Smart Gilas beat Powerade Team Pilipinas, 98-69

The Smart Gilas team of Serbian coach Rajko Toroman has served notice of its readiness to play in the Philippine Basketball Association.

And they showed it by beating the country’s cream of the crop.

Relying not on anyone but everyone, Smart Gilas easily demolished an out-of-shape and undermanned Powerade-Pilipinas team, 98-69, Monday in the “Pinoy Basketball, Kakampi N’yo" fund-raising game at the Araneta Coliseum.

CJ Giles and Japeth Aguilar combined forces in possibly the most formidable frontline in Philippine basketball. Andy Barroca and JV Casio alternately played the point and held their own against their more experienced counterparts. And Dylan Ababou, Aldrech Ramos and Jason Ballesteros did a little bit of everything in handing Smart Gilas an easy triumph.

It was a game dominated by Toroman’s wards majority of the way.

They were only feeling their way around in the first few minutes of the first period, trailing by seven, 7-14, with James Yap and Willie Miller leading the way for Powerade.

Then came a big scoring outburst by Smart Gilas.

[source | micoravsky69]

Giles and Aguilar made their presence felt inside and JV Casio fired a trey to cap off a big 17-5 exchange as the all-amateur team seized a 24-19 lead at the end of the first.

It was all Smart Gilas from there, leading by as many as 20 points twice in the third canto.

And with Giles and Chris Tiu combining for a one scintillating play to complete an alley-oop slam and push Smart Gilas to a 92-76 lead with only 2:16 left , the curtains finally fell on the all-pro Powerade-Pilipinas five, which didn’t have the chance of practicing since its eighth-place finish in the last FIBA Asia Championship.

Overall, Smart Gilas outplayed Powerade in almost all fronts.

Toroman’s troops shot the ball decently, making 37 of 78 attempts for a 47% clip, while Powerade struggled all game long and shot only 34%.

Smart Gilas, as expected, played better as a team, dishing out 17 assists more than Powerade-Pilipinas.

On rebounds, Giles, Aguilar and Ballesteros were too much as they terrorized the shaded lane and clobbered their rivals. Smart Gilas grabbed 60 rebounds to only 36 by Powerade.

Former Los Angeles Lakers Giles finished with 22 points, 16 rebounds and five shot blocks for Smart Gilas, which will play as a guest team in the coming PBA. Aguilar, the controversial top overall pick who previously suited up for Powerade-RP, had 24 points and four rebounds.

A project of basketball stockholders in the country led by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and the PBA, the game was held for the benefit of victims of tropical storm “Ondoy" and in memory of Barako Bull executive Tony Chua, who perished at the height of the storm.

Inaantay ko na madahilan tong si Guaio.

    Eto una sasabihin niya:

    1. Kulang sila sa players
    2. Kulang sila sa practice
    3. meron pang isang dahilan toh
    4. magdadagdag pa ng isa pang dahilan

    LOL

  2. Vyron // October 5, 2009 10:54 PM

Powerade team beaten badly by Smart Gilas. Yeng Guiao should accept the fact that his coaching style is far more obsolete.

Keep up the good work.

  4. Junior // October 5, 2009 10:55 PM

Congrats to Smart Gilas. SBP is on the right track. The future is now.

  5. Novo // October 5, 2009 10:57 PM

Walang sinabi ang PBA (Bayan ng Superstars) sa Smart Gilas. Hindi pa yan kumpleto ha, wala pa sina Fajardo, Al-Hussaini, Lutz at Slaughter.

    galing ah!

ok, smart gilas haters, wer are u???? i am waiting for your excuses for powerade,,, hahaha..

  9. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 10:59 PM

I think Yeng Guiao should be replaced as head coach of the PBA All Star immediately. He lacks the basketball knowledge to compete at a very high level in basketball and is embarrassing to the PBA.

  13. Rigor // October 5, 2009 11:01 PM

  20. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:08 PM

hindi na kailangan mag excuse c kalbo khit sbihin nyang kulang cla at wlang praktis. take note professional player kyo. dpat nman khit kulang at wla kyo praktis dpat nman hindi ganun ang itatambak ng smart gilas. hahaha tlagang bulok sistema ni kalbo hahaha

  21. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:11 PM

    Wahahahahaha!
    Ayos!

    29 points is unexcusable.
Kahit na sabihin mong di kayo kumpleto.
The fact na BAYAN daw KAYO ng SUPERSTARS...
    SUPERSTARS from different PBA TEAMS...
Hindi kayo dapat nagpapatambak ng ganyan.
That is... kung BAYAN nga ba kayo ng SUPERSTAR???

PBA Brand of Basketball is obsolete.

    Congrats sa SMART GILAS! :D

  22. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:13 PM

SEE! We can win over Korea,Lebanon,Qatar if only Powerade did something about International basketball! To PBA: To BAN Japeth will just RUIN THE PBA AND BASKETBALL IN THE COUNTRY AND DRIVE AWAY BEST TALENT TO OTHER COUNTRIES ESPECIALLY ABL IS ABOUT TO START. WAKE UP PBA OFFICIALS !......

  23. kid glam rock // October 5, 2009 11:13 PM

nice game. sana lang wala ng masyadong pulitika sa basketball sa pilipinas. tigil na yang pag aagawan kay japeth. gusto nya maglaro for the country let, let him. pinoy pride kesa sa company pride! entertainment na lang masyado ang PBA ngayon. pera na lang ang inspiration ng mga taga PBA ngayon. im waiting for slaughter, fajardo and the rest of the fresh recruits.

to burger king, asking pba to ban japeth for life is such a bad call. let him play for the national team. napaka crab mentality naman ng trip nyo e.

  24. Mr. Ponte // October 5, 2009 11:14 PM

Toroman's system is shown on how the Smart Gilas players performed tonight. In a short time, he made these amateur team into a FIBA-Asia contender. This team will be a team to watch on next year's Asian Games.

  25. BayanNgKahihiyan // October 5, 2009 11:16 PM

so nakita nyo na kung baket wala kayong alam sa basketball.... wahahahah nauna kc panghuhusga nyo.... wahahahaha I pity those critic....

  26. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:20 PM

Galing talaga ng SBP... keep up the good work.

  27. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:21 PM

Powerade is consistent. Less assists, Low fg percentage. This is because we're trying the NBA brand of play. Imagine merging the 2, the talent and Rajko's system. Smart Gilas' brand of basketball is enjoying to watch and very effective. Galing! Congrats! Pinoy, mabuhay ka!

  28. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:21 PM

im a gilas fan nice game, powerade is really undermanned team.. i feel sorry for them but gilas keep on improving sana wala na away between this two ballclubs.. nice game for charity..

  29. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:22 PM

    Japeth Aguilar outscored CJ Giles...
Wow!
    di-makatao nila! Wahahaha!

A Filipino outperforming an NBA Draftee in terms of points (not rebounds, kase more of small forward talaga si Aguilar). Not bad at all.

Burger King should HOLD ON sa draft rights nila kay Japeth Aguilar and dont do anything na di TAMA o di MAKA-TAO against the JAPETH, because AGUILAR will still improve in the coming years.

  30. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:24 PM

I hope PBA will finally realize that basketball is a TEAM GAME. Your system have underscored that TEAM PLAY wins games! CONGRATULATIONS and MORE POWER!

  35. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:26 PM

    Congratz SBP!
This team is on the right track... Imagine without Rabeh Al-Huisaini 6'7'', Greg Slaughter 6'11'' Or a Junmar Fajardo 6'9'' plus Chris Lutz 6'3''... I think this is a team to beat... For Powerade Team Pilipinas no more excuses, because Smart Gilas Team is not also complete..
One thing I notice about Coach Toroman aside from their team game is that he maximize the talent of his best players.. and he knows who's his key players.. Unlike Powerade Team, every player must be fully divided in terms of minutes play.. because all of them are in a superstar status.. while Smart Gilas accepts everybodies role.. Go Smart Gilas!! Great Game Gilas Players especially Giles, Aguilar, Casio And Ababou.. GOD Bless..

I am not yet convinced that the smart gilas NOW 2009 is much better to the PBA all star.. yes I believe tlgang natalo nila powerade.. Wat is in Powerade..??? yeng guioa is full of pride.. from the start there's a lot of player like alapag and hontiveros that did not make to the team.. in terms of system i give Guiao system a failing grade 30/100,, he did not adjust on international competition.. he just let his system be it until the end,, i mean literally until gilas vs powerade team. i do believe if only tim cone or chot it will be a very different situation.( oops d pa naglaro kelly ) or if nangyari c toroman ang nag handle national team using pba players.. vs gilas?? wat will be the result.. ??? 2 years pa dito gilas so i think they will face each other again.. maybe in all star game 2010. gilas vs pba.. think pba will win.. it will be a different story.. and it will be more different story if they face china, lebanon. jordan, iran, korea...

  50. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:46 PM

Smart Gilas really has a huge upside. They are nowhere near their expectations as a team yet but they've already shown up the All-Pro squad. And they are still a work in progress.

Of course, Powerade will say they didn't have time to practice and all that... or that they were missing players....

But Smart Gilas also hasn't been complete for quite some time. Ababou, Aldrech Ramos, and even Barroca were busy playing for their UAAP teams up until the Final Four (OK, in Barroca's case, up until Paranoid Capacio's accusations...) And they are still missing the likes of Paul Lee and Rabeh Al Husseini both playing in the UAAP Finals.

Guiao will say CJ Giles was an import blah blah...

But they were shown up by Aguilar whom Guiao and the Pros didn't have faith in during their stint in Tianjin, Ballesteros who outmuscled and outhustled Raymundo, Taulava and Thoss, There was the ball movement and the unselfish team work, and the perimeter shooting of Casio, Tiu, Ababou and Ramos. Even Barroca who was having an off night took on the PBA's premiere One-on-one player in a one-on-one isolation play and burned Willie Miller.

The Smart Gilas team is far from being an internationally competitive team but they are progressing well. Remember, this is a three year program. Imagine what happens when Toroman gets Chris Lutz, Junmar Fajardo, some more Fil-Ams, PauL Lee and maybe even Elmer Espiritu (potentially a defensive demon!)

As an aside, I'm from Ateneo but I have doubts that Rabeh Al Husseini is a good fit. After he asked for a clause that he wants to play in the PBA, it shows where his head really is. I say let him go to the pros, like Rico Maierhoffer did.

As i said in my facebook wall, gilas will maul rp-powerade..

Basketball is a TEAM SPORT. You don't win with individual talents. You need a cohesive team that knows exactly the smell of each other.

You put all the superstars (kuno!) of PBA + one bald coach, they won't beat gilas. They never will (Unless they are in the boxing ring). If one on one yan, baka manalo pa. Pero this is a TEAM SPORT and TEAM ALWAYS WINS...

    Madam Auring.

  52. Anonymous // October 5, 2009 11:47 PM

Congratulations for a statement win SBP and SMART Gilas ! Kudos to Coach Toroman, you will lead us to the promised land just like what you did with Iran. With this game, we can already see the seeds that you have sowed on our young players. They stick with the system and just continuously grind out the opponent from the inside and also from the outside. I can't imagine seeing these young boys 1 year from now during the Asian Games. The motion offense and the harmony is there, it was like a beautifully orchestrated classical music and the conductor was Toroman. On the other hand, we have also witnessed the downfall of the PBA style of play and why in the past 10 years we have not succeeded in winning convincingly on the international stage. The PBA players have already developed bad habits in their tactics which affects the overall flow of any coaches strategy during the game. Again Chemistry won over individual talents. This is indeed a reality check for the PBA but a good news overall for the development of our future Basketball National team. I believe personally that at 40% this team can already beat the likes of Korea, Jordan and Lebanon regularly. It would take more improvement and additional talent to beat Either Iran or China in the next 2 years. The future is so Bright for SMART gilas and I gotta wear shades Dudes . . !! - Allanboy

grabe galing ng gilas..i watch the game live at the areneta..nakaupo kmi behind sa bench ng gilas..walng binatbat pba bulok..tinalo ng amateurs..kahit sbhin may import malakas tlga.. isa lng si giles kaya nya kahit tatlo smabay...puro amatuers pa kakampi nya samantalang selection na yung pba..
walang excuse yun...may import kuno? ano nman ngayon..talo lng tlaga PBA..fans din ako ng powerade "DATI".. in fact i support them when they compete in fiba asia in tianjin..
but when i saw the way gilas played..WOW THIS IS A MUCH BETTER TEAM THAN POWERADE sa live pa yun..grabe yung mga play alam ng players kung san ipapasa yung bola..di cla kanya kanya..and they have a lot of shooters, even the center giles can shoot outside at sobrang sipag pa, to get a lose ball and rebound, and JAPETH wow..nice game, last time i saw him play puro dunk lng sya but this time he can also shoot 3 point shot..in fact naka tatlong triples yta..ang laki kaagad ng inimproved nya..

I have been telling people all a long that JApeth Aguilar is more suited as a Small forward and this is not so bad. Imagine a 6'9 Arwind Santos ??? And he can improve more under Toroman, even Toroman agrees that Japeth is barely playing his potential right now. Japeth's Talent was there as clear as day and everyone who watch the game can now pinch themselves to the reality that we have never had a big man as versatile and as talented as Japeth Before . . .The best five that I can think of right now if all the players for SMART gilas become available are:

    Center - CJ Giles 6'11
Power Forward - Rabeh Al Hussaini 6'7
Small Forward - Japeth AGuilar 6'10
Shooting Guard - Dylan Ababou 6'3
Point Guard - Mark Barocca 5'

    Coming off the bench are:

    JunMar Fajardo
    Stanley Pringle
    Chris Lutz
    Greg Slaughter
    Sean Anthony
    Paul Lee/Casio
    Baracael/Tiu

Have you seen how those young boys played so confidently and so composed compared to the panic stricken PBA squad ??? It was like watching Jordan beat the Powerade team in their Jones cup match . . . .40% palang ang ipinakita ng SMART Gilas . . .Kahit hindi pa sumali si Al Hussaini ok lang kasi nanjan pa si JunMar Fajardo and meron pang mga big man role players like Greg Slaughter, Aldrech Ramos and Jason Ballesteros . . .Congrats sa SBP ! Good job

    ------------------------------------------------

systema ang dahilan! magaling ang systema ng smart-gilas, they play as a team. sabihin mo...bakit natalo ang USA vs puerto rico in 2004? systema tol! mahirap ba intendihin yun? LOL gagaling pa ang smart gilas...in 2010 against PBA they might double or triple the margin. wag nalang kayong mainis at natalo PBA nyo. magsaya nalang kayo kasi may ilalalaban na tayo sa ibang bansa. mabuhay smart-gilas! mabuhay ang Pilipinas!

    Dear PBA fans,

    1. Hindi kumpleto ang players namin
    2. Kulang kami sa practice
    3. Wala kaming import
    4. Wala sa line-up namin si Mark Caguioa
    5. Obsolete na ang sistema ko

    Sincerely yours,
    Coach Yeng Guiao

  67. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 12:14 AM

Sabi nila may import daw yung smart Gilas kya nanalo pero bale wala yun kasi Powerade can actually beat Pba teams na may Professional players with imports pa. Also Powerade Rp team Beat a team na puro imports o americans before they went to Tianjin di ba!! I mean kahit ba sabihin nila na kulang sa practice and all the reasons the PBA backed national team should have been more professional. That only shows that the PBA system which is a copycat of Nba is deteriorating! dyan nauso ang paistaran!! tsaka I think marami pa maiimprove mga players ng Gilas it's only 50% of their potentials!! Imagine if Japeth becomes quicker pa and learns more moves inside and out! also syempre nung umpisa may kabog pa sa dib dib yung gilas di ba! yet tinambakan nila Powerade RP team That only shows that coach Toroman is a good motivator teacher and has an excellent coaching system!! Goodluck Gilas!! and to Mr Lito Alvarez pls let Japeth go!!...........It's for the future of Pinoy basketball

  68. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 12:16 AM

Mga tols eto ang opinion ko lang. Sila Baracael, JV Casio and even Chri Tiu are not PBA materials pero sa systema ni Toroman eh nag shine silang lahat kasi nga they fit the system . . .Oo individually kakainin ng buong buo ng mga PBA players ang SMART gilas kung one on one ang laban pero basketball is a team sport and the PBA loss just proves na walang contribution ang PBA sa development ng basketball sa pinas ! Nuff Said - Allanboy

  69. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 12:18 AM

ang pnag uusapan kasi dito because we are divided tlaga tau lang... un na nga system.. kaya natalo ang USA vs perto rico, vs greece sa intl competition.. wat we hav here in the philippines is we hav two.. so if we play as one in forming a national team so it will be better.. and it is the best also for the unity of our basketball pilipinas. if under coach toroman, nandyan n yan.. and the selection is pba selection plus talented aguilar, and naturalized big guy.. i think its the best.. this gilas will climb a very hard mountain in able to have olympic spot..

  70. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 12:20 AM

Nakakaawa panooring yung POWER?ade team kanina. di nila masolusyunan ang high screen and roll ng Gilas :P Naturingan kayong professional players kaya please don't make excuses. He's still teaching the principles sa bench players niya. Effective teacher siya and motivator. Unlike someone na puro mura maririnig mo. And take note! sa TV coverage mairinig mo yung malutong niyang pagmumura :P hehe nuff said PBA got served!!!

  71. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 12:27 AM

Powerade game is obsolete..we need European type of plays like the system of Toroman, not the system of Americans like Norman Black with Ateneo.

  73. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 12:29 AM

This is proof that a FIBA WORLD and OLYMPIC Level Coach is far more better than an INTER-BARANGAY Level Coach with Professional Level Players!

I do believe that Chot Reyes is better in selecting players and in managing a team compared to Yeng Guiao.

But still Toroman is more experienced than Chot Reyes.

    What is to learn here?
Yeng Guiao should stop jeopardizing Philippine Basketball and admit that PBA-style approach to International Basketball is obsolete.

hndi mo ba nabasa ------------------- un article di ba nkalagay nga dun SISTEMA un snasabi nya!!! eh un na nga we are divided kung pba selection then system ni toroman ang ggamitin!!! that is the best TEAM we can produce.. kaya lang nag ka GILAS kasi we are divided!!! kitams talaga, busog na busog si toroman at ang gilas nuh? inulam tlaga nila ang mga Pros ng PBA.hahaha, pangit kasi ng coaching style ni yeng, biruin mo si arboleda pati reyes pa ung kinuha?! ang galing tlga nya.hahahaha. pde nya namang kunin si alapag, hontiveros, or ritualo.na pamatay sa 3pts. di katulad ng line up nya ngaun puro naman slashers no shooting except lang kay J.yap. amoy supalpal tuloy ang powerade sa Gilas.kala ko nga volleyball na ung laro e.haha.galing ng gilas pagdating sa ballmovement, dahil yan kay toroman. He has the spirit of winning kaya sige lng ng sige si toroman,at mas maganda dahil toroman has a goal unlike Yeng na puro campaigns ang anaatupag.haha.kalbo na kasi.

grabe nman ang powerade .. kung ano na nman ang dahilan, guys kahit 2 or 3 days lang ang praktis nyo, dapat di nman ganun kalaki ang lamang, and the fact that PBA is coming this october, all the players should be on their peak, and besides professional players na kau, konti shoot around lang yan and some pointers,(kaso nga lang mejo si coach ang problem)hehe!sana pumili na lang ng PBA ng all star team vs Smart Gilas .. u can see the difference in the style of coach Toroman ... iba talaga.

  87. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 1:02 AM

The Final frontline of the team would likely be...

CJ Giles, Japeth Aguilar, Greg Slaughter, Ballesteros (is he 6-7?), Aldrech Ramos and Junmar Fajardo. (If Al Husseini matures, maybe puwede na rin)

At the swing man slot, where Aguilar might play also, we can see Baracael and Aldrech Ramos spend some time here but they need some faster and taller guys .

Two guards: Christ Lutz and Dylan Ababou. Maybe Elmer Espiritu if he improves his ball handling (but he can be a defensive demon and a fast break player...)

Now, while I think Barocca, Tiu and Casio complement each othe (Barocca is the most aggressive and talented, Casio is the most complete, Tiu is the steadiest) we may need to see a Paul Lee in there at some point. A pure point guard. All three are converted SGs with Tiu being the best passer but most limited moves.

Meanwhile, maybe they should also start getting HS phenom Kiefer Ravena, UP's Mikee Reyes and UST's Jeric Teng to practice under Toroman just to prepare for the future...

Guys from the PBA they should loan to GILAS.

Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams, Asi Taulava and Ren Ren Ritualo. Jimmy is a pass first guard who can play within a system and hit bug numbers. Williams and Asi will HUSTLE without needing to score and play their roles. Ritualo? Well he will shoot the lights out and doesn't need the ball in his hands, will play the screens, pop and shoot. Although Asi really doesn't have that much mileage left...

Lahat nung iba pang pro game lang talaga. Off the dribble players... Yap sana pero walang heart yan. Ever since UE days... si Tubid at Artadi ang may heart nung time nila.

Nag stagnate ang basketball sa pilipinas for 10 years because of the PBA. Ang SMART gilas with a new Philosophy will now revolutionize the game. With the Pinoy's natural talent and Toroman's system, our country will be back as one of the powerhouses in Asia once again . . .Go SBP

  89. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 1:11 AM

LOL.

Go Smart Gilas. Believe, Trust and Learn the system because it can take you farther!!!

  90. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 1:13 AM

it was a game won by gilas i admit it was a good game impressive players cla barroca pero pinaka gus2 ko si ababou... pero depleted and out of sync team pilipinas and as i predicted play 1 kay giles play 2 kay giles ulit....still a loss is a loss no complains...still think na kung PBA players ang bubuo sa team pilipinas with proper training and cohesion matatalo natin powerhouse ng asia... un nga lng pro players need to make that sacrifice

  91. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 1:19 AM

and besides hilaw na hilaw pa maglaro si japeth eh nakita mo naman hnde naman xa dominating bigman eh he shoots 3 pointers eh and giles is not that good asi almost took him out sa pa spin move spin move lng eh what if si ehadadi na un eh d nalintikan na....and ang style ni toroman eh ibabad ang malalakas un sistema na un prone sa injury eh kung ma injure si giles patay na

  98. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 2:14 AM

what do Manny Pacquiao and Smart-Gilas RP Team have in common?!?

they both have a good coach with a good system..

nakita ni freddie roach na may talent si manny pacquiao kaya lalo pa nya itong hinasa.. hindi sya nagmadali.. little by little, fight after fight, nag-iimprove ang laro ni pacquiao.. roach believed na magiging champion si pacquiao someday.. and he was right.. hindi lang 1-division champ, kundi 5-division champion..

pareho sila ni Rajko Toroman.. he wanted to help us improve our brand of play na hindi tatalab sa international competitions.. nakita nya na may talent ang RP basketball players.. kaya in less than a year, hinasa pa nya lalo yun.. and we've seen the progress kanina..

its about time to reclaim our spot in Asian Basketball.. watch out China, Iran, Lebanon, Jordan and Korea.. ilang taon na rin tayong minamaliit ng mga bansang yan pag dating sa basketball.. its about time to give them one hell of a game..

to the PBA: sana tigilan na ang politics sa inyong board of governors.. banning japeth to play in the PBA is not his loss, its YOUR loss.. aanhin nyo ang pera nyo kung wala sa inyo ang magagaling na players..

  99. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 2:59 AM

  101. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 3:34 AM

    I've watched the game live!!!
    Grabe!! ibang klase!! the moment
they begin to score!! nag boom kaagad
ang offense nila. tapos, ang daming series
ng screens. 7 to 8 maximum before they take
the shot. tapos consistent pa sa shooting.
mas accurate pa nga yung big man nila outside
the paint, kesa sa mag lay-up eh. kahit wala
simply because of the system. grabe si Aguilar,
24 points. 3/5 pa sa 3 point line. And what makes me impress more is di pa sila kumpleto.
wala pa halos 40-50% na players na gusto ni Toroman. just imagine kung kumpleto na yung team ni Toroman, kahit may practice pa Powerade at kumpleto line up nila, dadaanan lang sila ng Smart Gilas. Pano pa kung in 2 to 3 years time??
I bet, they can even beat China and Iran by then.

I have been telling people all a long that JApeth Aguilar is more suited as a Small forward and this is not so bad. Imagine a 6'9 Arwind Santos ??? And he can improve more under Toroman, even Toroman agrees that Japeth is barely playing his potential right now. Japeth's Talent was there as clear as day and everyone who watch the game can now pinch themselves to the reality that we have never had a big man as versatile and as talented as Japeth Before . . .The best five that I can think of right now if all the players for SMART gilas become available are:

    Center - CJ Giles 6'11
Power Forward - Rabeh Al Hussaini 6'7
Small Forward - Japeth AGuilar 6'10
Shooting Guard - Dylan Ababou 6'3
Point Guard - Mark Barocca 5'

    Coming off the bench are:

    JunMar Fajardo
    Stanley Pringle
    Chris Lutz
    Greg Slaughter
    Sean Anthony
    Paul Lee/Casio
    Baracael/Tiu

The PBA Powerade players really tried their best to win but as you see they lost their steam after Smart Gilas showed their tremendous teamwork and superioty in every aspect of the game.

Talo talaga walang magawa parang kalaban nila ang Iran at JOrdan.

I was just a little bit disappointed because I expect Junmar Fajardo, Hussaini and Slaugther etc because I have not seen these players play.

With some addition of good good players as Toroman is always looking for, this team will be unbeatable in the Future.

Sana manalo ang Filipino sa Asia.

  117. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 7:23 AM

NICE WORK BY SMART GILAS......IT'S NOT THE SCORE THAT IMPRESSED ME.....SINCE WE ALL KNOW POWERADE DIDNT EVEN PRACTICE SERIOUSLY SO IT WASNT A SURPRISE.....

IT'S THEIR GREAT TEAMWORK THAT WAS REALLY IMPRESIVE......AND I THINK THEY'LL BUILD UP BETTER TEAMWORK WHEN THEY PLAY MORE IN PBA

I THINK THE STRONG PBA TEAMS WILL BE A TOUGHER CHALLENGE FOR THEM THAN THE POWERADE WHO HAD NO TEAMWROK AT ALL AND LOOKED VERY LOST IN THE GAME

I NEVER BELIEVED IN SMART GILAS UNTIL NOW

  120. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 7:29 AM

kahit may import ang gilas.. eh ung powerade Fil Am halos lahat ah, samatalang ung gilas na lumaban kagabi mga dugong pinoy talaga at isang import... tsaka isipin nyo bayan ng superstars kuno tinalo ng mga amateurs?? eh kung ganyan ang gawin ng NBA Redeem team 2008 with only 1 day of practice or kahait wala pa nga eh vs ung mga best ng college basketball sa amerika sa tingin nyo sinong mananalao? dba NBA Redeem parin... hayz nakakahiya ang PABA

  121. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 7:32 AM

Smart Gilas still need more good good big men incase Japeth or Giles are in foul trouble.

    at FIBA Asia.

  122. alecks // October 6, 2009 7:34 AM

much better if they let dillinger and norwood suit up with the Smart Gilas if they are interested. I Think Toroman see the Talent, skill and the potential of the Filipino basketers.. thats why he took the Job for the National team and he even offer his help for the Powerade team pilipinas but Yeng Guiao denied him....

  123. Pierre // October 6, 2009 8:03 AM

PBA fans has a lot of stupid excuses like Gilas played with an import, but come to think of it, Powerade was also parading an IMPORT in ASI TAULAVA. He is not filipino, if you really are fans of the PBA you should have known that. Smart played with a lot of pride and heart, and look at how the PBA players played, walang puso.

  124. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 8:23 AM

i watched the game lastnight. grabe mga ginawa ng smart-gilas. team effort talaga. bawat player may kanya kanyang play. kaya lahat ng player nila may score.

kudos smart-gilas. kitang kita ung brAND of play nila.

napansin ko rin na all players of gilas improved their shooting. nice game smart-gilas.

can't wait to see an action against BGK. The two team that can beat Slingers. LOL.

para sa mga ubos-siglang smart gilas fans!

alam nyo, compare the game with the game of a child against his older brother.

syempre, to build more confidence for the younger child, what do you think the older brother does?

    answer please?!?

    be analytic guys!!

    THINK HARD AND THINK DEEP!!

    according to Mr. Henson:
1.(in the early 1st quarter)experience daw talaga ang magpapanalo sa PBA Powerless...asan na? wala naman.
2.the he said that,,,"it's nice to play with an import???" ano bulag ka ba Mr. Henson??? What about Taulava, Delinger, Norwood??? They're not pure pinoys, right? Look at Smart Gilas all of them except Giles are "PURE" players playing from the philippines.
3.After the game, he asked if the "TORCH" has been passed already to the smart gilas team?... and he answered "i think NOT YET"...and suddenly with a blink of an eye natauhan siguro...he said "maybe YES"....mr. henson, unang una walang torch na maibigay ang PBA superstars mo kuno...kasi wala naman silang nagawang maganda for Phil Basketball puro talo sa international competition.

***it just shows how the tv commentators are favoring their PBA Powerless team and how they look down the capacity and ability of smart gilas...kon sa bagay kon wala ng manonood ng PBA,,,wala na rin silang trabaho...buti sana kon tanggapin sila sa ESPN...tsk..tsk

...I'm soooo impressed with you guys (SMART Gilas)sana mag improve pa kayo...at wag na sana kayong sumali dyan sa PBA...you will earn NOTHING from them. Special mention lang po ky Japeth Aguilar and Mark Baroca because they have a bit of a problem....sana tuloy-tuloy na kayo sa smart gilas and i'm sure the filipino people will be very very proud of you....good luck to all of you...GO GO GO SMART GILAS!!!

  131. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 8:47 AM

The weaknesses of the Powerade Team in Tianjin was all over the stat sheet yesterday. Considering Pros sila, very low FG percentage, Low Free Throw Percentage, Lots of 1-on-1, Very Low Assists numbers, etc. We wouldn't win in international competition with these numbers. Now look at the Gilas stats, all opposite! Walang tirang pilit, thus high FG percentage, wala masyado 1-on-1, sure ball sa Free Throw. Powerade players used lots of dribbles (lalo na si Dilinger) and less passes, while baliktad sa Gilas. Gilas' individual talents will still improve, and just imagine with more cohesiveness and team work, they are in the right track. No wonder Toroman jumped to Pilipinas from Iran, he seen the talent in the Pinoys, all we need is just a system of unity. Teamwork! - Emon

  132. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 8:48 AM

nakita nyo nman ang systema ng gilas compared sa powerade,,ang PBA kc naglalaro sa pera lng wla mga puso dapat we have to support a developmental team like gilas we have to focus na lng sa kanila rader than selecting PBA players eh, mas ok ang systema na torman pang international tlga unlike yeng wla nman sya alam when it comes to international plays eh ang mga PBA players pro papogi lng ang alam na gwin sa court...

makkita nyo kng marunong tlga kyo manood ng basketball ndi basta pro dribol at flashy moves ang ttignan ntin, sobrang galing ng systema ng smart gilas team hands up tlga pinakita nila, wla tlgang kwenta ang mga PBA players...pro dribol at 1 on 1 plays lng ang alam nila gawin w/c ndi uubra sa international plays...

  135. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 9:02 AM

    ----------

tatawa nlng aq.. nyahahaha! just a diehard fan of PBA.. knows nothing in basketball.. ung mga last minute ng game.. even jayles and agweyar was not on the court.. the Gilas never panicked.. they managed to retain the lead..

The future is so Bright for SMART gilas and I gotta wear shades Dudes . . !! - Allanboy

Great Job by everybody, to the PBA, SBP, Liga, PBL, NCAA and UAAP. Hats off to all the players, for spreading a lot of goodwill and for helping the victims of ONDOY.

I hope everybody here understands the road to the Olympics is still a very long one. Smart-Gilas has still a lot of work ahead of them. They were impressive last night esp. Japeth. I guess he finally showed Yeng/Burger King, how he should have been used. He reminds me of Yi Jianlan with better hops/talent.

As for the PBA and all the other leagues including the Universities, they should seriously look at Toroman's system. It has a very European feel to it (although not as physical). Bagay sa pinoy, a lot of motion and it's fast and loose.

i watched the game on TV last night, ang galing! international ball talaga, the high pick and rolls, the drive and kick-outs, the ball rotation. reminds me a little of the spanish national team. to those haters who says everything ends and begins with CJ Giles, you are mistaken. everything begins with the fast guards and the fast-paced style of play, yung wala masyadong low-posting, and and ends with the perimeter shooting nina aguilar, ramos, ababou, tiu, etc. now all we need are slashers and rim finishers in the mold of rudy fernandez and JC navarro of spain. GO GO GO SMART Gilas!!!

According to PBA die hard fans, Smart Gilas won coz they have an import GIles. Iba fake pa nga na Pinoy na they pass as Filipino. Line up ng powerade mga import posing as Filipinos. Look at Jared, Norwood, Toss, Taulava, Pinissi, etc. The Smart Gilas team has only one import si Giles. Lahat purong pinoy naglaro kagabi.

PBA die hard fans, its in the coaching and system. You can see the ball movement and plays of Smart Gilas. You noticed last night Smart Gilas used up the shot clock a lot every ball possesion before they took a shot.

Last even without Giles & Aguilar on the court the Smart Team never panicked and even maintained the big lead. What I noticed also about last night's game was the teamwork and camaraderie by the players of Smart Gilas.

Eala assured everyone that Lutz will join the team in March of 2010 and will be travelling with Smart Gilas in Australia to study the Australian defensive strategy and then to Serbia to sharpen their offensive patterns then off to the US to compete with the college teams before plunging for the main event --- The Asian Games !! Don't worry, Lutz our deadliest shooter, the more athletic version of Caidic and Chip Engelland will be wearing the Smart Gilas uniform until 2011 to help us qualify for an olympic slot . . .- Allanboy

Grabe and Offense and Defense nyo na pinakita kagabi sa ARANETA Smart Gilas...yan ang mag papanalo sa atin...just believe in your system, coach and depend on one another...d kayo papalpak sa International Tourney...may it be a learning process...ok lang matalo kayo in the future...basta importante you learn from the mistakes and the pain it brings you and our whole country who are always supporting you...Gaganda ren ang lahat and nakikita na namin yun dahil d kami mga bulag na FANS...ingit lang mga ibang coaches kay Toroman dahil mahusay talaga parang si Ron Jacobs den mahusay at may tiwala kung ano man ang meron sya...problema kasi ng PBA ay P for PRIDE... to the extent na kinakain na sila nito...wala na ren yung Passion and Dedication dahil puro M for Money na lang Tumatakbo sa isip nila...tapos may BAN pang naiisip tong si Alvarez at siempre may gatong den si Guiao dyan...such loosers...kaya wala na asenso PBA ngayon...walang UNITY at gusto sila masunod...dapat sa inyo wag na supportahan....kaso kawawa den naman yung mga natitira pang mga PBA players na may passion and dedication pa ren....basta more power to SBP...MVP,NOLI,TOROMOMAN,GILAS....we support you all the way

  164. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 11:05 AM

Sobra naman kayung manlait sa PBA... D ba nung
and gilas?
    team.... its a shame...
Pero on d other side, maganda yung style ni toroman.. Dapat sya sana coach natin sa china.
    baka me pag-asa pa.

    ================================================

Smart Gilas is the real deal. Maganda sistema, maganda teamwork. Kelangan mag-gel yung team. Tingnan niyo yung Greece. Di ganun kagagaling yung players pero consistent silang malakas. Swerte na yung teams like USA and Spain na maraming talented players.

Smart Gilas proved that mas ok ang teamwork kesa individual skills. 3 year program 'to, so malayo ang mararating.

Old school kumbaga.

Oi pare 98-69 = 29 points. So kahit tanggalin yung 21 points ni Giles lamang paren ng 8 points and SMART GILAS.

Kung close game lang sana baka pwede pa ang dahilan niyo na may import but the fact is kahit wala si Giles sa court mas magaling paren laro ng Gilas. At sobra talagang tinambakan ang PBA Powerade. Imagine niyo 30 points. "Professionals" vs Amateurs. Medyo nakakahiya talaga.

Halatang kulang ng pride or killer instinct and Powerade.

smart gilas will dominate pba kasi ang laki ng front court nila tatambakin pba nito ng tag 20 - 30 pts..wow Japeth is impressive may chance tong batang to sa Nba kasi may outside shooting siya he should put more work in his outside shooting..turns out kaya pala ayaw ni japeth mag laro sa Burger king kasi pag andun siya sigureadong ipapacentro siya ni kalbo ..japeth is more of a fineese sharpshooting bigman more of a dirk nowitzki type of player...and na expose talaga bigtime ang powerade puro kasi yabang at porma eh ang yayabang pa nung simula ng game.. yan tuloy pag 2nd quarter ndi na nakaporma si james yap tsaka kerby raymundo laging sapul kay giles .. may pazone def zone def pa sila patay tuloy sila sa 3pt shooting ni chris Tiu...GIlas will beat china and Iran ill bet my Gf on it..---EL-matador

  171. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 11:23 AM

Toroman's style reflects the respect for the game of basketball, which in essence is teamwork. We know that the system works and have proven to be better than the PBA's brand of play; gate receipts could suffer, buti na lang guest team ang smart gilas at for sure may hatak na fans ito. Go Smart Gilas! Relive the old glory of Phil basketball!

It's all Toroman's System. I agree with one of the comments above, mix of both. Apply Toroman's system (make him as RP coach), get some Powerade players (we need big guards in international play). Expose this team to lot's of international competition. We always have the shooting whether Powerade or Gilas because we are comfortable playing in Araneta or any where in the Philippines. But once we step outside the country, atmosphere is so different. Environment, crowd, court, weather, rules, opponent etc. are all different.

    98 ang SMART GILAS
    69 ang POWERADE

    I-minus ang points ni Giles.
    Panalo pa rin ang SMART GILAS ( 98 - 22 = 76 )

76 - 69 ang Score kapag wala si GILES.
Panalo pa rin ang SMART GILAS.

  180. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 11:40 AM

    smart gilas=team play tas powerade=individual.
tas eto pa. smart gilas= good GROUP of individuals tas powerade=group of good INDIVIDUALS. see the difference? basketball to at malaking factor if you can let other players be involved in every play. powerade walang basketball iq. puro show-off. lame excuse masyado ang rason na "may import" kasi kalahati naman ng line-up ng powerade ay puro fil-ams. sa smart gilas ba may fil-ams? at isipin nyo, kung ang redeem team ng US, given na 1 beses lang sila ngpractice, ay lalaban sa mga best players from NCAA with isang import, let's say si gasol o dirk, sino kaya ang mananalo? ;) PBA is known as the league kung saan naglalaro ang magagaling sa pinas. so dapat walang excuses kung matalo sila. kudos sa smart gilas! tae ka kalbs! :D

  181. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 11:41 AM

Out of heart pede pa.

congrats to the smart-gilas galing nyo grabe...

I heard Tyler LAmb is half pinoy but meron nagsasabi half THAi daw ano ba talga?? lakas ng pinas pagnakuha sya recruit daw sya ng UCLA and may ibubuga talga....

bottomline is SMART GILAS beat POWERADE-RP sana wala na excuses winning is winning... kahit sabhin pa na may import ang gilas lookat the playsers ng gilas college players dba?? and ang edad while ang powerade ilang taon na ba nakikipaglaro sa mga imports???hheheheheh

  191. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 12:18 PM

kait walng praktis since PRO sila wala un madali dapat sila makapagadjust.... may injuries??? i doubt it kita mo laro nila bigay na bigay....

WHAT A GAME LAST NIGHT! I WATCHED IT LIVE. I THOUGHT THE POWERADE TEAM WILL EAT THE SMART GILAS TEAM ALIVE. IT'S THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

TO BURGER KING & PBA: PLEASE ALLOW JAPETH AGUILAR TO PLAY IN THE PBA. FOR ONCE, BE NATIONALISTIC!!!

JAPETH'S SKILLS WILL BE HONED BETTER UNDER COACH TOROMAN. THIS WILL BE GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY. BURGER KING CAN GET HIM AFTER 3 YEARS. MAS MAGALING NA SYA BY THEN. YOU WILL REAP THE BENEFITS OF HAVING JAPETH IN YOUR TEAM.

COME ON GUYS, PARA SA BAYAN!

  193. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 12:35 PM

    TO BURGER KING AND PBA:

PLEASE ALLOW JAPETH AGUILAR TO PLAY FOR SMART GILAS IN THE PBA. HE WILL IMPROVE HIS SKILLS MORE AND THIS WILL BE GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY.

FOR ONCE, BE NATIONALISTIC NAMAN! PARA SA BAYAN!

MAS EXCITING ANG PBA IF THE SMART GILAS TEAM WILL PLAY WITH JAPETH.

COACH YENG: NOW YOU KNOW HOW YOU SHOULD HAVE USED JAPETH IN THE POWERADE TEAM. BY THE WAY, WE KNEW YOU WERE IMPRESSED. PWEDE KA NAMAN PUMALAKPAK KAGABI EH.

    *************************************

To all PBA fans na nanglalait sa Smart Gilas you have to accept the fact that PBA's brand of play is not suited for an international games. Yes they have the individual talents and skills but the way they palyed as a team is good for PBA only, just for entertainment and money. Walang ibubuga pag dating sa international competition not unless they have to make changes in their system right now.

  196. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 12:45 PM

Why did Powerade lose well maganda system ni Rajko and mataas ang kompynasa ng smart gilas team kasi nandun si Giles sa kanilang team... Kung wala si Giles sa team which is not a pinoy maybe the outcome would be different kasi alam naman natin ang FIBA rules na no 3 seconds defensive violation.. All giles do is to wait in the middle for a shot block or intimidate the scorer...

ACCORDING TO THE COMMENTATORS LAST NIGHT THERE ARE A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN THE COMING PBA CONFERENCE. I DEFINITELY AGREE. IT WILL BE VERY EXCITING TO WATCH HOW SMART GILAS WILL TRAMPLE THE PBA TEAMS. AFTER THE SMART GILAS STINT IN THE PBA. I WILL NOT WATCH ANY PBA GAME. I WILL ONLY FOLLOW THE SMART GILAS TEAM. THE COMMENTATORS WERE STILL PRAISING THE POWERLESS TEAM BECAUSE THEIR WORK IS AT STAKE. HOY YONG ATENEAN NA COMMENTATOR, YOU KNOW THAT TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE. AND THE TRUTH IS YOUR FUTURE IN THE PBA AS A COMMENTATOR IS ALL DARK. RATHER THAN MAKING EXCUSES ABOUT THE LOSS OF YOUR PBA POWERLESS TEAM WHY NOT ADMIT THE TRUTH THAT YOUR PBA PLAYERS ARE ALL SELF-PROCLAIMED TSUPERSTARS. THEY NEVER BROUGHT FAME TO OUR COUNTRY, INSTEAD THEY PUT US FILIPINOS IN THE BAD LIGHT WITH THEIR SELFISH STYLE OF PBA PLAYS!

  200. Anonymous // October 6, 2009 12:57 PM

I HOPE ALL BASKETBALL LOVING FILIPINOS WILL NOT ALLOW PBA TO FORM ANOTHER PBA TEAM TO REPRESENT OUR COUNTRY. EVER SINCE THEY REPRESENTED US IN INTERNATIONAL GAMES, THEY BRING NOTHING BUT SHAME TO US WITH THE WAY THEY SHOW THEIR SELFISH INDIVIDUAL PLAYS. WE WILL MARCH TO MENDIOLA AGAIN TO CALL FOR KALBONG HILAW(GUIAO) TO RESIGN AS A COACH. HE NEVER SHOWED US THE COACHING OF A LEARNED INTERNATIONAL COACH. HE IS ALSO VERY HAMBOG! HE SAID THAT BRAGGING RIGHTS IS AT STAKE IN THE GAME LAST NIGHT. HEHEHE NOW YOU WON YOUR BRAGGING RIGHTS KALBONG YENG...BRAG ALL YOUR EXUCESES IN WHY YOU LOSE WITH A 29 POINTS MARGIN TO AN AMATEUR TEAM.
