Still undefeated Marvin “Marvelous” Sonsona has no other option but to move to the junior featherweight to maintain his bid to follow the footsteps of Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.
Sonsona, who lost the super flyweight title on Sunday for fighting at 2.6 pounds over the 115-pound limit, said he does not regret losing the crown.
“I’m not really in good condition but if I’m in shape I could have knocked him out,” said Sonsona through his trainer Nonito Donaire Sr., after the fight. “I’m willing to fight now at higher weight.”
The 19-year-old General Santos figured in a draw against Alejandro Hernandez of Mexico in the title fight.
“Marvin’s coaches and management did not force him to lose the extra 2.6 pounds due to further possible dehydration during the fight that will put Marvin at risk,” said his promoter Allan Tremblay.
Tremblay also said Sonsona is “a young guy exploding into a man.” Even after giving up solid food mid-week, Sonsona couldn’t slim down any further.
When a Friday night workout got him to 117.6 pounds, Tremblay decided to forfeit the title rather than try something drastic to make weight.
“He could have drained himself down to 115, but after six rounds he would have been a depleted fighter,” he said, “Why kill him? Why take a possible loss when we have another plan for him anyway?” he said, referring to a plan to move Sonsona up to the 122-pound division.
