Sampson better than Giles, says Toroman

Serbian coach Rajko Toroman, the architect of Iran’s emergence to become the new Asian powerhouse, certainly has an eye for talent. Without batting an eyelash, the Smart-Gilas mentor would pick Jamal Sampson over a CJ Giles anytime, anywhere.

For Toroman, who led the Iranian men’s basketball team to it’s first-ever FIBA Asia Championship crown two years ago, Sampson is indeed the perfect choice for the Smart-Gilas five.

He is a better defender and rebounder," Toroman told GMANews.TV while scouting Purefoods’s game against Ginebra Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum. “CJ relies by blocking shots while Jamal knows how to use his body and is a better on ball defender. He’s a legit NBA player and has high basketball IQ."

Sampson came from a family with rich basketball background. His cousin, Ralph, the 1983 NBA Draft’s overall top pick, teamed up with Hakeem Olajuwon in forming the Houston Rockets’ twin tower combo during the 80s.

The younger Sampson was selected 47th overall in the 2002 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz and was traded along with Ryan Humphrey for Curtis Borchardth. He played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Charlotte Bobcats, Sacramento Kings and saw action for 22 games with the Denver Nuggets.

At one time, he led the NBA in rebounds average per minute. I believe he will be a perfect fit for our team," added Toroman, whose wards will play against tough Middle Eastern teams in Dubai in January next year.

Sampson signed a two-year contract with Smart-Gilas over the weekend and will start playing for the national team aspirants in the PBA starting Friday.

Another player, Fil-Am Chris Lutz of Marshall University, is expected to join the national developmental pool, this March.

We need him on the team as we want a player who is good defending perimeter players. Lutz will bring a lot of energy on our team," said Toroman on the 6foot-3 guard.

Lutz attended the national team’s camp early this year and has shown a lot of upside in his game.

Games on Friday (December 11) Ynares | Antipolo
2:30PM Smart Gilas vs. Barako Bull
5:00PM Sta. Lucia vs. Coca-Cola
7:30PM TNT vs. Burger King

dapat i request ding kunin ni toroman si norwood at williams... o mas madaming pang pba players..aminin man o hinde maraming players ng PBA ang dadaigin at papanisin ng buo ibang players o majority ng gilas. if given a coach like toroman and system like his..sa isang lineup na made up of PBA players pa rin talaga no doubt!

Yes I agree. The best "talents" are there in the PBA. But, what's the use of those talents if their organization and even some players are not willing to have them utilized?

And they give gredit to Smart Gilas program.

Medyo time pressured na kase ang SBP.
Medyo malapit na rin ang 2011
    (Qualifications for Olympics).
    Kaya kuha kuha ng players.
Mas marami mas OK in the end.

Except for Dillinger, Norwood at Williams kase
kahit Fil-Ams sila mas may PUSO pa sila mag-laro kaysa kay James Yap.

if only junmar, pringle and stanhardinger would and could join the team..perfect line up na sana kahit wala williams, norwood at dillinger

  13. Anonymous // December 8, 2009 8:38 PM

yup..i agree fajardo 6'10 and stanhardinger 6'8" could really give a ceiling to the team and pringle to strengthen the backcourt, nice

If CG Giles had just been a good influence to his teammates he could be an excellent back up for Jamal Sampson. It could be an unbeatable tandem, however it is still a blessing in disguise as we could possibly find an untapped talents abroad, especially with the height as tall as 7 feet to bang bodies with the 7 footers of Asia.

With the determination and financial backing of MVP all this things will be materialized.

To MVP if you ran for senator, i will surely vote for you, if you ran for Vice President, I will surely vote for you also, if you ran for President, you will be one of my first choice!!!

I just hope you can handle a cabinet post and shows us your excellent government service, then running for a Presidential post will be a surefire success.

No PBA players please.

Well said bro. So one or two months before the tournament, tsaka pa nila pwede i release. So useless rin.
