Dubai, UAE - Smart Gilas Pilipinas' hopes of a finals stint in the 21st Dubai International Basketball Championships ended Friday night as the Rajko Toroman-coached squad suffered a 79-76 semis loss to Lebanon's Al-Riyadi at the Al Ahli Sports Club.

Hoping to continue their giant-killing ways, after pulling off stunning wins against taller and heftier clubs from the Middle East and North Africa, the RP developmental squad will now face Syria's Al Jalaa in the battle for third place aiming to avenge its 90-76 loss against the Syrians on opening day.

Enjoying a 76-71 lead, entering the final two minutes of the contest, the Gilas crew failed to counter Al Riyadi's closing 8-0 run as Lebanon earned the second finals berth.

The scores:

AL RIYADI 79—Giles 29, Colson 20, El Turk 9, Mahmoud 8, Freije 7, Vogel 3, Ahmad 3

SMART GILAS 76—Baracael 23, Tiu 17, Casio 10, Barroca 8, Lassiter 7, Ballesteros 4, Aguilar 4, Ababou 3, Slaughter 0.

Quarters: 25-26; 40-38; 57-55; 79-76

Talo tyo ng 3 pts. Sayang lumamang tyo ng 9 pts last 4 mins, nahabol pa.

Guys malakas talaga ang SmartGilas... me panalo talaga itong team na to ...(di pa ganon kalakas si Sampson) they just prove it in this Middle East tour, believe me in a couple of months, and maybe with a new naturalized player, Phils. will become champs again.

ok lng yan the more we fail the more we learn from experiences..hindi lahat ng laro kailangan laging matalo dapat matuto sa pagkakabigo at pagkakamali..at least lumaban ang rp gilas with fighting heart..losing is not end of the battle but the beginning of road to success..go team philippines! kahit puro bad news at corrupt mostly ang nasa phil.government..let us show to the world na united tayong mga pilipino and we can work as a nation..

  43. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 1:59 AM

  44. killed // January 23, 2010 2:03 AM

Al Riyadi is actually stronger than the Labanese National team ! And yet Smart Gilas managed to keep it close and could have won the game if not for the put back of CJ Giles . .That shot changed the complexion of the game until the dying seconds.

today is the decade of filipino global invasion nagsimula kay pacquaio, apl ng black eyed peas, mga pinoy sa u tube at cnn hereos awardee at ngayon rp gilas..may pag-asa pa ang mga pilipino in terms of individual talent at skills para mag succeed sa boung mundo..dapat wag tayong umasa sa mga politicians at nasa gobyerno milya pa aabutin nila para tumino at wala silang pag-asa dahil nature na nila yan..go gilas ang the rest of filipinos all over the world..God bless!

  48. John // January 23, 2010 2:18 AM

    To MVP and SBP,

I am writing on behalf of the Filipino people especially to the Smart Gilas supporters. The team has been going into the right direction however we need 2 naturalized player to man the middle. One will alternate over the other as FIBA rules will only allow 1 naturalized player to play on the court. We need to get this in as much time as possible so they can pickup with the team and made huge impact in the organization. We do not want to see and hear further excuses and injury prone import such as CJ Giles and Jamal Samson. You need to get the best out of it since they will be getting as well a huge salary. Again, we thank you for your support on the Philippine Basketball especially for the national team and since we are almost there, let us make a move now to put our team to get into the top with the given limited amount of time.

    Regards,
    John

Great game! but a Heartbreaker for the Filipinos. Almost a win for the Smart-Gilas but axed by Giles-led Lebanon. Giles was aggressive in this game(he was booted out by smart gilas for poor behavior),that he drive every possesion. He's out to prove something. SG was leading by 9 points at 4min but missed consecutive shots and had a turnover that led to 12-0 run by the lebanese. Too bad, if SG won, weve seen the biggest upset of the tournament. Final score 79 -76

We lost the game against import infested lebanese national team, but we won the respect of almost all the crowd including other nationalities! Because the Philippine Team fought with all of their hearts for their country played without their import who refused to play! Go Gilas definitely next year you will be more mature and a stronger team. AGAIN YOU MADE ALL YOUR YOUR KABABAYANS PROUD!!! MABUHAY PILIPINAS!!!

there's nothing to be ashamed of our loss to Lebanon, they have 5 imports, smart gilas played all filipino as jamal sampson didn't play the game at all; SG fought really hard with a lot of heart in front of our kababayans here in dubai; we have to believe in Toroman's program; our ultimate goal is to qualify for the 2012 olympics and I think gilas is on the right direction. Congratulations to smart gilas!!!

  54. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 2:45 AM

Ok lang yan, this tournament was merely a training program for the SMART gilas boys. But they really did us proud . .Congratulations SMART gilas !

  56. erick reyes // January 23, 2010 2:54 AM

We lost to the import infested Lebanese Team. But we won the respect of many, because our Philippine Team gave their all played with their heart to make us (OFW) and our country proud! For me we're the winners because Riyadi team won all their matches with a double digit advantage on the scores against other teams they beat, but against our Philippine Team they could not even win more than 3 points. That's how committed our players are young but fought hard. Its like watching David and Goliath. Sampson refused to play when called by coach Toroman that's why he was forced to call in Slaughter who still lacks experienced maybe next time he will improve, but with the import better just leave him in the hotel and just watched the game on TV just a big waste of $$$.
Go Gilas. You made us all proud! Keep it up!

Wag namang sabihin na luck lang ung pagkapanalo nila nung ibang game nila..They're a really GREAT TEAM! and we should be proud na nakapasok pa nga sila nang semis!

GO GILAS!! panalo paren kau para samen!

  59. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 3:33 AM

that was one of the best games ever a Philippine National Team ever had. kahit sa mga nakaraang NT d nagawa ang na achieve ng Smart Gilas. I think walang error talagang sinuerte na lng ang lebanon sa end game at nakuha ni Giles ang rebound. that miss of Chris Tiu was crucial but it happens... kahit si Kobe Bryant in that situation and pressure maaari ding mag miss.
so far so good. i salute all the players. u exceeded our expectations. we were thinking pa nga na matatalo at tambak. dahil sa mis match sa 4 and 5 positions. but we proved na speed, good shooting and hassle defence can make a good fight. paano na lng kung healthy si Sampson? d sana nahirapan si Giles. mga guards sana ang nag dictate sa laro. at doon tyak lamang tayo.
GOOD LUCK FOR THE NEXT TOURNAMENTS.....MARAMING SALAMAT AT D NYO BINIGO MGA FANS SA DUBAI.WE R PROUD OF U.

sayang si Japeth. d nya alam ang role nya.i think he needs to improve his outside shooting kung yan ang posisyon nya. d sya pede panentro. he needs to improve his dribbling and penetration skills. at perimeter shooting. not necessarily 3 pts.
but all out suport pa rin ako sa Smart Gilas. very good performance.
need more improvements on some players.

Sir Noli Eala, Gilas fans deserve to know the status of Sampson. He's ok and learned quickly the system of Toroman but his excuses for not playing because of supposed injuries seems unacceptable. Is it a case of another attitude problem shown in different way or a real injury?

I think you owe to explain it to the fans. Makati Med's CEO is MVP so if Sampson requires medical attention the doctors should know if he is a useless import who will always be at sick bay or in a pre-determined time he could be rhabilitated. That way Gilas will not waste so much time in the team development and could scout for a healthy import if it needs to replace Sampson.

  65. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 4:13 AM

I'ved seen all the games of Gilas except on their 1st game w/ Syria. Gilas you have the respect of all the ofw's in UAE. We are proud of what you have shown and what you had accomplished. It was nice singing for the 1st & 2nd time the Philippine National Anthem during their quarterfinal match w/ Egypt and semi final w/Lebanon. It make us proud to be a Filipino.

  68. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 4:24 AM

Yun pa,wala tayong import(injured)but they managed to fight tooth and nail, basket after basket and they fought gallantly, WALANG PORMA, patay kung patay!!Please support our team.Wala ng TALANGKA MENTALITY.They are playing really well and I am sure RP Team will be a force to recon with during the FIBA Olympic qualifier. Almost a win yet we felt short, but this tournament especially this game provided lots of learnings for the Gilas players. Yes,there are still missing pieces, specially in the no 4 and 5 spots.)I still expect a lot from japeth, hope he can prove his game very soon. Mac Baracael is a revelation on both offense and defense. The troika of Tiu, casio and barroca makes a good rotation at the backcourt postions while Lassiter is a welcome addition to the team as he provides good defense at the 3 position. I still believe a healthy Jamal Sampson is a better alternative to CJ giles as he can blend well with our perimeter players with his big presence in the midddle. I just hope his injury is not that serious. Win or Loose, We Filipinos are proud of you, Smart Gilas. Aim High! Nice job coach Toroman. Philip guevarra - Dubai UAE

Guys, Although we lose to Lebanon team, I'm still proud of Smart Gilas the way they played, losing just 3 points to a depending champion. This is a clear signal to all Arab countries our team Gilas will be the reckoned to beat in the future games to come. This is a game of IMPORTS THREE VS TO ONE, ( unfortunately we do have just one who played limited time due to injury) Aside from this, Smart Gilas team IS STILL IN THE PROCESS OF LEARNING!!! Mabuhay to all Pilipinos!

And please look for a good naturalized player. BE PROUD PINOYS!

i am very proud of smart gilas, imagine, that's not phil vs lebanon, but it's phil vs usa, yung mga limang egoy lang naman ang halos naglaro sa buong game, nagkarattle rattle pa sa last 4 mins ng lumamang tayo ng siyam, halos maiyak na ang coach ng lebanon, sinuwerte lang sa put back ni giles.kung lebanon vs powerless yun, este powerade, malamang tambak na naman ng mahigit 40pts yun. i am so very proud of you smart gilas, kahit talo, taas noo ko kayong ipinagmalaki, hayaan nyo pag naging presidente ako ng ating bansa, puro basketball na lang ang aatupagin ko

  89. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 7:54 AM

    Ayos!

Pag nag-mature sina Ballesteros, Aguilar, Slaughter, Sison, Cawaling... Kayang kaya na yang LEBANON.

Ngayon we can see na ang SMART GILAS program ni SBP is working at ito ang tamang direksyon ng Philippine Basketball!

  90. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 8:39 AM

I think Smart Gilas exceeded expectations. I think their game with Lebanon is an indication of what the team can do. Frankly, I did not expect this from them. I am so proud of them. This is really a lesson game for us. Lesson learned that if we put a program then we could be the best in Asia like before. Lesson learned we need to be tough in the end game and we need to learn about lead management. Lesson learned we need to toughen up with defense. This team is actually a big man and an incredible shooter away from being a contender. If we are looking at Sampson well we have to look at his work ethic because we cannot afford a half-baked big man to defend inside. I think we should looking for Europeans this time to be our naturalized center. We failed thrice on finding the right naturalized center so it would not hurt if we look elsewhere. Also, we have to seriously consider Nate Johnson and Chris Lutz in the team if they can play as the go-to guys in the endgame which we sorely needs especially if we play our game which we will steal at the end game with speed and outside shooting then we ought to think about pulling these guys. I believe in Toroman because compared to Filipino coaches they are all pa-pogi. Sorry to our coaches they have a different orientation, which is more NBA. If this is the NBA then I think they will fit... but this is FIBA basketball and because of the PBA we forgot how to play international rules and the feel. The program of exposing our players internationally more is better. Actually I believe the Powerade team under Toroman with 2 to 3 years of international competition is competitive it is just a waste that the PBA is blocking our progress. Now we know what we can do it is just a matter of having two more pieces of the puzzle and complete it because 2011 is fast approaching and we need to have it now because we have some time to spend. Go Gilas, you are making the country proud. You actually accomplished your mission of getting into the semis... if you played in the finals that is actually a bonus.

  91. Boieph // January 23, 2010 8:48 AM

  94. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 9:18 AM

My only disappointment with this loss is that we won't get to see Gilas against Iran, a powerhouse asian team. (Win or lose against Iran, it would have been a great training experience for the young players)

But their overall performance shows that we are slowly getting there. No rush, take it one day at a time.

One thing though, I don't want them to make excuses about the loss. If they start saying "Ok lang, we lost kasi daming imports". it's a sign that they don't have enough competitive hunger.

They need to feel the pain and not accept that loss so they will challenged themselves to learn from it.

I'm sure the loss hurts them. When you have guys as competitive as Casio, Tiu, Baracael and Ballesteros on your team, you know they must feel bad about it. Which is fine. That's the right attitude needed to fight back and get better.

    Go Gilas!!!

  95. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 9:20 AM

Got to gave it to those guys (Gilas) they played their hearts out until the very end considering na bata pa ang core nitong mga players na to. Too bad for the Powerrade Team Pilipinas na halatang naglalaro ng walang puso at dedication ngayun palang milya milya na ang lamang ng Smart-Gilas sa kanila in terms of achievement at tapang sa paglalaro. Malaki pa iimprove nitong team na to with the right naturalized player at kung masusunod lang wishlist ni Toroman na kunin c Kelly Williams,Gabe Norwood at Jarred Dillinger with a naturalized center sure ako RP Olympic Drean is not a dreamboat away.

slaugther at fajardo kailangan namin ng bigman for inside threat at rebound at inside scoring. may nagsabi si japeth ay natural small forward 69 sya big man sya di kailangan bg pinas at pba ng 69 na small forward. ewan ko lang sa nba pero kailangan ng pinas ang inside dapat yun ang imaster nya. he got the speed sana sa inside nya ilagay his 69 pwede sya sa nba pag magaling sya sa insise at may perimeter shooting perimeter lang walang 3 points big man sya eh

Sabi nga nila, "if you're going down, you'd better go down fighting" at yun ang ginawa ng Gilas.

Good luck on your next game! Mabuhay kayo!

  103. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 10:49 AM

If there is anything good that came out of this loss, it is that we can be great again without a naturalized center.

Height advantage can be minimized by right timing and correct attitude in defense. Smart Gilas showed even at our height we can still excel offensively.

Our big men has to improve just like J Ballesteros, I hope Slauther, Rabeh, and Ramos can develop in time for the important tournament.

  109. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 11:55 AM

There was nothing to be ashamed of, Smart Gilas fought so hard without an import, played all filipino, if the breaks went on our side, we won the game, this is just an eye opener that we need a healthy and reliable center, when it comes to crunch time.

Lebanon played with 5 imports, its already a great achievement, and I believe Coach Toroman just measured the strenght of his team against middle eastern and very strong teams so as to shore up his line-up aiming for the FIBA Olympics.

God bless Smart Gilas RP team, you make the filipino nation very proud, whatever may be the result between your game agains Syria.

AT ISA PA, THE GAME WAS JUST FOR SHOW...IT WAS ALL STAR PBA GAMES SEASON. I WAS THERE NANOOD AKO.
Now still on Powerade PBA team, after that panalo..sumali sila sa Jones Cup..ano nangyari????? ung mga teams na tumambak sa kanila. Jordan at Iran. at Lebanon. Ang Jordan tinalo ng Samrt Gilas. Lebanonnahirapan with 4 imports.
    Now understand mo na????

To think all pinoy yung lumaban. I'm sure we will not be taken lightly by these Mideast/African squads next time. Continue to improve Smart Gilas, i wish you all the best. Sa mga genius dyan, kung ayaw nyo sa Smart Gilas then don't bother to check on their games or progress anymore.

I agree with those who posted their praises to the Smart Gilas National Team. This team is even more talented than any All-Star PBA National Teams in the past. This millionaires in the PBA don't really care for our country's pride they only care for their playing careers that's why they don't give their all whenever they represent our country in any international tournament.

  141. Anonymous // January 23, 2010 7:34 PM

Maybe we can hire imports for naturalization from Serbia. There are big seven footers there who can be scouted and invited to join our national team. And maybe they will not demand as much amount of compensation than do Americans. Another advantage is that they play FIBA brand of basketball.

Breaks of the game bros.. we lose because it was against us, otherwise it was a won ball game..

    Hats off to Smart Gilas!.

Never did i realize that we could assemble such a group of pure shooters, open, spot up, quick look, amazing how these amateur standouts are making those pressured shots, i'll not be surprised if we do good at the Asian games, i see this team shooting it out with the Korean and Chinese squads, to think that they've been playing together for barely a year only, such an accomplishment this tournament was, though some works are obviously required in our front line, good news is that this team is very young and looks very eager to learn and better themselves.

I lose interest in Phil. basketball when the "real" veterans retired, the batch of Jawo-Fernandez, soon after the batch of Patrimonio-Paras-Abbarientos,,these players played the game and when the call of duty to represent the country came, they played even harder and with balls. Now, we are left to contend with a bunch of cow dungs playing in the PBA, money players, enjoying the life of being popular, waiting to get laid on all sides, this is what PBA is all about now, and sadly this applies to both pure Pinoys and Fil-Ams, sure this is their bread and butter, so why bother assembling a half-committed all-star selection, we could have stopped this process long back, maybe after we finished second to China in that Jawo-Fernandez all star team.

But how our "real" veterans played before paled in comparison to how the Gilas played in this tournament, every single game their young bodies are all over the floor Barraquel, Casio, Ballesteros and this Lassiter, wow! a Fil-Am diving for the ball (interesting work this dude), specially Tiu who i believed is more banged up than the others, there was not a single game where he did not fall to the ground, in the game against Egypt, a second to go, a win in hand already, he dived to save a loose ball and got banged to the ground by this huge pyramid guy in front of our bench, i just need to cite this play cause this shows heart and pride bros, and with the rest of the team showing the same level of heart, pride and devotion to the game and our flag, i'd say let's us be ready, our time to shine in the international basketball scene is not within grasp but is in the horizon.

So much potential this team has shown, be more solid!

..and to our PBA talangka coaches, you better start licking Toroman's ass.

This Smart Gilas team brought back my interest to Philippine basketball, not the PBA but the international scene.

    Pinoy global!

No more saying we lost to the teams composed of imports and naturalized players. we should've think that we lose to a better team instead 'coz we're aiming olympics not only the asian level..

They can have as many 7 footers as much as they want. but the thing is we should've also elevate our standards, maximize the potential of the toroman's program and the availability of opportunities. ( naturalization and bringing in the best athlete we have)

I like the comment of AApps Dubai. Most of us have already lost interest in today's basketball especially in the international scene because of the humuliating defeats of our idolized PBA stars. It really was a good idea that we have this kind of program in internationa basketball. KUDOS TO COACH RAJIKO for bringing a new brand of basketball to the Philippines and for Manny Pangilinan for supporting this team. PBA right now stands for PROFIT BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION with Sonny " non-sense" Barrios as the commisioner. Good luck to SMART GILAS NATIONAL TEAM & PLEASE PREPARE WELL FOR THIS NOVEMBER ASIAN GAMES & NEXT YEARS ASIAN GAMES.

Count mer in as now as your one of die hard fans.
