JOHOR BAHRU (FIBA Asia U16 Championship): Philippines ran circles around the slothful Chinese defense for three-quarters of the game, but the latter’s more varied options in offense helped them win the first semifinal 85-66 on Thursday.

The win put Fan Bin’s boys in the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship scheduled to be held in Germany next year, but the coach would certainly spend a sleepless night worried about the way his defense reacted – or didn’t react – even when pitted against a team that was smaller by almost 14 centimeters in average height.

A woeful 35% shooting percentage as against the rivals’ 60% saw China trail for almost the entire first quarter at the end of which they trailed 15-19.

A 10-0 run early in the second quarter put China ahead by a sizable margin for the first time in the game, but Philippines shot back with a spree of their own to level the scores to push China back to the way again.

But with a resourceful line-up, led by the immensely talented Guo Ailun and the robust Ju Mingxin, at their disposal only their own shooting mistakes would have kept China away from the victory.

Philippines to their credit kept the pressure on the scoreboard before China’s offensive power was unleashed in the fourth quarter.

Guo played only a 1:27 in the second half and was rested completely in the fourth quarter after having scored 11 points in the first half.

Ju added only three to his 15 in the first three quarters, but Wang Zirui who was fielded only in the second half and Zhai Xiaochuan took care of the scoring.

China thus managed to win by 19 points, the smallest margin in the Championship thus far. [via fibaasia.net]

FYI: These kids are getting big salaries from nokia... madaming bata jan ayaw din maglaro kung walang sweldo! it's THE TRUTH..:) goodluck BOYS!!!

  10. Anonymous // November 25, 2009 7:42 PM

The allowances these boys get are not enough for their sacrifices. They have to balance their studies, school basketball practices, and the RP practices.

Now, if some of these kids request for allowances, I think they have the right considering the hardwork and the sacrifices they're putting in. Their team is no different from the Smart Gilas Team. The Nokia RP is only the younger version. Would Chris Tiu, Rabeh, and the rest of the Smart Gilas players play for free? I don't think so...

    Kaso nakakahiyang team ang POWERADE.
    Bad mannered and undisciplined.

If may team na worthy sa WILD CARD from ASIA.
Taiwan yun. They showed a lot of HEART.
    Yung POWERADE puro PORMA.

    ***

Tsaka sabi sa FIBA 2010 website...
Kelangan yung TEAM ay active noon 2008 at 2009.
Nung 2008... di tayo ganun ka-active at walang achievements. (2008 ah)

Isang requirement din is yung Country ay may conducive and good economy.
Matapos ang massacre/killing ng mga AMPATUAN
at pag deadma lang ni Gloria, I dont think..
nasa Good Status ang Economy natin. No Sir.

  24. Anonymous // November 26, 2009 7:57 PM

ok lng yan kahit natalo tayo ng china . . .
    may reasons eh
    #1 u19 yung nakalaban nila . .
#2 matatangkad ang mga chinese , guard nila forward natin.. avrge height nila 6'4"
tayo 5'9" ata eh.. 6'1" lng ang center natin c ferrer.
    good showing RP team.
    keep it up . .
    center lng kulang sa atin..
tsaka sobra-sobra nga talent natin eh compared sa mga chinese. . .
sana may wild card din para sa u17 malaki chance natin pra mkapasok..

  25. Anonymous // November 26, 2009 8:09 PM

AYOS TO! kht natalo tyo sa china, 19 pts lang. it means na tlgang palaban mga players dito.. sana pag kinuha ulit kyo ng RP team, sumali ulit kyo tska i-compare nyo n un mga laro nyo sa mga US highschool and college players para sa ganun, world-class ang talent na maaachieve nyo..

  26. Anonymous // November 26, 2009 8:34 PM

there's nothing to be ashamed of, guys... mga bata pa kayo and yet nakapag-laro na kayo internationally. kaya dun palang panalo na kayo! malaki pa ang pwede nyong i-improve. For sure in time you guys will become one of the best players of our country. Practice lang kayo. Keep believing. Hope for the best. Never give-up. Mabuhay Kayo!!

  38. Anonymous // November 27, 2009 12:11 PM

wala namang umaapela sa pagkatalo. it's more of encouragement for doing their best despite the odds --- in height, preparation, government support, etc. Let's give the boys the credit for a big heart and uplift them so that they will retain their patriotism in the coming years and not think of going pro. Malayo pa mararating ng nga batang 'to. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

There's a comment and we criticize. That's what happened to Powerade Team Pilipinas.

This time, we Appreciate. Appreciate their hearts. Just like having a son. You need to encourage them, not to break them down.

I am truly proud of this young Philippine Team and its accomplishments. As long as they remain healthy and passionate about their game, they will go a long, long way. Shout off to my nephew on the team, Paolo Romero.
