CEBU – Hometown boy Dondon Hontiveros started the game with a jumper making him the 60th PBA player to hit the 5,000-point plateau. Then his teammates helped Hontiveros make his homecoming more meaningful Saturday night.

San Miguel Beer imposed its strength early and clobbered Coca-Cola, 107-84, for a seventh straight win in the 2009-2010 KFC PBA Philippine Cup witnessed by a good weekend crowd at the New Cebu Coliseum.

The Beermen made it two in a row in the Phoenix Fuel PBA on Tour and improved to 7-2 overall, just half-game behind the pacesetting Alaska Milk Aces (7-1).

Hontiveros and the rest of the SMB gang continued to dish out A-1 performance, setting a new season record streak of seven games with a whopping average margin of 16.7 points.

Alaska’s own streak was halted by Rain or Shine in six games. The Aces notched win No. 7 at the expense of the Talk n Text Tropang Texters Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Beermen buckled down to work early, taking the opening quarter at 29-17, then they kept commanding spreads all the way to the finish.

Struggling minus main man Asi Taulava, the Tigers hardly got into the game, suffering a sixth loss in seven outings.

For the record, Coca-Cola had never had a previous 1-6 start since joining the league in 2002.

The Beermen broke the game wide open right in the first half while dominating the boards, getting the baskets and also doing their job on the defensive end.

Mark Macapagal was the lone Tiger doing well in the first half. Alas, he had to sit down after a flagrant foul on a driving Bonbon Custodio.

Macapagal had set a personal season high of 11 points before taking the breather. He wound up with 18.

Hontiveros was visibly inspired playing before his kababayans, churning out double-double numbers with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Arwind Santos sizzled with 14 in the first half and finished with 16 with Dorian Pena adding 14 and Jonas Villanueva 12.

San Miguel built a 20-point cushion at 51-31 on a floating shot by Custodio before settling for a 56-39 spread at the half. (SB)
