As its problems in finding the right foreign reinforcement continue, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is again looking into the possibility of getting the services of some of the players from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) to beef up its core.
SBP executive director Noli Eala told the BusinessMirror on Thursday that Serbian coach Rajko Toroman is studying all options to make the national team more competitive, and one of the possible solutions is to seek assistance from the PBA.
“It is always an option to seek the best possible talent to make us win,” said Eala. “At the moment, we are happy with how the locals have developed and played.”
SBP is looking to sign up two PBA players to suit up for the Smart Gilas five, which saw action practically all-Filipino in the 21st Dubai International Basketball Tournament recently.
With American Jamal Sampson being fielded sparingly and even sitting out the team’s last two games due to what he claimed was a left-knee injury, the young members of the Philippine developmental team were left to carry the load but came up with a fine performance and finished third in the tough 10-team field.
Sampson, who earlier this week had been sent packing by the SBP, was the second American reinforcement hired by the Philippine squad after former Los Angeles Laker CJ Giles, who was also deemed unfit for the team.
The SBP will now continue to search for a player who could be naturalized in time for the 2011 International Basketball Federation (Fiba)-Asia Men’s Championship, a qualifier for the London Olympics the following year.
This means that Smart Gilas has to play all-Filipino in the coming Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in November.
“We will continue evaluating the team and decide as we progress if there will be a need for one or two more players, including from the pros or Fil-Ams,” said Eala.
Toroman earlier said he would like to have Sta. Lucia Realty’s Kelly Williams, Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine and Talk ‘N Text’s Jared Dillinger on his team but the SBP has yet to draft a formal request to the pro league.

For ASIAD, dahil hindi na aabot ang naturalized player, sa tingin ko kahit si Asi Taulava na lang. I like Dillinger, Norwood and Williams but if the goal is long term, we know those three won't be available forever. We need players who will be on the team LONG TERM.
Si Asi, stop gap habang wala pang pampalit but a naturalized center would be far better.
I hope they convince Junmar Fajardo and Chris Lutz instead. (Paul Lee, bilib ako dun pero habang ayaw niya, ok lang nandiyan naman sina Casio, Tiu at Barocca sa slot niya) Si Fajardo mas kailangan ng big men!

nice line up pero kung ako kaw d ko tatangalin si Lassiter, he palyed good in dubai. defence and offense. ok naman ang hassle defence nya. i think tangalin sa lineup mo si norwood. d sya masyado mataas ang percentage sa shooting. besides kelangan natin mga pure shooters at physical maglaro. Ababou although he ddn't show up in dubai, i believe this guy can deliver at anytime with an MVP heart that he has. at bata pa. we need to start a team young for future NT pa.

good day to you gentlemen
i am an RP team fanatic since 1990, i saw the ups and downs of RP basketball in the international competition,time has come that the road map to international redemption is now being wondefully crafted via the GILAS program " OUR PRESENT RP TEAM ". i am writing this open letter for your enlightenment regarding the plan of SG to top PBA players for reinforcement in the coming asian games in china.
there are only three things i would like to emphasize
I. REASON why the PBA should allow.
II. BENEFIT
III. CONSEQUENCE (+ AND - )
I. being a filipino it is our oligation to contribute for the benefit and welfare of our country , the sacrifice made buy our soldiers and policemen by giving their lives is worth emulating , they are sacrificing their lives for flag and country they are not afraid to die for it ; the pronouncement made by mr. pardo that the pba teams would be at a losing end if ever their players lent to the RP team will be injured is unpatriotic , the risk of injury is a pittance compared to the sacrifice made by the AFP / PNP personnel FOR FLAG and COUNTRY. as aptly stated by coach Rajko a serbian " this is not my team, this is not SBP's team , this is the RP TEAM "; as NINOY said the filipino is worth dying for , why afraid of injury, it can be healed, it can be rehabilitated ; it is part of the risk of defending the FLAG and COUNTRY.
II the benefit of allowing pba players to reinforce the SG program is boundless.
first,since these pba players are attached to their mother ballclubs in particular and pba in general, every time they will be mentioned in the international competition the ballclubs and the PBA are as well unwittingly advertised. second, it cannot be denied that the luster of the pba is dwendling due to its several setbacks in the international scene , this is your time to show to the world that pba players are not patsies given the proper coaching, exposures and trainings, that pba players can compete against the top players of the world in a high caliber contest. third , it will not only make your players better in terms of acquiring skills and latest basketball techniques but also it will make them a better person, in other words it will inure to the benefit of your league.
III Consequence

If the team will accomplish its mission the pba will be held as one of the heroes and gate receipts will go up as well as tv ratings. millions of filipinos around the world will be happy.if otherwise , at least you are there to help.

If you will not allow your players to participate/join the SG program if requested , and the team will either succeed or fail the PBA will die a natural death.

di sapatpara i add lng mga taga PBA na nabanggit. still strongly recommended is a legitimate 7 footer. matigas at mabilis. Fajardo and Slaughter d pa pede dumepena sa mga big man in asian basketball. even Asi mahihirapan maliit sya as 6'9" at mabagal na. pero pede sya reliever pag na foul trouble o injured ang centro.
To SBP:
If SBP is looking for a reliable Center, i believe Greg Monroe is the answer. He is young, athletic, good shooter, rebounder, great passer, ball handler...an all around player, this young player is currently on the top list of NBA scouts. I just hope SBP top honchos could see this video.

i think c williams,norwood,at taulava lng ang pwede sa smart gilas...i'm not saying na cla lng ang magagaling sa pba...it's just that they are the ones who are capable to fill in the holes of smart gilas....norwood and williams will boost up the SF position of gilas while taulava will solidify the middle habang wala pang import...pwede din sana c dillinger kaso madami ng SG ang Smart Gilas....Sa import ,pwede pa naman c chris alexander...he's still 30 years old...he's a legit 7-footer with a great mid-range game...he can also grab rebounds and can block shots...he's mobile kaya bagay sya sa laro ng gilas na up tempo style of playing...i hope sbp reads this one...

Ayos na ayos na mayroon Team Pilipinas sport news. Nadiskubre ko ito ng naghahanap ako ng latest news tungkol sa Smart Gilas campaign sa Dubai. Disappointed ako kay Q. Henson (who considers the walking encyclopedia ng sports na basketball ) kasi puro trivia ng mga irrelevant personal info ng mga retired basketball player ang isinusulat nya aside syempre sa usual PBA (boring)news update.
