Smart-Gilas faces elite squads in Amsterdam

source: Joaquin Henson | philstar.com

If the PBA is rough sailing for Smart-Gilas, then coach Rajko Toroman’s national team is in for even stormier weather when it plays in the top-level Haarlem basketball tournament in Amsterdam Dec. 26-30.

SBP executive director Noli Eala said yesterday the Haarlem organizers are inviting Gilas to play against the Dutch national team, the Russian national developmental squad, the Brazilian national quintet, the Brazilian club champion and a team from the Americas. Gilas will represent Asia in the annual competition.

No doubt, Toroman’s reputation had a lot to do with the invitation. Toroman booked a ticket for Iran to play in the Beijing Olympics after winning the FIBA-Asia title in 2007.

“We’ll learn from this experience,” said Eala. “This is a high-quality tournament and a test for our players. We’ll be away from our families for Christmas and New Year’s Day so this is also a big sacrifice for the team.”

Eala said Gilas will be reinforced by guard Stanley Pringle of Penn State in Amsterdam. Pringle’s mother Elvira is Filipina and he is now playing as an import in Belgium.

We invited Pringle to our tryout camp in Las Vegas last April but he couldn’t make it as he was in the middle of entertaining offers from the European leagues,” said Eala. “We just found out in his first game in Belgium, Pringle scored 11 points in 28 minutes. He’s playing in a top-caliber league so coach Rajko is impressed with his showing. Pringle will give us a lot of speed in the backcourt.”

Eala said Gilas is also headed for Dubai to play in an invitational tournament on Jan. 14-21. But even before Amsterdam, he said Gilas will play against a Lebanese club in Dubai on Dec. 4 during the United Arab Emirates national day celebrations. Gilas will be away for four days and Eala said he has already advised the PBA of the schedule.

After playing the 10 mandatory games against PBA teams in the Philippine Cup eliminations, Eala said it is likely Gilas will bow out of further competition to concentrate on foreign assignments.

We could play more games against the eliminated PBA teams depending on their availability but I’m not sure if that would be productive both for us and the PBA since they would be no-bearing games,” said Eala. “We could just play practice games with the PBA anyway. So at the moment, we’re not inclined to play beyond our 10 games.”

Eala said he’s looking forward to Gilas bouncing back after losing three in a row in the Philippine Cup.

We’re waiting for the end of the CESAFI finals,” he continued. “Greg Slaughter will be back with us from the University of Visayas after Oct. 31 and we’re hoping to also get Junmar Fajardo from the University of Cebu. Greg is 6-11 and Junmar is 6-10. Can you imagine our frontline with Japeth (Aguilar), C.J. Giles, Jason Ballesteros, Greg and Junmar?

Eala said he is also trying to recruit University of the East hotshot Paul Lee.

“We’re talking with Paul, his family and coach Lawrence (Chongson),” said Eala. “We’re trying to convince Mr. Bong Tan and coach Lawrence that playing for Gilas will prepare Paul more for the next UAAP season than playing anywhere else. He can return to UE and rejoin us in time for the Asian Games in November next year. By then, we will already be playing Chris Lutz.

Lutz, a Fil-Am sharpshooting guard from Marshall University, is playing out his US NCAA Division I eligibility this season and will start playing for Gilas in March.

I don’t think our morale is down,” said Eala. “It’s just a combination of things. We’re mentally and physically tired. We’re committing a lot of turnovers and our shooting is off. We’re not establishing ourselves inside and we’ve been inconsistent driving the lane. Coach Rajko realizes he has to be harder on the guys. Look at what Chot (Reyes) did to us. We’ve practiced with Talk ‘N’ Text for a month so he knew all our plays. Preparing for the FIBA-Asia Championships is different from preparing for a long PBA season. That’s not an excuse for us but the reality. We’re making adjustments because we want to be competitive in the PBA, too.”

Eala said the transformation from playing in college to the PBA has been a struggle for several players, including UAAP MVP Dylan Ababou.

We’ve talked to our guys about the adjustments,” said Eala. “Dylan, for instance, knows he’s got to step up and he’s committed to losing weight so he can be more flexible. It’s too bad we lost Rey Guevara who’s out for six months after undergoing a knee operation last week.”

Eala said Chris Tiu was ready to play against Ginebra last Friday but doctors advised more rest for his hamstring. Rabeh Al Hussaini, recovering from the flu, practiced only once before the Ginebra game and R.J. Jazul just rejoined Gilas starting with the game against Talk ‘N’ Text. “Moving players in and out has affected our rotation but we just have to work harder,” said Eala.

player din ba ung brother si Stanley?

  8. Anonymous // October 29, 2009 1:33 AM

Go SMB. Go TnT Go. Gilas

  14. whyOwhy // October 29, 2009 2:44 AM

for sure mas pabor sa mga half breed ung line up.. mas may adavantage sila... kawawa naman ung nasa original line up na pure pinoy breed... sila matatanggal dyan.. uNFAIR!

  15. Anonymous // October 29, 2009 6:43 AM

Gilas will make waves if they finally get Stanly Pringle into the lineup. My Fearless forecast for the Asian Games:

    First 5:

    1 Center - CJ Giles 6'11
    2 P Forward - Rabeh Al-Hussaini 6'7
    3 S Forward - Japeth Aguilar 6'10
    4 S Guard/Forward - Jared Dillinger 6'5
    5 P Guard - Stanley Pringle 6'1

    Bench:

    6 S Guard - Chris Lutz 6'3
    7 P Guard - Mark Barocca 5'9
    8 S/P Guard - Chris Tiu 5'11
    9 S Guard - Dylan Ababou 6'3
    10 S Guard/Forward - Marnel Baracael 6'4
    11 Center - Greg Slaughter 7'0
    12 Center/Forward - Junmar Fajardo 6'10

    Alternates:

    13 P Forward - Jason Ballesteros 6'7
    14 S Guard/Forward - Sean Anthony 6'4
    15 P Guard - JV Casio 5'10

Think Bigger.. Dati dominated ng mga Fil-Am and PBA and all of a sudden the doors open up for international competition. Ngayon lang ako nakakarinig ng mag Fil-Am or Fil-Foreigners na already may base na pagdating sa basketball outside of the Philippines.Hopefully marami pang mag Fil-Foreigners na mainvite at madiscover to join the Gilas team para naman ma elevate and status ng mga pinoy pagdating sa basketball at sa ibang sports din

  17. JM // October 29, 2009 6:59 AM

  19. sex me // October 29, 2009 7:22 AM

    C 6-11 CJ Giles - American (naturalize)
    C 6-11 Greg Slaughter - Pinoy50% American50%
    F 6-10 Japeth Aguilar - Pinoy100%
    F 6-10 Junmar Fajardo - Pinoy100%
    F 6-6 Rabeh Alhussaini - Pinoy50% Bumbay50%
    F 6-6 Nico Monachini - Pinoy50% Italian50%
    F 6-4 Sean Anthony - Pinoy25% American75%
    G 6-4 Jared Dillinger - Pinoy50% American50%
    G 6-6 Ray Parks Jr. - Pinoy50% American 50%
    G 6-5 Gabe Norwood - Pinoy25% American75%
    G 6-4 Chris Lutz - Pinoy25% American 75%
    G 6-1 Stanley Pringle - Pinoy50% American50%

  21. Anonymous // October 29, 2009 8:33 AM

i hope SBP can get stanley pringle to smart gilas he is definately a big factor for our national team, go go SBP, go go SMART GILAS..

  22. Anonymous // October 29, 2009 8:40 AM

oi utol, taga cebu ako, si Fajardo at si Slaughter marami pang kakainin yan.di nga nka porma sa san miguel yang mga yan.....di rin naka porma sa cebu ninos.....ilagay mo sa tamang lugar yung pagka proud mo..tsk tsk tsk...compare mo namn sa profesional yang dalawa.....much respect to Gilas..but sad to say parang si baroca at aguilar lng ata maiiwan sa orig na line up..hihihihi

  23. Anonymous // October 29, 2009 8:56 AM

@markmenk, bakit, yung powerade ba saka yung ibang teams natin previously walang half pinoy? So ano ang point mo? I supported all Philippine team. So ikaw, bakit di mo sinusuportahan ang Gilas? Pinoy ka rin di ba?

  24. Anonymous // October 29, 2009 8:59 AM

that only means its time for pinoy talents to improve their skills or else mawala talaga sila picture....yan ang kabutihan ng open market because may competition...you shuold compete against the best...may the best player play....kung tayo2x lng mg laro hindi tayo mg iimprove kasi yung level ng skills natin ay naka base sa laro din natin.....sa nga hindi lng mga half pinoy ang palaruin....dapat open sa lahat like what spain is doing for so long....kahit sino puede mg laro sa liga nila.....as what i have said, may the best player play....kung wala ka talagang talent pure pinoy ka man o half pinoy e problema mo na yun...you should compete against the best....

i think gilas is going to a direction where all the players are half bred...si Chris Tiu mawalang trabaho ..pwede na sa that;s entertainment

  26. Anonymous // October 29, 2009 9:22 AM

    Ayus!
    Ok na sa Big Men.

    Giles 6'11"
    Slaughter 6'11"
    Aguilar 6'9"
    Fajardo 6'9"
    Ballesteros 6'8"
    Sison 6'7"
    Al-Hussaini 6'7"

Aguilar, Fajardo, Ballesteros and Sison are not half-breeds! Proudly Pinoy yan!

  27. Anonymous // October 29, 2009 9:26 AM

Uy wala naman PINOY na pure!
    Ang PINOY is hati-hating
Malay, Indones, Negrito then Intsik at Kastila.

  31. Mr. Ponte // October 29, 2009 9:45 AM

Stanley Pringle is a perfect addition to the Gilas team because of his speed, agility and superior basketball fundamentals. It reminds me of Allen Iverson. Pringle is much more talented than Rasheim Wright of Jordan national team. And the nice thing is we dont have to naturalize this guy because he's half-Filipino. With Pringle and Lutz on the front court, this would be bad news to the opposing team for they are pure shooters that can shoot the 3 at any angles. Visualize this line up guys:

    First Squad:

    C- Giles
    F- Aguilar
    F- Fajardo
    G- Lutz
    G- Pringle

    Second unit:

    C- Slaughter
    F- Al-Hussaini
    F- Ballesteros
    G- Norwood
    G- Dillinger

Toroman can even opt to start his Second unit, considering the depth of this team. The Second unit alone can scare teams like Lebanon, Taiwan or Korea.
Chot Reyes was right when he said that the Gilas team need quick and tall Guards. The fact that our Asian neighbors have 6'5" to 6'9" Point Guards.

    Good Luck Team Gilas.

  35. Anonymous // October 29, 2009 11:19 AM

Magtagumapay nawa kayo.

Whatever the team composition of the RP Smart Gilas team as long as she can win the Asian Games and the FIBA Asia Olympic qualifying tournament in the year to come, I don't care!!! what is important for me as avid basketball fan, is to see the Philippines once again regain respectability just even in the Asian region, and see a filipino make it to the NBA.

When the Philippines make it to the Olympics someday, I want to see her play the USA DREAM TEAM, SPAIN, ARGENTINA, and whatever its results even if it is too lopsided infavor with these powerhouse teams, I dont care because for me it is still an honor to play against the best in world, the producers of legends in world basketball.

Sino ba ang pure pinoy these days ? Ako meron akong halong chinese blood, malay and indonesian . . .Lahat ng pinoys meron halo and genetically speaking the only pure pinoys lang eh mga Mangyans or Negritos who were really rooted on the islands before the indonesians and the Malays discovered the islands we now call the Philippines . . .Lahat tayo ay multiple breeds . . Therefore, Fil-ams, Fil-Aus, Fil-Italians . .Fil whatever are still pinoys . . .Stupid nalang ang nag co comment about half breeds . . If you went through highschool or college these are such basic historical facts you should have gleaned through before you graduated . . . .This just goes to prove that people who comment regarding half breeds are ignoramus and have no place or authority to comment on such subject matters - Allanboy

Daming crab mentality dito sa forum natoh. Ang topic is all about SMART gilas strenghtening itself through acquisitions of Foreign bred Filipinos like Stanley Pringle. Mind you, they are still Filipinos and are honored with the distinction of playing for the Philippine flag. The argument whether they are half breeds are totally out of context and just goes to show the level of education some commenters have, what a pity. . . . .SBP is doing everything it can to bring back our lofty standing in Asia and all you can do is cricitize ?? This is typical Filipino talaga, mag cricitize muna bago mag contribute and sa pilitan pa. This is the perfect example of what we are today, people are more apt to criticizing the government for failing to deliver basic services, and these are the same people who throw cigarette butts and trash everywhere and jaywalk on busy streets and expect the government to clean up after them. Out country is not rich and even rich countries cannot police your trash everywhere you go. Great countries are built by the people not by the government . . ."Ask not what your country can do for you but ask what you can do for your country", a borrowed excerpt from JFK but this is what Pinoys should imbibe before deciding to just simply become critics all their lives . . . Support SMART gilas because they are you team, they represent the Philippines and this is the only program aside from the defunct NCCC that has gone to great lenghts in developing the youth to achieve a long term goal and that is to qualify for the olympics in 2011 . . .The road is hard enough without you dumb commenters to contend with. - Allanboy

Play for the country? E mukhang may katapat na presyo paglalaro nila? Libre ba silang maglalaro?

    So walang 25% Pinoy, 50% Pinoy%, Pinoy^Nth Pinoy...
