MANILA, Philippines – Smart Gilas-Pilipinas is looking at a very hectic year ahead following their impressive finish in the 21st Dubai Invitational Championship.
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala said the Philippine developmental team will go through 80 international games for exposure against some of the world’s best ball clubs.
“Ang estimate ko po, we’ll be playing about almost 80 games, international games. That’s more than what the PBA gets,” said Eala.
In March, the Filipinos will head to Australia to face several pro-clubs from the National Basketball League. This will be followed by a trip to Serbia and Belgrade for a check on the improvement of their game.
Between April and May, the RP squad will do training in Las Vegas in the US before heading to Canada to face the Canadian national team. In May, Gilas will compete in the FIBA-Asia Champion’s Cup.
In June, they will fly back to Manila for a series of games with teams from Iran, New Zealand and possibly Japan and Korea. This will prepare the RP squad for the Jones Cup competition in July.
In August, the RP team will compete in the Fiba-Asia Stankovic Cup in Beirut, Lebanon before heading to the US again for a series of games against several NCAA teams. This will wind up their training program for the 16th Asian Games in November.
“That’s really some fantastic exposure for the national team,” said Eala.
The SBP chief said he hopes the Filipino players will be thoroughly prepared for the Asian Games after going through the 80-game schedule.
“Sana po lahat ng laro na ito, matututo ang players so by the time we go to Guangzhou in China, handang handa na ang Smart Gilas to play versus the top teams of the Asian championships,” he said.

Good luck smart gilas,,,hope u could get a replacement for sampson asap. if not,,then it would be good to look at some of the local big players to be trained if we could still have the time to do it or look for other european, south american and african countries for a big/tall player who can manned the center and be naturalized pinoy...wag na yong galing NBA ro US kasi mukhang masyadong nagpapa importante..
agila dabaw
FANTASTIC SANA MERON NA ULI TV STATION NA MAGPALABAS SA MGA LARO NILA KAHIT IN DELAYED BASIS NALANG SIGURADONG KIKITA ITO KASI MILYON MILYON ANG MGA FANS NANG BASKETBALL SA BANSA BEING OUR NATIONAL SPORTS. WITH THE IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE OF SMART GILAS IN DUBAI MAS LALONG MARAMING MANONOOD NITO KAHIT YONG MGA CRITICS NITO, PINAG TIYAGAAN KO NGA PINOOD SA INTERNET KAHIT PARANG PAGONG ANG PALABAS.HEHEEHEH
JUST AS I'VE SAID IN MY LAST COMMENT,..WHAT NOW??? WHERE'S THE BIG MAN WE NEED IN THE MIDDLE??..AFTER GILES AND SAMPSON, WHO'S NEXT..A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ASKING IF TAULAVA COULD FILL THE VOID. THE WAY I SEE IT "YES" BUT ONLY TO SOME EXTENT. I MEAN THAT'S IF ASI IS WILLING TO SHED OFF THOSE EXTRA POUNDS AND IF GETS BACK INTO THE WAY HE WAS DURING HE'S COME BACK FROM THE BID SUSPENSION. HE PLAYED BALL IN THE US AND CLEARLY, I WAS QUITE SURPRISED TO SEE HIM IN HIS FIRST COME BACK GAME,..HE WAS LEAN WITH MUSCLES RIPPING OUT,..BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY HE WAS VERY AGILE. THE ONLY TROUBLE IS ASI DOESNT HAVE A CONSISTENT MEDIUM RANGE JUMPER, WHICH IS A MUST FOR A BIG MAN IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION. AS FOR THE INCLUSION OF PBA PLAYERS,..HONESTLY, IT MAY WORK EITHER WAY,..IF INCLUDED, WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO HAVE SACRIFISED A LOT TO BE IN THE TEAM,..DEFINITELY THEY'S FEEL SHORT CHANGED,..ON THE OTHER HAND I THINK THEY'D BE OF GREAT HELP WIHT THE CALIBER THAT THEY HAVE..AS FOR A BIG MAN, WHY NOT TAKE A LOOK AT CHRIS ALEXANDER,..HE HAS THE HEIGHT, PLAYS GOOD INTERIOR DEFENSE, AGILE AND HAS A DESCENT OUTSIDE JUMPER FROM 15 FEET,...

RP faces reinforced Iran in opener
By Nelson Beltran - Philstar.com
Saturday, July 28, 2007
Mission Beijing gets under way for the SMC-Philippine team today when it plays Iran in Tokushima, Japan.
The Nationals go through eight games to realize their dream of gaining a Beijing Olympics stint next year, beginning with dangerous Iran on opening day of the 2007 FIBA-Asia men’s championship at the Tokushima Stadium.
Meanwhile, Eric Menk, Kelly Williams and Ren-Ren Ritualo complete the 12-man RP lineup that includes Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi, Danny Seigle, Jimmy Alapag, Jayjay Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa, Dondon Hontiveros, Kerby Raymundo and Fil-Am Gabe Norwood.
The RP-Iran game is set at 5 p.m. (Manila time) and will be aired live on RPN-9 with BTV to telecast the match at 7 p.m.
The Philippines clobbered Iran, 89-79, in their Jones Cup contest earlier this month but the Iranians are setting out for their Tokushima rematch reinforced by 7-foot-5 giant Jaber Rouzbahani Darrehsari.
Other new names in the Iranian lineup are Mohammad Reza, Ali Baheran, Javad Davari and Mahdi Kamrany. But Darrehsari is coach Chot Reyes’ biggest worry.
A 260-pounder with an eight-foot wingspan, the Iranian behemoth can grab the rim flat-footed and can dunk tipping only his toes. He attracted NBA scouts as he held Chinese superstar Yao Ming to only 15 points in the last FIBA-Asia Championship two years ago.
Iran has two other seven-footers in Hamed Ehadadi and Moosa Nabippor and other big men in Ali Doraghi, Hame Sohrabnajed, Oshin Sahakian, Pooya Tadjik and Adin Bahrami who all stand 6-foot-8 and above.
The Nationals, as in their Jones Cup duel, are likely to work on a fluid-motion game and try to use outside artillery against the Iranians.
The Philippines and Iran also figured in a three-quarter, tune-up game in Tehran during a break of the recent Champions Cup.
“We’re mauled in our tune-up game and I’m sure they’re not intimidated by our team ,” said coach Chot Reyes of the Iranians, bronze medalists in the 2006 Doha Asian Games.
“It’s anybody’s game in Tokushima,” said coach Rajko Toroman after his boys were beaten by the Filipinos in the Jones Cup.
Toroman, a Serbian, said he was impressed by the Nationals in the contest but lambasted the referees for what he felt a very poor officiating.
Finding themselves in a tough bracket, the Nationals are in must-win situation in all their games in the FIBA-Asia prelims.
They play defending champion China Monday and Jordan Tuesday.
Jordan is composed of Islam Abbaas, Zaid Abbaas, Zaid Al-Sous, Mousa Alawadi, Fadel Kamal Abdelrahman, Mousa Salah Bashir, Isa Beida Kamel, Osama Daghles, Ayman Idais, Enver Soobzokov and naturalized player Rasheim Ali Abd Wright.
The Chinese, meanwhile, are to get their final 12 from their pool made up of Qiang Bian, Chen Chen, Lei Chen, Liye Gu, Shuo Han, Ke Li, Bo Wang, Yong Wang, Qian Wu, Chao Yang, Ming Yang, Li Yi, Kai Zhang, Qingpeng Zhang and Songtao Zhang. The Chinese have a height average of 6-foot-8.
RP Team Final Line-Up:
Jimmy Alapag
Anthony Helterbrand
Mark Caguioa
Renren Ritualo
Donaldo Hontiveros
Gabe Norwood
Danny Seigle
Kelly Williams
Kerby Raymundo
Eric Menk
Michael Pennisi

jay solid PBA, solid Pilipinas!
Goodluck!
go gilas. pls lagay nyo c DEMARCUS COUSINS sa line up para d na kumuha na naturalize playre, filipino naman sya eh tapos 6'11 p. wth gian chiu, roni aguilar and junemar fajardo.
so All Filipino na talaga tayo?
No.1 prospect sya sa june 2010 draft. Tingin mo kahit fil-am sya, gusto nyang lumaro sa Gilas? Ipagpapalit ba nya yung chance of a lifetime na makapaglaro sa NBA just to play for Gilas? LOL!
mas maigi pa kung all-pinoy ang maglalaro. as much as possible kung kaya natin without the help of a naturalized player why not... mababatak ng husto ang Gilas sa schedule nila. wag sana pasukan ng hangin ang mga ulo nila, di tulad nung mga nasa kabilang liga. bilib ako sa training na nakukuha nila ngaun sana tuloy tuloy na program na ulit ito ng national team. wag tayo ningas kugon. lets support them. meron pa ba iba?
BAKIT MADALAS YUN MGA NAGKOCOMMENT AY INI-INSIST PA RIN NILA NA ISALI SOME OF THOSE PBA PLAYERS EH THEY HAVE NO PLACE ANYMORE FOR THEM IN OUR NATIONAL GILAS TEAM.
HINDI NA SILA KAILANGAN DAHIL MAY KAKAYAHAN AT MAGAGALING ANG MGA PLAYERS NI COACH TOROMAN. TOTAL SAPAT NA YUNG TRAININING PROGRAMS NG SBP (80 OVERSEAS GAMES)SA ATIN NATIONAL TEAM.
LALO LANG YAYABANG YAN PBA KUNG MAPAPASOKAN NG PBA PLAYERS ANG NATIONAL TEAM NI COACH TOROMAN.
asi is the temporary solution to our problem in the middle....he is big and strong enough to defend the post against the giants of our asian counterparts...though he is not as good as jamal sampson or as explosive like cj giles, he has the heart and passion to play for our national team which the two imports doesn't have...he can also be a good mentor to the other big guys of smart gilas....

GUSTONG MONG MALAMAN KUNG BAKET, DAHIL SI COACH TOROMAN MISMO NAGPARAMDAM SA MGA PLAYERS NA GUSTO NYA SA LINE UP NYA, BESIDES MAS MAGAGALING NAMAN TALAGA PLAYERS FROM PBA.
Ok tong gilas..

VERY WELL SAID.........
sana makuha nla sina eman at fajardo as soon as possible...sa lahat ng 6'9 sa pilipinas(except aguilar), itong dalawa lng ang may mobility at athleticism...di pa nga lng nahahasa ng todo...kung makakasama to sa 80 games nla this year,by 2011 fiba-asia mas magaling pa tong dalawang ito sa tandem ni pennisi at taulava....bilhin nyo na lng kontrata ni eman sa smb at tsaka bayaran nyo rin ang mga UC officials pati na manager nya pra palaruin nla si fajardo....

COACH TORO'S LINE UP S ASIAN GAMES:
BALESTEROS-6'7 C/PF
AGUILAR-6'9 SF/PF/C
WILLIAMS-6'7 SG/SF/PF
NORWOOD-6'6 SG/PF/SF
DILLINGER-6'5 SF/SG
BARACAEL-6'5 SG/SF
TIU-5'11 PG/SG
CASIO-5'11 PG/SG
SLOWTER-6'11 C
LASSITER-6'2 pg/SG/SF
LUTZ 6'4 SF/SG/PG
ABABOU-6'4 SG/SF....
ADVANTAGE OF THIS LINE UP,
1. RUNNING GAME ESP QUICKNESS
2.FULLCOURT/TRAPPING DEFENSE
3.TRIANGLE OFFENSE
4.CONSISTENT OUTSIDE SHOOTERS
5. MOST PLAYERS IN THE LINE UP CAN PLAY INSIDE ND OUTSIDE
RESERVES:
BAROCA-He is quick and a scorer...but unfortunately he will be guarded heavily by 6'4-6'7 guards...hnd xa pwd s International games...sorry 4 the 5'9 dnt be buwaya
hussaini-6'6 at center?cnxa hnd xa pwd dhil ang bagal tumalon at mga 7 ft klban...naghihintay lng na pasahan ng bola pra mka score...dominant lng s 6'2-6'4 centers xa...my weight problems
paul lee-sna irelease na 2 dhil prang skyrus baguio maglaro
fajardo-MAYBE his mind IS 2 join PBA...
Saka so ngayon, lubhang manipis ang line up nila.
Pero i like the effort nina Eala, MVP et al. Determinado silang ibalik tayo sa mapa ng Basketball.
Sana si Alexander the great na lang ang kunin ng Gilas...
For the ASIAD hindi lang si ASI ang Choice:
Yancy De Ocampo - 6'9"
Eman Samigue - 6'9"
Sonny Thoss - 6'8"
With 80 foreign games, WOW!
The three are good additions to Gilas at good opportunity din sa Pinoy bigmen.
Think about it:
if your one the coaches in a tournament, do you dare to say negative words to other teams? like when the tournament is finished do you dare to say team A or smart gilas team has no future...that they are bum...hehehe
in your opinion about the good impression our smart gilas had received from the coaches in the middle east, do you think they're sincere?
...opinion please and explain why....hahehahe
-BONEL CABATU
In the spirit of Sportmanship.
One must be sincere.

Hello?!
If you cant get close to LEBANON by a single DIGIT deficit.
Isa lang ibig sabihin nun.
Magaling ang TEAM na yun.
LEBANON has been consistent sa FIBA.
Consistently strong sila.
LEBANON has been consistent in being one of the BEST in ASIA.

if you know history, then put also an article about PBA Powerade Fiba Asia Champs....i think what you are talking about was a 12-year old article which will not help in today's kind of tournaments...you should put how they performed (their place) at that time(2007)...di ba 9th place lang...ginamit mo sana utak mo sa pag analyze ng mga pangyayari before ka nag post.
With the results that Gilas have playing with a smaller team without a 100% naturalized player in this tournament, Do you think, if you are a coach from the other teams you will say anything negative about this team? Bonel Cabatu, do you honestly believe that a coach will say that this team is a bum.
Now that they have seen the performance of Gilas do you believe that they dont deserve a good impression from opposing coaches and for them to do it is insincere?
Think about it Bonel Cabatu. hohohoho
c'mon guys dpat khit cno nsa team bsta deserving at my potential na 2long sa team pro o amateur e dpat no bad comments na.. this is our team..
cgro nainis lang kau sa last stint ng pilipinas under coach guiao(ako din e maling players at maling coachig.hehe)pero dpat wag nio na isama pt ung mahal ntin na 2002 and 2007 team..
aminin nten n nsa pba prn ang best players ng bansa and some of their players e capable naman maglaro internationally.ngaun, kung ipapahiram sila at kung gs2 ng gilas e d good... 4 sure makakatulong.. dun sa nagsasabi na kawawa ibang player ng gilas na matatanggal e gnun tlga, kelangan my mag sacrifice for the sake of the team lalo n sa pananaw ko e my iba naman talagang player na hindi p pwede sa international competition.. tama????
For gilas staff,we need a naturalized player.. kung magelelend ang pba ng mga players kunin nio kng hindi ok lang din..
For PBA,sana mag upgrade kau ng liga nio para hindi nasasawa fans zenyo like( more teams, no height limit ang import, baguhin sched para pag off season e pwede sa national team ang ibang players, etc. )

the likes of:
1.)Samigue Eman 6'9
2.)Jay-ar Reyes 6'9
3.)Greg Slaugther 6'11
4.)Junmar Fajardo 6'9
marami pah jan sayang naman kce
nah meron naman mga potentials dito
kulang nah e.dvelop.
According to an article that I've read before, Coach Toroman said that he will not accept the job unless we naturalized a Center.
And it is true, tried and tested na ang mga Center natin. Di talaga pwede as international game. Di naman palaging puro "Puso" lng. Height is might parin...
Cno b pwede natin iharap sa mga mabibilis and bulky na 6"11 and 7'0 footers ng ibang bansa sa asian games and FIBA. I believe Asi will only be a liability; he's not that good anymore.
If we plan to play a European style of basketball in which the whole team is more involve, I believe we whould get an import from Europe instead of the US.
