Smart Gilas 5 to go all-Filipino in Asiad?

MANILA, Philippines - Smart Gilas Pilipinas may just end up playing all-Filipino in this year’s Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala yesterday said Smart Gilas might play without a naturalized player in the Asiad after team officials decided to drop top prospect Jamal Sampson from the roster.

UPDATE:
Gilas part ways with naturalized prospect Samspon (click here)

Well, that’s very possible, it’s actually possible,” said Eala at weekly PSA Forum at Shakey’s UN Ave. in Manila.

“But we will still try to see how we can get this big man come up and play immediately for the Asian Games, that’s why the choice had to be made with Jamal and now a new choice if we are to make a change,” Eala said.

He added that the injury-plagued Sampson proved to be a big disappointment during the team’s gulf trip in Doha, Qatar and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Seriously there is no one yet, that’s how serious we are on Jamal. We thought he was the one, fortunately the trip to Dubai proved that he’s not,” said Eala.

We’ve asked again our scouts but I think this time maybe coach Rajko (Toroman) might help me look up some players, it might be better for coach Rajko to actually scout so that he can really have a first hand say who this guy would be,” Eala said.

With time running out for the team, Eala said that Toroman can go to the US or maybe in the other tournaments outside the US to look for prospects.

Toroman also voiced out his disappointment over Sampson, who sat out in some crucial Team RP games in the 21st Dubai Invitational where Smart Gilas finished a strong third.

Everybody was very disappointed with Jamal Sampson. Jamal is a good player, he is excellent for our team, strong, tall, good rebounder, exactly what we need. But he was always injured,” said Toroman.

I’m just talking about sacrificing for the team and how somebody can handle the pain because if you can’t handle the pain, you will never play in big games and can’t contribute in the team,” he said.

Meanwhile, Smart Gilas is scheduled to play in Australia against teams from the National Basketball League, before flying to Belgrade, Serbia in early April for another training then in the US and Canada from late April to early May to play some pick up games in Las Vegas and against collegiate teams plus a possibly pair of matches with Canadian national team in Vancouver.

From there, Smart Gilas will see action in the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup – the same tournament where it finished fifth in Jakarta, Indonesia last year – in Doha, then play some exhibition games with New Zealand, reigning Asian champion Iran and either Japan or Korea in Manila, the Jones Cup in Chinese Taipei in July and the FIBA-Asia Stankovic Cup in Beirut, Lebanon in August.

The team will fly again to the US to play NCAA Division I schools in October before competing in the Asian Games.

It’s going to be a very hectic year, our estimate is that we will be playing about 80 international games this year and I think its more than what PBA teams get and really it’s a fantastic exposure for Smart Gilas,” said Eala.

It was a positive experience and it’s a big boost for the morale of the team,” said skipper Chris Tiu. “I’ve realized our team have improved, we were able to adapt to the system of coach Rajko. It was tough in the beginning but we’ve learned to perfect it a little more now.”

Mas astig if mag-ka-medal sa Asian Games
    tapos ALL-FILIPINO Mode ang GILAS.
Kahit BRONZE ay OK na sa ASIAN GAMES,
Yun na ang LEVEL ng All-PROs na CENTENNIAL TEAM ni Coach Tim Cone.

Hindi naman ASIAN GAMES ang GOAL:
    Kundi OLYMPICS.

Hanep sa schedule for sure this Gilas squad will learn more from this upcoming international games. I saw them in Dubai and I really appreciate there system passing, screen and moving of player's without the ball. Go gilas beat the tough team in asia I know you can do it. Now middle east gain respect from Philippines after that 21st Dubai tournament, We are still no. 1 in Asia and a team to beat in FIBA asia. I am no. 1 fans of Smart Gilas from Muscat Oman.

  12. Anonymous // January 27, 2010 6:51 PM

good exposure for rp developmental team and lot of tune-up games..ok na rin yung all pinoy sa asiad para masubukan ang strength and weaknesses ng line-up ng rp gilas.

  13. Niknok // January 27, 2010 6:55 PM

  14. Anonymous // January 27, 2010 6:58 PM

Ayon sa FIBA rule, allowed bawat bansa ng 1 naturalized player to beef up under sized team like Phils.

Problema lng, language barrier bka hndi marunong mag English. He! he!

mas masaya pag all filipino. i think its a good decision. i think naturalize are steroid. hayaan nyo middle east team ala nmn hilig ata yang mga yan gusto lng manalo. tayo ay bayan ng superstars! tenorio for pg for shooting. tim cone coaching staff. alaska team for scout. go go go!

  22. Niknok // January 27, 2010 8:21 PM

Basta trainable, role player at coachable.

Diba coach yeng?

too bad Asi Taulava didn't live in the same generation as the gilas team..
thats bad... Taulava is not the answer .. philippines need a young core.thats what they are doing... then they need a naturalize center who can dominate the boards...
smart gilas bloodlife depends on Trio Guards of Casio,Tiu,Barroca then Mac Baracael. they need somebody who could boost the frontcourt of tean,, jafet aguilar is not a part of a bloodlife but he boost the team with ceiling and with his skill..
Find a Naturalize player who will be committed playing to the team

wait lng kyo! ang iran n naglaro s dubai mron silang former NBA player n si Loren Woods. magaling yun nung ncaa, halos top pick dn cya nung dinraft yun.. baka kunin nila yun at gawin naturalized citizen nila. panibagong threat n nmn yun. small forward laro nun pero 7'1 ang height nun.. kaya dapat ngyon p lng kumuha n ng naturalized center, kunin ang mga additional foreign-based at PBA-based players para asap makapag-gel n ang team. para magkaalaman kagad kung cno ang gus2 tlga maglaro at takot maglaro.. c asi, williams at norwood sa tingin ko okei sila additional in terms of playing with heart. makikita nyo nmn s paglalaro nila ng foreign teams, talagang patayan kung patayan din sila.. williams & norwood are also good cutters sa play kaya perfect sila pang-alley oop halfcourt man o fastbreak..

why not try Mick pennissi , hes also a center , he could bang body with the rest of the group and as a bonus he could shoot from the outside. tsaka ang San Miguel over na sa personnel so taking out mick would not affect their performance.
as for ASI baka hndi ipahiram ng coke hes the only center they have eh.
getting mick to play with gilas while they are searching for an import .
or they also could try crisano. he has the guts and brawn , baka under the tutelage of coach rajko mag bloom cya
and maybe we could ask the help of Norwood , Kelly williams in scouting for our import remember this guys play for college teams in the US baka may mga kakilala pa cla na players that willing to play and live here like they do. ung friend ni gabe ok un the one that play as their 2nd import last year. suggestion lang po thks

RP faces reinforced Iran in opener
    By Nelson Beltran - Philstar.com
    Saturday, July 28, 2007

Mission Beijing gets under way for the SMC-Philippine team today when it plays Iran in Tokushima, Japan.

The Nationals go through eight games to realize their dream of gaining a Beijing Olympics stint next year, beginning with dangerous Iran on opening day of the 2007 FIBA-Asia men’s championship at the Tokushima Stadium.

Meanwhile, Eric Menk, Kelly Williams and Ren-Ren Ritualo complete the 12-man RP lineup that includes Asi Taulava, Mick Pennisi, Danny Seigle, Jimmy Alapag, Jayjay Helterbrand, Mark Caguioa, Dondon Hontiveros, Kerby Raymundo and Fil-Am Gabe Norwood.

The RP-Iran game is set at 5 p.m. (Manila time) and will be aired live on RPN-9 with BTV to telecast the match at 7 p.m.

The Philippines clobbered Iran, 89-79, in their Jones Cup contest earlier this month but the Iranians are setting out for their Tokushima rematchreinforced by 7-foot-5 giant Jaber Rouzbahani Darrehsari.

Other new names in the Iranian lineup are Mohammad Reza, Ali Baheran, Javad Davari and Mahdi Kamrany. But Darrehsari is coach Chot Reyes’ biggest worry.

A 260-pounder with an eight-foot wingspan, the Iranian behemoth can grab the rim flat-footed and can dunk tipping only his toes. He attracted NBA scouts as he held Chinese superstar Yao Ming to only 15 points in the last FIBA-Asia Championship two years ago.

Iran has two other seven-footers in Hamed Ehadadi and Moosa Nabippor and other big men in Ali Doraghi, Hame Sohrabnajed, Oshin Sahakian, Pooya Tadjik and Adin Bahrami who all stand 6-foot-8 and above.

The Nationals, as in their Jones Cup duel, are likely to work on a fluid-motion game and try to use outside artillery against the Iranians.

The Philippines and Iran also figured in a three-quarter, tune-up game in Tehran during a break of the recent Champions Cup.

“We’re mauled in our tune-up game and I’m sure they’re not intimidated by our team ,” said coach Chot Reyes of the Iranians, bronze medalists in the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

“It’s anybody’s game in Tokushima,” said coach Rajko Toroman after his boys were beaten by the Filipinos in the Jones Cup.

Toroman, a Serbian, said he was impressed by the Nationals in the contest but lambasted the referees for what he felt a very poor officiating.

Finding themselves in a tough bracket, the Nationals are in must-win situation in all their games in the FIBA-Asia prelims.

They play defending champion China Monday and Jordan Tuesday.

Jordan is composed of Islam Abbaas, Zaid Abbaas, Zaid Al-Sous, Mousa Alawadi, Fadel Kamal Abdelrahman, Mousa Salah Bashir, Isa Beida Kamel, Osama Daghles, Ayman Idais, Enver Soobzokov and naturalized player Rasheim Ali Abd Wright.

The Chinese, meanwhile, are to get their final 12 from their pool made up of Qiang Bian, Chen Chen, Lei Chen, Liye Gu, Shuo Han, Ke Li, Bo Wang, Yong Wang, Qian Wu, Chao Yang, Ming Yang, Li Yi, Kai Zhang, Qingpeng Zhang and Songtao Zhang. The Chinese have a height average of 6-foot-8.

    RP Team Final Line-Up:

    Jimmy Alapag
    Anthony Helterbrand
    Mark Caguioa
    Renren Ritualo
    Donaldo Hontiveros
    Gabe Norwood
    Danny Seigle
    Kelly Williams
    Kerby Raymundo
    Eric Menk
    Michael Pennisi
    Paul Asi Taulava

PBA players HANDS DOWN>>>

    @JayPBAsolid

Remember what 2008 Team USA did para maregain ang world basketball supremacy? Hiningi ni Colangelo sa mga players and teams na icommit ang mga tulad nina Bryant, James, Howard and Anthony for three years from 2006.

    tnx..

CHRIS ALEXANDER IS THE BEST CHOICE...TALL, AGILE, GOOD INTERIOR DEFENSE, DESCENT MEDIUM RANGE JUMPER..BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY...COACHABLE!!!!

query lang po..what's up with greg slaughter? Is he improving? He needs to get rid with his baby fats. If he can develop a Manny Pacman muscle, he can be a formidable center.
