Willie Miller buried a booming three-pointer in the waning seconds that clinched Powerade-Team Pilipinas’ 77-70 thrilling win over Chinese-Taipei in the 25th FIBA-Asia men’s basketball championship Monday in Tianjin, China.

With the shot clock winding down and the Nationals holding on to a slim 72-70 lead, Miller dribbled the ball just atop the three-point area, waited for the seconds to tick away and then made his move by pulling off for a trey as Chinese-Taipei big man Tseng Wen-Ting Lei sagged on defense with 13.7 to go.

Nakababa iyung kamay kaya alam ko may pag-asang pumasok," said Miller of his game-clinching shot, the last of his perfect 5-of-5 stint from downtown. He finished with 17 points, behind the 23 of top scorer James Yap, who went 6-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Naka-tsamba lang," said the player who just a day before assured he wouldn’t have another poor shooting performance like the one he had in a 56-69 losing cause to South Korea.

Willie is one of the best shooters in the Philippines, so we expect him to make the shot," said coach Yeng Guiao of his No. 11 man whom the international press kept on referring to as “Miller Time."

But he’s just exceptional today."

The thrilling win pushed the Philippines within reach of making the quarterfinals of the tournament serving as the gateway for the 2010 World Basketball Championship in Turkey.

With the victory over an ousted team (against Sri Lanka) not carried over into the second phase of the eliminations, the Nationals now carry a 2-1 record and next meet defending champion Iran at 11:00 am. Tuesday.

They face Kuwait at 9 a.m. Wednesday for their final elimination round assignment.

One more win needed

I feel relieved because I think we have one foot in the door already in the top eight. Of course, we still need to assure ourselves by winning one more game, pero tingin ko kaya naman," said Guiao.

The Nationals were pounded inside by the Taiwanese, 38-16, but were extra hot from three-point land where they converted 15-of-30 for a high 50 percent shooting.

Miller and Yap both said they were hard on themselves during practice the other day after shooting a combined 3-of-18 from the floor in that loss to the Koreans.

Before Miller took charge, it was Yap who did the most damage for the Nationals, hitting four three-pointers – including three straight in one stretch - in the third period when Team Pilipinas finally grabbed the lead, 56-50.

JayJay Helterbrand’s long three-pointer off the board that hit the third quarter buzzer gave the Nationals their biggest lead at 62-54.

Chinese-Taipei came back strong, however, stringing eight straight points to open the final quarter, and then regained the upperhand on two free throws by Wu Tai Ho, 68-67, with 4:49 seconds left.

But Kerby Raymundo hit three straight free throws and Sonny Thoss made a side jumper as RP got back on top, 72-68.

Just when the Nationals appeared headed for the win, Lee Hsueh-Lin was fouled by Miller on transition for two free throws. He made both to pull the Taiwanese to within two.

Miller Time" took over from there.

The scores:

Philippines 77 – Yap 23, Miller 17, Thoss 8, Helterbrand 8, Baguio 6, Raymundo 5, Dillinger 3, Pennisi 3, Taulava 2, Norwood 2, Aguilar 0. Santos 0.

Chinese-Taipei 70 – Tseng 21, Lee 8, Chang 8, Lin 7, Tien 6, Chang Tsung-Hsien 6, Wu 6, Yang 4, Yang Chin-Min 2, Su 2.

Quarterscores: 16-21; 33-35; 62-54; 77-70

CAPISH!

A few days ago b4 the FIBa asia started there were so many people here asking the services of honteveros and alapag...and im one of those people...but now i came to realized that wat we saw on honteveros and alapag who were very effective then was 2 years ago in 2007 SMB RP. I think most us over see what the players are doing now bcoz we r thinking of what they did 2 years ago....

For my assesment of honteveros and alapag recently base on how they playED presently in PBA..i dont really think they can do what they did 2 years ago...honteveros and jimmy lost a couple of steps now...But i still go for Jimmy over JJ ( its only jimmy ang may kakayahan to break the ZOne )....even f jimmy lost a couple of steps now but he s still faster than JJ....for dondon over cyrus? i dont think so...dondon is more of a deliverate type of player, cyrus is damn fast...what i like about him is he keeps going and going...he barely stops and that should how we play in an international game...deliverate game like the style of tim cone is now out of date in this kind of tournament....imagine when we have a backcourt of dou of jimmy and cyrus...their disability in defense will be compensated well by their speed....of course the tournament is on going...this is just my fantasy players....GoodLuck RP.....i will support you forever and ever. For better or for worst...till death do my support will die. MABUHAY KA PINOY!

    -dON kONGkING

  16. Anonymous // August 10, 2009 10:29 AM

we really needs to put a lot of intensity in our game. Power, Speed, and determination in our hearts. And lets play pro, I mean, lets hit those medium range jump shot. Remember also that the 3 point line is nearer compare to those 3pt basket we made from our PBA games. If we play the kind of game we played on our previous game... Then lets say goodbye to our hopes and just go home. To Team Pilipinas... Goodluck & Godbless us All...

i think both deserve credit. YAP and MILLER.

Yap carried the team in the second and third quarter.

    Miller in the fourth.

Wow... MIller 5 out of 5 unbelievable. That's exactly what I am praying for team philippines the 3-point artellery. It's amazing answered prayer indeed. Go team philippines. Being in the final is not impossible.

You know I woke up this morning at 4 am just to pray for team philippines after a sort of bible reading. Particularly on 3 points opportunities and offensive rebounding chances. For me that 5 out of 5 of willie miller and James Yap. God bless team philippines.

  94. Anonymous // August 10, 2009 7:46 PM

  95. JULY GAY // August 10, 2009 7:47 PM

WAHAHAHAHA! SAN KA NA JULY???? PANALO PILIPINAS!!!!! WAHAHAHAHA!@!!!!!!

  96. Anonymous // August 10, 2009 7:48 PM

Just imagine, with the almost impeccable shooting ng RP, muntik pa tayo masilat?
We all agree that it was a nice win, but is it an impressive one?
Im just being objective here. What we need are consistent schemes, be it outside shooting, low post or passing plays.
We lack to killer instinct, we tend to relax pag may konting lamang.
What we need is focus and heart.
I was more impressed with the RP win over Japan, very good team plays!
Tommorow vs Iran, the level of intensity we had against Japan plus the luck we had against Taiwan, sigurado ako it will be a very exciting game.
    Go Team Pilipinas!!!

See the results they win over JAPAN and TAIWAN here in FIBA ASIA but they lost in JONES CUP SEE THE DIFFERENCE...

BELIEVE NEVER SAY DIE PHI CAN WIN TOMORROW MATALO MAN PANALO PA RIN KAYO SA PUSO KO HAHAHA

Kerby must step up tomorrow against Iran. Sa lahat ng laban ng RP team noong kasama sya, pag Iran ang kalaban sya lang yung forward na willing makipagbanggaan in the middle of the paint area. If they have a 7'3" na hirap bantayin, meron din tayong forward na di nila mabantayan ng maayos at si Kerby Raymundo yun. He has lateral movements na mahirapan kahit yung magkapatid na star players ng Iran. With him in the post or penetration, he can pass it to our shooters.

I was one of the doubters of Coach Yeng Guiao and his selection (including Baguio and Miller) but no matter what happens from hereon in, but this team has been playing the BEST defense the Philippines has ever shown in an international tournament. Their best D effort was against Korea. If we just sank a few of those open jumpers, the game would have been different. The Chinese Taipei game showed the team can SHOOT as well.

I was SO Wrong about this team, and I am SO GLAD I'm WRONG.

I don't know how our defense will hold up against the bigger teams like Iran and China but the team is really showing its teeth. Go RP Team!

On a side note, I really want us to beat LEBANON. They think we're pushovers... and unlike Iran or China or Jordan, they have no right to think so. We already beat them a few times before.

  133. ghost of KSA // August 10, 2009 9:30 PM

I still believe Powerade Team can beat Iran.

sana madala nila yung consistency hanggang bukas... sa international play hindi uso ang off night... kelangan every game is your last... may tiwala ako sa pinoy... yung mga puro puna sa kapwa naten pinoy ay walang alam sa basketball... puro kasi kayo NBA at wala kayong naiintindihan sa laro... our team may lack in preparation but the spirit and will to represent rules any obstacle...

GO COACH PUGO and TEAM PILIPINAS!!!

    Taulava
    - No. 1 in FG% = 62.5%
(high percentage shot kay Asi than most of the players, hindi sya

    unlike Raymndo - 0 of 8, Thoss - 1 of 7 and Aguilar 0 of 2)
    - No. 1 sa Rebounds = 8.25 kahit pang 9th lang sa playing time
    - 4th sa Points per game = 8.75pts in 15.25mins
    - 4th in FT% = 62.5%

    Miller
    - 1st in 3pts = 46.7%
    - 2nd in Rebounds = 6
    - 3rd in Points per Game = 9

    Baguio
    - 2nd in FG% = 56%
    - 2nd in Points per Game = 11.25
    - 3rd in FT% - 9 of 14 = 64.3%
    - 7th in Rebound tied with Dillinger = 3.25

    Yap
    - 2nd in 3pts = 42.9%
    but LAST in FG% = 36.4%
    - LAST in rebounds = 1

    Santos
    - 2nd in 3pt% (tied with Yap = 42.9%)
    - 2nd in FT% (4 of 5 = 80%)
    - 3rd in FG% (tied with Aguilar & Dillinger = 46.7%)
    SAYANG 8.75mins per game lang

    VERY IMPORTANT

    - Don't allow Raymundo (0 of 8), Thoss (1 of 7), Dillinger (0 of 3), Aguilar (0 of 2) becoz they're not good doing that and limit the 3pt attempt of Norwood (25%), Helterbrand (30.8%), Baguio (33.3%) and prioritize Miller (46.7%), Santos (42.9%) and Yap (42.9%) if they're in the game.

    - Raymundo is only averaging 4.5pts per game (11th) and the lowest in FG% which is 25.9%. Limit his playing time and give it to Asi Taulava who is 1st in FG%, 2pt% & Rebounds

    - Please let them practice the Free Throw becoz they only shoot 37 out of 66.

    - Give Santos more playing time kasi 8.75 mins per game lang sya(LAST) to think that he's 2nd in 3pt% tied with Yap = 42.9%. He is 2nd in FT% who is 4 of 5 = 80%. He is also 3rd in the FG% tied with Aguilar and Dillinger = 46.7%,

    vs Korea (2 of 9 sa FG) (0 of 5 sa 3pts)
vs Taiwan (8 of 16 sa FG) (6 of 11 sa 3pts) impress na kayo????

    - 13 of 32 (eto ba standard nyo?? HAHAH!)

How many REBOUNDS ba si JAMES per game?

    balang araw gusto nilang gumaya

that's based on facts at di nanghuhula

13 of 32 FG% ang pinagmamalaki nyo ba?
0 of 5 (3pts) against Japan lang naman sya

Miller, Santos, Pennisi, Aguilar at Taulava

  178. Anonymous // August 11, 2009 2:32 AM

I think it's the desire to win games is the key. Our defense is a good indicator of that desire. We just need to be shooting well beyond the arc and push the ball more and not wait for the defense of Iran to set up.

As for Yeng Guiao, negative motivator yan e. Because to be in the Team, you have to be one of the best and he expects the best from each and everyone of them.

    GO RP Team.

I think Cyrus, Yap, and Miller is a good change for the team. They are more of a scorer than a shooter. We just need to get going and capitalize on our strengths.

i believe in the coach's decision..kelangan talga sa fiba speed and shooting..kaya yung ibang players di masyado nabibigyan ng playing time..and i believe na mas effective si james yap compared ke dondon..

  182. Anonymous // August 11, 2009 5:11 AM

Just in case guys.... iran wins tom then on wed rp wins against kuwait and most probably iran sweeps the group e with a win over korea.... same thing may happen in case on the other group this might be the qfinal scenario:

    1 - iran
    8 - qatar

    3 - korea
    6 - lebanon

    2 - china
    7 - taiwan

    4 - jordan
    5 - pinas

.... in God's will, hopefully we may be able to squeeze more from our heart and beat jordan which is very much possible.... then we can see our team in the semis.... in case we run out of luck to beat the powerhouse china, we can still set up a rematch with korea.... and then finishes third... and so much of a dream come true to see our very own RP team in Turkey.... Guys all we need is come together and Pray for our team .... Let's support them.... -pong

  183. Anonymous // August 11, 2009 5:33 AM

Si Alapag, masyadong maliit na para sa matchups with other international teams, at si Hontiveros, busy kakasibak kay Valerie Concepcion kaya bigay na natin yun sa kanya. I cheer nyo na lang yung team natin malay nyo makatsamba.

Yun lang, and by the way, teampilipinas.info, ang galing ng website nyo!

    Love,

    Yeng Guiao

  184. eulivo // August 11, 2009 5:38 AM

JayJay Helterbrand’s long three-pointer off the board that hit the third quarter buzzer gave the Nationals their biggest lead at 62-54.
---yeah that was the best ever ,but at the beginning of the fourth quarter, that lead was eaten by the opponents down to just a couple of points.IN LESS THAN 3 MINUTES!!!

please don't misjudge me.there's nothing that i would i want more than to improve OUR team in every aspect of the game so that we can be one of the best in the world.
FOR NOW ALL I WANT IS MORE DEFENSE.DEFENSE AND DEFENSE!!!THEN A WHOLE LOT OF SOUL FOR THE REBOUNDS!!!!

  188. gunghoman4 // August 11, 2009 6:22 AM

in terms of size, we are definitely outmatched, in terms of skills however we are definitely way above the line against Iran, i think what we can probably do is maximize our strenghts e.g. agility, mobility & skills, improve our ball management & hopefully we can continue our impeccable shooting against chinese taipei. Hamed Haddadi is not as unstoppable nor unguardable as what we might percieved, he might be tall, but not as skillful as an NBA player should be, he's slow, & does not react to defenses effectively. i believe the last edition of team pilipinas made a good defensive scheme against this guy. Beating Iran is doable & possible. If ever we do loose against them will have to win against Kuwait, then will end up as the 3rd seed in the group, ensuring a place in the quarters were will meet either Jordan or China if the Jordanians pull off an upset against the Chinese in their group.

    key points:

    - consistent & high percentage medium & long range shooting.

    - solid defense

    - speed

    - transition plays

    - free throws

  196. Anonymous // August 11, 2009 7:47 AM

mga bobo! bakit nyo hinahanapan ng rebound si james yap at 2pts feild goals, unang una shooting guard position nya, ang role nya tumakbo sa fast break hindi kumuha ng rebopund, para sa center at forwards yun! yung 2pts fg naman, e puro 3pts shot tinitira nya, as a shooting guard yun din role nya, to shoot from beyond the arc, marunong ka ba magbasketball? di mo naiintindihan yung game! bobo!

  197. Anonymous // August 11, 2009 7:58 AM

palitan si cyrus baguio ni dondon hontiveros.
palitan si jared dillenger ni jay Washington.

no way!!!! cyrus proved himself worthy of the spot, tanggapin nyo na na hindi na bumabata yung player nyo! mas mabilis si skyrus and a better fastbreak finisher than hontiveros! ganun din si jared, di pwedeng small forward or shooting guard si washington, hindi nya kaya maglead ng fast break! di din sya sing tapang ni dillenger, mababading lang si jaywash sa laki ng mga kalaban natin sa international games, itong mga players na kinuha ni coach yeng, mga players na buo loob, mga di takot masaktan, di tulad ng mga ipinipilit nyo!
