Team Pilipinas defeat Taiwan team B, 94-90 (Game Replay Videos and Photos)

(source: PBA.ph) TAIPEI – Powerade-Team Pilipinas found some reason to breath easier before it faces league-leading Iran at the close of the 31st William Jones Cup, getting past Taiwan-B, 94-90, Saturday at the Hsinchuang gym.

Willie Miller scored 22 points, Arwind Santos added 16 and Jared Dillinger 13 points as the Nationals, who had strips of yellow adhesives taped to their jerseys in honor of ailing former president Corazon C. Aquino, ended a three-game losing streak in improving to 2-5.

Taiwan’s second team absorbed its sixth loss in seven games but not after giving the RP team, which led 92-81 on Miller’s free throws with less than two minutes remaining, another endgame scare.

The Nationals were more up to the task this time despite national coach Yeng Guiao’s decision to turn the last few minutes of the game into a practicum for Dillinger, Santos and Japeth Aguilar.

I wanted to see how they would react in the end without the benefit of a timeout or key players with them inside,” said Guiao.

Dillinger and Aguilar missed four free throws in succession, leaving Taiwan-B within 92-88, but Santos, a consistent member of the PBA’s All-Defensive team, stole the ball from forward Chang Tsung and converted a breakaway layup for 94-88 with 35 seconds to go.

Taiwan is a tough team to beat because of its quickness,” Guiao said. “They broke down our individual defense. And when we tried to play a zone, they shot well from the outside and so we had to revert to the man-to-man.

In an earlier game, Jordan, which forfeited its Thursday’s game with Iran in protest over officiating, crushed Japan, 93-58, for its sixth win in seven outings.

Meanwhile, PBA commissioner Renauld ‘Sonny’ Barrios exhorted the national players early in the morning to “shape up for the mission ahead,” reminding them that only an “optimum performance” can spell success in the 25th FIBA Asia Men’s Basketball Championship in Tianjin, China two weeks from now.

Speaking to team members, including national coach Yeng Guiao and manager JB Baylon, after a Mass offered at the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel for the recovery of Mrs. Aquino who is gravely ill, Barrios addressed the need for the players to get in top condition and to work on their outside shooting and free throws.

Do it for yourselves, the PBA, and – take this seriously for they are not empty words – for flag and country,” Barrios said.

Quoting excepts from “Values of the Game,” a book written by NBA legend and former 3-term United States senator Bill Bradley, Barrios spoke of the essentials required to excel in the game.

If you can’t run, you can’t win,” Barrios said, reading from the paperback. “And the only way to improve your shooting is to shoot.”

In the book, Bradley wrote about his personal off-season shooting regimen: taking 25 shots from five different spots.

He shoots 25 from one area and he has to make them all,” Barrios told the players. “If he misses on the 23rd, then he returns to No. 1. That’s the kind of discipline and dedication Bill Bradley put to improve his game.

The starting forward of the ‘70s New York Knicks also recalled the time Hubie Brown, then an assistant coach with the 1972 Milwaukee Bucks, went to practice an hour and a half ahead of schedule with the intention of impressing head coach Larry Costello.

“Lo and behold! Who was there when Hubie Brown arrived? Kareem Abdul Jabbar, practicing his skyhook,” Barrios said. “And what Kareem did, according to the book, was put a smaller rim inside the regular ring and shoot through it.”

Barrios brought to the RP players’ attention percentages gathered from the 2007 RP-Tokushima team coached by Chot Reyes, the latest season of the NBA and the PBA, and the Powerade-RP’s performance in the 8th SEABA Men’s Championship in Medan last June.

Sad to say, guys, we’re lagging behind, fourth and last, in combined field goal percentage, especially in three-point conversion, and in free throw shooting,” he said. “So now you know what kind of work you have to cram into the last 10 days.”

The coaching staff’s decision to name Ryan Reyes and Ranidel de Ocampo as alternates was also brought up.

We would have submitted all 14 players to the FIBA Asia but the requirement was just for 12,” Barrios said. “However, this we told the two guys and this I share to all of you now: the coach has the discretion to change anybody in the lineup three days before the tournament begins if he feels a need for it.

So I’m urging all of you to shape up and be in the best condition that you can be within the next few days.

Barrios paid tribute, first to Wynne Arboleda, the veteran Burger King playmaker, for “being around to help the team,” and then to the rest of the RP, acknowledging “you work so hard within very limited parameters.”

Expressing his “faith” in them, Barrios concluded by saying, “We shall sink or swim with this team, but we have to play as one.”

The Mass, originally scheduled Sunday, was officiated by Fr. Joy Tajonera. M.M., a native of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, and was arranged through the Sacred Heart of Joes & the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Chapel and UGNAYAN, a migrant and immigrant ministry based here.

The scores:

POWERADE-RP 94 – Miller 22, Santos 16, Dillinger 13, Baguio 12, Raymundo 6, Taulava 6, Norwood 6, Aguilar 6, De Ocampo 4, Thoss 2, Arboleda 2.

TAIWAN-B 90 – Chang T.H. 24, Kin 17, Chen 12, Lin 8, Chen Y.A. 8, Lu 6, Lo 5, Tsai 4, Hung 3, Wang 3, Lin C.J. 0.

Quarterscores: 28-22; 48-41; 69-67; 94-90

“Dondon helped opened up the middle with his long-ranged jumpers and could become an asset to the RP team now. I truly felt they deserved spots in the RP team." - RACELA

  9. Anonymous // July 25, 2009 12:29 PM

Guiao said Alapag was close to making the team. He was the third choice for the point guard spot, which is now occupied by Helterbrand sophomore Ryan Reyes of Sta. Lucia.

  10. Olsen // July 25, 2009 12:29 PM

lapag’s non-inclusion, according to Guiao, was also based on the match up situations as taller guards are playing in the international level.

    thanks,

  27. Anonymous // July 25, 2009 4:56 PM

Not calling any timeouts in the endgame and still holding Miller (who has hot hands on this game) on the bench... very obvious that Guiao's still hiding his cards.

  28. Anonymous // July 25, 2009 4:57 PM

  30. Anonymous // July 25, 2009 5:00 PM

Ito yung article ni Mr Mendoza from Cebu Sun Star enjoyL

OK, OK, in games I had played with my younger brothers, my son and other relatives of mine much younger than me, I almost always wanted to lose more than win.

The Big Brother thing is inherent in me: I hate to defeat rivals younger than me.

Most of the time, I knew I could beat most of them. But I’ve learned much from Nixon’s ping pong diplomacy, if not from Tom Hanks’s Forrest Gump movie.
In losing, you could also end up winning.

  31. Anonymous // July 25, 2009 5:02 PM

    Continued:

So, against junior kin, I always played to lose.

The winning is in the heart, never in the final score.

I cite this in view of what’s going on in the Jones Cup in Taipei.

We’ve been losing a lot in that tournament we are now deep down the cellar.

    Scary?

    Not to the coaching staff—seemingly.

If you haven’t sensed it yet, I can understand all this teeth-gritting from you, guys. Even cussing.

But if you ask me, I’ve long ago known—no, had this hunch—that we went to Taipei not necessarily to win the trophy.

Rather, we flew a yet-to-be assembled national squad to the Jones Cup to use the joust in assembling a crew for a war of future significance to flag and country.
If we won one or two, that’d just be a bonus.

Now, to come down to it, we are in Taiwan to finally select the RP Team to the Fiba-Asia World Championship qualifier in Tianjin, China, set to begin in barely two weeks.

Two players would be dropped—if they haven’t been nudged out yet.

Too expensive a game plan, you might say?

Going overseas just to form a national team?

    Not really.

We are there shooting two birds with one stone, to use a cliché.

    We compete and next select.

The competition is added tune-up for our intrepid warriors, the selection gaining the ultimate in the journey.

So, quit blabbing now, please? Stop the wailing.

Instead, let’s cheer them on even.

At times, the meaning of life is also measured in the losses we incur.

As the saying goes, “It’s not in the rising but in the falling.”

Dami errors, turnovers, interceptions at 1 out of 8 free throws lang naipasok sa importanteng last few minutes.ANO BA YAN????HAYYY!!!SANA MAY ITINATAGO PA.(kAYA?)

Remember the last time with chot reyes, the Philippines created a hype during the Jones cup. Nag third nga tayo dun pero nabantayan tayo during the Olympic Qualifying tournament. Yan tuloy 9th place ang bagsak natin dun.

they don't give their best para talunin lang ang taiwan B at makuha ang jones cup title.Una coach YG want to reserve the energy of his players to the upcoming jones cup.pangalawa sinadya niyang yung host team ng CT-A at CT-B to give them good match-up para maiwasan yung gulo gaya sa laban ng jordan at iran lalo na yung pangugulo ng mga taiwanese fans like nung nangyari sa ilo-ilo voltz sa jones cup.Pangatlo iwas scouting ng ibang team and implement his devise system na familiar ang mga pba players na member ng powerade team .

  53. tandang ZORRO // July 25, 2009 7:53 PM

    round robin..

    1 - powerade team pilipinas-a
2 - team pilipinas-b (team nina alapag, hontiveros, jwash, at iba pa)
    3 - team lebanon

    fiba-asia championship 2009
    1 - china
    2 - iran
3 - lebanon (w/ the inclusion of feghali veciara, vroman, freje)
4 - jordan (w/ the inclusion of wright, their naturalized player)
5 - korea (w/ their excellent outside shooting)
6 - philippines or japan or taiwan or qatar or syria

5th place lang ung the best finish na makukuha ng pinas, if they will have
that upset win over korea na alam ko close to possible...

    GO RP!

  64. Anonymous // July 25, 2009 8:50 PM

  65. Anonymous // July 25, 2009 9:12 PM

Read nyo news column sa itaas, pati si Barrios kinausap na mga players "to work on their outside shooting and free throws."

In life, there's what we called "sacrifice".

This team is sacrificing themselves, they are willing to sacrifice their pride their honor. They are willing to be judged, to be humiliated by the other nations, and worst... by us.

You think they deserved what you are saying against them, for the reason that you love the country and you don't want our country to be humiliated in the international scene.

But, this Filipinos are taking it. They can hear us. That is their sacrifice. Plus their hard training, risking their bodies.

Sometimes you need to sacrifice in able to achieve your GOAL.

"All of us Filipinos have to make sacrifices" - Former President Corazon Aquino

    And because of that.

    I. I'm willing to sacrifice my pride, to be humiliated as a Filipino, to be critized by the other nations(by commentators, other players, other race).

For there will be a time, That I know.
This sacrifice will be worth it.
A time that will let us Stand with our heads up high.
Win or Fail.. I always be proud of myself that I support my country.

Please pray for Mrs. Corazon Aquino's recovery and for our country's recovery.

  68. jrsanti // July 25, 2009 9:26 PM

we'll see how well they do against iran. last game na ito sa jones cup. yeng should lay those kings it not aces from up his sleeves to see if rp can pull it out.this game should be the application of their so-call "learning experience" from the tournament.we'll see if they learned something after 7 games.

REPLY KA NAMAN.WALA KA BANG LOAD?

  84. Anonymous // July 26, 2009 4:06 AM

ANONG PINAGSASABI NYO NA ME TINATAGO PA SI YENG. KITA NYO NAMAN NAPAKAHINANG TEAM D NILA MATAMBAKAN. AT NUNG NAKADIKIT NA ANG TAIWAN NAG PAPANIC NA SILA AT LALONG NAG E ERROR. KUNG WALA SILA BALAK MANALO EH DI SANA PINATALO NILA.KITA MO NAMAN TRYING SO HARD TO WIN IT.
D ITO PELIKULA NG BUHAY NA NAGPAPATALO MUNA. BASKETBALL ITO. ANY KIND OF SPORTS IT'S GOOD FOR THE TEAM PAG NANANALO MASKI PA TUNE UP GAME LNG YAN. NAKAKA ENCOURAGE. HINDI UN MAKAKATULONG SA TEAM ANG PALAGING TALO AT ALAM KO NA ALAM NG MGA COACH YAN.PLAYER DIN AKO AT WALANG COACH ANG MAGKAKAGUSTONG MATALO ANG TEAM MASKI SA PRACTICE LNG.
KITANG KITA ANG TOTOO. MASKI SI COMMISSIONER BARRIOS NAKIKITA ANG KAHINAAN. AT WALANGMASAMA ANG MAGSABI NG TOTOO. IT'S A WAKE UP CALL.
HINDI MASAMA ANG CRITISISMO KASI PARA MA IMPROVE. MAS MASAMA ANG GAYA NG IBA JAN NA PINAPANIWALAAN ANG HINDI KAPANIPANIWALA. PARA KAUNG TANGANG ASAWA NA NILOLOKO NA EH INLOVE PARIN. WE NEED TO BE VOCAL IF WE SEE SOMETHING WRONG. IT'S FOR THE BETTERMENT OF OUR TEAM.
HINDI ITO PANINIRA KAYA WAG KAU MAPIPIKON.
I HOPE THEY IMPROVE PA.KASI HALOS WALA NG TIME NAG CRA CRAMMING NA SILA.
SALAMAT SA SUPPORT NG PBA PERO SANA COMMISSIONER BARRIOS BIGYAN NYO SILA NG MAS MAHUSAY AT MAS MATAGAL NA PREPARATION. WE NEED A SEPARATE UNIT TEAM OUT FROM PBA NA MAGING PERMANENT NATIONAL TEAM. THATS THE ANSWER.
    THANK YOU.

  85. Anonymous // July 26, 2009 5:38 AM

don't lose hope yet guys, this isn't FIBA yet. we can still redeem ourselves there and at least we know a little bit of our opponents now. they'll under estimate us, and we can use that to our advantage. lets just hope that in the FIBA they'll perform well.

  86. Anonymous // July 26, 2009 7:28 AM

its so nice reading constructive comments from here..I know guys we all love our rp team much as we love our country..lets give our 100% support 2 the team..I hope to God d players will give their best performance in FIba..win or lose man..at least they've tried their very best..Our great support and prayers to d RP team..Sana wlang injuries and play ur best...pfdiehard

  88. Anonymous // July 26, 2009 8:43 AM

I would suggest that the team will continue to wear the "yellow" on their uniform......

With this Yellow cloth tatalunin natin ang Iran.......

  89. Anonymous // July 26, 2009 8:59 AM

ball handling.... lessen the turnovers.... rebounding... and outside shooting para manalo sa fiba 2009...

How i wish talaga manalo ang pinas sa FIBA!

  90. Anonymous // July 26, 2009 9:39 AM

    To our Philippine Team:

    Guys proud kami sa inyo!!!
Just want to comment on some points guys, lahat ng teams na sumali dyan sigurado ako na hindi rin ganun kaserious manalo jan, madami ding tinatago ang mga yan. Maybe ung ibang magagaling nila nanonood lang.
My points is, you are the selected as the best there is to represent our country. Do not just focus on beating a great team in FIBA this August. Because you may get frustrated in the end and be surprised to the experienced - because they too maybe hiding huge surprised for all, too much pressure on that means a lost. JUST FOCUS ON HOW TO EXCEED YOU OWN TALENTs. CHALLENGE YOUR OWN SELVES. FREE THROWS ARE HUGE! OUTSIDE SHOOTING IS THE ANSWER TO TALLER OPPONENTS!TURNOVERS SHOWS IMMATURITY IN BASIC BASKETBALL! SHOOT THE BALL WISELY (NO NO TO TOO MUCH ACROBATS) NO NO TO BLIND PASSES (BECAUSE YOU ARE BLIND)
I'm a huge fan of basketball, I think win or lose will not change anything. unless you focus on how to play as a team, no pin pointing of faults, just play up to the last seconds by playing as Filipinos (Naturalized? it sucks)- you are all heroes now...show them more...Oki!!!??? - TONYBOYPOGI

  91. Anonymous // July 26, 2009 10:50 AM

Wow!

  92. Anonymous // July 26, 2009 5:20 PM

    don don at alapag...

    ibalik!!!!!

  93. Anonymous // July 27, 2009 5:56 PM

    Powerade Team Fil-Ams Roster:
    1. Jared Dillinger - mabilis lang tumakbo. walang shooting. kangkarot.
    2. Skyrus Baguio - turnover specialist. Mukhang bandage sa hospital ang headband.
    3. James Yap - Primadona player. pang-PBA lang.
    4. Ranidel De Ocampo - Hard Foul Expert. Kabado
    5. Asi Taulava - ga-Tabo nalang kung tumalon.
    bagay na lang sa WWE.
    6. Arwind "The Whirlwind" Santos - Too small for his position. payatot = undersized
    7. Kerby Reymundo - Hindi Consistent. mahilig mag-Foul Counted sa kalaban.
    8. Willie "The Thriller" Miller - Not a Natural Point Guard. Pag bwenas, Bwenas! Pag Malas, Super MALAS!
    9. Japeth Aguilar - Hindi pa Hinog.
    10. Mick Penissi - Hindi ko malaman bakit sya naging Pinoy. Ichura pa lang! May asawa lang siguro na Pinay. May shooting pero immobile.
    11. Jayjay Helterbrand - not 100% because of injury.
    12. Gabe Norwood - No comment
    13. Ryan Reyes - No comment
Minsan may shooting.

  94. Anonymous // July 27, 2009 11:41 PM

  96. Anonymous // July 30, 2009 8:11 AM
