebanon. they are just relying on their imports. nung nawala si Giles sa loob humina sila. d na na-maintain ung momentum. only their guards making the fight.
    mahinang team napapalakas nya.
one good break on Mac Baracael. underrated player back home. Look at what he become in International basketball. mas tinalo pa nya si Ababou (MVP sa UAAP). sa tingin ko talagang malayo mararating ng batang ito. look at his shooting percentage. 90% plus.

SA KILOS NI GREG SLAUGHTER WALANG pba COACH IPAPASOK SIYA SA THIRD QUARTER NG CRUCIAL GAME. SA GILAS NAGTIWALA SI TOROMAN NA IBABAD SIYA. SI EMAN DI KO NAKITA NA BINIGYAN NG MAHABANG PLAYING TIME. MARAMING BIG MEN NA NASIRA LANG SA PBA

  97. Anonymous // January 24, 2010 2:07 AM

Hopefully, he'l be there during the Autralian trip, Canadian Cruise, and USA trip ng Gilas.. Then, We'l be competitive in JOnes Cup and Asiad (which will serve as a nice tune-up in the FIBA Asia Championship)..

  98. Anonymous // January 24, 2010 2:14 AM

malayong mas magaling ang galaw ni Eman Samigue kaysa kay Slaughter.. sayang lang at nabubulok sa PBA. pambutas ng bangko. he is 6'9" kung sya na lng nasa slot ni Slaughter mas me pakinabang pa. kahit taga depensa lng.
    This is PHILIPPINE BASKETBALL POLITICS.
    it sucks.
but its up to Slaughter to improve himself. bata pa sya. kahit d sya umiskor. tigasan nya lng katawan at ung mobility.

  99. Anonymous // January 24, 2010 2:26 AM

  103. Anonymous // January 24, 2010 2:37 AM

It could hsve been a better ending, if we had beaten Al-Riyadi Lebanon in the semis-game. It was just hard-luck during the last minutes of that game, the breaks of the game just didnt fall on our side. But then again,we beat Syria to bag 3rd place, 3rd place finish is still not bad. The best reward is that RP Smart Gilas team has made a strong statement in this tournament that Philippine basketball is strong and will get even stronger to grab it's long lost glory and Supremacy in Asian basketball. mabuhay tayong lahat. medyo matanda na ata alexander. si EARL BARON NA LNG LAKAS NUN sa ilalim. siya nagpachampion sa red bull dati.
BIG inside scoring threat un. dami moves. may shooting pa.

    Hey Guys!

Congrats to all die hard fans out there!

We almost die here with my friends cheering for our team even if we're just watching it on T.V. (Dubai Sports 2 - Channel 331 {take note this!}. As if we were inside the venue, the atmosphere was like we are playing for championship! The feeling was very relieving it made us proud and motivated...

Just to make sure we will perform better in FIBA we need to get a legitimate 'Center', whether it is naturalized or not. In reality we're lacking of this position that's why we need to rely temporarily with foreigners. But of course it is better if it is a Filipino!

Comparing our team physically, our built and height are mismatched to other teams. It is understandable because our players are young not to mention the fact that it was rooted in our genes.

What I'm suggesting is Smart Gilas must get a "Nutritionist/Dietitian" and "Conditioning & Body Building Coach, like PACMAN has" to build them up and to toughen them without loosing their agility!

Smart if you're reading this if you already have professionals helping you regarding this then you're in the right direction. Just make sure that the ones that you have has a good program (scientifically, physically and mentally) to get you guys more stronger and focus!

Lastly, try to consistently compose yourselves especially in the dying minutes of the game. Sometimes you tend to be nervous during endgames that why you makes too many turnovers. Always try to hold your ground until the buzzer sounds. (Is there a "Nervous Management'?)

When you're up always use the clock and don't be shy to call timeouts when you don't know what to do especially in the crucial endgames!

    CHEERS! Inuman na!!!!

Congratulations Smart Gilas!!!! Noon pa sinabi ko na na height does not matter as long as you play as a team and play with a big heart.Yung RP team natin noon nanalo ng International Championships ang height ng centro 6"3( Caloy Loyzaga)tapos naging 6"5 / 6"6 (Gerry Codinera).Yung mga nagsasabi na height is might well you better think twice.MABUHAY ang GILAS !!

i think gilas should really get guys like eman and fajardo....cla na lng ang i-train natin kasi yung mga import nag-iinarte lng kung mag-laro...naliliitan yata sa sahod ng sbp...

eman will really blossom with gilas if he chooses to play with them....he is 6'9 with decent athleticism kaso nga lng medyo hilaw pa kung mag-laro dahil hndi nabibigyan ng exposure sa pba...i think he is still around 28 years old kaya malayo pa mararating nya in terms of improvement...c slaughter naman kailangan nyang ma-develop ang kanyang mid-range game...ndi sya uubra sa ilalim against yao ming or ehadadi kasi hndi wala syang mobility..magaling naman syang free throw shooter kaya dapat meron syang 15-17 foot jumpers...he will be a big help to gilas if he adds that to his arsenal...

GO PILIPINAS, GO GUIAO!

I remember a exhibition against the Standford Univ . Adrastus is playing for Duke Univ. He Out rebounded the Lopez twins.(who are now NBA players) but a certain incident really kick his chances to the team. then he ugly denied kyle singler during a practice.... I don't know kung saan na yung adrastus.. pero tiyak wala team siguru un... mag nag sasabi na nasa greece na nag lalaro nng pro ball..
pero grabe talaga yung adrastus... all defense hustle players... forget about his ugly jumpshot.

  130. Anonymous // January 24, 2010 10:33 AM

intimidating bigmen ? khit na di naturalize? anthony adrastus.. forget about de marcus cousins.
    walang legitimate pf..
    ballesteros has done his job
    we need to improve slowter.
    another naturalize player sana...okay na..
but internationally we reli on our guards...
tiu, casio, barroca, then baracael is the man..

  131. Anonymous // January 24, 2010 10:39 AM

    PG TIU, Casio , Barroca
    SG Baracael , Lassiter
SF Christian Standhardinger (sana , pero malabo)
    PF Aguilar
    C naturalize(player)

    okay na rin sina
ababou, ballesteros, slowter, Jazul coud be surprize addition. take note..mahilig si toroman sa PG.. so could mix up a lot...
    maybe chriz lutz( PG/SG)
wak na yung pringle.. (katulad din yan ni Adrastus my attitude problems)

  132. Anonymous // January 24, 2010 11:01 AM

congrat'z smart gilas!! you made our nation proud!

  133. Anonymous // January 24, 2010 11:19 AM

mas masarap manalo pag may dugong filipino yung player...

  134. Anonymous // January 24, 2010 11:20 AM

Great win. Sayang talaga na Fajardo, Maierhoffer at si Paul Lee nag back out.

Earl Barron is an NBA champion under Pat Riley and Erick Spoelstra...
Anton Adrastus... Very good Defensive player....
forget the ugly jumpshot.. but he's good in working under..
only problem thing about adrastus is attitude .!

Comment from a Filipino living in charlotte..
Anthony Adrastus is the guy...! the attitude is dennis rodman also... away kung away... kayang maga pag basag ulo yun..
that guy adrastus is a crazy guy...
Minsan na Describe sya ni coach K .. na "this guy is monster on rebounds".
isa pa asset ni adrastus eh yung very mobile mag laro sa ilalim at ...
    standing about 6'10...
And I think sa greece na ngayon nag lalaro si Adrastus... although his younger brother played College football here in US

Congratulations!!!! to Smart Gilas for winning the 3rd place at 21st Dubai invitational basketball tournament. We thanks and congratulates to the young warriors with big hearths, dedication to win and sacrifice for the country under the genius Mentor(Coach Toroman) who understant how to counter the weakness and to attack the opponents. As I watched follow the every games at the internet, the team need more ceiling to defense our opponent under the board. If Sampson is healthy we can win the semifinal game imagine CJ Giles who made the score under the board without him. We need big man like Eman, a healthy big import for naturalization. With our win results are as follows:
    1) The FIBA now believed how the Philippines is serious regarding our basketball program and the people behind the orgization are serious with their obligation in favor for our country's pride. We are on the right direction!!!.
    2) Regain the respect of our asian neighbor and in the world of Basketball.
    3) Olympic Dream and Beyond....- It is near to our target to play and qualify in 2012 olympic and beyond.... I hope the program will maintain/continue for long period of time.
    4) Prebably soon to have a Filipino player to play at the NBA rank.

Euroleague or NBA pwede.

This is an appeal to the PBA.

Please let go of some of your players eyed by RT, since it will probably be 3 players at the most. RT can see potentials on talents that he can train for positions within his system.

The longer they stay on your league the harder it is for Gilas to re-train this guys. Anyway, if your main objective is for business, imagine what boost it will give your league, if it is perceived as a supporter of the NT rather than an antagonist.

More power to PBA and Smart Gilas.

credit goes to coach Toroman for a job well done.He steered the international brand of game back to the Filipinos. of course there's the RP-5's fighting spirit which is best demonstrated here. So far so good. We still need a couple of big men who can muscle inside and take good perimeter shots. Slaughter and Ballesteros are shoo-ins. Perhaps we can enlist Gian Chiu and Cebu's Junmar Fajardo for more ceiling. Forget about some expensive ex-NBA players. If there should be one player coming from the PBA, then Kelly Williams is best all around player who can fit in well. - Anthony Chua / Cebu City

Some fans are mentioning Kelly Williams. I watched his Santa Lucia club play uninspiring basketball down the stretch in their knockout game just a few hours ago.

He may be the most physically gifted PBA player but I was disappointed that the former MVP didn't take control in the latter stages of a do or die match. He did play well the first three quarters and had little help (Marlou Aquino busted his tail.)

Having said all that I would still ask Kelly if he will suit up with Smart Gilas (I'm not an idiot!) Maybe Stanley Pringle can join Chris Lutz but I don't want to take away playing time from Chris Tiu. Baracael looks good but it would be nice to have a Mike Hrabak type guy with a little more size at the 3 (though Baracael is a better defender.)

It's obvious that Japeth needs an able big man next to him to be more effective. None of us know the situation with Jamal Sampson. We should not assume that he is motivated to represent a foreign country. I'd rather see a PBA veteran as the starting center in the Asian Games, along with Samigue Eman and use an import who has lived in the Philippines for a few years.

I live in Cleveland, Ohio. I've been hoping to see Gian Chiu play here for nearby Oberlin University. He has not played this season. Where is he?

mga tol,di ko napanood games ng gilas alam ko malaki n improvement nila, the fact is we are very happy on wat theyed done but we didnt think the fact that these arab teams played with three impoprts is failliar with their system??ayun ang tanong diba?
kya nga dapat ngaun plang mkakuha n ang gilas ng naturalized player that would stay for long and also love the country di ung nglalaro lng pra sa perang ibinabayad sa knila ng smart..may point ung nkaisip kay alexander beside the fact n may height and mobile sya..andun pti ung factor that he might love playing for our flag because he onced play here in our country,,tama n ang kelly williams or norwood or dilinger,,these kids are the best..just two big men and 1 height gifted sooting guard we can defeat iran national team,,or w\even china with yao ming,,trust me..coach rajko is a basketball genious!@!!!

in my own opinion, we should give this young pinoys the credit that they deserved. Lets rally behind these young athletes, GO GILAS!!!!!
