It was supposed to be a no-bearing exhibition game but the Alaska Aces did not think so and played with intensity and resolve to trounce the Smart Gilas RP training team, 130-99, last Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Aces started strong and posted a 24-18 first quarter lead. They stepped on the gas in the second quarter to hike their lead to 20 points by halftime, 63-43.
Alaska coach Tim Cone said he impressed upon the players the importance of playing hard regardless of what team you are playing.
“We always play hard against any team. That has always been our creed. You come out and play hard every single time. Basketball is always about habits. You can’t just decide when to play hard. You have to play hard always. Otherwise you won’t be able to play hard at all when you need to,” said Cone.
Because the results of games against Smart Gilas do not count in the standings, the Aces kept their league best record of nine wins against a single loss. The 9-1 start is the best ever in franchise history surpassing the 8-1 opening run in the 1998 Commissioner’s Cup where the Aces eventually won the title.
Trailing Alaska are the San Miguel Beermen (9-2), the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings (7-3), the Talk n Text Tropang Texters (6-4), the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants (6-4), the Sta. Lucia Realtors (5-5), the Burger King Whopper (3-7), the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (3-7), Barako Bull (2-9) and the Coca-Cola Tigers (1-9).
The Alaska mentor said he tried to impress this philosophy upon his players. He said it doesn’t matter if it’s a championship game, a regular game or just a drill. The players should play hard.
“It doesn’t matter what team you are going play. It doesn’t matter whether it is San Miguel Beer or Ateneo or UST or if you’re playing your grandmother. You always have to play hard all the time,”
The Alaska mentor said he likes the attitude of his present batch of players.
“More than any other group that I’ve ever had, except for the group in the mid 90s this group believes in that creed, said Cone. “They work hard all the time even when they play in practices or drills. They’re a great practice team.”
Willie Miller scored a team-high 21 points to grab Player of the Game honors. He said coach Cone made sure that they would take the no-bearing game seriously.
“Kailangan talagang seryosohin dahil sinabi ito ni coach,” said Miller. “Susunod na kalaban namin ang San Miguel Beer pagkatapos ay Talk n Text. Walang mas magandang preparation sa dalawang game na iyon kungdi siryosohan ang laro against Smart Gilas.”
Cone admitted that he was wary of his team’s chances against the San Miguel Beermen.
“They put a lot of pressure on you to score on every possession, said Cone. “They have so many weapons and good players that it would be difficult to stop their offense. That puts a lot of pressure on our offense to deliver points.”
The RP team tried to come back by switching to man-to-man defense and pressuring the Alaska ball carrier. Cone countered by having Devance bring up the ball on offense. Japeth Aguilar tried to pressure Devance on defense but he was so slow and ungainly that Smart Gilas decided to stop pressuring the Alaska offense.
The Aces continued to pressure the Smart Gilas defense despite the big lead. Mark Borboran tapped the ball from Rabeh Al Hussaini, sprinted to the other end of the basketball court to score on a rim-rattling dunk. The Aces went on to hike their lead to 35 points, 117-82, with only 5:13 to go in the game.
The scores:
ALASKA 130 - Willie Miller 21, Rey Hugnatan 18, Sonny Thoss 15, Joe Devance 14, Larry Fonacier 13, LA Tenorio 10, Mark Borboran 10, Jeff Cariaso 9, John Ferriols 7, Tony Dela Cruz 6, Mike Burstcher 5, Kelvin Dela Pena 2.
GILAS 99 - JV Casio 24, Rabeh Al Hussaini 21, Mark Barracael 16, Mark Barocca 11, Japeth Aguilar 9, Dylan Ababou 7, JR Cawaling 6, Aldreich Ramos 3, Jayson Ballesteros 2, RJ Jazul 0, Ryan Buenafe 0.
Quarter scores: 24-18, 63-43, 98-71, 130-99.

-GLOBEGILAS-
its frustrating na natambakan ang smartgilas, just wen we thought dat everyting is ok na wid d team.ok lang sana kahit talo basta close lang yung game. but losing by a big margin is realy unaceptable
From Gilas fan, just want to know what went wrong? it seems same margin as talk n text did against gilas.
A little explanation please.
hehehe...congratz!...to all alaska guyz.....keep up the good and nice teamwork....let's get the trophy...
smart gilas team is just running plays or fine tuning offensive and defensive plays if you watch the games... win or lose, doesn't matter at this point...
"smart gilas team is just running plays or fine tuning offensive and defensive plays if you watch the games... win or lose, doesn't matter at this point..."
This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Smart Gilas' coach Toroman said himself when they won the game against San Miguel (and the two games before that) that thay would play hard even if it's a no-bearing game. And he also said that he sensed the PBA teams when they lost to Smart Gilas where also playing hard. But I understand, sometimes may mga taong ganon - in denial kasi talo ang team nila. Sana acceptance na lang na at this point in time, hindi pa hinog ang Smart Gilas. Though I belive na lalakas pa sila lalo na pag na-kumpleto ang line-up kasama ang naturalized player at kung sino pang idadagdag na possibly big men.
Win or lose - dapat walang excuses. Both teams played hard, and that's the philosophy of Coach Toroman. He himself is no making excuses because he instilled in the minds of his players the value of hard-work every time they play.

bear in your mind that smart gilas' purpose in pba is not to win championships, but to gain experience and to tune up their skills. for those nut hugging and sausage swallowing pba fanboys out there, if can't say anything good about smart gilas...SHUT THE HELL UP!!
wala kasi si tiu at c smpson. di naging effective c japeth, nagkalat. matalino c tiu maglaro, mahina c cawaling, di marunong mag react.nakakahawa.
Smart Gilas is still a work in progress. I think it would be better if the PBA will work on a long-term goal by collaborating with other governing bodies in the country if we really want our country to do better in basketball. Obviously, other countries are much much ahead of us in terms of preparation and talent development. In my opinion, the greatest obstacle that faces the future of Philippine basketball in international competion is of course, politics.
dun sa nagsabing wheres the gilas fan?! ako gilas fan and okay talo ang gilas masaya ka na? haha hayz atleast kame we dont make excuses kung talo yun team nmin pero pag pba natalo haha anu sasabihin nyo hindi sineryoso? kame tangap nmin pag natatalo kame kasi hindi kame perfect at yun team hindi din perfect kala nyo kasi porket talo na e wala ng pagasa! nagsisimula palang ang gilas hayz! pba no.1? haha mas gusto ko pa panuurin volleyall e haha hayz grow up! couple of years pa tignan ko lang kung nasan yang pba nyo
lolz, they're not competeting with pba teams when no bearing games where announced.
I still have to see the smart gilas team come back from big leads from the pba teams. They need to fine tune their defense, letting your opponent score 130 points is like letting your opponent score 20 goals in a soccer game or 20 homeruns in a baseball game.
In the few games of Smart Gilas in the PBA, the weaknesses and strengths of the team just became obvious.
1.They lack a strong center and power forward.
2.Their wingmen and off guards are a bunch of weaklings afraid to mix it up inside. Players like Ababou, Cawaling, Jazul should be replaced with 6'5" small forwards or Off guards who can create situations and finish hard inside the paint.
3.Aguilar, Husseini and Ballesteros should beef up their bodies and practice low post games and defense.
4.Add another intelligent point guard a tall one who can also play Off guard.
5.The defense of this team is really weak. These guys should spend more time in the weights room specially Ramos and Ballesteros.
6.Baracael should learn to play more as a shooting guard.
Andy Jao Mapa
Smart Gilas badly needs players like - Norwood, Maierhoffer, Stanhardinger. Nonoy Baclao and Elmer Espiritu would do better than an Ababou, Cawaling and Jazul na parang mga bakla maglaro...They can't even make things happen on defense
Diegohhh
si tiu tlga main playmaker ng gilas kita naman. casio since his dlsu days was a scorer good ballhandling and 3 pt. shooting and barroca is a good slasher and has a good perimeter jumper. kelangan nung dlwa mag improve on point. pag wala si tiu mag fall apart? parang phoenix suns na wala si steve nash? tapos yung mga g/f dapat improve shooting. pati slashing skills. parang takot pang pumasok sa loob. daming jumpers na sablay e.. and yeah the defense is really lacking
There is nothing wrong in losing, what you learn from it is important. Maybe the ex senator jaworski can be tapped to help in motivating this young guys to perform beyond expectations.
wla si tiu at sampson hayzz puro excuses no bearing game nlng talo parin at tambak pa, ALASKA nlng ang Gawing national team for sure mas maganda ung ipapakta nla sa Smart walng gilas
PBA parin Ang #1
its just a matter of time mga dude!!!!!lalakas yang gilas na yan in less than a year!!!!...at least makikita natin na may potential yung mga player through good coaching!!!!!pag ma pepperfect nila yung running game eh malakas na talaga sila...center nalang kulang at ok na yan para sa running game!!!!!GODBLESS SG!!!!
Ksama ka diyan arjhun esep esep, 3 years program ang gilas.
Andy Jao, tama yun observation (constructive) sa Gilas. Attention Mr. Noli and Mr. Toroman.

Good Luck Smart Gilas And SMB sa mga Hater Shame on you...

Si Hugnatan 6'4" lang di na ma stop ng big men ng Smart how much more yung mga 6'8 ", 6'9" forwards ng China, Lebanon at Iran, isa lang ang import nila they need another strong big man who can complement the game of Aguilar someone like a Kelly Williams and a Guard like Norwood.
it is better for smart gilas to lose more games now rather than the actual competitions. it only shows that the team needs to learn more and needs to beef up their line up. adjustments could be made. coaching staff knows who among the aspirants can deliver and who cannot. if we, basketball communities dream for a descent showings of our very own team in international meet, we must act together. critisism is just fine, hardwork and sacrifices are needed. players should be lend and release from different potentials. there still lot of time, " support the national team "
Dapat sa National team na lang maglaro si Norwood, mabubulok lang sya sa ROS na talunan puro dunk lang ang na sho-showcase na talent nya dahil andami nilang guards and he is more of a role player and not a go to guy. He can play 1 and 2 he will be a big advantage in those positions because of his height and he's a natural playing those spots and he's a good compliment to Aguilar. Talk n text can trade another player for him so they can lend him to Smart Gilas.
sana po makuha nila c dillinger, norwood, tsaka cguro isang veteran point guard,,tulad ni jimmy alapag!
Who cares if they lost..... tagal pa naman FIBA qaulifying eh..... I watch their performance on that day..... as of now.... it's all training..... tuning skills and getting cohesive....
PBA still sucks..... kahit anung sabihin nyong mga PBA fans.... the truth is PBA never get the RP in the Olympic..... and thats history..... BS
im still hoping for junmar fajardo, stanhardinger, pringle and lutz to join in the team..
hmm..
