Newly appointed Smart Gilas Pilipinas team manager Frankie Lim will leave for the United States tomorrow with the task of finding the right player that would address the team’s need for an inside presence.
“I will fly to the US on Monday to find the best big man available that would fit well to Smart Gilas,” said Lim, who was recently appointed by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas to manage the national team.
Upon arrival in the US, Lim said he would talk to SBP’s contacts to set up some tryouts and scrimmages before Smart Gilas’ Serbian coach Rajko Toroman arrives the following week.
“Coach Rajko will join me next week when everything’s already arranged because we want him to personally choose the right man for the job,” said Lim.
SBP executive director Noli Eala earlier said they would drop Jamal Sampson as naturalization candidate after the 6-foot-11 behemoth failed to meet expectations.
Sampson, who replaced RP’s original choice CJ Giles late last year, would have been the player SBP wanted naturalized but he was often injured in Smart Gilas’ Gulf trip.
Sampson was particularly impressive when Smart Gilas split its pair of exhibition games with the Qatar national team in Doha before settling for cameo roles in the import-laden 21st Dubai Invitational where RP finished a strong third.
Lim said he hopes they could find the right player in the 12-day US trip, which might include trips not just to LA but also to some East Coast basketball hotbeds.
If not, Lim said they might just bring in a player or two to the Philippines and let them try out for the position.
“If we can find the player right away, it would be better. If not, maybe we’ll just bring players here to try out. We will do all the things we can to find the right player,” he said.

Kailangan young at not less than 6'11" ang height strong low post defender, good rebounder & passer, shot blocker at excellent second chance shooter. Siyempre last but not the least healthy, good team player attitude willing to sacrifice and be naturalized filipino.

I THINK MR. LIM SHOULD BE A GOOD JUDGE OF CHARACTER BY NOW AFTER YEARS OF HANDLING A PBA TEAM AND LOOK FOR ATTITUDE FIRST THAN TALENT.
THERE ARE A LOT OF TALENTS OUT THERE IN THE STATES BUT LET'S FACE IT, A TALENTED NBA CALIBER PLAYER WILL BE MOTIVATED BY BIG BUCKS WITHOUT GUARANTEE OF DELIVERING THE GOODS NEEDED BY OUR NAT'L TEAM. WE'LL ALWAYS END UP WITH THE SHORT END OF THE STICK.
MR. LIM CAN LOOK FOR THE LEAST BASIC TALENTS FIRST LIKE REBOUNDING AND DEFENSIVE SKILLS. ANYWAY ALL GILAS NEEDS IS A ROLE PLAYER NOT A GO TO GUY.

Buti naman na-realize na ng SBP na kumuha ng naturalize player kaysa umasa sa PBA para matapos na ang issue.
Ang PBA players ay hind natin maasahan at hindi sila deserving mas priority pa nilang ipromote yun ball clubs nila kaysa magsilbi ng tapat para sa ating bandila at bayan.
Maliban, iba ang orientation ng laro nila mga larong one on one at larong komersyalismo.

i agree 2 american naturalize player plus look for tall fil-foreigner from europe,middle east,latin america,australia and africa..cympre dapat mataas ang basketball i.q nila and fast learner..kung sa pba at d2 lng sa pilipinas maghahanap ng player mahihirapan ang gilas..mas demanding kc ang homegrown talent at mahal ang bayad kaysa sa fil-for na nsa abroad..
Greg Monroe is a strong candidate. A 6'11" all- around player. He is more athletic and talented than CJ Giles and much younger too.

Hats off to the SBP, finally they realize that a BIG MAN is needed..forget the pba players,.they had their chance in the past tournaments,..and it showed that even as pros,..the were still no match against other countries..I live here in Spain, I for one can attest that with the caliber of players they have here in Europe, for the Philippines to become a world power in basketball..they'd need a bigger, stronger and more agile players. Also, forget an all filpino crew, an import is a must,.even Russia when it won the word championships had an import in their line up...coach P

and please never put PBA players on gilas..... they can't pay basketball...... real basketball..... all they do is act on the court as if they are so skill...... and all they play for is for money they can't risk their health becuase they will lose their career in the PBA.... they would rather lose in international games than their local game......
