DUBAI — Smart Gilas of the Philippines stunned highly-favored Zain of Jordan, 85-82, for a second straight win in the 21st Dubai International Tournament at the Al Ahli Club here.

Jason Ballesteros held his ground against the taller Jordanians, who played with four American imports, including naturalized player Rasheim Wright, while the rest of the RP dribblers sizzled from the outside.

Gilas fired 11 three-pointers, five of them from Chris Tiu and three courtesy of Mac Baracael, who spearheaded the Nationals' attack for a 19-10 advantage.

Wright and Sam Daghlas conspired for Zain to keep pace but the 6-foot-7 Ballesteros scored eight straight points while battling seven-footer Aman Idais and 6-foot-10 Ashante Johnson underneath the rim to give Gilas a 61-47 lead.

Zain is composed of players from the Jordan national team with four American imports. With the way we are playing, I believe we can be competitive with the best teams in Asia,'' said RP coach Rajko Toroman.

It marked the first time the RP team defeated Jordan in an international tournament since the 2007 Fiba-Asia Championship.

Coach Chot Reyes and his PBA-backed RP team lost to Jordan in the qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Another PBA selection mentored by Yeng Guiao lost twice to the same Jordan squad in the Jones Cup and 2009 Fiba-Asia Championship.

Gilas, which led from start to finish, continued to put on the heat with Japeth Aguilar, Mark Barroca, JVee Casio and JR Cawaling shooting splendidly from the perimeter.

Wright, Zain's leading scorer who exploded for 32 points against An Nasr the other night, sprained his left foot just a minute gone by in the fourth.

But it didn't stop the Jordanians from mounting a comeback as Daghlas nailed three triples, Ayman Idais scored on an undergoal stab and Damien Cantrell converted a put-back to keep it close, 76-79, with two minutes left.

Gilas reinforcement Jamal Sampson, who was used sparingly due to an injured left knee, finished off the Jordanians after completing a three-point play, 82-76, 48.9 second to go.

The Scores:

SMART GILAS 85 — Tiu 17, Ballesteros 12, Baracael 12, Barroca 12, Aguilar 9, Sampson 9, Casio 8, Cawaling 5, Lassiter 1, Ababou 0.

ZAIN 82 — Daghlas 19, Wright 16, Johnson 15, Dais 12, Cantrell 10, Soobzokov 10.

Quarterscores: 19-17; 44-37; 66-56; 85-82

  43. Anonymous // January 17, 2010 11:17 PM

    Ponder on this....

Jordan VS Powerrade Team = Jordan Win

Jordan VS Smart Gilas = Gilas Win

Smart Gilas VS (Ordinary PBA Team w/o import) = Gilas Never Wins with BEARING games

Jordan VS Gilas in FIBA....result? heheheh You guess specially if it matters most not an exibition or tune up tournaments....

2012 LONDON HERE WE COME!

TAKE NOTE: THIS TEAM HAs ONLY ONE IMPORT WHEN THEY BEAT THE RP POWERADE TEAM BY 50 fRIGGIN points BUT NOW THEY DO HAVE 4 IMPorTS BUT STILL GilaS MANAGE TO KEEP THE JORDANIAN AWAY FROM THEM and PROVE THAT THEY HAVE THE HEART TO BEAT ANYONE ELSE WE HAVE 2 MORE YEARS TO PREPAREE AND BY THAT TEAM WE"LL BE REAdY!

Wright was injured in the fourth quarter and only the broken play that was converted by Sampson won it for smart gilas.it could have been a different result kung andon si wright until the end.still a nice win,no matter what.cris tiu, best player of the game

  80. Anonymous // January 18, 2010 12:33 AM

Wright was injured in the 4th quarter, thats why he was not able to help jordan during the last minutes. Sampson was only lucky for getting the ball underneath the basket that won it for Gilas. I was there...

  81. Anonymous // January 18, 2010 12:39 AM

Best player si Tiu. dati wala ako bilib but now i realized why he is put in the team. kung si Caidic at Ritualo mga shooters.panis sila. ito si Chris iba d lng shooting, he can pass, dribble and penetrate at d natatakot makipag rambolan sa bola. i salute Mr. Noli E. at Coach Toroman.
Casio and Barocca were amazing today. at least Barroca redeemed himself for the past 2 games na nag kalat sya. today both guys were so excellent, penetrating when the shooters are checked.
Pilay pa import at occasional lng ginamit. what more if healthy ang import, pero mas ok pa sana kung me kapalitan ang centro. doon sila hirap. si Ballesteros halos d mailabas sya lng pede. si Slaughter bangko. no use.
Baracael is superb in three points. galengggg.

  82. Anonymous // January 18, 2010 12:41 AM

men cannot be measure by head to foot, they can be measured from head to head pointing the edge of thier foreheads...... kayo yun gilasss.....

  83. Anonymous // January 18, 2010 12:43 AM

nainjured si Wright...OK pero patas lng. injured din si Sampson. all the way.. we needed him the most. hirap si Ballesteros. pero pusong pinoy kahit undersized. laban talaga.
but the key of the win is good passing, speed, penetration with quick pass to the open man. good shooring. kahit sino pede tumira. YAN ANG WALA SA PBA SYSTEM. AND THATS THE REASON WHY WE NEVER MADE IT. NOW MAKIKITA MO NA IBA NA ANG NATIONAL TEAM NATIN. they should continue their training overseas and not playing with pinoy teams. NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY THIS TEAM HAVE NO LOWPOST PLAYER EXCEPT SAMPSON. sa international basketball shooting and ball movement is the factor. not power plays.

consistent players are : Aguilar, Baracael, Ballesteros, Casio and Lassiter, Chris Tiu very good this 2 previous wins. that is wat the team needs, ung deadly shooter at nagawa nya. Barroca naman, well today he redeemed himself, when Casio was starting slow,he provided the energy and he was good.
I changed my mind on the two PG. now i realized alam ni Coach ang ginagawa nya when he selected them.
    Salute!!!!!!!!!

napanood ko po ang laban ng live dito sa al ahli sports club dubai, bibilib kayo sa team effort na ipinakita ng lahat even ballesteros fought hard against the big guys of jordan, smart gilas is for real na talaga

  90. Anonymous // January 18, 2010 1:05 AM

  91. Long Beach Jackrabbit // January 18, 2010 1:07 AM

Alexander yung import nang Ginebra ay a good replacement at saka banger sa loob. Plus Lutz completo na ang team

  92. Anonymous // January 18, 2010 1:11 AM

The best ang ball movement ang ganda tingnan. kahit cno may license to shoot from outside...very entertaining ang laro...keep up the good work guys. malayo mararating nyo.

Sa mga Alimango dyan. (Tahimik kayo ah?)
You can say na-injured si Wright o swerte lang si Sampson:

Pero truth is, Jordan has 5 Americans (yes, 5 american-born players) sa line-up nila at, ...

Caidic and Ritualo are good shooters:
Pero pang Point Guard ang Height nila.
Tiu is a good shooter comparable kay Caidic and Ritualo (Pero iba pa rin si Caidic, incendiary si Caidic).
But the good thing kay Tiu ay pang Point Guard ang height nya, at Point Guard talaga laro nya.

Chris tiu best palyer of the game? aybe kasi siya ang may pinakamahabang playing time but for me it should be Ballesteros or Baracael they the one who do the damage in 1st and 3rd quarters..
Jordanians felt the presence of Aguilar and Sampson...
Si Cawalinghave a good game also kaya lang hindi siya mapasahan ng bola kahit maliit na siya ay open..
Si Barocca and Casio not good in offense pero bawi sila sa hustle D as in sumusubsob para lang makuha ang bola...and Ababou???sayang si MVP may bulak sa ilong sana tinanggal nya yun at baka maupload pa sa facebook...

PAssing is good and shooters are great...

    Congrats..
Masaya toh bukas Lokal ang kalaban...may history na to eh..Good luck and watch out...please support this Team Pilipinas magdala din tayo ng props para naman may laban tayo tulad ng suporta ng syria..
    Mabuhay ang Pilipinas

they should first naturalize coach toroman. that's why we're now seeing good results this early because he's doing a good job! we'll need him for a long while. and for the local coaches against him, better shut up, go home and figure out how he did it. maybe you coaches need to drink more promil milk. mabuhay and pinoy!

  111. Anonymous // January 18, 2010 4:14 AM

Rasheim Wright played for most of the game. HE INJURED HIMSELF LATE IN THE 4TH QTR BECAUSE HE WAS TRYING REALLY HARD to get by our pesky guards Tiu, Lassiter and company.

You can't say its just luck because it is part of the game.

If you can remember he also dropped an average of 30 points in all of Jordan's lopsided wins against our very entertaining players from the Philippine Basketball Association.

Wow, until now I still can't belev dat dey beat zain team of jordan. imagine, dat team had d top players of deyr nat'l team plus 3 imports, actualy 4 imports nila counting raheem wright who is a naturalized cager. in fact even if gilas lose against d jordanians I wud stil be satisfied 4 as long as close yung laban. now i'm very convinced dis gilas team is on d rayt track. & I expect dat dis team wil get even stronger in a few months. I tink dis team wil be a tough nut 2 crack in d jones cup dis coming july as well as in d asian games dis november

This win is a good indication, pero matalo man ang Gilas sa mga games dito we just hope na they do get their lessons for the more important competitions later on. In short let us not loose track of the objectives dito, TO LEARN, we believe that is what Gilas is achieving . . .

  127. Anonymous // January 18, 2010 8:46 AM

What an accomplishment for Gilas. Ano ang masasabi mo Coach Yeng?

Congratulations Gilas! this just shows that individual talent is not the main key in winning games, but the heart... Powerade team had the talent and experience but they don't have much heart. I'm not saying they are not proud to be of service to our country, some are. but they are already established players in the PBA thus have not much to lose even if they get defeated during the tournaments they join.

The SMART Gilas team Pilipinas players on the other hand are still just blooming players about to start their careers. They have nothing much, except the fact that they're playing for their country, and this spells the difference. Fighting with only the pride of the country on the table gives these players the heart to win...

Congratulations Smart Gilas. Win or lose, I believe in you. stay focused and never lose your love for the country!

Gilas will find it hard to win against a PBA team in a PBA game with PBA refs..

And besides, hnd nmn nila goal manalo sa PBA games.. Training lang nila un.. Biruin niu, 2ND OLDEST PROFESSIONAL LEAGUE SA MUNDO, TRAINING GROUND LANG NG GILAS!;p but still, PBA can still help the NT.. By lending some players.. Williams or Norwood would be a great help..

actually, this long-term program approach initiated by SVP is not new. remember the Northern Cement days of the 80's? Cojuangco and Ron Jacobs started it all. We were ahead of the pack then...when it comes to the neutralization procedure of the FIBA, Still, Moore and Engelland..and NC excelled in the PBA for quite sometime, champions of the Jones Cup. we were feared by these Asian countries bacause of Caidic and others. but when martial law was declared, those 'myopic demigods' of the extinct BAP dissolved the team and went back to its old ways and bad habits - forming nat'l teams handpicked from the PBA within 3-6mos. and where we now? the favorite whipping boys and laughing stock of the whole of asia!!! Toroman fits to a T bcoz' he is europian and it is in Europe where the best amateurs players can be found playing amateur rules in a 'professional' league, the Euro League! give them enough time and the rest of Asia will be awakened to see the rebirth of Philippine basketball. need i say more?

Jordan's scoring by quarters are as follows 17, 20, 19,& 26. Fortunately it was a good offensive night for Gilas, the per quarter scores shows that Jordan was able to solve and adjust to the defense of Gilas in the fourth.

Nice work for the coaching staff of Gilas, but there is still room for improvement and it will not come from PBA star infusion.

Congrats ! and keep on improving.

PBA is the league of the past.. Smart Gilas is Philippine Basketball's future!!!

Congrats at Good Luck mamayang gabi

It was after the EDSA revolt that the team disbanded. I think we ought to be fair with our observations regardless of our political views.

Nice win!! Zain is a good club. All their starters played for American colleges, including their Russian guy. 6'9" Ashante Johnson played for the University of Kansas.

And Jamal Sampson played for Zain club a couple of years ago (alongside Rasheim Wright and Nate Johnson.)

The best place finish of a PBA backed national basketball team was in Beijing Asian Games in October 1990 . The R. Jaworski coached team bagged the silver medal in the finals losing to host China by about 14 points.

The Northern Consolidated-RP team was formed in the dying years of Marcos rule. Martial Law was lifted 1981. They captured the ABC Championship in 1985, the last time RP held supreme in Asia (it is called FIBA Asia). It was already laden with naturalized players led by the hot shooting Chip Engelland.

At one point, NC was feared in Asia. There was a time that they lost by a mere 3 points to a top Brazilian ball club when our dear RP represented Asia in the World Club Basketball tournament held in Spain. The team was disbanded after the 1985 ABC tilt later that year and shortly before the 1986 People Power Revolt.

With the new development, I hope Gilas would surpass NCC's achievements. NCC trounced PBA Teams into pieces in capturing a Championship despite being a guest team.

nagtataka ako last game nila against purefoods tambak sila 99 81 yata yun .. at yung mga games nila dito against pba teams puro tambak bakit dito ang galing naman nila ... doon mo makikita na may problema ang officiating sa pba layo yata dito sa international tournament kung ako sa kanila wag na sila magtune up games sa mga pba teams more international tournaments gaya sa europe at magcompete sa mga top national teams gaya ng spain, serbia, greece argentina, russia .....marami pa sila matututunan doon

Nice, i'm happy for Smart Gilas, win or lose I do believe we will be competitive on FIBA Asia qualifying and not be smothered like Powerade team. I just hope Sampson will be 100% healthy and i hope PBA and Sta Lucia will be patriotic to lend Kelly Williams who is in Coach T, wish list. He will be a big help in rebounding , defense, fast break plays and hustles.

Let us pray for this team and from the way I see them play that they are willing to dive for the ball or tip the ball for a rebound against taller guys, i do believe we can make it.

By the way Junmar Fajardo is held hostage by his pro-BAP school and his pro-BAP mentor Mon Fernandez. Her mother already plead for help. I hope Smart Gilas will help to get him out of there hands.

They want to make money on him by letting him play to PBA instead even if his skills is not complete. He will just turn out like Eman.

I hope MVP if you read this message, please get Junmar Fajardo at all cost for your Smart Gilas RP Team, he is tall at 6'10" bulky, quick, agile and most especially, pure filipino, he is our pride.

If Coach Toroman trains him, he will tremendously improve, and be of good help to our RP team, why not look for an import, actually an import is really needed, for we have talents that can be develop where loyalty is unquestionable.

Maybe you can get the help of the government in forcing UC to lend Fajardo, I believe you have some friends from the government as your name were mentioned as likely VP of Gibo.

Please forward this message to MVP or N. Eala.
