Jamal Wesley Sampson, the new American reinforcement of the Smart Gilas-Pilipinas development team, is to flash his wares in the Philippine Basketball Association starting Friday.

The 6-foot-11 NBA veteran signed a one-year deal with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas over the weekend, SBP executive director Noli Eala said.

Financial terms were not disclosed but Eala said Sampson will have the same benefits and privileges enjoyed by CJ Giles, the first American prospect of Smart Gilas who was kicked out of the team last month for failing to meet SBP expectations.

Sampson is a University of California-Berkeley alumnus who played for five NBA clubs.

“Jamal’s maturity, size and skills are what we need in our quest,” said SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan in a statement.

Sampson will go through the process of naturalization to reinforce Smart Gilas, which will represent the country in the 2010 Asian Games and the 2011 Fiba Asia championship.

Jamal’s signing with Smart Gilas has improved our competitiveness,” said SBP vice chair Ricky Vargas.

Eala said Sampson was about to sign a lucrative $55,000 monthly deal with a Chinese ballclub in Fujian when the SBP snatched him through agent Chris Emmens, the same player-agent who brought in Giles.

Games on Friday (December 11) Ynares | Antipolo
2:30PM Smart Gilas vs. Barako Bull
5:00PM Sta. Lucia vs. Coca-Cola
7:30PM TNT vs. Burger King

That's why we need the PBA to change their minds and start supporting (100%) the NT squad. I mean in reality if the PBA players cannot match against international squad, what more the ones coming off colleges.

The difference is the guys below the PBA has a chance to go up a level bec they will play in international competition. This guys are young and success does not happen overnight and more so that the style of the PBA is in contrast to the style of international game and the philosophy being instilled to this young guys.

Some of this young players come off colleges at positions that Toroman thinks they should never be playing at, so that again is transition, add the fact it took awhile to complete the line up, the guys at the PBA has been together for years, Gilas is what 1yr...

I'm particularly not worried right now the true test is the one away from our shores.

Unless there's a miracle and the PBA would want to represent the country 1st before their pockets then we just have to sux it up and stick with Gilas

    credit to pinoy exchange

The problem now for Gilas is consistency sa defense and wala pang a true team leader & enforcer sa court. With addition now of Sampson and plus 2 to 3 new Fil foreigner players (early next year) + training sa labas ng Pinas, baka puede na sa international tournament, di na mananalo ang PBA Teams.

ayos sa pangarap! hahhahahhaaa PBA is The best aminin man o hinde...andon lahat ng pinakamagagaling sa buong pilipinas...

the national team from lebanon clobbered the powerade team in one-on-one game in fiba-asia and in jones cup tournament. the pysical conditioning of pba players are no match to other asian counterparts. just remember that smart gilas smothered the powerade team recently. so which is more potent, the powerade team or the alaska team?

ganun?
