If there are two players that should figure prominently in the World 10-Ball Championship, a star-studded tournament which fires off today at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, they are Ralf Souquet of Germany and Ronnie Alcano of the Philippines.
Souquet, the world’s No. 1 player today, and Alcano, always a force to reckon with, are both trying to become the first player in pool history to win the world 8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball crowns. The 10-ball title is the only missing jewel in their personal collections.
The next six days will decide whether Souquet or Alcano deserve a place in history. And it won’t be easy because the tournament, which offers a top prize of $60,000, has attracted 128 of the finest cue artists representing close to 40 countries.
There’s defending champion Darren Appleton of Great Britain, Niels Feijen of the Netherlands, Mika Immonen of Finland, Shane Van Boening of the United States, Marcus Chamat of Sweden, Daryl Peach of Great Britain and those from Chinese Taipei.
And from the Philippines, also out to win it all are 2008 revelation Demosthenes Pulpul, Jeffrey de Luna, Marlon Manalo, Antonio Gabica, Warren Kiamco, Lee Van Corteza, Antonio Lining, Roberto Gomez, Ramil Gallego and Michael Feliciano.
During yesterday’s formal press conference at the Heritage Hotel, Souquet said the six-day event is a wide-open race. He knows that as the top seed, he will be a marked man.
“I know,” said Souquet, who added that with a field just as tough as it can get, it’s very difficult to pick a real favorite, and that includes himself or Alcano, the 2006 World 9-Ball champion.
