Powerhouse China brought the Philippine-Careline Youth team back to earth via a 129-36 thrashing Wednesday in the 1st Under-16 FIBA-Asia Basketball Girls Championship at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune, India.

Fresh from a 72-56 victory over Southeast Asian neighbor Singapore, the RP Under-16 squad failed to match the intensity and hot shooting of the taller Chinese, who have an average height of 6-foot-3 with Zhang Liting as the tallest at 6-foot-7.

The Nationals suffered their second loss in the week-long 12-nation tournament while China now leads Group A with a clean 3-0 slate.

The Under-16 FIBA-Asia Basketball Girls Championship is a qualifying event for the Under-17 World Championship for Women in 2010 at Rodez and Toulouse, France.

Lore Rivera was the lone RP youth member who scored in double figures, finishing with 14 behind a 5-of-5 shooting from the floor and making four of his six attempts at the free throw line.

Six Chinese players turned in 10 points or more with Meng Li leading all scorers with 27 markers while Mengxin Sun and Liting Zhang added 20 and 17, respectively.

Yi Shen, Xueya Ma and Yi Shen tallied 13, 12 and 10 points also for the Chinese.

On Tuesday, Danica Therese Jose led a furious first quarter scoring attack to help the Philippine-Careline Youth team to a 72-56 win over Singapore.

Jose, daughter of former RP Youth team mainstay Bobby Jose, helped the Nationals break the game wide open, building a 21-7 lead that the Patrick Gregorio-mentored squad protected until the final buzzer.

She paced Philippine-Careline’s scoring with 16 points while teammates Elrica Castro and Rivera combined for 22 points.

The Nationals dropped their opening assignment against host India, 91-64.

The RP girls’ even led by 25 points but allowed the Singaporeans to come to within two points for a 30-28 halftime edge.
