PBA anxious over hearing on Arboleda hitting incident

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) expressed discomfort over a House of Representatives hearing called by Manila Rep. Amado Bagatsing on the incident involving Burger King point guard Wynnie Arboleda and a spectator.

PBA chairman Lito Alvarez, also the Burger King team manager, said the hearing is no longer needed because the league has already imposed a severe punishment on the player while the aggrieved party has also filed a legal case against Arboleda.

The decision to call a hearing is untimely because the league has already imposed a rest-of-the-season ban on Arboleda and Wynnie has accepted the decision,” said Alvarez, one of the several personalities invited to attend the hearing.

[Aside from] that, mayroon ng pending case involving both the player and the fan,” added Alvarez, who will represent the PBA in the hearing because commissioner Sonny Barrios has a previous commitment.

Alvarez said that instead of dipping its fingers in this incident, Congress should rather focus on more serious problems the country is facing.

Arboleda was suspended without pay and will lose close to P3 million in salaries. The camp of Alain Katigbac, the fan who Arboleda attacked because of his alleged incessant taunting, wants a lifetime ban imposed on the Whopper point guard.

Bagatsing, head of the House Games and Amusements Committee, said he is “after the safety of the players and the fans.”

Katigbac, coaches Yeng Guiao of Burger King and Rajko Toroman of Smart Gilas, Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain, Smart Gilas team manager Noli Eala, Araneta Coliseum officials Sienna Olaso and Rene Cayetano and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas vice chairman Ricky Vargas were also invited along with Danny Ildefonso and Marlou Aquino, the PBA players who were also involved in a similar incident.

Arboleda, although he has been suspended the entire season, continued to stay in shape by becoming one of the Whoppers’ practice players.

Alvarez said on Monday the 32-year-old Arboleda could join the team’s scrimmage despite the suspension.

“He’s still welcome to join the team’s practice,” said Alvarez. “I even told him to attend the team’s practice three times a week to keep himself in good shape.”

Arboleda has two years left in his contract with Burger King. It is unclear whether the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, a son-in-law of team owner Bert Lina, will still be able to see action with the Whopper next season as management is mulling trade options.

Arboleda was almost shipped to Barako Bull after the incident, but the trade did not materialize because PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios has already imposed the ban.

We are still evaluating things kung maghahanap pa ng ibang point guard pero ramdam ng team ’yung kawalan niya,” said Alvarez.

We’re in constant discussion with coach Yeng and we might add one more player to help the team,” he added.

di na kailangan idiin pa si arboleda...ang mas importante ay ang batas na magbibigay assurance na ang PBA ay magiging safe para sa players at fans.

The incident involving arboleda and katigbak is a sad note in deed to both sides. But its just a reminder that either a player or a fan are still human and deserves the same respect each and everyone else deserves to get from one another. As a player we should also consider tha the fans are more likely carried away most of the time if not always by supporting their teams. But on the other hand, we as fans should also realize that we don't have the right to dehumanize and judge the players specially if we don't know who they really are outide the court. I do believe that Mr. Katigbak is a well educated person, but seeing how he disgraced himself by insulting to the extreme other players by using foul and judgemental words I thought otherwise. We are where we are because of our actions lead us to where we are now.

This issue is not a the end on both sides, clearly there is a deeper issue that must unravel and could involve the BK coaching staff and specifically Yeng Guiao. Yeng should be the one banned for the season if not from the league altogether, it was so obvious that he gave his players instructions to hurt the GILAS players to get his precious win . .. What a loser ! - Allanboy

wow umabot na pala sa ganito ung nangyari..

it all started with Yeng and Alvarez for not getting his Dirty Guard undercontrol... I do believe that Mr. Katigbak is a well educated person, but seeing how he manage himself to help stop the dirty game of Burger King while all the educated officials and chairman of the PBA just sat beside and watch and do nothing Like all the FANS who staYED MUM AND ARE AFRAID to voice out their dissatisfaction on a 35 year institution who can't stop a game or the players of the team who is out there to just hurt others>.Mr Katigbak is our true Filipino Hero is the bravest not like most of the cowards in the PBA and the Fans who supports and love dirty plays of the BK

  23. Anonymous // October 28, 2009 5:28 PM

congressional inquiry? si Barrios kinabahan ? hindi makaappear dahil sa previous comitment? what is more important? tinulak na lang kay Alvarez? wahahaha....sna ma ban yan PBA na yan

  24. Anonymous // October 28, 2009 5:34 PM

Congress should focus on more serious problems inside the PBA it seems like dirty players keeep prospering ..and should ask the comissioner to step down and should apologize to the PUBLIc with Yeng and Alvarez for their blunder and wanton disregard of basketball ehtics...dapat ikulung na yung tatlo na yan kasama si Wynne
this time they really did made a mockery of a 35 year institution..
