Nonito “The Filipino Flash" Donaire, Jr. will again star in the third edition of Top Rank’s “Pinoy Power" PPV card on Feb. 13 when he takes on Mexican challenger Gerson Guerrero at the Hilton Casino in Las Vegas.
The interim WBA super flyweight champion announced his next fight and opponent during a fan appreciation event at the Bay Area over the weekend, according to a report by Examiner.Com.
A former flyweight champion, Donaire (22-1, 14 KOs) began his quest to become a multi-division titlist by dominating a four pounds overweight Rafael Concepcion of Panama in a fight for the interim WBA super flyweight strap last August at the Hard Rock Hotel in Casino in Las Vegas.
Little is known about his next opponent, Guerrero (34-8-0, 26 KOs). Based on records compiled by BoxRec.com, the Mexican with the alias “El Nene" is coming off a 10th round TKO win over compatriot Enrique Quevedo last June in Mexico City. The fight was for the vacant NABF super flyweight title and also served as WBC super flyweight eliminator.
The 32-year-old Guerrero previously vied for a world title at a higher division – the WBO bantamweight crown - but got knocked out in two rounds by Daniel Ponce de Leon in Carson City in May 2006.
The other pairings in “Pinoy Power 3" are not yet announced by Top Rank, although it would definitely include other top Filipino fighters.
Donaire topbilled the two previous editions, knocking out Mexican-American Raul Martinez in four rounds in Part 1 last April at the historic Araneta Coliseum, his last fight at flyweight, and outpointing Concepcion in Part 2 last August in Las Vegas.
The 27-year-old fighter have a long layoff following that victory over Concepcion, enjoying his Philippine vacation and doing TV shows like Celebrity Duets.
Now fully recovered from his bout with dengue and his injured left hand completely healed, the Bohol-born Donaire should have “no problem jumping back in the thick of things," noted Examiner.Com.
Donaire is one of five Filipino world boxing champions, joining seven-division titlist Manny Pacquiao, newly-minted WBC light flyweight kingpin Rodel Mayol, IBF light flyweight supremo Brian Viloria, and WBO minimumweight holder Donnie Nietes in the elite roster.
"Hawaiian Punch" Viloria and "Ahas" Nietes are slated to star in a double title fight card at the Cuneta Astrodome on Jan. 23 against challengers Carlos Tamara of Columbia and Ivan Meneses of Mexico, respectively.
